your name is a prayer in my heart.
Tumblr media
summary: mhin brings li some plums, and li learns how to write her name.
notes: 1.3k words, themes of chinese diaspora and different reactions to the idea of losing culture (i'm the #1 chinese mhin truther)
Tumblr media
There’s a river of plums cascading down Li’s lap, more plums than she’s ever seen in her life. They shine like red rubies, glistening and lush. She can imagine their fragrant taste through their appearance alone.
She picks one up, cradling it in her cupped palm, before sinking her teeth into the succulent flesh, tenderly giving away under her sharp teeth, juice trickling down her palms.
It’s sweeter than a memory, and each bite sings down her throat.
“They were being sold for a limited time,” Mhin explains stiffly. “A group of traders got lucky and brought some back. I got the last of them.”
Li nods, but her attention is drawn to the fruit in her lap. Plums, so many plums. She’ll finish them all before they rot, while they’re still ripe. Not a single one will go to waste. It would be an extraordinary sin in a dying world.
“You have something on your face,” Mhin says, tapping their cheek.
“Okay,” Li says, taking another bite.
Mhin frowns, then grabs her chin, tilting her head up as they carefully wipe at her cheek with the flat of their palm, flinging juice off their fingers.
“Be more careful,” they scold. “Are you a child?”
Li nods again, cradling all of the plums in her lap like children of her own. The last time she had a plum had been over a dozen years ago, when she was still living in the ruins of a long-destroyed city. It’s no more than ashes and memory now, but it taught her everything she needed to learn: how to fight, how to survive, and how the taste of a plundered plum taken from the wares of an unsuspecting merchant is sweeter than anything else in the world.
“I haven’t had one in forever,” she says happily, biting into the sweet flesh again. “It’s the first fruit I ever stole. How did you know?”
Mhin sighs. “Why am I not surprised? I didn’t know that. I just thought of you when I saw them.”
“Hm?”
“Your name,” Mhin says impatiently. “It means plum, doesn’t it?”
Li tilts her head. “Oh, yeah.”
Mhin purses their lips. “You should respect the name your parents give you.”
“They didn’t give me that name. I named myself that,” she says easily.
“Seriously?”
“Yeah!” Li says. “I mean, what does it matter? I’m surprised you even know that language, Mhin. It’s pretty rare to find someone who does. Better to know the common tongue, right?”
There’s a long moment in which Mhin doesn’t reply. They only stare at the plums in her lap, their gaze unfocused and foggy. “It’s culture,” Mhin says finally. “It’s art, and an important part of history and civilization. Languages reveal much about the people and the time it comes from.”
“I guess,” Li says. This is a scarce sentimental moment from Mhin, no bluster, no pretense. Though their tone is steady, the tension between their brows and the line of their shoulder reveal everything she needs to know.
“You’re not curious at all? About the past? About your own culture?”
“Anyone from that culture who I used to know is dead or gone,” she says tranquilly.
“I’m still here,” Mhin says, a quick, sharp sentence, shot like a bullet. They turn away from her, raising their hand to their mouth, withdrawing.
Li continues eating her plum as Mhin recollects themself, watching them with a distant, drowsy animal interest. They’re passionate, more so than she could have guessed they would have been about this topic. Dead languages, lost cultures, old civilizations: it has nothing to do with her. The past is the past, trivial and gone, and the future is a distant fog on the horizon, so it’s only the past that matters. That’s something that you can shape, that still holds relevance.
A forgotten language could never fill her stomach, or keep her warm on the streets. It’s why it was one of the first things she discarded, so long ago. Why would she keep it when she can’t even read in the common tongue, anyways? Her grasp on her old language is tenuous; she can speak and understand simple phrases, but nothing more.
Mhin, the eternal scholar and scientist, might care about it, but it holds no interest for her. What drives them and their persistence? It’s baffling, to chase the dead.
Li licks her fingers when the last plum is gone, juice soaked into her flesh, when Mhin abruptly beckons to her. There’s a stick in their hand, some scraggly, half-broken cast-off they picked up when she wasn’t watching.
“You’re hopeless,” they say. “Did you really finish all of the plums already?”
“If you wanted some, you could have told me. Want a taste?” She leans in, and they pull back, flushing red from the tip of their nose to their ears.
“Absolutely not! Get away from me.”
“What are you doing?”
Mhin crouches in the dirt of the alleyway, cape dragging along the ground, and Li hovers close to their side, bending her knees so she can rest her hands on her thighs.
In the hard packed dirt, tamped down by countless miscreant feet, Mhin struggles to pull the stick through the muck, making several quick strokes to form a single character.
“It’s your name,” they say shortly, holding the stick up for her. “Try writing it. I’ll guide you through. Strokes always start top to bottom, left to right.”
Li crouches and takes the piece of wood, the rough bark still warm from Mhin’s hand. At their guidance, she makes her own clumsy marks. The stick drags reluctantly through the ground, making uneven furrows. Her lines are nowhere as neat as Mhin’s, whose handwriting is swift and elegant, with no wasted movement. Her “plum” is lumpy by comparison, a defective one that would have been tossed away at harvest.
But Mhin hums to themself as they watch their characters lined up, side by side. “This is a good effort, considering it’s you. Even if you can’t write anything else, you should at least know your own name.”
“Hey,” Li says, shuffling closer to them until their shoulders bump. There’s a loose wisp of hair flying around Mhin’s face, and she carefully tucks it behind the delicate shell of their ear, knuckles brushing against it. She can feel them tense beneath her, but they don’t pull away. “How do you write your name?”
“My name?”
“Your name,” she repeats. “Show me.”
“It’s too complicated for you,” they retort. “You’re just going to mess it up. I thought you didn’t care about this language, anyways.”
“I don’t,” she says. “But if I don’t know anything else, I want to know your name.”
“You’re awful.”
“So you aren’t going to show me? Oh. Do you not know how to write it?” she asks innocently.
They yank the stick from her hands. “Don’t put me in the same category as someone like you. I know more than just a handful of basic characters.”
Their eyebrows are furrowed in concentration as they work, and Li can’t help herself from poking a finger in the raised flesh. “You’re thinking too hard. Hey, your name is pretty.”
“Stop distracting me. Can’t you keep your hands to yourself?”
“Nope.” When they turn to her, mouth parted in some obvious chastisement, Li kisses them, lips swallowing all of their protests. When she runs her tongue along their bottom lip, exploring, they grip her forearms so hard she can feel their nails digging through her shirt.
Ah, this is it. She doesn’t understand their academic pursuits, their grandiose words and ideals, but their body? It’s so open and easy to read, a book she can lovingly thumb through to find pages by memory alone.
When she glances down, their name is written in the ground, nestled close to hers. “Mhin” and “Li.” In this world, it’s the only thing she needs.

