do you like horror, polyamory and the tense of atmosphere of small towns? then i have good news for you: i'm looking for an unlimited number of beta readers for my 98k words novel, a strange kind of hunger.

SYNOPSIS —

1853. sweetwater, massachusetts, swallows people whole. dr. jonathan fallow thought he escaped its grip four years ago, but he finds himself back in its clutches, as winter creeps in.

sweetwater swallows people whole, but it seems to be in the maw of something else. tracks in the forest; mutilated cattle; a howling chorus. the townsfolk are quick to cry devil, encouraged by their firebrand pastor, gabriel goodwin. jonathan is determined to prove that the creatures lurking in the woods are wolves, nothing more — but a night vigil and a glimpse of something horrifying force him to reconsider.

to expose the rotting heart of the village, he’ll have to form an alliance with a faceless traveller, a disgraced former surgeon — and the pastor’s beautiful younger brother.

Hi ! So I just wanted to say that I love your banners and I was wondering how you were making them? (Don't hesitate to keep your artistic secrets, we writers are allowed to ^^)

hey, agnes! i hope you're well and having a great day/night! and thank you so much! i'm glad to hear you love them. there's no secret, really. those banners are pretty much average compared to what fandom creators make.

anyway, which banners are we talkin' about here? stills or GIFs? i'm not very good at explaining these kinds of things but i'll try my best.

i made sure to cut. otherwise, it'll takeover the entire dashboard.

FIRST, SOURCES:

pexels - for free gorgeous stock photos. read license. other sources: pixabay, unsplash (but i use pexels a lot. it's a gem.)

dafont - for fonts. demo versions (non-commercial/personal use only) read notes from authors.

okay, here we go. i'll try my best on this part. hopefully, the photos will make it easier to understand.

open editing software. i use photoshop cc 2019.

customize the settings for new document. [Click on "Create New..." > A new window pops up. > Customize Setting > Create]. i don't have a fixed size for my banners as long as it looked like a banner. but my recent setting was 1920x295px; 300dpi (which i have to adjust when it comes to making gifs.)

open photo file. [File > New > Choose Photo > Open]

click/hold + drag on the photo to copy it to the banner file. photos from pexels have large sizes and higher resolutions. since i download photos from there, i'd have to transform it to make it fit on the canvas of the banner.

add text [Choose Text Tool]. i customize more of the text with Layer Style. [Right Click on the Text Layer > Blending Options > Layer Style window pops up] On Layer Style window, one can add colors, shadows, glows, and more.

the text was supposed to be "enchanted." SMH

once satisfied with the text position and applied styles, i merge all the layers. [Click Shift + Click last layer to select all layers.] incase something doesn't work out, i make sure to duplicate all the layers then group 'em. [Shift + Click on last layer to select all layers. > Right Click > Duplicate > Group] then i drag the group layer to the bottom of the layers and disable visibility. i make sure background layer is unlocked so you can move another layer past it.

adjust colors and more [Filter > Camera Raw Filter] a window pops up and that is where i adjust the colors and add filter. camera raw filter is only on photoshop ccs, i think. i'm after this tool that's why i'm using cc, haha. if I'm feeling a little lazy (which is, uh, every time, i go to the presets tab then choose a preset good for the banner. If it ain't workin' I go back to the basic tab to adjust exposure, temperature, tint, and more.

save [File > Save as... > Edit File Name + Choose File Type > Save]

GIF Banners. things, uh, get a bit tricky when it comes to making GIFs, especially if one is not familiar with the tools and stuff. and my process is a MESS. but i hope this was comprehensible, insightful and helpful if you're thinking of making banners for your blog ♡♡♡. i really think i'm not the right person for this kind of stuff, lol.

Elijah !! OMG... I can't tell you how relieved I am... A few weeks ago, starting on a new WIP, I decided my MC was gonna be called Eliott ^^. Which I thought was pretty smart til I remembered you posting something about Eli and I was like "Did I... Did I stole from Sam?" But, phew, no, it's just happenstance...

OH NO don't be worried about that hahah we can have 1,000 Elijahs in the world if we wanted to!! but Elliott is a wonderful name. i was going back and forth between them (since i knew i wanted his nickname to be Eli), but decided to go the religious route.

in short - you picked a great name :)

The Mouth of Ouroboros

a wip introduction (nsfw)

Like the ouroboros (a snake eating its own tail), this story begins at its end and circles in on itself: around and around.

The novel follows two immortal sapphics, one who drinks blood and one who consumes souls. For millennia, they have been madly in love, but their hunger for one another is the very thing that drives them apart. To hold the other close would quickly mean to devour; to kill. For centuries, they lived their own lives apart.

The opening is their ultimate death scene, a frantic embrace that leads to the consumption of blood and soul. In this, they become one. And, in the twilight of death, their memories flash before their eyes. Yin Lihua and Wynonna Adair relive their lives from birth to death through a shared consciousness and a fever dream.

Their worlds come together, at last.

I FINISHED!

