Notes: Here i am writing again after 3 years.... a total new fandom. I am watching b99 and i'm so addicted, Jake is the only thing in my mind right now and i had to do this. It didn't go as i planned, but i hope it's ok. It's small and english is not my first language. Expect more of Jake x Reader here, it's my first try and voilá. 

Summary: Jake and the reader have a friends with benefits relationship and suddenly she starts to act strange. 

Another work day in NYPD's 99 precinct. It had everything to be another normal day. Well... normal as it can get down there. But it wasn't.

 Immediately when you entered the precinct, Jake turned his head up from his computer to give you a smile and probably a silly joke provoking you. But his smile vanished as soon as he saw you pass everyone with your head down, no good mornings and going somewhere down the hall.

 "Hey" Rosa called looking between Jake and the hall you just disappeared. "What's up with (Y/N)?" 

 "I don't know." Jake responded confused as everybody else in the room. You were a joyful person, always smiling and greeting every single person that worked there. 

 "What have you done Jake?" Amy asked angry assuming it was his fault since everyone knew about yours friends with benefits relationship that has been going on for a while now. 

 "What? Nothing" Jake answered quickly indignant with the assumption. 

 "No, Amy is right Jake." Boyle said getting up of his desk and coming closer. "(Y/N) is acting weird this days, yesterday she didn't even wanted to eat some of my salmon cookies. She loves that. And coming here and not giving my good morning hug? Definitely something's strange." 

 "Boyle is right on that one." Rosa agreed with her arms crossed. 

 "I don't know ok?" Jake answered frustrated with your strange behavior rising his hands in surrender. "(Y/N) didn't went to my place this last weekend, in fact I had barely seen her for the past days. I really have no idea... maybe she's just trying to dump me and trying to make it easier." 

 "Or maybe she's tired of waiting for you to ask her out on a real date and assume her as your girlfriend!" Boyle pointed raising an eyebrow to his friend. "You should tell her how you really feel." 

 "Yeah, haven't you kept her waiting long enough?" Amy agreed. Everybody that met you and Jake knew eventually you were going to stay together. You had the same kind of humor and the same sassy tone. So it wasn't exactly a surprise when in one of the squad's reunions at the bar, you and Jake got hammered and started to talk and laugh closer to each other. Not a long time after that, you both disappeared going straight to his house. "It's has been months since this 'friends with benefits' thing started." 

 "Look guys." Jake said with a frustrated sigh rolling his eyes. "(Y/N) and I have talked about this. She's not ready yet for a relationship, she passed a hard time with that son of a bitch ex of hers. She needs time and I respect that."

 "Oh here she comes." Rosa alerted and quickly everybody went back to their places and pretended to be working. You came out of the files room discussing something with Terry. 

 "Okay (Y/N), we can work on that. Good job." Terry said with a sweet smile going back to his desk, and you to yours. You sat down in silence still not looking around organizing your paperwork, but notice everyone quiet and you could literally feel their stares burning on your skin. 

 "What?" You finally said looking around to your colleagues and everybody tried to disguise murmuring a lot of 'nothing' 'just working'. Everybody unless Jake. He was watching you intensely trying to figure out what was wrong. 

 Your eyes locked for a second and you could see that he was worried, and that broke your heart even more. This wasn't supposed to happen right now. Your heart was beating fast and nervousness took over your body. You quickly turned your attention to your desk again and took your purse pretending to organize something there. 

 "Good morning squad, today..." Captain Holt started to say walking out of his office but stopped in his tracks when looked over your desk and catch the sight of something inside your purse. He looked back and forth you and Jake. "Oh..." 

 "Oh what? What oh?" Jake asked fast doing his classic bite lip when he was anxious, trying to figure out what Holt saw that he didn't. 

 "Hmm" Holt said looking at Jake like he didn't know what to do now. "(Y/N) please come to my office." 

 Jake watched you get up and follow Holt into his office, closing the door behind you and closing the shutters. He strained his eyes shaking his head in denial. Ok, this was how things was going to go? Fine! He was a detective and he was so on for this investigation.

 Jake wanted to stay and see your expression when you got out of Holt's office, but duty called and he had to be on the streets all day. He put everyone on the precinct working on the case '(Y/N)'s secret 0.1', and every minimum suspicious movement, they were oriented to send him a message.

 Charles really took it seriously. 

 Nothing useful thought. Man he was frustrated, he solves all type of cases everyday but he couldn't figure out what was wrong with the women he liked? It was driving him crazy! 

