"just miss your voice"
...
mattheo’s dad had always been supportive of mattheo, no matter what. high grade on his homework, congrats! he just manages to pass? congrats! he was supportive, no matter the result, he’d always made sure to make mattheo feel loved, feel worth it. but no matter how supportive his dad was, mattheo could feel it, the mixed feelings when he decided to move to korea to become an idol. there was a smile on mattheo’s dad lips when he told him of his plans, there was always a smile on his dad’s lips, but that one felt different, and mattheo couldn’t quite figure out why. it’d for a long while been just them, mattheo didn’t have many friends, and no best friends, and the same for his dad, they were dependent on each other. mattheo wondered, when he left for korea, would his dad feel more lonely, or would he finally have time to go out and make friends?
they called often, of course they did, they were still each other’s best friends, and would continue to be forever. it was difficult finding time for it, mostly because of the different timezones, but the two always managed to make time for it.
it rings, mattheo is the one to call, unannounced today, but he misses his dad, doesn’t have time to agree upon a time, if his dad doesn't answer, they can find a time, but for now, he just hopes his dad has time though it’s not planned.
“mattheo!” there’s a smile on his dad’s lips, it’s a facetime, mattheo prefers regular calls, but his dad says he misses his face too much for regular calls, so it always ends up being facetime. “you called unannounced, did anything good happen?” mattheo has a habit of calling unannounced whenever he’s very happy or excited about something, but he shakes his head “nothing particularly good, i just missed you. i applied to a bunch of companies again, still didn’t make it though”. “awe, i’m sorry to hear that, but i know you’ll get there, before i know it, i’ll have a world famous son!” “kpop still isn’t that popular, i’ll have to become the next bts or twice for that to happen” “you’ll become bigger than that!” “you’re setting too high expectations dad, i have to become a trainee first y’know! i will say though, grandma says i look less awkward when i sing, i think i’ve finally figured out that presence thing you talked about!” “and dance?” “still not the best, but i’ll get there, i’m sure i will!”. “can i hear about your day, dad?”.
“well, i’m still a teacher, like always, i was a substitute for an english class today, i should’ve had you with me now that you teach english!” “not sure if that would’ve helped, i teach like six years old, you’re a high school teacher!” “ah you might be right, but you’ve been an english teacher so long, i think you’ve become better at me”. “i’ve spoken english since birth, so would make sense i’m better than you at english, just like you’re better than me at korean”, “don’t think that’ll hold long though, i used to speak only korean with you, and now when we chat we speak english” “ah but i just miss speaking english!” “i know, i know, and i don’t mind speaking english, but my korean is becoming rusty i think”, “call grandma, she only speaks korean” “and has grandma learned how to call yet?” “not unless i’m with her…” “exactly!” and a laugh escapes both of their lips.
“do you have time for a long call today?” his dad asks, “you can talk for a while? usually when i call out of nowhere you don’t have time”, “i’m ordering food today, thought i could send you money and you order food too, and then we talk while eating takeout, how does that sound?”, “i’m an adult and live in another continent and yet you manage to continue spoiling me”, “you deserve it”, and so, the talk continues for a while.

an untuned 𝓿𝓲𝓸𝓵𝓲𝓷 ༄.°
Tumblr media
though the departed have long since transcended to a realm that is beyond mortal reach, traces of their existence continue to remain left behind like the feathers of a snow-winged goose that has taken flight. aside from his vision—its rekindled permanence forever a stark reminder of the burden that must be carried—amélie also harbors another relic of ███ and unlike the former, its presence harbors much more fond memories from a simpler time.
when she was still a child, on his fifteenth birthday, the boy had urgently roused her from sleep in the dead of night, showing her two tickets for a performance happening in the opera epiclese that very day. hesitant to leave the comforts of her bed, the boy’s enthusiasm—which had been a rare sight in regards to his otherwise stoic demeanor—was difficult to ward off. and so, in silent acquiescence, amélie would accompany ███ to the court of fontaine, lending an ear to his passionate musings, which was an uncommon indulgence for him before arriving at their destination.
