So good to know that we're all thinking that Arthur and Seward are happily married To Each Other. Love that for them 💖

"Seven years ago we all went through the flames; and the happiness of some of us since then is, we think, well worth the pain we endured."
Although Dracula was published in 1897, some think that it takes place in 1893 because of the way the days and dates used line up. If that's the case, Jonathan Harker's epilogue, seven years later, would have been added around 1900. A new era bubbling with new change and new conventions. The story ends with Jonathan looking ahead to a new century filled with the unknown and being able to look on the past, despite its darkness, "without despair."

Speaking of Mina/Lucy, it's interesting that when Lucy gets bitten she has very similar symptoms to the ones Jonathan will be displaying and Mina starts taking care of her like how she will of him, always by her side, being watchful, dressing/undressing her, protects her by going after the threat when she senses he bat Dracula, she takes the caretaker role with them both when they're disabled.
Now that's a point I actually hadn't considered, even though it relates perfectly to my whole opinion about Mina-As-Mother. Like, I literally talked about her caretaking of both of them, but never considered what that says about Mina's perception of them, just what it says about Mina's character.
Or what it says about Jonathan and Lucy as bitten victims who weren't 'baptised in blood' or whatever the phrase is.
Caretaking of a disabled friend or husband were, of course, seen as admirable feminine traits then, just as they often are now. Which, there's a lot happening in that statement, but it is a known phenomenon that when a loved one Gets Sick, the wife/mother is expected to destroy herself to caretake, and do so without complaint. In actual practice this tends to create horrible nested systems of abuse, but we're discussing a Manic Pixie Dream Girl here, so it's fine.
If anything, it's additional evidence that Mina is meant to be pretty self-evidently Good And Pure to make it more fucked up when she gets burnt by the wafer and shit goes to hell.
But to my more immediate interest, does this mean that if Lucy lived, she would also have turned All White and gotten super powers?
Because, like.
Just the visual of Lucy and Jonnycakes going from "haha Mina has a type and it's soft spoken but passionate femmes with The Consumption" to "HAHA MINA HAS A TYPE AND IT'S THE TWINS FROM FF14" like.

It's SO funny to me and I love it SO much.
Her and Jack coming back from IDK The Markets to find these magical waifs in the sitting room and being physically assaulted by the absurdity of it all (still hot tho).

So was Lucy dying in her sleep the preferable option? Van Helsing only said that it mattered to the fate of her soul if she died awake or sleeping, now which one was better for her soul.
Well, here is a half-serious theory on why van Helsing thinks dying in her sleep was better. It is based on two facts kinda established by the story so far:
1. If a person in the process of becoming a vampire dies in their sleep, as a vampire they are in a dreamlike state.
2. Van Helsing is Catholic.
If a vampirized person died sleeping, they are in a dreamlike state as a vampire. They still nom on people, but they aren’t in control of it, it is an involuntary action. Therefore they are not responsible for it in the eyes of God. If they die, they can still go to heaven.
If a vampirized person died awake, they are fully in control as a vampire. But they have this urge to drink blood, and that is a temptation they are unfamiliar with. Very, very likely they will decide to act on it. Which (in van Helsing’s view at least) is a mortal sin. But since vampires are repelled by sacred objects, they cannot enter a church to go to confession. So if you kill them, they die in a state of mortal sin and go to hell.

the most frustrating part is that the one character who knows that he's in dracula steadfastly refused to tell anyone that they're in dracula until it was way too late
and now that he's trying to tell someone, he's doing it in the worst way possible

Jonathan, Lucy, and Sibyl put on a Shakespeare play once, and they were banned from ever trying to put on a play together again. It was too intense, Mina had to give a ted talk on the safety of controlling one's emotions, Utterson and Jack held the wrong opinion that theater was an inmoral art that degraded the soul for a week. Sibyl somehow ended up covered in blood, Jonathan cried so hard he puked, Lucy almost drowned thanks to Ophelia. Van Helsing, Quincey, and Lanyon want to see it again, and Arthur has another nightmare to add to his sleep.
So what I'm. So what I'm getting from this is that they were method acting??? igjeorpe
Mina: "LUCY YOU COULD HAVE DIED!!"
Lucy: "IT'S CALLED COMMITTING TO THE BIT MINA!"
Lissen Utterson can talk the talk all he wants but he's theatre trash like the rest of us.
So? Sibyl was Lady Macbeth, Jonathan... could be any character, and Lucy is Ophelia, as you said. Sounds like they were putting on an adaptation of the greats from Billy Shakes but with a primary focus on the heroines, and it went perfectly. No issues arose.
Van Helsing was impressed by the special effects. Where did you get all that fake blood, Sibyl? It. It was fake blood, wasn't it? Miss Vane?