 It has just grown dark when Jake entered back the 99, some people from the night shift was already there and he could only spot Boyle from his friends.

 "Hey Jake! Did you read my messages? Did you find them useful?" 

 "Hmmm... Yeah Charles, of course, thank you." Jake said after pondering the answer in his head although It was no useful at all. Charles told him every single one of your steps through the day, Jake wanted to know if you did something strange not your constant need to pee on that day. "(Y/N) already went home?"

 "Actually no, I just send you a text, didn't you read it?" He asked feeling insulted but continued when saw Jake's face. "Ok, she and Terry are still working on that case but (Y/N) got hot, she said she needed some air. She's on the roof." 

 "Hot? (Y/N) is always cold." He said confused but suddenly something clicked and everything started to fall into place inside his head. "I got go."

 His steps were fast to open the door for the roof and he immediately spotted you looking at the city view. You didn't turn but he knew that you knew it was him. 

 "Hey you." He said softly slowly approaching you until he was by your side. "I was worried today, you know?" 

 "I kind of got that.... Charles followed me into the ladies bathroom three times." You said making you both laugh. "So what it was? Like a secret case that everybody worked? How was it called? '(Y/N)'s secret 0.1?'"

 "What? No. I wouldn't go that obvious." Jake answered laughing nervously. Oh man, you knew him too damn well. "But yeah, was definitely working on that case. I worry about (Y/N). You were pushing me away, you didn't even answered my calls this last weekend. Sure, you could be done with our casual thing or whatever, but I know you. I knew it was not it." 

 "Jake, look..." You said with a sigh but he interrupted you. 

 "I was confused as hell this morning, but suddenly everything clicked. Yesterday you didn't want that weird salmon cookies Charles brings. I adore you but those are nasty as fuck, by the way. You didn't drink coffee when you got here today, you always do that. And not greeting anyone? That means something happened yesterday night that got you worried." Jake said and paused waiting for a reaction, but he took your silence a sign to continue his deduction. "Of course you could be suspecting for a while now, and that's why you have been avoiding me. Captain saw your purse when he got out of his office. He saw your tampons, am I right? Untouched. Your usual period date has already passed, and everybody knows when it is because of how much pain you feel. Usually stays only in paper work those days. Constantly needing to pee. But none of it hit me until Charles said you were feeling hot. You're always cold and asks for my jackets. Those are all symptoms of...." 

 "Hit me Sherlock." You said and waited for his right answer.

 "You're pregnant." Jake said finally, his face softening. "It is mine?" He asks feeling insecure but he changed his mind when saw your face. "Dumb question. Shouldn't say that. Of course it's mine."

 "I'm so sorry Jake, I just didn't know how to say it. You're right in everything, I started suspecting since last Friday but only took the test yesterday." You said starting to feel tears in your eyes. "And yes, Captain Holt found out in seconds. I just begged him not to tell you."

 "Traitor" Jake said furrowing his eyebrows. "I'm just confused on how that happened? We always use condoms." 

 "I was thinking that too, until I remembered that night on Gina's birthday that we got really drunk and had sex on the bar's bathroom." You said and he agreed, both smiling at the memory quickly coming back to the moment. "I am so scared. We're not even together and I..." 

 "Wait, that's what is troubling you?" Jake said feeling his hands shaking and his heart beating incredibly fast. "(Y/N) I like you ok? For a long time now. I just didn't think you were ready yet for a relationship, I was respecting your time. But oh god, I'm so in love with you it hurts. Of course it's not the perfect scenario, but we gonna make this work, I won't leave you to take care of this baby alone."

 He said sincerely looking in your eyes and you nodded feeling some tears starting to fall down, you hugged him tight feeling his strong grip on you. Jake kissed your forehead, rubbing your back to calm you down. 

 "I'm in love with you too Jake, so much, I want this to work out." You said softly into his neck. 

 "It will." He said giving a slow chaste kiss. You stayed hugged for a few minutes but suddenly he gasped and started to hyperventilate. "Holy shit! I'm going to be a dad. What if i can not be a good dad because mine abandoned me when I was little? I'm going to be a dad." 

 "Hey" You said to drag his attention back to you, watching his wide eyes staring at the horizon. You knew it was your time to calm him down. "You're going to be a great dad. You are already proving this to me by not letting me be alone. We will work this out remember?" 

 "Yeah..." He sighed feeling calmer looking into your eyes. "We will work this out."