the opera house felt larger than life itself back then; regal halls decorated with oil paintings gilded in gold, polished marble floors, and chandeliers that dangled high from the ceiling, sparkling in their opulence. amélie won’t forget how out of place she had felt the entire time, especially once they had taken their seats on those velvet chairs that felt as though they were made to sit royalty. but as the lights dimmed and a ballerina, alongside her violinist took to the stage—accompanied by a fellow orchestra—amélie was no longer just a little girl sitting in the theater.
following that night, ███ had insisted they learn the piece, with the hopes of one day getting to perform it for themselves. he would play the violin and she would play the role of the ballerina. they would practice for countless hours along the shorelines of petrichor playing until either his fingers grew calloused or her legs became too sore to move. in the end.. they never would get to play that piece together and their only audience had ever been the pale moon above.
years later, amélie now returns to that spot on the shorelines, unaccompanied and with a violin in hand—his violin. it has remained untouched for quite some time now, strings taut from a lack of attunement and the hollowness from within more apparent than when he had held it. but here on this familiar stage, where the waves slowly fall in and out of the tide and the moon offers its faint gaze upon her just as it did all those years ago, the lonely ballerina takes hold of the violin once more.
“to you my friend. may the stars of this sky guide you on into the afterlife, and may you find peace in a world much kinder than this one.”

Kover It Up Vol. 7 - When You Wish Upon a Star
In order to prevent this one from drifting too far in the direction of warm marshmallows garnished with icing and colorful sprinkles, I try to cushion the blow with the necessary healthy pinch of bitter substances. If only for the sake of physical health and mental stability.
The question that could now be asked, not entirely unjustifiably, is how many dreams come true this world is still capable of enduring? And we are, after all, talking in this case about pop culture of 1978, still situated somewhere between innocence, ignorance, and megalomania.
To try and personalize the whole thing a little, what better opportunity than possibly the solo album of the blood-spitting, fire-breathing, anal sex propagating bassist of the world's loudest and most colourful rock band to date at the first zenith of their unprecedentedly media-effective career? And what do you find there? A cover version directly from the Pinocchio soundtrack When You Wish Upon a Star (1940), Disney's very own Rock and Roll All Nite (1975).
How can you interpret something like that? As an eternal fan of Great Expectations (1976) I'm hardly surprised and simply see one of the probably most formative musical but also ideological impulses in the life of this demon, which he is prepared to reveal for the first time with the necessary self-confidence in all its nakedness, with bravura (1).
But is this really a deep psychological look through the eyes of an innocent little child's soul freshly arrived in the new world, or is it just a capitalist fever dream come true that has its roots in the materialism of this modern consumer culture? The boundaries here seem to blur like the good and less good elements on Music from The Elder (1981).
And well, at least Gene didn't do the same as his all-time idols The Beatles and call himself bigger than Jesus, in this case, bigger than Disney, but rather equated himself with him and thus inserted himself in the middle of his illustrious colorful world, surrounded by Pinocchio, Bambi, Dumbo and a multitude of talking small animals and insects. And that would certainly be megalomaniac enough, Gene in the midst of his self-chosen natural environment.
And one more time, I'd like to see anyone else do that! But I'll tell you something, the more often I say this sentence, the more uncertain I become as to whether it can really mean anything good.
What does it matter if I still like Gene's version of When You Wish Upon a Star much better?
Side Note:
(1) Not least thanks to Sean Delaney's unerring instinct not to repeat the vocal recording in which Gene's voice breaks at the end and is close to tears.
If you missed the first six episodes, no problem, they are all within easy reach: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5 and Part 6.

Hi!! Can I please request a romantic matchup for Mystery Incorporated, OUAT, and Star Wars? (sorry if that's a lot!)
I'm pretty average when it comes to things like height and weight, I have curly honey brown hair and brown eyes. I have so many freckles and I wear glasses cause I'm super blind.
