One of the best things about Disco Elysium by far is that it does not fear ugly women. The world is full of ugly men, but ugly women are so hard to come by.
#I'm not calling the characters ugly btw#i don't believe any one can be ugly#i do not care for beauty standards and thus i don't rank people based on how “ugly” or “pretty” they are#but the characters in DE do not meet the conventional beauty standards and look like actual people with unique faces#and thus would be considered “ugly”#and that is so important to me. i go feral whenever media represents how people look like in real life and not how they look like in the#fictional parallel universe where everyone is a model and where a majority of the movies take place#because irl you don't have to be a model to be desirable#the most attractive man in any video game I've ever played has a receding hairline and a big nose and thick glasses and a small chin#and not only is representing realistic people. just good. in general. but it makes the character of Dolores Dei stand out so much more which#works for the game so well. she's barely human. she's a deity- a myth- a legend. the only version that exists of her now is the one with#glowing lungs. she's perfectly beautiful because she's inhuman. the fact that everybody else looks so human only highlights how inhuman she#has become yk?#if everyone was as conventionally attractive as her then she wouldn't stand out. we wouldn't get why she's so special.#disco elysium#disco elysium analysis#media analysis#beauty standards#this is only one aspect of how this game portrays real people btw. as someone interested in character design this just immediately stood out#to me#the first time i noticed it was when i first met garte and the second time was when i met ruby because neither are conventionally desirable#oh my fucking god the nerds who complain about a woman with a model face having body hair in a video game would perish if they played this#mainstream game/movie studios catering to western masses could never

Fire the headcan(n)on: Problems with long-term management of biotic resources for maximum strategic potential in the Alliance military
It is obviously not ideal* for a ship's CO to be running risky ground missions, but the issue demonstrated by Commander Shepard actually brings to light a larger dilemma that's been discussed within the upper echelons of the Alliance military for years. Biotic personnel are a huge asset as front-line troops, and any still able-bodied biotic moving off the front lines is considered a net loss. This poses a potential retention problem, since the usual route for advancement would remove them from where they're considered most valuable.
A trail of internal communications dating back over a decade (recently acquired by Westerlund News) documents how the Alliance instructed recruiters to push biotics to enlist (with exorbitant sign-on bonuses) rather than attend school for a commission.
It's worth noting that when faced with a similar recruitment-and-retention problem for pilots, the Alliance chose to offer commissions, while technically-skilled Specialists can be brought in as officers or warrant officers, depending on their pre-military career and level of education.
Alliance military doctrine suggests preventing a "Shepard Problem" not by restricting a biotic CO to their ship, but by making sure they'll never command a vessel in the first place. If at all possible, biotic personnel should not be given the opportunity to advance to senior command positions until they are physically unable to serve on the front lines.
*Understatement

gotta be honest, after finishing eneis lobby nico olvia is very much amongst the characters i find most interesting thus far. i get that she's a very small character within the grand scheme of things, but everything that is going on with her narratively is beyond fucking compelling. i'd read/watch an entire spin-off about her, like, she is just so intricately fascinating.
here we have a woman who started a family, who clearly loves her daughter wholeheartedly, but who feels called by a sense of responsibility to the truth, to the world, & to her field. she leaves her daughter to what amounts to a cinderella story with added horrors & is haunted by the guilt it spurs to the point where she believes herself to have no right to consider herself robin's mum in any meaningful sense. but she couldn't help but turn around, but want her little girl's forgiveness for all she'd die before thinking she'd earned it. who breaks at her daughter begging for the mum she wanted to but couldn't be. who knows it was wrong to leave as a parent... but also can't say she had any better option.
here we have a woman who pursued knowledge, pursued truth, to the point of criminalization. who's sheer power of belief in the importance of awareness & intellect caused both defection & breach of orders. who chased after the real story of the world in the face of death, who did not cower at the thought of it killing her, because what she was doing was right. it was meaningful. it was important.
here we have the woman who was amongst the inspirations for nico robin to become who she is because, along with other factors, robin understood & believed in the importance of her mum's work even as a very small youth. who, for all she had left her daughter behind, was responsible for a woman who would become (at least to my understading of what's ahead) indespensible to the world's liberation in part due to the example she set. who managed to save her little girl in the end.
yes, she is a small character in the grand scheme of things, but the op world would not be able to be written as we see it without her existence. & i fucking love her.

basically without exception there are 2 kinds of people in hisui in pla. there are the ones who go "hmm you're so strange and suspicious here do this dangerous task that i'm too scared/weak/lazy/whatever to do and MAYBE i'll start to trust you" and then there are the ones who go "wow you're so talented and cool and good at things here surely you'll be able to do this dangerous task for me won't you? since you're so helpful and all?" and that's why protagonist just never catches a fucking break

