signal // noise — CRT + Vector | test 03
Sony Hi8 CCD-TR680E → Electronic Visuals EV4061 (waveform monitor) → Goodmans C210 (CRT TV)
First live test of the EV4061: signals pulled through the Hi8 tape path and re-emitted in green stripes of pure waveform language. Simultaneous output to CRT provides recursive contrast—sine hum vs scanline fuzz.
Next step: record direct to VHS, bypassing CRT, to explore tape glitches, signal decay, and tracking artefacts. The analogue stack keeps growing. The ghosts are getting closer.

Alright, @asteroidtroglodyte I'll bite: Why? Why is Jarrett's skill terrifying? That took alot of learning, hard work, and effort to make a cool thing with a skill of yesteryear, and you see that as terrifying?
I see it as inspirational.

Homemade vector driver circuitry for a cathode ray tube.
I want you to read that again.
Homemade vector driver circuitry for a CRT.
Jarrett made this himself from scratch, and controlled it from a raspberry pi attached to the serial terminal below it that he found in a ditch! The pi was watching live aircraft data from ADSB, so we could see real air traffic in the radar mode. He also had some interesting lissajous patterns, and a rendering of a witch.
It was one of my favorite exhibits from VCF Southwest 2023

One of the best times I had TAing in college took place the first week or two of a freshman programming class. A student needed help; it was my turn to go.
"What's up?"
"I got an error."
(Now, some of the error messages, you basically have to be told what they mean the first time, because there's a wall of text that doesn't get to the point or it's a topic that wasn't directly taught. But some are self-explanatory.)
"Did you read the error?"
"Yeah."
"Read it again. Out loud."
The student gave a huff, and started reading: "Expected semicolon on line 157… oh."
He scrolled to line 157, and swapped the commas for semicolons. The code compiled.
never forget the universal rule of the order of things: People Will Not Read It

Hot take, but this internet digital artist thing about freaking out over "copying" similar compositions to your pieces is a completely new phenomenon born from internet use, and it's frankly antithetical to how art even works.
Literally every single artist I personally know over 25 learned to draw in the first place by copying other artists' pieces in magazines, artbooks, manga, etc. Every. Single. One. No exceptions. Art itself is an imitation and we've always learned techniques and styles of imitation by copying others. Art has always inspired art. It is like this in every art form and has been for all of human history.
"Copying" dynamic poses is actually SO accepted and even EXPECTED in the professional comics industry that it has an industry name - lifts. I've yet to see any court case over this or anyone even upset by it in over 100 years.
Imitation is simply how human beings learn and create, I'm sorry. It is a brand new phenomenon that people get so upset about this. I'm obviously not talking about ai art which is void of any human labor, of tracing or lifting line for line and making a profit off a near exact copy of a piece, of reposting a piece and stealing traffic. I'm talking about simply a similar composition like use of color, or pose, or framing, etc. Y'all are weird for that one. Like first-time-in-art-history weird. I promise the first person to paint a greek spiral vector on their pottery wasn't as pressed about the thousands of imitations after, to the point where it now defines a cultural style, as you guys get about someone lifting a pose you drew.
Capitalism and the scope of freedom to search for references that the internet allows, which is a luxury no one else has had before, have grifted you out of understanding one of the bare-est, most fundamental and beautiful realities of how art even works and has worked since the dawn of time.
It is literally impossible to create something without copying something else. It is too inherent to what art is. Art is communal. Even the most solitary arts are communal, drawing inspiration from other works. It's one of the most beautiful things about art, and if you can't see that as an artist that's reason to be deeply concerned.

Blue being a "boring protag" isn't that bad!
Blue is used as a vector for the new setting and story to flow through, we need to see how the hivewings system works and how, on a surface level, we,d assume its citizens think it works (his pov)
Having a more bombastic protag (ala peril/glory type ) like Luna wouldn't allow us to get as good of a scope because it would be under bias already. Blue is important because he IS somewhat brainwashed to believe the hivewings are good, and his own beliefs being proven wrong IS a more potent turning point for us to see that the hivewings system is flawed than just being told it from the beginning via protag inner monologue.
We see that, blue, a soggy paper towel of a dragon who is a model student and basically a perfect silkwing citizen get dogged on and treated like dirt for existing, and if he's treated like that even THOUGH he's so "well behaved", what happens to the more outspoken silkwings? What happens to silkwings that CANT or ARENT a model citizen? If blue can't live peacefully at the "respected level" of silkwing performance then nobody can. And that shows us it's fundamentally unjust. Nobody can chill!
And I can agree, it's not an excuse for him to STAY a little dull as a character in the future, but I feel as if any arc 3 discussion has to be taken with a grain of salt imo :P
And the parallel between his father admiral and HIM being what radicalised blue is NOT talked about enough, he looked into a flesh mirror and saw what he was doing to himself by following the rules, trapping himself forever.
He lived dreaming that him the hivewings were equal, becuase why wouldn't they be? He had a good heart. Why wouldn't they? He felt guilt about disobeying the rules because he was empathetic and felt pity for a cold system of oppressive laws and dictators.
Even in the flamshilk cave, he was trying to justify why they did this. They wouldn't exploit him, would they? We're equals, right? Maybe I am dangerous?
But, he saw what he could become in that cave, his own flesh and blood, his father. His father who felt for the hivewings as he did, his father who was rotting alone in a pile of letters, Delusional cries to the queen. Because they were equal, right?
They'd listen!
Right?

