I have always felt the Left’s vitriol towards Kissinger was overblown, but that he was perhaps less masterful as many of his defenders claim. He accomplished some important diplomatic wins, and was also part of a terrible escalation in war. Is Kissinger really the specter many claim, or the master the others do or is he just a master at self-promotion who happened to live a long time?

Kissinger had some fairly prominent wins and the criticism that he receives is usually on conduct that is itself quite worthy of criticism.

Kissinger's biggest foreign policy successes were his shuttle diplomacy in the Middle East with regards to Israel, Egypt, and Syria and his pursuit of detente with the Soviet Union, cooling tensions between the US and USSR. However, it's not like Henry Kissinger was the lone voice in promoting detente - that was a wing of foreign policy thought that often found itself in the minority in the era of the containment doctrine. Detente was as much a creation of the trends of forces of history as much as it was the brainchild of any one department of state official. To attribute detente to Kissinger is bad Great Man history.

Much of the criticism of Henry Kissinger - support for Argentina during the Dirty War, the bombing of Cambodia, and support for Pakistan despite the genocide are very accurate. The damage and devastation wrought by these policies, and American support for them, lingers today. Moreover, not all of these policies were only seen to be devastating in hindsight or post-facto, these were entered into with knowledge of what was going on, especially in Pakistan or Operation Condor in the Southern Cone. If someone castigates Kissinger for the devastation his policies caused, there is a great deal of truth to it.

I often roll my eyes at left-wing critics of Henry Kissinger, not because their criticism is invalid, but because I find it remarkably hypocritical, even ignoring cranks and bigots like Noam Chomsky. The Democratic Socialists of America, for example, has been running headlines on the death of Kissinger, but they support Putin's war in Ukraine, support Uyghur camps, and are currently in support of Maduro's latest colonial escalation over Essequibo. Bernie Sanders is correct in criticizing Kissinger's actions in supporting authoritarian regimes in Latin America, including the use of death squads, but Sanders himself supported death squads in Nicaragua (even fundraising for Ortega knowing that he was doing it) and compared opposition efforts to expose Ortega's shootings and bombings of indigenous populations to Nazism (yes, really). So I largely find those critics to be pearl-clutching; they're quite happy to commit the same (or worse) and cheerlead for the same, provided that *they're* the ones doing it.

In April 1950, Owen Lattimore, one of America’s most esteemed Sinologists, received a request for a copy of his brand new book, Pivot of Asia: Sinkiang and the Inner Asian Frontiers of China and Russia.

Such requests for Pivot of Asia—an insightful work on the history, culture, and economy of Xinjiang (Sinkiang), a province in Northwest China sharing a long land border with the Soviet Union—were probably not rare, but this one was different.

Postmarked from New Delhi, the letter was written by a group of three political refugees from Xinjiang. The authors of the letter asked not just for a copy of the book; more importantly, they wanted Lattimore and his “friends” in the American government to support Xinjiang in the wake of the Chinese revolution.

The names of the letter’s three signatories—Muhammad Amin Bughra, Isa Yusuf Alptekin, and Colonel Adam Sabri—would have been immediately familiar to Lattimore, an expert on China’s ethnic borderlands. Describing themselves as “Turkestanis,” the trio of Uyghur men had long served the Chinese Nationalist Government in Xinjiang.

When the Chinese Nationalist Army in Xinjiang capitulated in September 1949, the three men faced an uncertain future. Accompanied by some 600 other Uyghur politicians and family members, they fled the provincial capital, Urumqi, just days before troops of the Chinese Communist Party arrived.

Writing from India, Bughra, Alptekin, and Sabri styled themselves rather pitifully, telling Lattimore they were “bereft of all valuables” and “penniless.” Despite their material condition, the men remained committed to telling the world of Xinjiang’s plight under the repressive regime of the Chinese and Soviet communists. Lattimore, Bughra, Alptekin, and Sabri wanted material and financial support. Addressing the China-expert as an “Adviser to the State Department,” they asked for “[help] from you or your friends,” noting that in the midst of the difficult journey to India, they and their 600 followers had lost all worldly possessions. If they were to survive in India—let alone agitate for the independence of Xinjiang—the three men desperately needed some assistance.

Upon reading the letter, Lattimore did seek out money for Xinjiang…but not in the way Bughra, Alptekin, and Sabri had hoped. The request prompted Lattimore to try to recruit a language and area studies expert for Johns Hopkins or another university in the United States. He sent off letters to the Foreign Service Institute, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), and the University of Pennsylvania, all asking for funds to recruit a Xinjiang specialist. At the time of Pivot’s publication and Lattimore’s fundraising effort, the United States Consulate in Urumqi had closed, a CIA operative named Douglas Mackiernan had been killed while evacuating from Chinese Central Asia, and the People’s Republic of China and the Soviet Union had inked a series of agreements to jointly develop Xinjiang.