I do wonder how different your character would be if they lived on Beforus instead of Alternia ?
I mean even their Alternia is not canon Alternia, they live within the empire but they don't live on the kid planets, they are in Aleph Nulls universe of course. Either way who knows, I would generally need to know more about that universe than what was provided in the canon comic to come up with an answer. I'm sure they would be "different" to an extent, to what extent though idk.

I was talking to my friend @eggothemusicalwaffle about how the idea that “race doesn’t matter” became so harmful. People will say race doesn’t matter and use that mentality to invalidate POC experiences. that’s how you get white feminists talking about how black women are trying to “segregate” the female experience. as if black women talking about they are treated differently to white women in society because they are black is somehow a threat to the ‘greater’ war on misogyny. the colorblind mentality leads to a refusal to recognize intersectionality and how people are affected by it, and that's dangerous.
my race is an important part of who i am. when people straight up say it doesn't matter, it feels like a cop-out. it's important to acknowledge how my experience as a black person have affected how i see the world and how i am treated by others. it is important to recognize that people of different races have different experiences, and it is important to realize that we are all different, and that is okay.
and race isn't just a divider. someone's race, and the culture that comes with that, can be a beautiful part of who they are. people shouldn't have to be a monolith of cultures, thoughts, and ideas for there to be equality. someone's race is not a burden that you need to erase.
so i just think that, instead of ignoring race, we should say, “race shouldn’t divide us.” instead of saying race isn't important we should say, “race doesn't make someone superior or inferior.” instead of saying that we don't see color we should say, “i see you, and i see the parts that make you who you are, and that is beautiful.”
and we should also say, “my race shapes my experiences and the experiences of others, and we should learn from that.” we should believe, “race does make us different, but not in a bad way. not in the way we’ve been taught.”