My sense of style is all over the place when it comes to everything. My room is an eclectic mess of old car parts, huge bookshelves stuffed to the brim with books, antiques that I've collected, random paintings I've done, and I think the rest of my style is very similar. I find a way to make a cute outfit out of anything.
I'm asexual and biromantic. I love artsy things like cosplaying, crafting, and painting, and I love to sing and dance. I'm extroverted but still quite shy. I love music, recently I've been into kpop. I'm really sensitive when it comes to tv, I cry over every movie.
I am a very caring person, although I have a tendency to like being babied, as I am the youngest of my friends. I am also really clingy and I have a lot of love to give. One of my favorite ways to show love is acts of service, I love helping bandage people up if they are hurt, or cooking them a meal. I'm also big on pda and physical touch.
I think that's all I got! anyways thank you so much!!
Hi! Thank you for requesting a matchup, and don't worry, the amount is fine! :) I hope you enjoy! <333333

Mystery Incorporated;
Shaggy Rogers:
Tumblr media
🥪 You met Shaggy when you called them for help, there was a ghost of some kind in your closet, now you didn't mean to make the like the Ghostbusters, but you had no idea who else to call; and you did not regret it after you saw him... Shaggy
🥪 You were a bit shy when you first spoke to him... And his dog... But you quickly warmed up to him, finding that he loves to eat and boogie down; you loved to dance too, so that's one thing you had in common!
🥪 After the ghost, who had actually been your grandmother pulling a prank, got caught, Shaggy asked you out and you said yes; Shaggy then got your number and later that weekend took you out to a nice fast food place and then you both went walking around a park before he heard an ice cream truck, (sadly though, his dog, Scooby, was being a third wheel)
🥪 Though, you both really liked each other, and it got to the point that Shaggy went on dates without Scooby, and you both had a really great time each time; and soon enough Fred, Velma, and Daphne were begging you both to stop kissing when you joined them for a ghost hunt
🥪 Shaggy thinks you're like totally awesome dude :) He's like totally in love with you too (He'd make you so many sandwiches)

OUAT;
Jefferson:
Tumblr media
🎩 You met Jefferson when you were living in storybrooke, now he couldn't stay inside that mansion he lived in forever, so when he had to go out for food and literally ran into you, he was glad that he did; love at first sight?
🎩 Being the little devious boy he is, he apologises and insists that you come with him to him home where he could get you some tea; you decided, 'why the hell not' and went with him, feeling an odd sense of trust and peace with him
🎩 One thing led to another, and you moved in three months later, Jefferson was the sweetest gentleman, always making sure you are alright and feel loved; you absolutely adore him, half the reason why you began dating him, he's gorgeous, and you love to repay his kindness, love, and generosity with little acts of service
🎩 Somehow along in what seemed like a fairytale, you helped Jefferson get his daughter back, and he would be forever grateful for your help; you became a cute, little family - you loved cooking up food to go off into the woods and have picnics with them
🎩 Jefferson totally believes that it was love at first sight, and you feel the same, with every lingering glance, cuddles in large beds, and going out of sweet dates, you both were head over heels; you'd do anything for each other
---
Star Wars;
Han Solo:
Tumblr media
🔫 You met Han when you went with your Uncle Ben and new friend Luke to make a deal with the man and his Wookie friend; you three needed to get out off the planet and your Uncle Ben made a deal with Han
🔫 You on the other-hand, should have been listening to the conversation, but all you could see was Han; oh boy, oh boy
🔫 Han was sort of thinking the same, well, he thought you were mighty attractive, he loved the way you smiled, and the way your eyes shimmered when something interesting peaked your interests
🔫 You didn't start dating/courting until after the end of Darth Vader, dancing about in celebration, Han took his moment to pull you into a shared dance where you then shared your first kiss under the many stars
🔫 Han can't get over you, and misses you when you're gone, even if you are in another part of the ship, like yourself, he always wants your touch, either holding your hand, your hand on his arm, sitting shoulder to shoulder... In short, he's whipped; you felt the same, needing him always near you, and you always found it endearing when you'd come back into the cockpit and turn Han's pout into a grin

Hey, so, I made up a term and wrote a whole thing. Hope you enjoy.
