Note
I found this funky spider outside my house in SC and wanted to know if you could ID them maybe-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My device doesn't pick up color very well, but this pretty fella was very vibrant yellow and dull green striped, with a red belly!
Trichonephila clavata, Joro spider. a fairly recently established nonnative species, which apparently isn’t threatening to North American ecosystems. I’d like to see one someday and given how quickly they spread, might get the chance soon!

Halloween Countdown Day 8
The Jorogumo (Spider Woman of Japanese Folklore)
Beware of the sinister Jorogumo in the forest at Halloween!
My second costume character of 2023 is inspired by the Jorogumo yokai of Japanese folklore. The Jorogumo's name means "entangling bride" or "prostitute spider" in Japanese. Yokai are supernatural monsters of traditional stories and myths in Japan. They are often based on real creatures or are explanations for natural phenomenon. For example, the Jorogumo is a real spider called the Golden Orb-Weaver (Trichonephila clavata) that has lived for at least 400 years and attained magical powers over its unnaturally long life.
The Jorogumo is said to be a solitary predator who lives in caves, abandoned houses, and forests all over Japan since ancient times. They are powerful deceivers and shapeshifters who use their cunning to trap strong young men in order to eat them. She takes the form of a captivatingly beautiful young woman to lure her favourite prey into her web, where the unfortunate man is bound with unbreakable spider webs while the Jorogumo feasts on him over many days. Jorogumo are often depicted as sexy women with spider limbs surrounded by spider webs and the skeletons of their many victims.
Like a lot of Japanese yokai stories, not only are they great spine chillers but also moral fables showing examples of the type of people and situations one should avoid in real life! Nowadays, the real life Jorogumos use the world wide web rather than a spider web to trap their victims and bleed them dry of money.
Watch out for my Jorogumo character, who may lure you into the forest and trap you in her spider web!

What are Joro spiders? The invasive species spreading in the US
Tumblr media
The Joro spiders are sometimes called “parachuting” spiders because they can move by shooting out a long strand of silk that gets caught in the wind and carries them through the air. What are Joro spiders? The Joro — trichonephila clavata — is part of a group of spiders known as “orb weavers” for their highly organized, wheel-shaped webs. Common in Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan, Joro females have colorful yellow, blue and red markings on their bodies. They can measure 3 inches across when their legs are fully extended. Giant, feral goldfish wreaking havoc in Great Lakes The Joro appears better suited to colder temperatures than a related species, researchers at the University of Georgia said in a paper published last year. Are Joro spiders dangerous? According to scientists, the Joro spider only poses a threat to the things that get caught in its web. This can include butterflies, cockroaches, stink bugs and wasps but not humans. “We have no evidence that they’ve done any damage to a person or a pet,” Clemson assistant professor Dave Coyle said.

id: a photo of a joro spider in her web, with a cylindrical prey item and a male joros spider on the other side of the prey. the female joro spider is a large black and yellow spider with striped legs and a small area of red on her underside. the male spider is a smaller spider with a dark colored body though he still has lighter stripes on his legs.

I am begging the media to stop making harmless bugs out to be terrifying monsters in their headlines. I’ve seen Joro spiders all over the news lately with these super scary-sounding headlines. Sometimes the truth is buried somewhere in the article, but how many people just read a headline and move on?
Tumblr media
So let’s get a few things straight...
1. Parachuting or ballooning is a common method of dispersal used by countless species of spiders, primarily when they are spiderlings and very VERY tiny. They’re not flying, they’re sending out a little parachute of silk that gets caught in the wind. This is, among other things, a way to avoid competing with their siblings for resources. Adults don’t do it, so there will not be giant spiders flying through the sky and landing on your head.
2. Joro spiders are non-native, but so far scientists have no proof of detrimental effects to our native ecosystems. Given the scope of their spread so far, it’s likely they’ll become naturalized and be a new fixture in the US.
3. They aren’t “invading.” They were brought here in 2013 from their native habitat in Asia by human activity, and now they’re thriving because our climate is perfect for them.
4. Joro spiders are not dangerous. Bites may be painful, but their venom is not medically significant, meaning even if you were bitten (unlikely), you would most likely not need medical attention unless you developed an infection.
5. They can get rather big, but we have several native species of spider that are just as large.
6. Joro spiders are orbweavers and prefer weaving their large webs between trees or other vegetation to catch flying prey. They have no reason to come into your house, although they may make webs on or near your home.
Anyway Joro spiders are beautiful let’s admire one
