Finally finished up some oc basefills!! These are surprisingly hard pfh, but fun !! In order this is Noctilu, Acacia, and General Hail! The latter two are v old ocs of mine that have been redesigned <3

Okay heres some bonus stuff!! I really liked how some of the lineart was done so here is the raw lineart for anyone interested + a speedpaint (?) of General Hail’s design process ! These guys were really fun to work on despite it taking me so long for no good reason ,,, heres some design notes on them all <3

Noctilu has a Lancier attached to the leather holster as he is the main fisher aboard the pirate ship he is part of

Noct’s line-wing patterns arent always visible, but some nightwing seers claim that the lines help them trace future timelines. Since Noct is a Nightwing Hybrid he wonders if those claims hold any truth

Acacia is a botanist out of the Scorpion Den ! Her bag is filled with journals, loose note paper, and writing supplies.

General Hail was hard as fuck to design guh . He is purple because I want him to be <3

Although he was part of the War of Sandwing Succession, he was born without his back leg and has had a prosthetic forever! Plus he was a very skilled fighter so most of his scars were inflicted by those he let harm him for whatever reason he had in the moment

Astrolabe I gave up on trying to redesign I’m so sorry bud. Hes Married to Noctilu (they have matching earring) and is the ships cartographer / navigator, so his quiver is actually filled with maps and scrolls. He keeps his actual astrolabe and sextant in his bags.

I just saw that insane Sasha Nein art you did, where he’s smoking and his mom is in it. I have to say that was some of the COOLEST ART I HAVE EVER SEEN ON THIS SITE, EVER. And I saw that you said you draw on your phone?!?! I’m actually begging you to tell me what app you use pLEASE (also I have always wanted to know how to render but I don’t even know how to start is there any in progress shots you can show so I have something to go on ;U; ty)

GYAHHHHH THANKSS YOUI wwhhh… I had written more in response to this but… Tumblr crashed and deleted it so… Im trying to remember all the points i went over haha… But… Yes… I do draw on the phone with my fingers. The key? Ibispaint… Its really good. You just gotta believe in yourself…. Its rlly not that hard :)

But… On rendering, i feel like everyone renders differently… It really depends on yout artstyle… But i will gladly go over my process (again(thanks tumblr)). Ill be using a different piece as an example (the one of sasha? I didnt render that in my normal way. Just kinda Drew Shapes) -

So i always.. sketch it out. Roughly. Get the details down, yes, but this part will pretty much be invisible, so it doesnt have to be perfect. (yees there was gonna be red string but i didnt like it so. Goodbye red strintg.. Sorry boyd) In this piece (and some others) i redid the sketch a few times to get everything placed and sized how i like it…

After this..? I just put in the colors under the sketch. Here, id like to get them relatively like how i want them to be (though sometimes ill just put in a single color and choose the colors WHILE im rendering)… Its Good To Keep Them Messy I Think

And then… I put all the layers into a folder and render it all on a new layer…. Its that simple… Some people will do it on a bunch of layers to keep all the different elements separate, but i feel its confusing and youll get tripped up in all the layers… I simply use one. Sometimes ill make a new layer if im not feeling confident about a detail, but, usually, its just one. The colors i laid down? im simply colorpicking those and making them more defined, usually blockier.. And dont worry! Its easy to move things around, having to repaint some stuff isnt as bad as you think (ESPECIALLY if you dont use lineart. I hate lineart sometimes😌)

And its done after i get alll the details i want in (sometimes, you dont need to detail everything. Focus on whats important! If you like..). Well, the drawing part is, atleast. I usually run it over with some special brushes i made to make it look more scratched up and dirty. Then i do some chromatic abberation shenanigans! And some noise. Then… Its done :)

Though… if there is one thing i must say…… You can wiggle around the hue and saturation a little while rendering it makes it more interesting and flavorful… You can wiggle it around ALOT to make things look holographic…. Oh! and keep it simple… And also desaturating colors a lot combined with the context of other colors around them can do some crazy stuff… I can make orange look like green 🕴️ (Okay that was . More than one thing. And?)