Inspired by the concept of liminal spaces, liminal space characters are narratively stuck, their subjectivity seemed rendered inert. They are resistant to transiting to the next phase, on the brink of possible transformation if only they could figure out the how of transforming. However, this arrested character growth is designed by skillful hands to be temporary, and the resulting arc of change is heightened by that seemingly fixed–and problematically so–starting place.
An inherent trope among these characters is a bridging multiple worlds, identities, or contexts. They inhabit an “in-between,” a space of discomfort, uncertainty, waiting, and denial (relating to the personal, the public, or reality itself). Narratively, there might be an impending change on their horizon that they work to avoid, sacrificing pieces of their own ethical system to reach that aim. They might be running from their past actions, straddling multiple spheres of existence, or haunted by what they’ve done but unable to face the consequences. Others might be so committed to completing a task bestowed upon them they barely assess whether they are capable of even doing so. In worse emotional places are those characters who complete the task set before them, only to realize it was a horrible mistake.
At the root is their relationship to subjectivity. Who directed their understanding of self? When did that occur? Was it purposefully manipulative or purely environmental? To move through the liminal space, they must define their own subjectivity, and take control of their own identities after being buffeted by expectation, lineage, or limited opportunities.
One of the most persuasive liminal space characters of the last ten years is Ben Solo, or Kylo Ren, in the Star Wars universe. He is born under incredibly traumatic circumstances, his lineage being a splinter of the light side and the dark. Impossibly high expectations are thrust upon him before he enters the world, so too is a sinister invasion intended to corrupt him in the womb. He is purposefully kept ignorant of his grandfather’s actions, deprived of an opportunity to come to terms with the damage wrought those decades prior. Ben’s parents don’t quite notice how calculating the dark side is, or avoid doing anything about this understanding, until they send him to his uncle’s Jedi Temple. Even under his Master-level uncle’s observation, Ben struggles to integrate everything that is seemingly at odds inside him; the pull to the light, the pressure of the dark. Consequently, he is left in a state of fractured identity, split between what is acceptable and unacceptable, unable to find his place in a galaxy ruled by strict binaries. This tension boils to the surface as rage, violence, hopelessness, and subservience to those he turns after his family members fail him.
Another excellent example is Spock in the Star Trek universe. He is born half human, half Vulcan, a duality that leads to lifelong struggles not only within himself, but in the galaxy, as well. While he must suppress his emotions through training and social expectation, his internal system of rationality is encouraged during his childhood on Vulcan. Despite his father’s choice to partner with a human woman, Sarek seems to resent Spock’s individuality. In Vulcan schools, Spock is bullied by his peers for that part of his identity of which he has no control. In a more recent iteration of Star Trek, it is revealed that Spock also has a form of dyslexia, setting him further apart from those he might otherwise find a connection with. He is a unique individual, someone whose adversities aren’t recognized by those he encounters–let alone seen and validated–and so he is left to find a balance within himself with little support. His world is also one of defined boundaries, clear parameters for acceptable behaviors. This path isn’t easy for him, especially when he seeks to relate to those he finds himself drawn to, or forced to spend time with. Depending on the era of Star Trek, he deflects the advances of those around him, or falls under the influence of an alien biologic, for example, wherein he is allowed to express emotions, and later confesses that being under the pollen’s influence was the only time he felt happy.
Both these examples share a commonality: they are pushed a certain direction in response to family obligation, social expectation, or environmental constraints. This can even go as far as childhood abuse or neglect that carries on through their lives. From the clay of their childhood experiences, the liminal space characters are taught it doesn’t matter what they want for themselves; they must accept and perform an identity according to what people around them dictate as acceptable. For Ben Solo, it is dutiful Padawan to his own detriment, while as Kylo Ren, he is a conflicted tool used by those he bows to. Spock defaults to appearing as a distanced and capable science officer, hiding any internal tumult he may experience. Both have suffered for their struggles and crave relief.
