MONDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “You Won’t Be Seeing Me Anymore” by Tim (a.k.a. Chris) Andrews https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8bhFTWVNVU  This was recorded in London, but it has a folk-pop California sound that could’ve come from Laurel Canyon or San Francisco circa 1967 (when this song was made). On a cosmic jukebox this track would play next to It’s A Beautiful Day (“White Bird”) and Love. It was written by Gordon Haskell, Tim/Chris Andrews’s former bandmate from Fleur de Lys. Gordon is often noted for his role in an early incarnation of King Crimson, but beyond that he was a prolific singer-songwriter who, after years as a “starving folksinger,” found success with the hit single “How Wonderful You Are” and the platinum album HARRY’S BAR.

The lyrics are about seasonal love, coming from a young man who travels for a long time and leaves his troubled sweetheart behind. The track (w/Gordon on bass and guitar) was produced by Paul Clay (Ace Kefford, Sharon Tandy, early Yes) and Mike Noble (Joan Armatrading, Fleur de Lys, John Kongos). It was the B-side of “Sad Simon Lives Again,” Tim’s first solo single after he’d signed with renowned producer, promoter, and music executive Tony Hall (who’d plugged The Beatles, Carmen McRae, and later inked Black Sabbath’s first record deal). Tim later reverted to his real name Chris and went on as a solo act and a collaborator with Roger Daltrey, David Essex, and Davy Jones (Monkees).

Just watched “Brave New Jersey” (Tony Hale ahhhhhhh) and during the end credits song, I can’t but notice that the person singing sounds familiar. I looked it up and it was Tony singing!!!

Clifford the Big Red Dog (2021)

While Clifford the Big Red Dog is missing some essential ingredients, it’s good-natured, with a nice message for the young children it aims to entertain. There’s not much here for adults but you could do much worse.

Lonely middle schooler Emily Elizabeth Howard (Darby Camp) is being babysat by her down-on-his-luck uncle Casey (Jack Whitehall) when they run into Mr. Bridwell (John Cleese), an eccentric animal-lover who gives Emily a red puppy. After “Clifford” suddenly grows to gigantic size, he catches the attention of Lifegro, a genetics company that wants to experiment on the oversized pooch.

There’s something clumsy about the screenplay, which first has Clifford separated from his mother, then rescued by Bridwell, then handed over to Emily. What’s weird is that Clifford is his unusual red color BEFORE he grows big, which makes you wonder if Bridwell had anything to do with the canine’s strange size… despite his magical abilities being explicitly shown. Also strange is the casting. Emily speaks with an American accent. Her uncle Casey does too but his sister/Emily’s mom (played by Sienna Guillory) is British. It means the film has to cram in a line about how he moved away when they were kids but she moved to the States to raise her daughter. It’s a puzzling choice but a trivial issue. The real problem concerns Emily and Clifford’s relationship.

This film’s story is not revolutionary. It’s E.T., The Iron Giant, and Bumblebee: a lonely child gets a strange, wonderful/magical friend that some official/corporate guy wants to take away. That’s fine as long as the humor is effective (which it mostly is) and the love between the girl and her pet is felt. That's what's lacking. There are few scenes of Emily and Clifford playing, helping each other out of various comedic jams, or bonding. In their place, we get several (some might say too many) of Emily’s quirky neighbors. To be fair, they effectively get the film’s message front and center: Like Clifford, many of them could be called weird but in this wild adventure, their unique skills/attributes are exactly what is needed to rescue the big red dog from the nasty owner of Lifegro, Mr. Peter Tieran (Tony Hale).

A long hard look at Clifford the Big Red Dog does the film no favors but something about it somehow manages to wriggle its way into your heart. The scenes of puppy chaos are funny. Emily’s only friend at school is Owen (Izaac Wang) and the two young actors play well with each other. Acting-wise, they do pretty well considering they were acting against a green ball on-set. Thankfully, the references to TikTok and other similar social media are reduced to a minimum and the focus is primarily on Emily, Clifford, and their friends.

Although adults will have seen pretty much all of Clifford the Big Red Dog in some other form, the children they're accompanying to the theater won't. For them, I will call it a good movie. Overall, it's gentle, moves along quickly, and has a fair number of laughs. That's enough. (Theatrical version on the big screen, November 6, 2021)

Depois de muita expectativa, a Disney e Pixar liberaram o primeiro pôster oficial de Divertida Mente 2. O pôster já nos prepara para novidades com a Riley, com o dizer "Grandes mudanças. Novas emoções".

A DIsney Pixar também liberou o primeiro teaser oficial, nele conseguimos ver que novas emoções vão chegar na "sala de controle de Riley". Além da Felicidade, Tristeza, Medo, Nojinho e Raiva, a primeira nova emoção apresentada no teaser é a famosa Ansiedade. Ainda seremos apresentados a Vergonha, o Tédio e a Inveja.

Chris Andrews after he cut loose from Fleur de Lys in 1967. He was signed by renowned producer, promoter, and music executive Tony Hall, who’d plugged The Beatles, Carmen McRae, and later inked Black Sabbath’s first record deal. “Sad Simon” was tailored for Tim’s voice by songwriter Mike Noble (who went on to work with Joan Armatrading, John Kongos, and Ralph McTell). It’s a bittersweet song about waiting for love, but Simon is going to rebound. The single didn’t chart when Parlophone issued it in December 1967, but it was a solid debut and it eventually found an audience with fans of the “baroque/chamber pop” subgenre —when classical music forms and instrumentation are integrated with psychedelic rock, championed by The Beach Boys, Beatles, Bee Gees, Left Banke, Moody Blues, Procol Harum, etc.—though the jazzy bridge comes out of the Zombies playbook. 

If this is your introduction to Chris Andrews, he’s a British singer-songwriter and recording artist whose songs have been covered by Roger Daltrey, David Essex, and Davy Jones (Monkees). Under the name Tim Andrews he was a champion of late 60s psychedelic pop and (later), as Kris Ryder, he released New Wave synthpop sides in the 80s, and he’s still cranking out new music to the world.

Get ready to hit the road. The world of old friends and new friends collide when Bonnie’s family take a road trip. The opening scenes — that flashback, the rescue, the goodbye — oh ma heart! Bonnie’s role assignments were as humorous as the toys reactions to them. Forkie’s origin (like he’s trash, literally caming out of a garbage can), the details included in him (the googly eyes, the pipe cleaner arms and all their tiny minute movements.) and all his escape attempts, were amusing. Gabby-Gabby and her ventriloquest doll bodyguards/assistant guys were chilling - and again their details (Gabby-Gabby’s eyes, the lolling of the Ventriloquest doll’s heads and limbs) were all done so well (even the skunk vehicle and Bo Peep’s tools, accessories, and outfits, all so detailed and well done.) Seeing all the toys stuck in the RV work together was interesting and the rescue/stealth mission in the resale shop - not to mention the history/hierarchy of the items within that Bo Peep sort of explains.