The Great Ace Attorney Playthrough: The Adventure of the Great Departure (Part 3)

Last Time: We finally found Miss Brett, the English woman who’s present had been erased from the scene of the crime, and dragged her ass to court only to discover that she was a Massively Racist Bitch in a swan hat. After a lot of back and forth it became clear that Dr Watson Wilson actually died of poisoning, and that Miss Brett took advantage of the fact Japan currently doesn’t do autopsy reports to shoot his corpse in the chest and frame me (Ryunosuke) for the murder. Fortunately for us Hosonaga took the bottle from the crime scene, and after needlessly translating Miss Brett for the last hour (and presumably filtering out a lot of questionable content) was only to happy to produce it for the court. Unfortunately for us the poison wasn’t in the bottle, so it’s up to a lady in pink to save the day!

Ok so I’m pretty sure that Curare is incredibly powerful and fast acting poison (which lines up with what we know). Unfortunately I think it needs to be injected but I might be mixing it up with something else.

Susato’s actually given me the report now, which is probably a much more sensible way of getting information (rather than me trying to remember what I’ve picked up from Agatha Christie novels), and unfortunately it looks like I remembered correctly about it needing to be injected.

(Side note: how alarming is it that I’ve retained this much knowledge on poisons? I feel the need to explain that I’ve been reading and listening to audio dramatisation of Agatha Christie novels since I was about three, but I feel like that makes it worse)

What is curious though is it’s potential use as an anaesthetic. Given that Dr Wilson had just had a tooth removed with anaesthetic I wonder if there’s a connection there?

I’m not sure what it could be though, unless it turns out Miss Brett Weekend at Berniesed his corpse all the over way from the clinic.

2020’s Top 10 List Part One!

So here’s a list that no one asked for of the top 10 anime series I watched this year. I wanted to put this in no particular order but I figured I might as well.  I’ll also be doing my top 10 fanfics from this year and my top 10 books I read this year so stay tuned for parts 2 and 3!

10.) RWBY

Uuuggghhh I really didn’t wanna put this on here… but I really didn’t watch much this year so I had to I guess :(((

I’m really not liking this right now… if my blog wasn’t sort of popular because of my rwby oneshots I’d consider just dropping the anime all together….

(I’m seriously debating on whether to watch the new season or not)

Honestly, the only thing bringing me back is my unhealthy love for Ozpin, Torchwick, and Ironwood.

Honestly, I’d give this show about a 3 or 4/10…

I used to love it so much but I think the quality of writing is going down and the show is trying to be too many things at once that I’m just losing interest.

9.) My Hero Academia

Why is this so low you may ask? Well, cause I think my main hype coming from this is the manga.

Yes I love the show, the animation studio is freaking amazing and the quality of animation never ceases to amaze me. But I love the manga a bit more.

This will probably jump up in rating around season 5 or 6 but for right now I’ll leave it in the 9th spot :)

8.) Sirius the Jaeger

Oh my GOSH, I want a second season so bad. One of my favorite OC’s I’ve ever made was for this anime (it’s Idris Tana btw) and I actually commissioned artwork for her recently and it’s SO PRETTY.

Anyway getting off-topic, the animation of this show and again with the dark and grittiness of it is what drew me in.

Actually, my late grandma and also my great aunt tagged me in a Facebook post with the trailer when it first came out cause they saw vampires and thought I would like it and that's what got me into this show in the first place.

So thank you grandma and auntie!

But I absolutely adore the soundtrack, the mix of orchestral pieces mixed with the more electro-kinda-vibes is my life (seriously go listen to “The Beginning of the Hunting” it changed my life, as an orchestra and cello geek it made my heart so happy)

7.) Tokyo Ghoul season 1-3

Ok, I’m currently reading the manga after I’ve seen the anime and lemme tell you I wish they didn’t censor the anime so much.

I can’t even find an uncensored version anymore and it makes me so upset.

The darkness and goriness of the manga is what appealed to me in the first place (yes I get weird looks for it, no I will not change my mind)

Kaneki is my CHILD and he CANNOT do any wrong. I don’t care who you are I love him

6.) Ajin: Demi-Human

Uuuggghhh to be honest the anime is kinda meh but my love for the manga is so great I am legally obligated to put this here.

Don’t get me wrong, the animation and soundtrack for this show is phenomenal and I think they got Satou down pat.