For some, there is a distinct lack of agency often assigned, something that happened at the start of their journey that was entirely out of their control. Ji-Ah, a liminal space creature from Lovecraft Country, is possessed by a spirit that wreaks havoc on those she encounters. She did not consent to the spirit’s arrival–her mother invited it in for reasons all her own–and the human Ji-Ah loses her identity in the process. What is intriguing about this arc is how the spirit is the one to change, not the negated human within. That person was lost, replaced by a spirit who transforms for the better.
San, from Princess Mononoke, was abandoned by her parents in the forest. She was discovered by the Wolf Clan, whose leader Moro takes the human child in as her own to raise entirely as if she were a wolf. As San grows up with deep hatred of humans, she must confront the truth of her existence; that she comes from them, was abandoned by them, and now commits her life to stopping their destruction of the natural world. Her transition through the liminal looks similar to her starting place, living as a wolf, yet her internal conflict finds resolution through connecting with a human man she can trust.
To achieve their goals (which are usually not intrinsically motivated but outwardly so), they may suppress their innate tendencies. These often include compassion, empathy, tenderness, or caretaking. This leads to immense conflict, both externally as they aim to reach certain objectives, or internally as they combat or try to eliminate this intense intrinsic struggle. This conflict may cause violent behaviors, mental instability, or emotional chaos. When these characters are coded as “villains,” they often cause intense harm to others and themselves. They do this usually out of desperation to survive, to fit in, or perhaps to avoid perceived judgement. Depending on the narrative, they are given an opportunity to make amends for this harm. But usually in western media, they are not redeemed, let alone offered the chance to atone for the damage they inflicted while they struggled to actualize as their true selves.
The heroic versions, of which the Star Trek universe has many, benefit from extra layers of character depth, which offers an arc that builds effectively over several seasons. Whether it is an android who observes humans around himself and wishes to emulate their mannerisms, or a previous human-machine hybrid forced to sever herself from the greater machine organism, these characters depend on the external to define their identities. It takes much longer for them to find that truth within themselves.
Other characters fall into a middle ground between villain and hero coding. One such example is Ed Teach, or Blackbeard, in Our Flag Means Death. He inhabits the world as a fulfillment of his own stereotypes and exaggerations. He claims to care about little and presents a bravado to match the fearsome illustrations in history books. But eventually we see his immense dissatisfaction with the role he has been performing. His liminal space, similar to the rest, is that of moving away from this project front toward authenticity.
Joel Miller, a character originated in the Last of us video game and portrayed in a streaming show of the same name, begins as a regular man. He has a daughter, a brother, a job. It is only because of horrifying circumstances that he is forced to transform. He makes himself cold, violent, and ruthless. There can be no remainder of his previous self. Until he encounters someone to protect, and protect, he does, much to his own aggravation. His circumstances are some of the most dramatic across narratives, and how he integrates, or fails to integrate, his warring selves has fascinated audiences for over a decade.
Neither of these previous two examples have conclusions in their streaming narratives at this point. Both are left on the cliffhanger of violence, of rejection of social expectation around them. Both revert to a previous state of being, but in different ways: Ed to his Blackbeard persona, Joel to his protective father role. Whatever results from these decisions (however conscious or reactionary they are), is inconsequential. And therefore, potentially read as villainous once more, buckling under the pain of the past and fear of that suffering’s return.
The character Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer willingly suffers for his previous actions. Over time, he begins to recognize what he has done, takes action to make amends, and fights for his redemption. Though by the closure of the show he is deprived of what he most craves–connection–his final actions are entirely the opposite of his original ones. He countered the vampire tendencies within himself, found wholeness, and dedicated himself to a goal that was selfless.
