A popular part of the Hollow Earth conspiracy theory is that there's a hole at the South Pole leading to the inside of the planet (although iirc the conspiracy theory seems to mix up the North and South Pole a lot).

It's not quite what I imagine Zood is based on. I think Zood is like "oh you go into the Bermuda Triangle and you end up on Zood". However, I think at least some of the crew will try to get back to the ordinary world at the end of the season, they'll fly up, up through a hole in the sky and then appear... at the South Pole.