But really..:: Do what YOU want. Its your art :) I cant tell you what to do! Do all of these things. Do none of these things. Just do what YOU want to. Nothing I or ANYONE says dictates what you must do or what is correct in your expressions.

Are Catra and her text still desaturated? I am noticing a distinct washing out of color and I wanted to make sure it wasn't a trick of my eyes. At some point, you're going to have to post Confident!Color! Catra next to one of the mild-desaturates. I remember her going grayer / almost black and white at the end of Season 4 if I'm remembering things correctly. 2. I... kind of feel bad for some of the weirder asks you get. I apologize for going hard and personal on my own lately. My brain has been all over the place. But seeing that Wrong Hordak ask and that "sexually submissive" thing made me go WHY? to whomever wrote it? I have faith that you're going to write his character however he fits best (and you made Entrapta extra-thirsty because that's funny), but that question strikes me as weird because... I just don't think of Wrongie in that way? I've always seen him as someone who'd had a shock to his system and was in need of building from there... I remember that question you got a while back about clones purring that freaked you out. As someone who's been chest-deep in Horde-clone sub-fandom for some time... I can tell you that... it's...weird. People in it are weird. I have seen things. I think I've been exiled away from some of the weirdest and most insular of it, but yeah. The purring-thing started out with the idea of baby-bats purring and chirping on bat-rescue videos I think and people were thinking it was cute and applied it to "spacebats," and then people started going... other directions with it. There's a lot of clone-fandom stuff that is relatively tame and just stuff about exploring identity, (and that's the fanwork that I like), but... I guess I feel sorry that you get some of the weirder asks about them sometimes? _freedfromthegalactichivemind

And for the other part - look, I'm very much live and let live. If people want to think about the clones being submissive, fine, whatever, it's just not my cup of tea. You put it absolutely right in that I tend not to be overtly sexual on the blog except where it's so exaggerated that it's funny. But largely, it doesn't make a jot of difference to my life how anyone imagines them fucking*, so go nuts. Have a thirty-person underwater orgy with neon lights and electic shocks... I really don't care enough to have a strong opinion about it.

*obvious exclusions apply. I would assume that's clear, but this is tumblr and if I don't state in plain English that it excludes actual crimes, I'll be called something I don't understand.

hello!!! so sorry for the late response, i kinda left tumblr for a bit haha. And yeah, i have tips!!

Many number one tip for rendering is to be aware of the environment. you can use cool colours for highlights and warm colours for shadows, but you have to be acutely aware of how that lighting affects the subject. Reflection is a huge one i've learnt recently;

An apple sitting on a table is just that, an apple. But apples are smooth, highly reflective surface. Thus, they will reflect the colour of the table, as well as have lots of highlights.

Another important thing for me was beginning some very bad painting to better understand colour. if you have, say, an orange light and a green subject.

You need to be aware that the green is made of yellow and blue, and the orange is yellow and red. So, the green subject's yellow tones will be VERY visible because of the yellow tones in the light.

I like to use desaturated complementary tones to compliment the saturated highlights. for ex., a desaturated magenta (very close to red) to compliment a saturated aqua green (very close to normal green)

It was over. It was finally over.

The last shard of the Paradox Prism snapped in with a magnetic pull, joining back with the other four. A burst of light and energy washed over Green Hill, restoring it to its previous form, full of life and color.

Relief flooded through Sonic and he let out an exhausted sigh. His limbs ached and his head pounded from everything he’d been through; he wanted to collapse, then and there, and take a nice, long nap. However, he still had other things to do; people— friends — to check on.

But when Sonic tried to move, tried to get out of that stupid cave, he found that he could barely take a step. Something was pulling at him, rooting him to the spot.

The Prism. 

Panic coursed through the hedgehog for the umpteenth time and he struggled to get away, much to the distress of his already overworked body. He could feel the Paradox Prism tugging at his mind, his consciousness, and he understood, somehow. It wanted its energy back. The energy that Sonic had absorbed so much of, he practically lived off it. It wanted him.