As Spike was for some time, these characters can be confused about where they belong and crave that understanding and connection. There is a deep ache to be understood, though few of them acknowledge this desire. In fact, many go out of their way to deny it, to pretend otherwise.
The character of Nimona, originating in the graphic novel of the same name, traverses the murky landscape of being a shape shifter. She camouflages her deep interest in finding a companion by presenting herself as a “sidekick,” someone for the villain mastermind to rely on and trust. She is uncertain of herself, carrying the wounds of centuries past, convincing herself that violence and domination are paramount. When she bonds with her new friend in unexpected ways, her deeper needs rise to the surface. But these are frightening. It is only when she is shown radical acceptance and safety does she integrate her various parts at the end of the story.
Killian Jones in Once Upon a Time jostles between presenting his desires in a joking manner, and hiding them beneath layers of anger. He is bound by revenge and denies anything in conflict with that goal. His swagger is an exaggeration, a front or projection, which is a common detail across these stories. If he claims to be a heartless villain, no one will discover just how victimized he once was.
These characters may herald chaos or drama within the narrative, amusement or disquiet for the audience. A character like Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series is written from the outset as a direct–if youthful–antagonist. Yet later in the story, insight into his wounded mental and emotional state arrives, eliciting the reader’s compassion. He was inculcated in an environment of bigotry and toxic superiority, of which he must decide personally to move beyond.
Liminal space characters can appear unique in their behaviors and presentations when compared to those around them. Perhaps this is because of a heightened defensiveness, or anxiety, or refusal to engage with typical romantic situations.
For those who are deliberately off-putting and aggressive, sarcastic and aloof, or extremely isolated by design, the audience must confront their own biases, as well. When the narrative is effective, we as consumers may empathize with these struggling individuals. We may understand why they have taken the steps they have, protected themselves, lashed out at others.
What I love most about liminal space characters is the potential for them to heal the dueling perspectives within themselves. These characters at some point must question themselves, and when done successfully, the audience does the same: How capable are we of forming our sense of self? What does harm look like? How do we live with our mistakes? How do we shape ourselves? Is it possible to make a new choice after a long pattern of harmful behaviors? Where does this character go after discovering they have wronged so many? When is that redemptive effort enough?
Both the characters questioning themselves, and not questioning themselves (ie following external demands), may lead to feelings of loneliness and rejection. Prince Zuko of Avatar the Last Airbender rotates entirely around his father’s acceptance, and whatever he must do in order to receive it, he will. There is no cost too high, and he questions nothing. Until he stumbles into a bond with a supposed adversary, which begins to shift his perspective. This is a common trope within these stories, as well, the mirror opposite coming into sharp relief by comparison.
Frustratingly, there are far more male-presenting liminal space characters than female ones in the duality of Western media, so the “adversary” is often portrayed as female (I’m optimistic this will change as more diverse writers share their stories). In a compulsory heterosexual context, there is potential for romance, as well. This is perceived in the canon text and also by fans through their own stories. An opposing character–such as Kitara in Avatar the Last Airbender, Rey in the last Star Wars trilogy, or Captain Kirk in Star Trek–may help these liminal space characters realize they are not a lost soul, no longer a victim to their circumstances. They can offer an opposing viewpoint: what if you took a different path? You’re not required to stay this way. It’s never too late.
Hope gives the liminal space characters the sense they can make new choices and change. Hope is the kernel, the light slanting through clouds, the assurance nothing is permanent, not even a limbo state of the mind.