But they did dumb down and cut out a lot of interesting scenes. Scenes like how Satou takes down some of his opponents (which I can see why... many American viewers would most likely get offended by it… you manga readers know what scene i mean)

Nagai Kei turns into a bit of a whiny character instead of the smart but exasperated teenager I know and love in the manga is the anime version of Kei going to bite off his own fingers in order to climb a wall into a military base?? Definitely not. Would manga-Kei do that? Well, he already did… so... yes..,

Nakano Kou is still kind of funny but he is so much more fascinating in the manga (his backstory breaks my heart).

5.) Bungou Stray Dogs

Another new one that I was actually recommended by my friend @bright-like-the-sun-00 :) I ended up watching it originally in dub but then went back and rewatched it in sub because I love my children so much.

Chuuya is my bean and I love my OC that I created Charlie Dickens :)

(if you guys could go read her story I’d be eternally grateful).

Anyway!

This show has a fantastic cast in both Japanese and English and the music score is one of my favorites. The characters are so wonderfully hilarious and interesting and fhajxbqbaka I love this show okay??

4.) Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

I actually put this off for YEARS because my oldest step-brother kept saying I should watch it. At this point, I was refusing out of spite cause I’m petty like that. But I finally started watching and-

I have never gotten so attached to a character (cough cough Giyuu) so quickly.

I have been listening to Gurenge and Kamado Tanjiro no Uta on repeat for literal weeks now and I still grin like an idiot when listening to them. I also have a potential OC/crossover coming out soon sooooo…. stay tuned??

I also broke my sister cause I showed her a post that said national donut day and had a picture of Rengoku on it… I didn’t understand it until she explained it to me and now I cackle every time I think about it.

3.) Jujutsu Kaisen

@plusultranerd​ got me into this blame her for the future spamming of your dashboards

GUYS GOJO SATORU IS MY LIFE NO QUESTIONS ASKED

He could literally murder me and I’d thank him. He is the prettiest anime character I have EVER SEEN and I love him so much.

Anyway anime. The show got my attention from the get-go. Itadori is such a fun main character and Megumi is me cause you know dogs.

I think I saw an ad for it and since I have Crunchyroll I figured why not and fell in love with it

I put it on sometimes so me and my sister just start jamming out to it and we get the stupidest looks and it is amazing

2.) Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Another anime that I will rewatch over and over again until literally the end of time. Also, another series that I’ve already read/or am reading the manga.

Alphonse Eric is my cinnamon roll you can pry him from my cold dead hands.

I actually am buying the special edition hardback manga covers that are coming out and I LOVE THEM

THEY ARE SO PRETTY

Am I talking about the characters or the manga?

My answer is yes

Anyway, all of the characters in this are so wonderfully complex and have motivations and i fall in love with 99% of the characters (except for Shou Tucker, I even like Father actually)

1.)  Death Parade

This has got to be one of my top favorite anime of ALL TIME.

I rewatched it early this year and this is one of the very few anime that will get me to cry and this makes me cry every freaking time.

The music is stunning, the animation is magnificent.

For being based on an animated short film, this has such potential for a second season and such a complex storyline was packed into 12 episodes.

I will forever recommend this anime to literally anyone who is looking for something new to watch.

I’m also noticing I have a thing for white-haired male anime characters with really pretty eyes….. Kaneki… Gojo… Decim...

Darker than Black

I didn’t rewatch the whole thing this year but this anime is literally my life. Hei is such a bean and I love him.

Hunter x Hunter

Another anime i didn't rewatch completely but still adore :) I heard they’re continuing it and I’m excited for the dark continent arc!

Dororo

Technically i watched this late 2019 but whatever; I do what I want. The animation was absolutely gorgeous and I loved the gritty darkness of it. Mio will forever be my favorite character; you cannot change my mind. Some parts I did find a bit boring but overall I’d rate this a solid 6/10!

The Devil is a Part-Timer!

I rewatched parts of it and not the whole thing, I also have the first two volumes of the light novels and I forget how funny it is until I actually watch it. It has me laughing every time and never fails to put a smile on my face :)

tell me the first song that made you stan your current fave group and why did your faves attract you so much?

ok SO the song that probably got me into rv 100% (also yes ik this blog is 99% nct but rv is my forever fave no question) was probably ice cream cake!! i had been a casual listener of many groups up until that point and had never really stanned anyone, but icc was so infectious i found myself watching it over and over. i had heard happiness and be natural before but hadn’t really listened too closely, so icc was the song that captured me. after that, dumb dumb only cemented my love for them more, and the red is still one of my favorite kpop albums to date. rv attracted me primarily because of their incredible vocals and their versatility in genres and concepts. i still get so excited wondering what they’ll tackle next!! they’re just soooo unique and have one of, if not the best discographies of any group. i cannot stress enough, I. Love. RV!! also they’re funny and gay so. anyway stream monster once it drops uwu