No, no, no. Not right now. He wanted to— needed to— make sure that everything had worked out. He needed to make sure that they were okay. 

But the prism only tightened its grip. Sonic pushed right back at it, unwilling to give up, even as numbness sank in and he saw his form flicker. Even as he felt the prism tearing at his mind, pulling his consciousness to shreds. He needed to know that they’d come back, even if it was the last thought to run through him. 

Relief came in the form of a black and red hedgehog, who had evidently ran up Temple Mountain in a hurry, a golden trail in his wake. Sonic felt the tension leave him as he stopped fighting the prism and it eagerly unraveled his threads. His form flickered again, horrifying Shadow, who yelled something. It came through to Sonic garbled and incoherent, not that he cared much.

Shadow was alright. His friends would be okay. He’d done it. 

Sonic couldn’t help the smile that graced his face as he flickered one last time, his body remaining translucent. Oblivious to Shadow’s approach, he shut his eyes as darkness took over his mind.

The last thought he had was that it was too bad that he never got to see his friends again.

Tell them I’m sorry, would you, Shadow?

When Shadow had come to, he’d been confused. The vivid colors of the landscape around him assaulted his senses. He’d grown too used to the desaturated ghostly version of home.

He hadn’t been the only one feeling lost, though. Tails, Amy, Knuckles, and Rouge were all collecting themselves, trying to figure out what had happened. The last thing that they remembered was Sonic launching himself at the Paradox Prism. But Shadow knew more than that.

The Prism. Shadow had realized with a start. If he and everything else was back to normal, then Sonic must have fixed it. 

But where was Sonic? He’d assumed that the blue hedgehog would’ve been here already, given his supernatural speed, and be yammering to his friends with that annoyingly chipper voice of his. Unless…

Unless something was wrong. Shadow couldn’t think of another reason Sonic wouldn’t have rushed right back to see his friends. He’d turned to look at the cloud ringed peak of Temple Mountain, worry building in his gut.

Rouge had approached him, saying something that Shadow tuned out. “I think something’s wrong with Sonic,” he’d muttered before firing up his air shoes and speeding towards the place where everything started.

At the top of the mountain, Shadow peered into the cavern. The first thing he laid his eyes on was the Paradox Prism, now complete once more. The next thing… Sonic, standing right next to the giant crystal. 

He looked terrible, nothing like the hyperactive hedgehog he’d come to know. There were bags under his eyes, his quills were unkempt, and his blue fur was no longer as vibrant as Shadow remembered. Pain was etched into his every feature, and he was breathing heavily, seemingly struggling against some invisible force.

But as soon as Sonic laid eyes on Shadow, he relaxed. Then, to Shadow’s horror, his form flickered to translucency, much like his own had before. Suppressed memories came flooding back: a numbing feeling, a splitting headache, panic as he realized what was happening, and acceptance when he found that he was no longer able to escape Ghost Hill. 

Shadow shook it off and called out Sonic’s name as he scrambled to get down to him.

This couldn’t be happening. Could it? 

Shadow stopped just a couple feet in front of Sonic as the latter shifted to ghost completely. A single tear slipped out from beneath blue eyelids and Shadow brushed it away. “Sonic?”

Sonic’s eyes opened, revealing dull emeralds that held no life. He stared at nothing as Shadow took a step back. Then another, and another, until he was pressed against the cave wall. Never did he take his gaze away from the ghost that now stood by the prism. 

No. The prism was fixed. Everything was supposed to be okay. 

Against the short breaths and rapid heartbeat that rang in his ears, Shadow heard the sound of a plane engine. Tails’ voice called, “Sonic?! Shadow?!” It was followed by a series of gasps as the friends were met with the same sight that had greeted Shadow earlier. 

All four of them rushed to Sonic’s side, with Tails being first. Shadow made no move to stop them. Before any of them could say a word, however, as if on cue, Sonic’s form shifted and he spoke the phrase that he would repeat for eternity.

Just two words, yet it hurt Shadow in a way he’d never felt.