rollin'
"and here we go again, and here we'll go again"
...
skills chosen: singing, dance song chosen: 'rollin'' by brave girls
this wasn’t mattheo’s first time auditioning for sr media, but he’d auditioned everywhere now, gotten rejected from everywhere now. but he wouldn’t give up, he’d been here for two years, still not having able to join any company, and he was aware, even when the day one day came, that he’d become a trainee, there was still far way into becoming an idol. but mattheo had taken the first step, he’d come to korea to chase his dream, and now all he needed to do was continue, to improve, to show people he was worthy of achieving his dream. mattheo had put in much consideration as to what he’d showcase for this audition. he wasn’t the best singer, but it was what he loved most and was most skilled in, of course he’d showcase singing, but he considered, should he show anything more?
there had been spent much time and consideration into what he’d perform, he was aware, did the filming not go well, he could do it over again, this wasn’t a live audition, which meant this was his fourth time recording, perhaps four is his lucky number?
he presses record once again, quickly backs up and quickly gives a bow to the camera. “hello, i am choi mattheo, my korean name is choi dal, i am currently twenty-one years old, today i’ll be singing and dancing ‘rollin’ by brave girls, thank you for being willing to watch my performance”. he’s quickly out of the camera, quickly in front of it again, taking position, and then it begins. the not too difficult dance, a song who shows off singing skills, mattheo feels comfortable about this tape. he continues dancing, he continues singing, and it’s over quicklier than the earlier tapes (or so it feels like).
“thank you very much for being willing to watch my performance, again, this is choi mattheo”.

Summary: As Kylo sleeps he finds himself mysteriously transported to your modern world, while you sleep you find yourself following alongside Kylo as he goes about his duties as “supreme leader?” who even was this guy? And why does he keep talking about ‘The Force?'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You know how in life there are those days that make you want to squeeze lemon juice directly into a fresh cut just to feel something? Well, you were having one of those days.
You’d just been laid off from your job and to make matters worse you locked your keys in your car while you were packing away your desk essentials. It would take the mechanic two hours to arrive so you could either sit there looking pathetic in the parking lot of the job you just got fired from or you could take a walk.
Yeah, you weren’t going to humiliate yourself with that first option, especially not after all your coworkers avoided eye contact with you as you packed up your belongings.
Running your hands through your hair, you sighed in frustration, looking up at the cloudy gray abyss above you. Well at least the weather matched your mood, you just hoped it would hold off on raining until after you were back home. Maybe then you could cuddle up with your cat and a good book and forget today ever happened.
Walking in the opposite direction as your old office building, you turn around to glare at it in all its boring corporate glory.
“Good riddance” you mutter under your breath as you shove your hands in your pockets and let the sidewalk lead you to something that would hopefully brighten your day.
You’d never really gotten to explore the area around your work aside from the coffee and bagel shop you’d frequent for breakfast and the deli two buildings down where you’d get lunch. You’d miss the sandwiches at that deli but there was no way you would go back there and risk running into your coworkers. It was only noon and today was already one of the worst of your adult life experiences.
It wasn’t like you particularly liked that job, you yearned for a creativity that would never be found behind a wooden desk in a cubicle. Still, you’d made a few accomplices and had started growing used to your routine.
You didn't know if it was bad luck or the universe telling you to finally do something more adventurous with your life but either way, you’d need to find a new job soon.
So lost in thought, you don’t even realize where you are until you stumble over a stray tree root. Only then do you notice the gorgeous park you’re in. It’s roughly the size of a large backyard but it’s filled with so many plants and tall trees that you could nearly forget you were in the middle of a city if the honking of traffic didn’t give it away.
Flowers of every color blossom all along the brick pathway and all sorts of pollinators flitter around the garden. It’s a wonder they can find their way to this place through all the buildings and construction around but if you lived here you’d probably never leave it anyway.
It would feel like a segment pulled straight out of a forest if it weren’t for the fountain in the middle of it all. It’s a beautiful circle made out of white marble with a woman in the center holding some sort of pot where the water is flowing from.
It’s nothing but a simple statue but something about the woman's eyes is warm and motherly, whoever carved them must have spent a lot of time on them to get them to feel so inviting. They don’t look directly at you, however, they focus just to the right of where you're standing and you follow the line of sight till you notice something in the bushes.
