heres the ladies today + the first posted pic of what their tank looks like right now.

i bought some millet sprays while shopping and it's one of my bettr investments for them. as you can see ginger, dhal, and clove are going nuts for them.

it isnt the most naturalistic or well defined tank but i think it has more than the normal amount of enrichment.

a fun little fact about diana is that she wears her watch with the face on the inside of her wrist

i just remembered i was gonna like ask you about a bug- 'cus you're like. the bug guy y'know.

i had to pull weeds a day ago and saw this GIGANTIC bug all up in my mom's flowers, it was seriously huge. and it looked like some kind of.. bee/wasp fusion??? super long antenna- my stepdad joked that they looked like antlers- and since it was huge it's body was longer than you'd normally see on a bee, but probably normal for a wasp? i don't think i've ever seen a wasp that large though. and it had the classic black and yellow bee colors?? it also had a stinger i think. a group of them were also chillin' in the grass nearby the first one we saw, so i thought maybe they live underground? -- (this is in the southern/midwest area of the US)

but yeah i was kinda wondering if you knew what this bug was? if not that's okay lol. you can totally delete this ask if you don't wanna answer.

By 'bee/wasp fusion' do you mean it was hairy or more stout than your usual wasp ?

I heard it's Superb Owl Sunday so I have prepared some superb owls for you.

The barn owl is the most widespread species of owl, living on every continent except Antarctica. Their faces are shaped like a disk to help their hearing, giving them some of the best hearing of any owl. They mostly hunt by sound.

Snowy owls are the largest arctic predatory birds, They are born with black feathers and get whiter as they age. Females usually have more dark feathers than males.

Eastern screech owls have a few feather variants that make them look like completely different species.

The southern white-faced owl can increase its metabolic rate during winter to compensate for the cold and lack of food. They lay their eggs in nests built and abandoned by other birds.

The great grey owl is the largest owl by length, but a lot of that is feathers and they're actually very light for their size. Their hearing is good enough to hear rodents burrowing through snow and they can break through hard-packed snow to catch prey.

Blakiston's fish owl is the largest owl by mass and eats mostly fish. Despite the name, they may be more closely related to eagle owls than fish owls.

The elf owl is the smallest owl species, barely larger than a sparrow. They hunt bugs and play dead when caught. They like to live in holes in saguaro cacti.

Burrowing owls live in underground burrows. While they can dig, they mostly take over burrows from other animals. Farmers killing prairie dogs has severely reduced burrowing owl populations. They decorate their burrows with feces to attract bugs to eat.

Okay, so this is really cool! You have this phenomenon where some plants grow edible appendages to their seeds to entice ants to carry them underground where they can safely sprout. And then you have wasps which lay their eggs on the leaves, stems, and other parts of plants and trigger the growth of galls (swellings) which both feed and protect the wasp larvae until they reach maturity.

The boy who was watching the ants noticed they were taking wasp galls underground, too. Further exploration found that the wasp larvae were unharmed inside the galls; the only thing the ants had eaten were edible appendages similar to those on the seeds they collected. The wasp larvae stayed safe inside the ant nest, feeding on their galls, until it was time to emerge and head back out to the surface.

So it turns out that the edible portions of the galls have the same sorts of fatty acids as the edible parts of the seeds. And those fatty acids are also found in dead insects. Scientists think that the wasps evolved a way to make the galls they created mimic the edible portions of the seeds to get the ants to collect the galls. This isn't the only example of wasps making use of ants as caretakers for their young, but it's a really fascinating example thereof--especially if you consider ants evolved from wasps at least 100 million years ago.