1. what is your favorite song that’s been released during quarantine? ooooo honestly??? probably something off of Sawayama. literally every song bangs so hard i highly recommend that album to anyone!! i can’t pick a favorite off it but who’s gonna save you now is awesome and xs is just,,, chef’s kiss

2. what is your greatest mishap when you tried cooking? (or something you’ve witnessed) one time, while making soup at my late grandmother’s house on her like gas stove, i put a lid on a pot and somehow that led the pot to be engulfed in flames. IN MY DEFENSE i was like 7, and i’m great at cooking/baking now

3. what’s your go-to outfit or article of clothing? oh i love a nice dress. they can be casual or formal, and you look like you put effort into your outfit except i didn’t because i didn’t have to match anything yo!!!! also shorts have trouble fitting me cause i’m a weird body type so dresses tend to be very comfy for me

4. what is your comfort food? am i allowed to say like all food??? eating in itself is comforting,,, that sounds depressing but also i just like eating yummy food. i guess i’d say like my dad’s fried rice?? its my fave and no one makes it like him soooo

5. what singular moment in your life would you like to relive? i couldn’t tell if this meant like, a good moment you want to re-experience or go back in time and redo a moment and fix it. it’s kind of a hard question so i might cop out and go with a bit of a silly answer: i want to relive the hi touch with astro...... i wanna look at rocky’s beautiful eyes and touch moonbin’s hand ok,,,,

6. what is your favorite line and/or character from a movie, show, or book? i got a bunch but a few off the top of my head are genie lo (the epic crush of genie lo), ty lee, suki (atla), klaus, and ben (umbrella academy) 

7. if you could only choose one ice cream flavor and pizza topping/style for the rest of your life, what would it be? ice cream flavor: this very specific one from a local store that is banana ice cream with strawberries and oreo mixed in. it is heaaaavenly. as for pizza topping, i love a breakfast type pizza with an egg on top and like sausage and stuff!!!

8. what is the worst injury you’ve ever had or witnessed? funny enough, i’ve actually gotten badly injured quite a few times, and always on the face!! god hates me. the worst was probably when i hit a metal bench with my face and it took a chunk out of my cheek. i still have the scar! as for “witnessed” i accidentally broke a grown man’s rib once as a child, so i guess that would count.

9. would you rather explore the unknown of space or the bottom of the ocean? oceaaaan!! i answered this in some other game, but i like how mysterious and yet close the ocean is. like proximity wise it’s so near, yet there’s an insane amount we know nothing about. that’s so frightening but so intriguing

Press Conference

Japanese idol group, Hey! Say! JUMP members Yamada Ryosuke, Chinen Yuri, Nakajima Yuto, and Yabu Kota visited Taiwan on the 14th and held a press conference in the afternoon. The moderator for the event was Ms. Matilda Tao.  The members greeted the press in Mandarin, which they practiced furiously for 2 weeks. Nakajima Yuto even learned to say “I’m so happy to see you all” in the Minnan dialect!

[The following is in Chinese.]

Yamada: Hello, I’m Yamada Ryosuke. I’m very happy to be able to come to Taiwan again.

MC: They spent a long time learning these Chinese. Yeah, please applaud to cheer them on.

Chinen: Hello, I’m Hey! Say! JUMP’s Chinen Yuri.  I miss you all.

Yuto: Hello everyone. I’m Hey! Say! JUMP’s Nakajima Yuto. <Minnan Dialect> I am very happy to see you all.

MC: <Applause> I understand. OK.

Yuto: That’s good, that’s good.

MC: Suge… Let’s hear from “Big Brother” Yabu.

Yabu: Hello everyone. I’m Hey! Say! JUMP’s Yabu Kota. I love Taiwan.

After the greetings, Yamada immediately announced their upcoming concert at the Tokyo Arena on October 5th and 6th. At this time, the other members faked surprise, and kept saying 「真的嗎」 (is this true?) 「真的假的」 (literally: real or fake, which they just learned) and 「不知道」 (I don’t know) at Yamada.