Nazis and Holocaust Exceptionalism
Re: this very good post but I didn’t want to derail it so I made my own post instead.
I’m trying to find a way to articulate this more fluently but at its bare bones I guess what I’m thinking is that, especially in USAmerican culture, the Holocaust and Nazis are exceptional examples of genocide. As in, they’re uniquely horrible* and the most horrible. And that makes comparisons to the Holocaust and Nazis an exercise in dehumanization instead of an exercise of political and social analysis.
(*per the original post ALL genocides are uniquely horrible and tragic)
That exceptionalism - that the Nazis were THE worst people in history, the genocide of the Jewish people was THE worst genocide to ever occur - dehumanizes both the Nazis and the Jews. And that’s a dangerous precedent to set.
For one, treating Nazis (and by extension Neo-Nazis today) as these inhuman, incomprehensible monsters distances them from the human reality that made them. It erases the centuries of antisemitism and xenophobia in Europe, the economic factors leveraged to enhance and inflame those deep rooted biases. It hides how white nationalists today take advantage of socially isolated and inherently biased young men. Which makes it easy to think you could never do something so horrible, so monstrous - you’re not a monster like them, after all. When in reality you too are a person with biases and social frustrations that can be leveraged by others for personal gain.
Additionally, this exceptionalism dehumanizes the Jewish people, in a very different but still awful way. They’re given this air of mysticism, rarity and supernatural strength. How amazing that they survived at all - how high the pedestal for a people who were nearly destroyed but endured in spite of it all. I recognize a similar pattern in the treatment of indigenous peoples in the US - their morality is inherently superior because of the horrors they survived, their religion is ‘more pure’ for having survived, but they’re also held to a much higher standard than others because of this. They’re both inhumanly perfect and destined to be torn down from that pedestal at the first sign of humanity.
I’m sure there’s better articulated essays on the above phenomenon but for the sake of this argument I think the above is sufficient. Because in USAmerican culture the Holocaust and Nazis are exceptional - not just unique. Which makes comparisons between genocides reduce the humanity of all parties involved by drawing a line from Nazis to modern actors, from the Jewish people of the Holocaust to modern victims.
It’s not that comparison should be discouraged - there are facets of similarity worth exploring in disenfranchisement, dehumanization, and how social and political anxieties are warped to indefensible atrocities in the name of those fears. And it’s only natural for USAmericans to first think of the Holocaust given the strong association between genocide as a concept and the Holocaust in the public mind - but the space the Holocaust occupies in the public consciousness is so deeply dehumanized and mysticized that those comparisons are used as shortcuts to ‘x is a monster acting in its evil nature and y is an innocent lamb incapable of acting for itself’ instead of as constructive analysis of how historic biases and modern fears are used by political forces to achieve economic and social goals, however heinous those may be.
*I’m not a historian or philosopher, nor do I profess any professional study of the topics here. I study trees and bugs for a living. I’m happy to engage in productive conversation regarding these topics. I will block you if you’re an asshole though.

Here's my first, VERY rushed, sketch of Kadatchi!
Tumblr media
I'm imagining they take after mostly Kaon, though their later frame upgrades take some after Tarn's current design (but I'm imagining there's still elements of his original one, thus the orange)
Yes I gave them a little raccoon mask because why not?
Their altmode is currently undecided, as may be obvious, though I want to work their inherited coils into it without making them an outright torture device like their various parents are (while Kadatchi is genetically only related to Kaon and Tarn, they consider the entire DJD as their family)
I've decided on they/them pronouns for Kadatchi, but I see them as vaguely identifying more as generally masc nonbinary

hey wait i have a question..... if Jetpack Joyride certainly does take place in Australia, why are literally none of the other main/side characters Australian or Australian sounding??? why is Barry (and also Robo-Barry) the only one who has a noticeable audible Australian accent and presumably grew up with white-boy Aussie culture???? like, Craig sounds American, his buddy Steve sounds American (as do literally all the other scientists), Brains sounds American, literally none of the other characters from Really Bad Corp are Australian (which makes sense considering most of them are beasts or aliens), they gave Betty an American accent in the "Will Barry Steakfries Survive?" trailer thingy which is just??? huh?????? i thought she was?????? also Australian???????????????
we(to be fair, Betty does mention in the Thanksgiving JJ2 Event that many things are opposite in her universe, which may also include her nationality. still though, the amount of America in this game that takes place in Australia is perplexing to me. like. where are all the other Australians what happened to them where are they)

Cut for Moira MacTaggert rant, no one needs to see this.
"What about when Moira imprisoned her son? Huh? Huh? She was always awful!"
At the time, that was an act of desperation. And the purely pragmatic alternative would have been to run a chunk of iron through the brain of his current host to prevent him from killing anyone else. Was it right? No. It was awful. But it didn't make her a villain. Back then, before the retcon, it was her trying to save her son who was a murderous parasite the only way she thought she could.
Plus, I consider that the beginning of a progressively worse portrayal of the character, so I can award no points for that, anyway. It was problematic, but came from the same general time period as things like the Avengers wishing Carol Danvers well as she was whisked away by her r*pist. (That she even works with the Avengers at all shows that they've swept that under the rug, they should really have done the same for Moira in my opinion if they weren't going to outright retcon it). That people understandably view it as her being an abusive mother doesn't let the writers that decided that for her off the hook.
"What about her brainwashing Magnus?"
Yeah, definitely on solid ground with that one. "Let's portray Moira as brainwashing a Holocaust survival" was not a good look on the writers if they were trying to keep her vaguely sympathetic, and it's pretty clear they were. But it was still an act of desperation as opposed to murdering a baby she was afraid of or attempting to commit genocide.
Or changing an abuse survivor retroactively into the Abuser, Actually. Again, I put that on the writers.
If you think I didn't complain about those both at the time, you have another think coming. I haven't been comfortable with the direction the writers decided to take Moira in for a very long time, Moira X is just an awful culmination of those events. I think the whole thing was a terrible wast, horribly contrived, and that they should have just left her, with all her faults and crimes, dead rather than quadruple down on them.
Magnus has attempted to commit genocide and is a mass murderer, but he's generally presented as a hero now. Apocalypse and Sinister are both eugenicists and just generally terrible people. Charles has often not acquitted himself well, though the worst of it it looks like they've lightly retconned or tried to have him make up for. Don't get me started with Hank. But I'm supposed to think that Moira is just the worst of the worst? Come on.
Standard disclaimer: Yes, I get that those events in the past did her no favors, but the way they've geometrically doubled down over the last few years leaves even more of a bad taste in my mouth.
