STYX Experiment: Levan

I was in the middle of writing up a different-yet-related theory, before this came to mind! Many thanks to @hanafubukki, your messages fueled the ideas here 👀🫶💖🐦‍⬛

Regarding Levan’s disappearance, I think it’s easy to forget that soldiers repeatedly went missing at the East Fort, aka the fort that Levan was both in charge of and also disappeared as well. While we don’t know the details of where he actually disappeared, I think it’s suspicious that he was headed to the same spot where other Fae soldiers kept disappearing. Lilia was headed over there not only for Levan, but for the other soldiers too.

But why did these soldiers disappear? Why at the Eastern Fort? I admit that I can’t come up with concrete answers, but another line that’s been bothering me ever since Book 6 released, is that Fae don’t respond to the River Lethe the same way humans do.

Idia specifies this when planning to erase the memories of everyone on Sage’s Island, which included Fae like Malleus and Lilia. But apparently, they need different “dosages” adjusted for them regarding their memory. It’s quite fascinating how STYX was able to fine-tune this process, and learned how to keep the very specific and long memories of Fae, while also erasing others.

The time period of the Fae-Human war makes this tricky, but teleportation magic is established here. Book 6 also establishes how in the modern day, STYX can show up to any country, whether they asked for it or not. It’s not entirely impossible that STYX potentially could’ve done research near Briar Valley at some point, especially because there were so many human kingdoms around at the time allied against Briar Valley.

It’s also interesting that we never get a confirmation of Levan dying or not- something that Lilia was able to sense with Meleanor’s magic disappearing. He just simply disappeared, without any traces of his magic for Lilia to track down.

Now that I’ve brought up all these seemingly unrelated points, let’s try and put them together! With all this information, was Levan and his fellow soldiers kidnapped by STYX, or by a human kingdom that was allied with STYX at the time? 🤔

With Levan, I think of Diaval from the Maleficent live action movie. Diaval was a raven captured by a HUMAN hunter, and was forcibly transformed into a human to be saved. Maleficent could also change him into different forms like a wolf or a dragon- all species that he wasn’t meant to be. Essentially like an “experiment.” In the TWST story, with Styx making its sudden appearance that deviated greatly from Hercules, could Diaval’s transformations be referenced in TWST through Levan being an experiment?

If Levan was kidnapped by Styx to be an experiment, it makes sense why Lilia couldn’t find him despite traveling the world. The Isle of Woe is practically untraceable unless you have a rare Unique Magic like Rook does! It’s underwater, so of course people who lack inside knowledge wouldn’t know about it, no matter how much they travel the world.

And if Levan was an experiment, he would be the perfect “candidate” for the River Lethe dosages. Levan was a presumably powerful Fae, as it’s rumored he fought against the Knight of Dawn and survived. It is why Styx and Idia were so confident in using the River Lethe even against a powerful Fae like Malleus- they’ve done it before and so many times that they were able to fine-tune to a near perfect degree.

Styx also shows how they developed technology similar to Riddle’s “Off with Your Head,” and can seal a person’s magic. Perhaps Lilia could no longer trace Levan’s magic because it was sealed off at some point in time when this technology was developed as well 🤔

Fae in general seem like perfect subjects, with their capacity for magic (and thus blot) and their long life spans. Even if the lead researchers of the Shroud family passed away, Fae could technically be subjects for generations. In Idia’s life time, they seem to be rather lax and generally gracious with their subjects compared to how they could’ve been- although the invasions and electrocutions are admittedly quite bad haha. But again, at some point in time in the early stages of Styx development, there must have been unfortunate subjects for Styx to figure out the River Lethe, their magic sealing collars, their blot tools, everything. Throughout human history, scientific progress has repeatedly been made often through the suffering of others.

And at the time of the Fae-Human war, Fae were considered *monsters.* Monsters like Grim or Phantoms- the exactly sort of creatures that Styx had. Even the subject that killed the human Ortho was described as a “monster,” not a Phantom (there’s theories floating around that this monster was Grim 👀). Henrick also brought up his plans to essentially enslave Malleus before he even hatched- to use his dragon form as “his steed.”