This is the first time they returned since they held a concert here 7 years ago. Yamada said that the fans were really warm last time they came to Taiwan. At the end of the concert, they presented the guys with message cards and they were very moved. Chinen mentioned that their Japanese was very good and they spoke to them directly in Japanese. Yabu said since the fans spoke with them in Japanese, they really want to learn Chinese (Mandarin) so they can communicate with the fans.

[One reporter] mentioned that their Arena Tour in Japan has been canceled, but now they will hold a concert in Taiwan, the fans were shocked. There will probably be Japanese fans coming to the Taipei concerts. To that, Yabu answered “We would like the Taiwan concert to be very Hey!Say!JUMP like, so we will sing a lot of songs that represent us and Johnny’s. Of course, we know a lot of Japanese fans will also come to see us in Taiwan, so we want to make sure they will also enjoy the concert.”

When asked about how they prepare their bodies for the concert, Yamada said that they started playing soccer to improve their endurance and also have fun at the same time. The reporter asked if the members remind each other to not get too fat.

Yuto: “Well, there are some of us who are almost 30.”

Yabu: “Hey, who are you talking about?”

Yuto: “That will be you. Ni Ni Ni (you! you! you!)”

Yabu: “You’re talking about me.”

Yuto: “Yes. So lately, these members are not very good at remembering the dance steps. They are slow to pick up too.”

Yabu: “Stop it!”

Yuto: “The one on the far right is the worst.” [gesturing to the Lucky/Unlucky poster at the back]

Yabu: “Hikaru.”

Yuto: “He hesitates a lot.”

Since the members are all very handsome (?!), the reporter asked what they will bring with them at all times. Nakajima said “lip gloss”. Yabu said “toothbrush and toothpaste, since an idol must have a brilliant smile at all times.” Chinen said he likes to bring as little as possible, so he will just bring his wallet. Yuto reminded him that he also brought his passport today. Chinen said “yeah, luckily I did.” Before Yamada answered, the MC said she watched a program where members said when they went to play darts, Yamada very cooly brought out his own personal darts. She wanted to know if that’s true. Yamada was shocked she knew and asked how. She said she got the information from one of the members, “C-San”. Yamada turned to Chinen and said “it’s you!” before confirming.

Last month, the group released their new single “Lucky/Unlucky”. The MC asked them if there is anything they find lucky lately? Nakajima immediately answered “Being able to come back after 7 years.” Chinen added, “Since it has been 7 years, we were worried that nobody will come to see us. When we see all the people at the airport, we breathed a sigh of relief.” Yamada said he was lucky to be cast in some movies and dramas, and even though he wasn’t sure if they would be shown in Taiwan, he hoped that is a good chance for the Taiwanese audience to get to know them.  Chinen and Yabu said they took a vacation to earlier to watch soccer matches (football) and they roomed together just like when they first debut. But Yabu added that “it was to save money.”

When asked what changed in the past 7 years, the tallest member, Nakajima, immediately said “height”. 7 years ago, he was only 18, so he grew about 5cm since then. Yabu said that the era has changed from Heisei to Reiwa, the group Hey! Say! JUMP also jumped to the new era. He hoped they could also represent the new era. Yuto added “It’s not hard to predict the next group’s name.”

The MC asked if there is anything they would like to eat this time. The members asked them to make a recommendation. Ms. Tao recommended her own Szechuan restaurant. Yabu immediately asked her to treat them to a free meal. He added “If you treat us, then Chinen will not have to bring his wallet at all.”

At this time, the organizers then brought out the bubble tea with dark syrup for them to try. The members jokingly asked if the MC also owned the bubble tea shop. Ms. Tao asked them to try one by one and they all kind of looked at each other. Yamada took the first sip, was shocked, and said “delicious” (in Mandarin). Seeing Yamada was OK after drinking the tea, the rest of the members tried, each adding they also found it delicious. Yamada said that when Ms. Tao asked them to try one by one, they thought they were going to be pranked like in Japanese variety shows. Yabu said he thought they put soy sauce or something in the bubble tea instead of dark syrup.  Yamada said he actually liked sweets a lot and he ate all the chocolates in Chinen’s hotel room just now.

The press conference came to an end. Yamada said “Although we cannot tell you much about the concert itself, since the Taiwanese fans have been waiting for us for 7 years, we are looking forward to this opportunity as well. We will try our best, so please continue to support us.” They then said “Please look forward to the concert, we will work hard” in Mandarin. [Yuto] said “Thank you for waiting us” in English. [T/N: I don’t know if the author had that wrong or that’s what Yuto really said.]