Funny enough the novelization not only made enid a big as hell werewolf it made her the tallest werewolf in pop culture lmao, the biggest one before her barely counted as a werewolf, the Mega Lycan from Underworld Awakening and he was smaller than her official description in the novel, of course enid is on all fours all the time so she would be around 2.50m tall like that, which is smaller than the Hyde's 3 meters but he is still so fucking small compared to her??? And i though it could be Wednesday exagerating but she's consistent with every character description in her pov, she also mentions enid's wolf ears have pink and blue dye when in the show they made that dumbass hair falling on her head, feels like a completly different version of what we got cgi wise and honestly? The one im sticking to, Wednesday even mentions enid "laughs it off"(not those words but u know what she meant) when the Hyde trows her away. I'm so gonna attribute her being this huge to her being a blood moon wolf in fanfics, please incorporate her novel height in them i need it 😭😭😭😭
This is genuinely so funny enid was not a big girl but a werewolf that is "3 times her normal size"... THAT'S REALLY FUCKING BIG LMAO because even if it isn't completly about her height it's still way bigger than what the show gave us, like, AT THE BARE MINIMUN she's about the size of a Van Helsing werewolf and taller too
For reference

I don't understand the problem people have with rewrites of Dracula that humanize him. Yes, Dracula in the original book is a pure representation of evil. But like Carmilla he is a fictional and almost mythological figure at this stage who evolves with the times. The myth of the vampire has changed, so it is logical that Dracula himself follows this model. The book will still exist, so what's the problem ? The same goes for offering him a romance, whether or not it is with a rewriting of the character of Mina or an another invented female character, or sometimes a woman linked to the Van helsing lineage, or even Van helsing changed directly into a woman !
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even Jonathan himself for exemple in order to explore a homosexuality or bisexuality in the story of Dracula ! Strangely I never see people revolting when Jonathan is placed as a romantic interest. I totally see where that's coming from, but the fact is that their relationship isn't good in the original material either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the problem of Mina, a strong female character, apparently having her strong characteristics erased when she is made Dracula's lover... I don't agree.
Tumblr media
After all, it all depends on how the thing is done. Yes, the Mina from the 1992 film is not the one from the book (which is far from being a flawless representation of a strong woman... Yes, for the time when the book was released, it works, but in our time modern era, there are flaws apparently, as with most works dating back a certain number of years), but she still remains a strong female character in her own way and morally ambiguous in this adaptation. It's just a different version. I particularly liked the version of Mina in the canceled series of 2013. These 3 versions of Mina are all strong women on different levels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don't make me say what I didn't say. I love the original version of Dracula, and I really hope one day to have a more or less faithful adaptation, but the rewritings of the characters of Dracula and Mina are not to be demonized. I also think that we will surely continue in the future to have versions where Mina and Dracula are associated together as lovers, as other times not. Maybe one day we'll even have a version with Dracula and Jonathan officially partnered as lovers. Who knows ? And everything will simply depend on the writing of the characters. On the other hand, yes, I am a little exasperated by the tendency to make Jonathan a character either bland or an asshole in certain adaptations. Give me the adorable Harker from the book for a change please... Anyway, these are my thoughts on the various adaptations of the Dracula myth !

The sillies get a redraw. Ft: me struggling to draw Van Helsing but I think it came out pretty decent. Also know that my Van Helsing is officially a short king so plot twist, he’s secretly standing on a stool. (Anything for his five adult adopted children)
Anyway I actually had a blast redrawing this because despite the seemingly-perpetual-illness we stay winning, also that specific drawing has always been one of my favourites I’ve ever done, not necessarily because it’s good but just emotional value. I fully have it printed and stuck at the back of my copy of the book lmao, and I might have to replace it with the new one. Anyway they are all so dear to me and I’m smooching them all individually.

PRODUCTION UPDATES
Everyone's lines have been sent in and squirreled away to our sound designer, so our trailer and pilot are officially in the second stage of production! Watch This Space!
Our casting call for the rest of season one is still up and accessible HERE. We are especially interested in casting our Tom Van Helsing (30's/40's Trans Man) and Henri Martin (30's, female, POC)
Two extra treats arriving hopefully in the next few days! As soon as we can finish getting them set up and approved.
Sean has also requested I draw something from episode one for you all, and we can't say no to Mr Larkin! So let's see what I can do there.