So I wouldn’t be surprised that there was a time where Styx shared similar views, and thus kidnapped and conducted experiments on Fae as if they were as “expendable” as monsters 🤔 Even if Styx in the modern day has changed greatly, the damage that previous generations created cannot be undone.

I’d also like to say that Levan was similarly considered to be Meleanor’s “eyes and limbs,” much like how Diaval was Maleficent’s wings. Maleficent’s wings were trapped in a cage, still alive, but trapped. Perhaps the ideas of Diaval being captured by a human hunter and Maleficent’s wings being trapped in a cage were combined for TWST as clues to what happened to Levan? 👀

Tampered memories, blot…ANSJJSZ I have tried my hardest to not bring up Crowley, but I find his relationship with Styx to be fascinating 🫣 But I’ll save that and the details regarding blot for a future post, because I mostly just wanted to talk about the potential backstory for Levan in this one \(//∇//)\ What are your thoughts on what happened to Levan and even the other soldiers who disappeared? 🤔

A Christmas at S.T.Y.X!!

This is a secret Santa gift I did for my friend Angel in a twst discord server! With all the shroud family bein' happy, including Ortho 1.0 who got Star Rouge 2 as his gift Bc dammit they gotta be happy!! It also includes 3 of my OCs, Mel, Fero and Fovos, who are twsted from Meg, Pain and Panic!

I had been watching infected analog horrors and got inspiration for a horror twisted wonderland idea and character. This is a mutated variant of an overblot; one of which is irreversible but is not contagious through exposure or genetics. This mutation develops after experiencing numerous overblots in one’s life. It’s a twisted concept of “if you keep making that face, it’ll freeze that way”. Carline Marten ((Yes, I know I spelled her name wrong in the sketch)) is the first person to experience this mutation and is currently being examined in the S.T.Y.X facility for observation under number 213. I plan to explore and add in more details and ideas for this horror concept.

“Ehh? No more teasing? But your reactions are hilarious!”

Picture Description:

A creature living inside the Ignihyde Dorm. Blaze is a mysterious student with very chaotic tendencies who actively tricks the Ignihyde dorm leader Idia Shroud. She does it simply out of boredom and admits that his reactions make her chuckle.

Blaze’s Backstory/Lore:

Blaze wasn’t born but created by STYX as a sort of sentient weapon for Overblots as well as a detector whenever a breach happens in the facility. From being tested on and going through multiple trial runs, he started to get gradually bored of this tedious routine and as a way to cope he started to prank/tease the STYX staff much to their annoyance. The staff were so annoyed to the point they would immediately throw Blaze in her confinement chamber whenever they were at their wits end. After the onslaught of pranks, STYX staff were thinking of scrapping the whole entire project due to his annoyance. A conversation which Blaze heard through the vents of their room. But, before anyone could go forward with that plan the security in STYX was shut down due to Idia’s hacking. (The same hack that he did during his backstory) Which gave Blaze the opportunity to escape STYX using a Chariot while everyone was taking shelter. But before she left, Blaze heard a sudden roar along with a faint splatter sound. He turned the corner of the dimly lit hallways, only to see a looming monster and young boy screaming with bright flaming blue hair “ORTHO!” before fainting on the ground. After witnessing that event, things started to become fuzzy because all Blaze could remember was leaving STYX while running away from distant footsteps marching down the hall.

Summary: After what happened at STYX, Epel was extremely traumatized and never wanted to part from Vil’s side for as long as possible… he did not want to lose Vil. The sight of seeing Vil all old and wrinkled, brittle and worn by age was enough to send him into panic- he’s seen many elderly in his hometown pass away but the images of elderly Vil fresh in his mind just made everything worse…

Epel Felmier and Vil Schoenheit: Don’t Leave Me All Alone…

Rain pelted the windows of the Pomefiore dorm, thunder rattled the walls and lightning lit the dark hallways and bedrooms that cold February night. It was truly a rough storm and the howling wind whistling a ghostly tune made it no better for Epel as he shuddered under his blankets. The thunder roared again and he clutched his poison apple plush tighter, truthfully, he was not frightened of storms but the events at STYX was enough to send him into panic.

CRASH! BOOM!