After the press conference, Yamada Ryosuke had to leave immediately to go grab some quick dinner before returning to Japan.  Yabu, Nakajima, and Chinen stayed behind to continue the interview. They admit that they just memorized the Mandarin phonetically and studied using phrase books and apps. In terms of their Chinese, they each claimed they won’t lose to each other, and they trot out all the Mandarin phrases they know, like 「不好意思來晚了」 (sorry we came so late)、「不客氣」 (don’t worry about it)、「辛苦啦」 (thanks for your troubles), etc. They said they will work hard to learn more.

They said they feel that the Taiwanese fans speak very good Japanese. Ethnorelativism Refuted (or “If You Give a Mouse A German Passport”)

When I was in high school, I did an exercise in my “English” class that was basically re-analyzing the idea of whether race is real or not. I noticed that at the beginning of the exercise, there was a line that said something like “We all know a Czech and a Chinese are different, but are these differences racial?” In other words, the line seemed to be saying that, yes, a Czech and a Chinese are biologically different, but they don’t fall into racial categories like white, black, Asian, etc. I distinctly remember thinking, after I read this line, “In a couple of years, they won’t even be saying that. In a couple of years, they’re gonna dismiss ethnic differences as a “construct” too.” Lo and behold, I was right.

Before I go into the refutation, I must define what I mean by “ethnorelativism” (or “ethno-relativism”). Ethnorelativism is the belief that ethnicity and ethnic differences between people are an entirely social fact, one which is entirely relative to what customs you, as an individual, practice (hence the “relativism” part) - and there is NO biological component to ethnic divides whatsoever.

(I should also note that I am not referring to a concept of “race” or general categories here, but rather to specific ethnicities. Anyways, onward.)

Now that we have defined ethnorelativism, we can look at why this is an absurd idea. What makes it especially absurd, are the proponents of this idea, what they believe, and how they try to shoehorn it into their general worldview. There is a specific example I will be focusing on more so than others.

The three types of proponents of this idea are:

1.) Global-minded Utopians people who hold strongly to a utopian ideal of a “united planet”, where all the world can “come together” under one authority and achieve lasting world peace (or some other lofty promise of that general nature).

2.) Naïve Beginners basically me, but when I was 11-13 - one who is really still learning, and therefore looks at things through a simplistic lens, which inspires them to ask questions like “why can’t the world come together?” These people will talk about lofty ideals such as “lasting world peace”, but will have little to no plan at all as to how this will actually be achieved, only “feel-good” sounding platitudes.

3.) “Anti-Identitarians”, for lack of a better term. These people are westerners, living in the west, and usually -but not always- are of full or partial western-European descent. They are, to give an example, the liberal Londoner who will go to a British Generation Identitaire rally and say to one of the ralliers: “Why do you want Britain to remain Anglo-Celtic? What does it matter? We share 98 per cent of genes with each other, we’re really just all the same.” It is worth noting that these people, however, apply their ethnorelativism selectively. This category is the one I will mainly focus on.

With that out of the way, we will move on to the meat and potatoes: responding to the Ethnorelativist’s objection.

We share 98-99 per cent of DNA with each other, meaning we’re basically all the same. What does it matter?

To start with, this is technically true. Human beings do share ~99 per cent of DNA with each other. So you might be thinking “well that solves it.” Why does it matter whether people coming into Germany are ethnically German or not? Is there even really such a thing as “ethnically German” (that is, in a biological sense)?

Here’s where the problem comes in/ If “sharing almost all of one’s DNA” with another makes two “the same,” then... well here, let me put it this way. Do you know how much of our DNA humans share with mice? I’m going to request that you pause here and take a guess.

You may be surprised to know that mice and men actually share 92 per cent of all DNA.  Crazy, right? Well, it’s true. Those little furry guys you’ve maybe seen running around your house? You, a human, have over 90 per cent of the same genetic makeup that they do.

So surely then, a mouse wearing lederhosen and carrying a German passport is just as true a German as any!

And here’s the best part: it just gets more absurd and strange from here.

If sharing overwhelming amounts of genes makes some “the exact same” as others, and “one with them”, surely then Germany does not need migrants to fill the low-skill jobs that the low-fertility German population is not filling. No, they can just open the Chimpanzee cages at the local zoos and give them German Passports! No further foreign immigration required!

“Abraham, that’s absurd” you say “Chimpanzees can’t become German.”

Stop being such a bigot. Chimpanzees share 98 per cent of their DNA with us!  They’re just the same as we are!