Ateez MV Teaser Thoughts
The preview starts and ends with the moon, the cromer, and all that important stuff but I’m not feeling big brain enough to deal with that just yet, so I’ll dive right in with Dreamy Day.
Tumblr media
First off, seeing them back at the abandoned wearhouse in Universe A gave me so many emotions I thought I wouldn’t have. It’s just so nostalgic. When listening/watching in chronological order that’s always what comes first; the wearhouse. I very much wasn’t expecting it to come up again. Not now.
It (paired with my theory on Crescent 2 and the rest of the MV clips) really got me thinking. Ok, so Dreamy Day is a dream about the wearhouse days. Before their group fell apart, before Halajoong showed up with the cromer, before they lost Yeosang and then got him back, before they witnessed death, before they even entered Universe Z. It really makes sense. If you were lost, and having a hard time, you would dream of when things were good, right?
I ran a few other theories through my head, like maybe it’s Halateez wishing they had a past like that? Or maybe that Feverteez ran away and went back to world A? But it just seems improbable. (At least for Dreamy Day) The teaser is called “The World EP. Fin: Will ‘World A’ Preview” so it’s probably safe to assume it’s about Feverteez not Halateez, and while they could've gone back home at some point, the placement of Crescent 2 and the lyrics of Dreamy Day suggest otherwise. So I’m sticking with that option.
Dreamy Day is Feverteez dreaming of the past. But it’s still just a dream.
Tumblr media
The rest of the MV’s could go a completely different direction. Assuming that their unit songs (which I had previously assumed to be lore unrelated) are lore related, there are a handful directions the latter half of the album could go.
1- It could be an anime level flashback explaining their individual pasts, how they met, their emotions, and emphasizing how the past is affecting what they do in Strictland. That would make sense from a story perspective, and a solid chunk of flashback could be justified timeline wise if they’re in a dreamscape.
Going with that theory Matz, iT’s You, and Youth would be about Matz, Woosangsan, and Yungi being/becoming friends. Whereas Everything would be about someone Jongho left behind due to either time travel or depression.
Tumblr media
2- It could be them going off and doing their own things. Frankly MATZ, iT’s You, and Youth’s settings still feel fairly dystopian, and Everything’s teaser takes place almost entirely indoors. So it’s possible they’re in Strictland, or perhaps in the future of Universe A.
If they’re still dreaming it would make sense that they’re in different places. It would also explain the more introspective or otherwise nonsensical scenes like this vv
Tumblr media
3- It’s more related to Halateez than I originally gave it credit for. Yea it’s “World A” but who says Halateez can’t go to world A? Halajoong did it before, and besides they would’ve had to have traveled there at least once on accident to know how to repeat it.
Actually, I’ve been thinking about that for a while. After learning how to time/universe travel did Halateez ever just drop into other worlds to take a break from their own shitty one? Is that where they learned so much about music and art in a world that outlaws it? On top of that, other than the Real we know almost nothing about Halateez other than that they know how to Time/Universe travel, are fighting the government, and look just like Feverteez.
Tumblr media
I only suggest this theory because the setting and characterization in the Youth teaser make me think that it’s Halateez. Yunho is dancing in a room that is reminiscent of his brother’s old room, but at the same time, it’s not that room. The roughness, and desperation really shines through. It reminds me how much those two really had going on in their lives in the lore. Canonically Yunho has lost his brother twice. Like, think about that. Perhaps it’s Feverteez Yungi finally letting loose. Or maybe that whole Fever/Halateez merging into one theory is onto something…
Tumblr media
4- It could be Feverteez going home and dealing with their own problems. Learning how things have changed, grieving the past, or perhaps embracing the present.
I mean, what happens if Feverteez really does go home? Everything will be different. They will be different. Even if they return to the same place in the future it will never be the same as it was in the past. Even if Halateez and Feverteez are separate people, their time together will have influenced them. That and the threat of death they faced everyday. Seeing the suffering of others. Feeling their own power and helplessness. Witnessing death. (The Will diaries really held nothing back.)
There’s something beautiful and horrible about coming home a changed person. On one hand, life is good. Home is good. But on the other hand….Somehow coming home after a long time makes you realize all the messed up things about your everyday life you never noticed before. You have a lower tolerance for people’s bullshit when you’ve looked death in the eyes.
Tumblr media
At some point in their journey they crossed the point of no return. (*cough* Wonderland *cough*) They will really never be the same people again. There was a point where the people they once were died.
I don’t know unit MV’s will be them going back home, but even still it’s an interesting point to consider…
Do they even have a home? In reality? Outside of their dreamy day?
✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧//✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧
Anyway, as always feel free to add your opinions. (*^v^*)b I’m just so excited!!! Like, not only are they feeding us good music & good content, but it’s lore heavy too? Ateez never disappoints fr T^T

Hi, I have a question what does vegemite taste like?Im from México and its not something you can buy at any store so im really curious. Tbh i cant take my USA online friends who (had some acces to it) opinions cus really they about die when I tell them that a pinch of salt/pepper is not proper seasoning. All of them told me its black death but well the majority of australian love it soo yeah im really curious. ( Sorry for the long ass question , love ur art♡)
Aw thank you ahahah
Vegemite is a spread made from yeast and vegetable and and spice additives and imo is a very unique flavour! If you've ever been passed a brewery the smell always reminds me of it because of the yeast ahaha
It's very savory, and if you're first trying it out I do recommend spreading it thinly over buttered bread. Maybe with some cheese too. Whenever I see people 'try' it online, they always just fucking. Heap it on. And just like, why would you??? Thats disgusting stop

The fact that people purposely misinterpret things just to disagree with them is so funny to me. Like “I don’t agree with X because [fundamental misinterpretation of X that proves they actually agree with X]”
Something like “I don’t agree with death of the author because it removes responsibility for the author’s wrongdoings” ? That’s not necessarily what death of the author means afjdhdjhks
The actual death of the author essay from 1967 by roland barthes? It argues that “to give a text an Author is to impose limit on that text, to furnish it with a final signified, to close the writing.” It’s not so much about ignoring an author’s wrongdoings as it is opening a text to an endless array of meaning

Hello, fellow Eugene lover! I'm more than happy to oblige when it comes to simping over this koala bear.
I like to think this man doesn't know shit about being a greaser. He took one look at an actual greaser and was like, "Yeah, I wanna revolve my entire appearance around that!" He's too smug to realize or care about people calling him a poser. He's living his best life, looking like the coolest dude you'll ever meet. And honestly, that makes him incredibly sexy in my eyes.

There are people out there named "James Bond" and there's a whole short documentary about their struggles, but it's just made me think that if your last name was Bond you could name your child "Bond James Bond" and that child would struggle to be taken seriously for the rest of their life