The thunder roared again, releasing yet another wave of ferocity. With every roar of thunder came the memories of the titans… of Vil…

‘No… No, Vil is alive, Vil is fine… gotta stop being a scaredy-cat! Man up, Epel! Man up, damnit!’

Nightmares of the horrors that fateful day flooded his mind, images of Vil falling into the Underworld to save Idia still were fresh in his memory, haunting him with the thought of losing Vil. Tears pricked his baby blue eyes as he hid his face in his pillow, oh how he despised this weakness… but he supposed it was only right considering how the event’s traumatized him so dramatically.

CRASH!! BOOM!!

The thunder roared once more, causing Epel to jump slightly at the sound. Sevens above how he hated feeling so weak…

Epel huffed, sitting up in bed and grabbing his pillow and apple plush, making his way quietly out of the room and straight to Vil’s room. He knew Vil was likely already in bed but he just had to see him, he needed to know Vil was alive still. His dreams of Vil all old and wrinkled dying before his eyes shattered his heart into microscopic fragments, the images of the dream were too real for him, it was too much. Outside Vil’s door he could see the dim glow of lamp light from under the door, Vil was likely still awake if the lamp was on. Epel took a deep, shuddering breath and knocked on the door, trying his hardest not to break down like a small child.

“Hm? Epel? Whatever are you doing up at this hour? Eye bags, my dear, eye bag- Epel…? Oh Epel what’s the matter?” Vil knelt down to Epel’s height, brushing his gentle, soft hands across they younger’s face. “Come on in, potato, tell me what’s the matter.”

Epel walked in slowly, nodding his head and sitting next to his Housewarden on the bed, staring at him with wide, frightened eyes. “V-Vil… I-I was just scared you were gone… that you left us for good… that the Underworld took you… *sniffle* I’m sorry… I know this is childish an’ stupid…”

‘Stupid! Damnit! Cryin’ like a lil kid in fronta Vil again… I’m gonna get a scoldin’ of a lifetime for the eyebags…’

Vil gasped, pulling Epel into a tight hug, petting his hair gently, swaying softly in an attempt of comfort. He had no idea Epel was so frightened, he had figured something was wrong when Epel refused to leave his side almost all afternoon during their Friday night cleaning session and this afternoon during lunch break but to see this side of Epel was entirely new. He was nothing more than a frightened little boy who had nearly lost someone he cared about deep down even if he did not want to admit it.

“I’m right here, I’m not going anywhere, just keep your head on my heart, see? It’s still beating, I’m still here, little apple. I’m still here…” Vil whispered soothingly, almost in a motherly manner as his slender fingers combed through the soft, violet locks.

‘No, Vil, you left us behind in my dream… you died… you died from old age too soon…’

“I-I’ve seen buncha old folks b-back home go an’ all but… but seein’ you get old an’ leavin’ us…” Epel could not finish that sentence, the words felt so rough on his tongue. The pain in his heart was excruciating and all he could do was wail into Vil’s chest like a child.

‘Sevens above, please don’t take Vil from us… please…’

Vil gently shushed the crying boy, whispering words of comfort as his tears flowed from his eyes. The feeling was the only calm Epel felt against the raging storm of emotions. The Pomefiore Housewarden knew that Epel always tried his hardest to keep a brave face, a defiant attitude, and a tough guy persona but Vil and Rook knew deep down Epel was a gentle soul who cared deeply for others even if he never showed it openly.

“Epel, how about you spend the night here with me, hm? That way you will know I will not leave you.” Vil smiled softly as the younger looked into his eyes as if questioning his suggestion. “I promise, I will not leave your side, you will be safe in here with me. No storm, titan, or Overblot monster will come in here.”

BOOM! CRASH!!

The first year gasped at the sudden clap of thunder, clinging to his Housewarden as if he were a baby koala. He nodded his head in agreement to Vil’s suggestion, eventually looking up at Vil worriedly before releasing his hold.

“S-sorry… dunno why the stupid storm is making me like this… I’m not usually all a scaredy-cat.”

“It can’t be helped, potato, to be completely honest with you, I too have had a difficult time with the storm…” Vil sighed and shrugged. “Truthfully, it reminds me of what happened at STYX, the titans and all those escaped monsters… and the fear of losing you and Rook.”