Another refutation to the ethno-relativists is this: If ethnicity is merely a “social fact,” with no biological basis whatsoever, how come you can get, well, DNA tested to find out what your ethnicity and origins were? If we’re “all the same”, then there should be no biological basis to where one comes from, as there would be no biological differences in the first place - it only makes sense. Yet, clearly, we see people getting DNA tested to find out their ethnic origins. This backs the ethno-relativist into a corner. 

If there is no biological ethnicity, how could it have been that they were able to look at Elizabeth Warren’s DNA test and prove that she was less than 1/64th Cherokee? You’d think if this was merely a “social fact” they wouldn’t have been able to tell at all! Answer me this, ethnorelativists: why does the Cherokee Nation’s Official Website say that you need DNA to prove you’re Cherokee? I thought it was a social distinction only!

Something that I noted just earlier about many of these ethnorelativists that I will again make note of here is this. With many of them, that is to say, those in the third category - their ethno-relativism really only goes in one direction. See here:

I’m sure you can see it there, but the author lists three memories she has from her kindergarten. If you look towards the bottom, you will see the third:  “My friend Talia, who really, really, really wanted to be Chinese.”

Now, while some only will read the headline and the first few sentences, I decided to go in and read the whole article. (Bear in mind, this is from HuffPost, a rather “liberal” publication, so they would prob fall into the third category listed above.) There was one passage in particular that stood out from the rest.

“Eventually, we figured out that no matter how much we talked about it and wished for it, Talia could never become Chinese. And she learned to be OK with that, though no less my friend.”

Hey, wait just one second. I thought we were “all the same” because we “shared 99 per cent of genes.” I thought ethnicity had “no biological basis” and was “a social fact only relative to the cultural customs one practices.” I thought this was established by liberal ethnorelativists probably not dissimilar in this view to the lead staff at HuffPo. If this is the case, then this begs one simple question.

“Why can’t Talia become Chinese?”

No, really! According to ethnorelativism, if Talia wears traditional Chinese clothing, eats traditional Chinese cuisine, learns the language fluently, and learns the customs, then she is just as Chinese as anyone. In short, if there is no blood/biological basis to ethnicity, then Talia’s claim to being Chinese is just as valid as the author’s. This proves what I have been saying about many ethnorelativists for a long time -  their ethnorelativism is dishonest, as it only goes in one direction - towards European people(s).

You’re telling me that this “Asian” woman of Indian Subcontinental (judging by her pic Indo-Aryan) descent can call herself Scottish, and anyone who disagrees is a foolish/backward “racist”, yet this “white” girl Talia can never be Chinese no matter what? On what token? Again, this just proves that these people are totally dishonest when it comes to applying this, and that this is not fact-driven, but agenda/ideology-driven. (I believe driven by implicit anti-European racism, though they won’t admit to that easily.)

To look at more dishonesty, look no further than the fact that the liberal “white” English Londoner, who will tell an English identitarian that his quest is pointless and even wrong because “there is no such thing as Ethnic English bc we’re all the same”, yet this same English Londoner will freak out about “CULTURAL APPROPRIATION” when he/she so much as sees a “white” person in a Dashiki.

This posits another issue, by the way. If you are an ethno-relativist, you can not believe in this idea of “cultural appropriation.” If you believe that ethnicity is not biological, rather it is only social/relative to customs, then that means that I, a pale, pasty, thin-lipped, blue-eyed young man of Gaelic descent, not even born in West Africa, have just as much claim to the Dashiki as anyone. 

In fact, you know what? To heck with it. I have an announcement to make.

I am an African-American.

That’s right. This is my “new” ethnicity, and now I am entitled to opportunities such as Affirmative Action. If you object to this, you are embracing the old, backwards idea of biological ethnicity.

In all seriousness, I’m not one of these “race realists” or anything of the sort, I have some scientific gripes with them as well, actually. That being said, pretending we are “all the same, 100%” is a ridiculous lie, often used dishonestly to do things like coax unsuspecting populations into abandoning what their kin built by saying it just as much belongs to those who didn’t build it.

To clarify, I simply believe this: biological ethnic groups are real and they create cultures and societies. If you made the Polish disappear from Poland and replaced them with Scots, it would become Scotland. Likewise, if you did the same but vice-versa, then Scotland would become Poland.

So next time someone says we’re “all the same” bc of our DNA, ask them if they’d hire a Chimpanzee.