All of this meant that the United States was denied access to Xinjiang, an important listening post in the Global Cold War. Lattimore probably feared that a knowledge gap about this “pivotal” region in Central Asian and Sino-Soviet affairs would develop among policymakers and policy analysts in Washington. So to prepare for after the Chinese revolution, Lattimore wanted the United States to have academics and educators familiar with the languages and locales of Xinjiang.

What is activism?

Basically, activism is an action , used to achieve the goal which is bring out the social change. The people who feel strongly about the cause and want to work toward change, that people could be an activist because an activist is the one who always fight for change in society. As we can know, the advantage of the online activism is no geographical constraints.

Uyghur Muslims

In China, there have human right problem which is all about the Uyghur Muslim and this issue also made social media headlines. Inhumane treatment of the Uyghur Muslims was documented and heavily discussed on twitter and TikTok. The users would not know the human right crisis happened around them if they not seen in the social media. The power of the online activism is the activist can spread the information that they wish to share around the world.

Black Lives Matters

Black Lives Matters is an activist movement which start as a hashtag (#BlackLivesMatter) after George Zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

The advantages and disadvantages of the social media activism.

Social media is the perfect host for misinformation

As we can see, social media is a powerful tool to raise awareness but it also the fastest way to spread the misinformation. Based on the research, the fake news spread six times faster than the true news on twitter. Many people don’t have or don’t take more time to do research about the information received in social media. They will share or retweet the post without fact-checking it. REMEMBER MISINFORMATION HAS PROVEN TO BE A SERIOUS ISSUE.

Is social media activism effective?

It depends. As u can see the advantages and disadvantages that I show above, the social media activism will work and effective if all the people really make a research and fact check the post that they share.

House slams China human rights in proxy vote amid coronavirus

The House of Representatives condemned China’s treatment of Muslim Uyghur minorities on Wednesday with dozens of lawmakers voting by proxy for the first time in history.

Democrats authorized proxy voting this month due to the coronavirus pandemic, arguing it was a wise move to protect the health of members. Republicans oppose the reform and are suing to have it ruled unconstitutional.

Although the legislation is likely to further sour relations between the US and China, it was uncontroversial among lawmakers, passing 413-1. It passed the Senate unanimously this month.

The Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act authorizes the Trump administration to sanction Chinese officials responsible for censorship or detaining large numbers of Uyghurs in western China in what the Chinese government claims is an antiterrorism campaign.

Republicans supported the bill authored by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) despite warning that they believe any legislation passed using proxy votes ultimately will be struck down by a Supreme Court decision.

“For more than 231 years, never have we seen a proxy vote on the floor of the House,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) told reporters Wednesday morning. “Whatever the Democrats move forward will probably never be held up to be law.”

Before lawmakers voted, McCarthy noted that 71 Democrats sent letters to the Clerk of the House authorizing lawmakers to vote for them, whereas just 12 Democrats missed a vote this month on a doomed $3 trillion coronavirus package.

“I wonder if any of them are having a fundraiser today,” McCarthy said.

Four New York Democrats voted by proxy: Reps. Nita Lowey, Carolyn Maloney, Jose Serrano and Paul Tonko.

Rep. Grace Meng, a Democrat who represents Queens, removed her mask at a lectern as she announced that she was voting in favor of the bill on behalf of Lowey, Serrano and Tonko.

Democratic Rep. Max Rose, who represents Staten Island and part of Brooklyn, voted on Maloney’s behalf.

There were minor bumps in lawmakers voting for each other. Rose stumbled over the wording of a statement announcing Maloney’s vote. “Get it right,” a man said into a C-SPAN hot mic.

Rep. Brad Sherman voted on behalf of fellow California Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna, but twice mispronounced his name as “Ka-hanna.”

Rep. Don Beyer of northern Virginia voted on behalf of seven colleagues, but had to return to the lectern after appearing to forget one, Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.).

Beyer also voted for Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), Rep. Bill Foster (D-Ill.), Gwen Moore (D-Wis.), Marc Veasey (D-Texas) and Alan Lowenthal (D-Calif.).

Democrats and Republicans sparred throughout the day on whether the reform is legal. House Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) said Republicans were wrong to characterize proxy voting as a dereliction of duty, saying lawmakers still “have to pay attention to the proceedings” and inform their proxy how to vote.

Similar versions of the bill condemning China’s treatment of the ethnic group passed the House and Senate last year, before the coronavirus pandemic, which many US officials blame on ineffective containment and deception by Chinese government officials.

Later Wednesday, the House is schedule to vote on extending provisions of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. That bill is likely to fail after late-breaking opposition from President Trump and the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Aydin Anwar is an Uyghur-American activist and a 4th year undergraduate at Duke University majoring in International Comparative Studies. She has focused a lot of her work on the plight of East Turkestan and its occupation through her fieldwork of Uyghur refugees in Turkey and organizing and speaking at conferences. She has appeared on Al-Jazeera, TRT World, and Now This - with her most recent piece regarding the concentration camps gaining over 60 million views worldwide. She also recently launched fundraiser campaign to support Uyghur orphans and women in Turkey and has raised over $71,000.