In just under 5 months, I’ve completed the whole first draft of this manuscript, well ahead of schedule, and just in time to start a new school year! I had so much writing this story and it’s so surreal to suddenly be done? I spent YEARS working on Storge and now given, this is like 1/3 of the length, but still. So much of that time was spent just learning how to tell a story. Now I know how to do that - I took the handful of ideas that had been sitting in my phone notes since freshman year of highschool and created a story that honestly made me cry as I wrote the climax. I’ve learned so much and improved so much. It needs a lot of work, but I can see the potential and I know I have the skill to fix it up, to the point of publishing. I’ve never felt that confidence before. It’s such an incredible and empowering feeling, to prove to myself that I can do this.

It's done.

I can't wait to share it with you.

A STRANGE KIND OF HUNGER — COMPLETE !

this is an extremely belated post, but i finally finished the third draft of a strange kind of hunger! it's been about a week, and i still don't really know what to do with myself. i started working on it at the start of the year, and it's been my mainstay for eight months — through the end of my first year of university, teaching strikes, the death of my granddad and a 10-day sailing expedition... and it's done. wow! it capped out at 98k (19k extra words), 45 chapters and even more tangled, complicated relationships than the last draft.

what comes next?

i've been having a writing break, not only to replenish my writing juices but also because i gave myself slight carpal tunnel in the mad final two days of drafting. when i'm replenished, i plan on:

writing some short stories to submit to student magazines at cambridge

editing my hotspur poem for a mini zine i'm making with a friend

picking a new long-form project to be my mainstay

and querying askoh!!

as always, the very first draft is still available on wattpad, but i would caution against it. i won't be generally releasing this draft, but i will be looking for beta readers, so if you'd like a copy of the improvised ebook you can dm me on tumblr or discord (@/hotspurpercy)

Le Randonneur / The Wanderer

Genre: Windpunk (I know it’s not a thing... yet)

Status: Worldbuilding, and plotting (this is a dormant project atm)

Setting:

Water is scarce on the surface of this planet, and with the beginning of a new ice age era, it promises to become even more scarce. Rivers have started to dry out, and trade is already suffering drawbacks. Powerful cities see their influence dwindle, when, in Esleydru, two siblings create the first flying ships and, with partners of their city, create the Post Guild.

The human population on the planet is pretty small as well, with very few big cities around the world. Trade had developed using rivers as its main roads. The disappearance of these rivers could really impact all cities in the most negative way, as some are very dependent on import.

THE STORIES

This is a collection of stories which will be written in various formats: short stories, journal, chronology, legal documents...

The birth of the Post Guild, and the building of the Wanderer, the very first flying ship

The status of the Post Guild and their many amendments retracing the history of the organisation as it grows into a monopolistic company (as an accountant, this is quite fun to do)

The history of Esleydru, or how three independent towns merged into a very powerful city, which became the siege of the Post Guild.

The city of Limnai failure at overpowering the Post Guild and its consequences: men were stripped down of all powerful positions and their wives, daughters, sisters and mothers had to take over, which, after a few generations, leads to a matriarchal society through a slow but unstoppable change

The problematic neutrality of the Guild in war time

The exploration of new roads. You can read this short text in French or in English (I will probably expand it, in the form of a journal)

SOME CHARACTERS

Thomassète Lhatellier: woman, engineer, one of the two creators of the flying ships technology. When she realises her city’s government will not finance her invention, she visits old friends and business partners, sometimes in secret, and found the Post Guild.

Thonyn Lhatellier: man, engineer, one of the two creators of the flying ships technology. While his sister, Thomassète tries to find financial support, he slowly and secretly build up the first flying ship, the Wanderer.

Lorète: woman, explorator. She sets on a flying ship in the hope to discover a new pass to connect two distant cities. Though the ship is hit by a storm, she insists on pushing through.

Eyley: woman born in Limnai, captain of a flying ship, member of the Guild. Her ship arrive at a three-time religious city right at the time a siege start. The rules of the Guild are harsh and forbid to take in refugees. She has to manage her crew disputes and her own moral struggle.

But if they think that they are working together to defeat one man, they have another thing coming. The Ponsa House. Rumored to be a family of witches, they had only ever cursed one family. And that artifact was something that they could not let go into the hands of the Silver and Blue haired demons. 

Losing loved ones and having to face their families history, will the two be able to break a curse they didn’t know even existed?

Their mixed blood boiled in their veins, making their memory of the rain as hot and orange as liquid metal. “Mamaidh, when you pray to the hills, beg forgiveness for yourself.” “Perhaps I shall,” she whispered, stroking the wet and tangled fur of the calf. “Perhaps, in my next life, I shall.” She looked up slowly, with green eyes that wrenched from their heart both love and hatred, each as unbridled as the other. “Will you be listening?” Wynonna reached out and, gripping her cheek, knew that it was truly her. The flesh on her bones was too textured, too sallow, too cold and familiar to exist in a dream. She looked not like when they last spoke, but as she did when they buried her, some twenty yards over her shoulder. “Mamaidh, I will listen, if you call me by my name.” “You know I cannot say–” “Then neither can I hear you.” The woman wrenched herself away, burying her face in the ewe’s tufted wool.