‘I-I had no idea Vil felt this way… I thought he was gonna say losing his good looks or somethin’ like that. Huh…’

“What? I know that look, potato- you have something snarky on the mind, spill it.”

“Ack- um- uh… n-no I’m good, Vil! Heh… heh…”

“One… Two… do not make me say three, potato.”

‘Great, he’s gone mama mode… no escapin’ this one…’

“Aight, I was gonna say just thought you were gonna say something ‘bout losing your good looks…”

Vil laughed, genuinely laughed at Epel’s remark. Ruffling his first year’s hair, he pulled him back into a hug. “You cheeky little apple, what am I to do with you?”

“Send me to Savanaclaw, maybe?”

“Not happening. You are staying with me, spudling.”

‘Damnit, guess I’m stuck with Vil- although, guess it ain’t a bad idea… heh- life does work in weird ways, huh?’

“Alright, potato, bedtime. It’s well past both of our bedtimes but sleeping in tomorrow as it is the weekend would not hurt, fufufufu~” Vil lifted the covers for Epel to climb under, like a mother he tucked him in and gently petted his head. Vil too tucked himself into bed and pulled the younger close to his frame, running his gentle, slim fingers through his hair and humming a soft lullaby.

Epel slowly but surely drifted off to sleep, the sweet humming of Vil’s lullaby and his heartbeat that was very much alive soothed his mind and guided him to slumber.

“Gnight… mum…” Epel mumbled sleepily, snuggling closer to Vil like a kitten.

“Goodnight, my littlest apple. May no nightmares touch your dreams tonight while I’m here.”

I have a crazy idea.

Ok so, it’s already been established that curses are a thing in this world. The shroud family has a curse on them that burns blot and causes them to have blue fire like hair and sharp teeth. And Grim has some sort of curse placed on him. My question is, is there a way to reverse a curse? Like undo evil magic that was placed on someone with good magic?

What if that was someone’s signature spell? Purification? Kinda like in contrast to Vil. Whose signature spell is to poison and curse things. Anything they touched that was tainted could be cured or go back to its original state. And if the evil magic is too much for them to turn back completely, then they can at least help someone handle a curse. Or lessen a curse’s effects.

I don’t know if anyone of you watches the owl house, but in it, one of the main characters Eda, has a curse placed on her. She turns into a giant rampaging owl monster. Eventually, after a lot of struggling and pain, she finds a way to make peace with her curse by accepting it as a part of her. And once she does, she becomes her best self. That’s all I’ll say to avoid spoilers since the owl house is amazing and you should watch it.

I also think it would be cool if they could use purification magic to somehow turn the phantoms at Styx back into normal humans. Or merfolk, beastmen, or fae. Whatever they were before they Overbloted and the phantoms consumed them. It made me so sad to think that those rampaging monsters used to be normal people just like the main cast and they had to fight and kill them, watching them dissolve into a black, gooey substance.

Would the shroud brothers want their curse removed? I think it’s pretty useful to not be affected by blot and to instead have your body feed off of it. But that’s just me. How would Vil react if there was someone who could undo his magic? How would any of the boys react? I’m sure you’d have to be a pretty powerful magic user to pull something like that off.

Magic Assault Practice & Styx’s Lachesis System

I’m very suspicious of the Magic Assault Practice event that is directly run by Crowley 👀 In this event, there are these virtual projections for the Magic Assault Practice. The battles are set in a virtual simulation, which Crowley explains it was for practicality reasons, as in last years, this was set in physical locations like reserved/uninhabited islands which caused SO much trouble amongst the students and teachers. Since virtual projections has progressed so far in terms of realism, Crowley reasons this would be the most efficient way for the students to get some training without the hassle. (At least this is what I gathered from translating it myself online andjsjd)

With this system, Crowley makes himself the final boss battle in every map of the event, and says Virtual!Crowley has significantly less magical power than he really has for everyone’s safety. And as I found out from the lovely @floydhat, the virtual projections are adjustable, where the difficultly level can be reconfigured by the real him.

His virtual projections reminds me a lot of Styx’s Lachesis System, used in Book 6 so the students could virtually battle at full capacity without having any real harm sustained in their bodies.