Curious as to what could be so important that they’d face the statue towards it, you move to investigate the mysterious object and are pointedly surprised to find a coin machine buried amongst the leaves and vines. It reads:
“Wish coins. Hold the coin in your hands and make a wish then toss it into the fountain. The Universe is kind to those with pure intentions. Only one per person!”
From the looks of it, no one’s used it in a long time and it makes you sad that humanity has seemingly given up on simple things like making a wish in a fountain. You remember doing it once or twice as a kid, although your wishes never came true- it was probably for the best that you didn’t receive 15 puppies and all the toys in the world at age 8.
It only costs a penny to get a coin from the machine so after a few minutes of digging through all your pants pockets you manage to scrounge up one dirty penny made in 2003 from your back pocket. You insert it and twist until your ‘wish coin’ comes out with a clank.
It’s bigger than a dollar coin and looks like something you’d get at an arcade or gaming festival. It’s got a star on both sides instead of anything remotely similar to real currency but it holds the weight of real metal and looks entirely made of copper. Even if you don’t throw it in it’s a pretty cute trinket to have found.
Checking your watch, you see that you still have an hour until the mechanics can get to your car so you walk over and take a seat on the fountain, admiring the greenery, you think about how you probably never would have found this place if all of the bad stuff didn’t happen. Although you didn't know if this surpassed the loss of your job you were grateful to have found such a beautiful place to rest and wait.
Taking a deep breath in, you flip the coin in your palm over a few times, staring at it in consideration. It couldn’t hurt to try…could it?
Truth be told, you don't know why you’re putting so much thought into it but maybe there was a small part of you that still believed in silly things like this. The little girl in you that held out hope that things like magic actually exist somewhere in this world.
Standing up, you turn and face the fountain as you clutch onto the coin with both hands and think of the perfect wish. What is it that you really wanted anyway?
A job? No, that was something you needed, and it didn't feel like something worth wasting a wish on.
A partner? Now that would be nice, someone to come home to and cheer you up on days like these, but even that didn’t feel right and you didn’t want to end up in one of those shitty genie situations where they take your words literally and end up screwing you over.
What was it that you truly wanted? Adventure? Excitement? Something to look forward to in a world that makes you constantly look back? That felt like the right direction but you had no idea how to phrase it so you just poured everything you were feeling into the coin and then flicked it into the clear blue water.
As it sank to the bottom you held your breath as you waited for something to happen. You don’t know what you were expecting, it’s not like everything you wished for would just magically appear out of nowhere…
You waited a few minutes, shifting anxiously on your feet as you stared at the coin at the bottom of the fountain. There were no other coins in the water and you wondered if someone came to clean it often, even the water was flawlessly clear despite the area being so secluded. You wondered if your coin would soon be cleaned out and debated fishing it out of the water.
It was pretty cute but maybe you could just grab a second one from the machine? You fisted your pockets for another penny but came up empty so you resorted to searching the surrounding dirt for any lost change. Much to your luck there was a single penny underneath one of the within-reach bushes and you quickly inserted it into the slot and tried to twist.
The machine didn’t budge. Was it broken? You tried twisting again, taking the penny out and putting it back, and even lightly smacking the machine but nothing worked. The “only one per person" sticker staring at you tauntingly. Perhaps that was your sign to stop trying.
Sighing, you glance at the time and decide you should probably start to head back if you want to make it to your car before the mechanic people do. Before you go though, you take one last look into the statue's warm eyes, letting the tiniest ounce of hope spark through you.
“I don’t really know what I wished for but… I hope it comes true.” You turn to walk away but then hesitate, taking in the scenery one last time “And I hope it makes me happy.”
Here we go again. Here is todays sad excuse for a gift. I saw that you seemed to like Star Wars. So Emma and Killian dressed as Han Solos and Leia.
Tumblr media
The entire time drawing this I just kept thinking this was Emma’s idea but afterwards she’s slightly annoyed with Killian because it was so easy for him to get dressed and her hair alone took like an hour to braid and style it. Also we ignore hands here and the coloring fucked up their faces but I did my best sorry it’s not the greatest.
