Judge: Trump Can’t Review Evidence in Documents Case Unsupervised

   A U.S. judge in Florida on Monday ordered defense lawyers for former President Donald Trump not to release evidence in the classified documents case to the media or the public, according to a court filing.

   The order from U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart also put strict conditions on Trump’s access to the materials.

   “The Discovery materials, along with any information derived therefrom, shall not be disclosed to the public or the news media, or disseminated on any news or social media platform, without prior notice to and consent of the United States or approval of the Court,” the order filed on Monday said.

   It also specified that Trump “shall not retain copies” and that he may only review case materials “under the direct supervision of Defense Counsel or a member of Defense Counsel’s staff.”

   The order granted a motion filed last week by prosecutors who had asked the court to put conditions on how the defense stores and uses the documents.

   Trump, who is the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, was indicted on federal charges earlier this month. He was accused of illegally retaining classified government documents after leaving the White House and then conspiring to obstruct a federal probe of the matter.

   Trump has pleaded not guilty to all 37 counts in court.

   The former president faces other legal hurdles, having been indicted by New York prosecutors in connection with an alleged hush-money payment to a porn star.

   Special Counsel Jack Smith, who was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland, is also probing Trump’s alleged role in actions surrounding his loss in the 2020 presidential election that culminated in an attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

This article in Time is an awfully long-winded way to say one thing:

We all know Trump has dementia and a very tenuous hold on reality itself. It’s obvious even to the most casual observer; we only have to read a printed paragraph from one of his speeches that hasn’t been stripped down to make a coherent sound bite. Yet our national media simply doesn’t talk about it, preferring instead to chase after any misstatement from Biden, as if he sounds any different now from how he’s sounded for the past five decades.

People make a difference, and it's always worth reaching out to your legislators and telling them what you think.

Senators' info is pretty easy to find, since you've got two for every state (even DC and other non-state people have someone they can call!) but sometimes it's a little tricky remembering who your representative is, especially now with the district lines having changed up. So check your address here and then call their office — I've found more luck getting hold of an actual person at their local offices rather than the DC one, fwiw.

Context for non-Ohioans: On August 8th we're having a vote on something called Issue 1 which would change the voter majority on amendments to the Ohio constitution from 50% to 60% (!!!). This is something conservatives want to see pass because in November there's going to be a vote on the bill to codify legal abortion into the Ohio constitution. Ohio's split almost 50/50 on abortion rights, meaning if Issue 1 passes and raises the voter majority then there's no way legal abortion will get amended into our constitution.

Steve Chabot, the skeevy republican in the video here, lost his reelection to a democrat. Chabot was pro-Trump.

Do any of you also suspect that the “difficulty” some news outlets see with Fani Willis’s case is rooted in a subtle prejudice against the intelligence of a local state official vs a federal one? Plus, she’s black and a woman?

Frankly, it will be surprising to me if she doesn’t at least get a dozen convictions out of her work, and her case will write the overall narrative for the history books by tying all these thread together. She’s very experienced with RICO, and very experienced overall—her office has prosecuted over 12,000 cases since she’s been in it.

Trump’s team must be desperately seeking a way to move this case to a federal court so he can drop it if he wins the election. (Which is why Smith has to keep it small and move fast—his is over if a Republican takes office.)