The Lachesis system was already a shock to all the students- even students like Riddle and Azul who have stronger knowledge about these sort of things- especially relating to the school. The Magic Assault Practice event is stated to be a new thing “introduced” by Crowley, that “from now on,” these unique lessons will be set in the virtual setting. Furthermore, the Lachesis system does more than just testing magic in a facility. It combines with the battle simulation to create false yet extremely convincing environments and people. The virtual people can talk with the same voices, the environments look exact- it’s scarily realistic.

In the Magic Assault Practice event, Crowley says virtual projections have improved to the point of being able to recreate forests, underwater scenes, beaches, etc. to the point it’s “no different from the real thing.” It is why the battle maps take place in every single dorm- we don’t actually travel to different dorms. It’s just a projection in there coliseum. And here, much like the Lachesis system, it goes beyond regular VR and more of a practical lesson for the students magic. I assume any damage the students receive is simulated, much like the Lachesis system, but I don’t know for sure yet!

Considering the Magic Assault Practice event says this simulation thing is new, I conclude this equipment gifted from Styx. I sound oddly confident about a theory for once, don’t I? 🤣 But I was look back at book 6 for this theory, and I was blown away by Crowley mentioning that Styx not only covered the repair bills for the damage they caused to the school, but expanded the school’s facilities. Isn’t this a genius potential callback? This would realistically be an incredibly expensive system- Crowley’s stinginess with money or not, a brand new system that’s this high tech would be an unreasonable amount of money just for some student lessons. It all makes sense!

But at the same time, it worries me. Crowley in the event is very specific about saying how the simulation would be just like the “real thing.” I feel like putting all these clues together could lead to a lot of different separate theories here, but…I’m not sure. All I can say is that I feel more confident than ever to Crowley having a direct connection with Styx and the Shroud family 🤔🐦‍⬛ I don’t why, I just have some suspicions on why Crowley was given the high tech virtual simulator in the first place, when we’ve only seen Styx use it to monitor blot levels…is the Magic Assault Practice event for other motives, I wonder?

Also, I got curious of what “Lachesis” meant. There are two meanings to it. The first being that Lachesis is the name of the one of the Three Fates/Moirai, the infamous divine trio in Greek Mythology that control the birth, life, and death of every single person, aka the destiny of everyone. Their symbols are there thread, spindle, and scissors. Clotho first weaved the threads of life, Lachesis measured the threads, (how long a person gets to live), and Atropos cuts the string, ending a person’s life. Depending on the mythological text, Lachesis is also the one who chooses each persons destiny- but in others it’s the job of all three. Interesting! (Edit: sob sob I don’t want to admit it, but Disney’s Hercules has the Three Fates. In the screenshot above, Lachesis is holding the string. Crowley’s mask HELP?! 🤣🤣🤣💀💀💀💀)

But secondly, a Lachesis is a type of snake- a venomous pit viper, to be exact, named after the Lachesis of the Three Fates. This seems irrelevant at first, but notice how prevalent the symbol of the snake is at NRC’s logo and Dark Mirror. I go into a bit more detail in a separate post here about every meanings of this, but isn’t this strange how Styx is getting shockingly more connected to NRC the more we think of it? Crowley essentially having his own Lachesis system…Lachesis measuring threads of fate before they are cut…depending on mythology Lachesis is the one who chooses destiny…

The weaved spindle wheel threads in Book 7’s trailer are cut, which signal the end of life…

What if Yuu Joins Styx?

I’m playing chapter six right now and I had a thought. If Yuu doesn’t find a way home there is a chance that they could end up joining Styx. It’s established that most of Styx’s employees have little to no magic as it reduces the threat posed by blot contamination. Thanks to the overblot students Yuu already has considerable experience dealing with overblots and blot in general. They also have gone to the depths of Tartarus already and survived, while aiding several Styx personnel.

Yuu is also friendly with the Shroud brothers, Ortho more so than Idia. Joining Styx would provide a steady source of income and shelter, and I highly doubt the super secretive organization would care all that much about Yuu’s lack of documentation. Working for Styx could also provide a launching point for the post-overblot arc. Simply have Styx dispatch Yuu to investigate, and voila an easy way to begin whatever plot thread is next.