everyone suggesting alternatives for Photoshop is inevitably not actually using most of the Photoshop functionality, which to be fair is probably the vast majority of the potential Photoshop userbase.
the reason Photoshop has been industry standard for 30 years is that it does almost everything and has almost always done almost everything. it has had a few weird slow adoptions, for example it didn't support basic live mirroring while drawing until the 2010s (ish). it didn't have recovery saves or auto saving until about then. it's never been the absolute last word in real media synthesis, that was Corel Painter for years and now I think CSP is probably the king. illustrator is better at vectors. etc. but Photoshop can do all of those things well enough to prepare a professional grade, print-ready artwork from RAW file to layout to text to retouching to total from-scratch illustration, in one step, with layer and channel separation, multiple types of masking, adjustment layers, lossless file object placement, vector text transformation including all standard print layout tools like kerning, like spacing, comprehensive font support, and both true font variation and faux transformation like fake bold and fake italic. and clients and print workflows are expecting PSD files and file preparation for this reason. Krita, as an example of a popular program suggested as an "alternative to Photoshop" which I have used for hundreds of hours to do professional and personal work, is great for drawing but has a completely unusable text engine, you can't make a webcomic with speech bubbles easily and quickly in Krita. it was like pulling teeth even trying to put "BABY SLUT" on my Lethal Company skin with Krita. but you can lay out an entire magazine in Photoshop in an afternoon, and people do (print preparation is whole other topic I'm not saying vogue is prepared solely in Photoshop, it isn't, I'm saying you CAN do it in Photoshop)
I have never paid for an Adobe product, I am not pro Photoshop, I am pro getting my work done. I would absolutely love for there to be an actual Photoshop alternative, but there isn't. there are individual alternatives for individual features of Photoshop, and if you are working in a limited professional scope or you just want a drawing program or just want to make your webcomic or just want to do pixel art then one or two programs will replace Photoshop for you. everyone who, like me, has to do RAW editing, fashion retouching, print and web layout, pure digital illustration, vector illustration, text and graphic design, and all the rest of the crap I have to do in a format that's accepted by publishers and the rest of the various workflow destinations it's just not realistic. which is why it's great that Photoshop is completely trivial to pirate at any stage of its development you care to install, including versions prior to the introduction of the AI crap, the cloud crap, and the rest of the crap no one serious is actually using unless their manager is forcing them to

whisper, we all know your a good shot, but I have a real test for you.
Shoot an apple off of Surges head, William Tell style. without missing.
"And you're trusting me to do this?" Whisper asked, watching the tenrec toss the apple up and down.
"Well if you hit me, You have two options admit you hit me on purpose and deal with everyone being mad at you or admit that you're a crappy shot. The way I see it, I'm perfectly safe," Surge said with a toothy grin.
Whisper didn't have a counter for that. Truthfully, she still didn't know what to think when Surge approached her for what she calls a 'trust building exercise.' No doubt the woman had read about the classic trickshot in a book, Surge being turning into an avid reader was not on her bingo card, and wanted to try it out for shits and giggles.
Deciding to appreciate the roundabout olive branch, Whisper had Cyan enter the wispon and took aim, "Okay put the apple on your head."
Surge moved to place the but realized something, "Pfft wait hold on this'll only work if I let my quills down." Taking her hairband off, her long quills cascaded down, allowing her to place the apple on her head. "Now I'm ready," Surge said with a soft smile, secretly very excited.
Looking down the scope at the tenrec, Whisper took a moment to take Surge in and was having trouble reconciling this woman being the same angry destructive menace she first meet a few months ago. She looked so…..content right now. With her quills down and happy smile, Whisper was forced to admit something.
"I can kinda see what Lanolin sees in her now," Whisper said quietly to herself as she began pulling the trigger.
Not quietly enough apparently as Surge shouted, "LANOLIN SEES WHAT IN ME!?"
The shout startled Whisper, throwing off her aim at the worst possible moment.
BANG!
A split second sickening squelch sounded out as the shot took out Surge’s right eye.
Dropping the wispon, Whisper shouted in complete horror, "SURGE OH MY GOD I'M SO SORRY-"
Before she knew it Surge was upon her. But instead of a well justified beatdown, Surge had a completely different priority, "WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY ABOUT LANOLIN SEEING SOMETHING IN ME!?"
"SURGE YOUR EYE! WE NEED TO GET YOU TO THE INFIRMARY!" Whisper was not enjoying seeing the bloody cybernetic insides of her skull.
"I'LL WALK IT OFF! NOW TELL ME!"
Watching her face slowly knit itself back together surprisingly did little to calm Whisper down, "FOR GODS SAKE SURGE-"
"PLEASE WHISPER!"
It's those two words that got her to calm down and shift her gaze rightwards. Plain vulnerable desperation was clear as day in her intact eye. Taking a deep breath, Whisper got her thoughts in order, "Okay I'll tell you. But first you have to put me down."
Surge was leaning them both over so far they were perpendicular to the ground, Whisper impressively ignoring the blood dripping onto her face from Surge’s gaping head wound.
"Sure sure," Surge acquiesced, setting her down gently. A few seconds later both women were sitting on the ground facing each other. "So?" Surge asked softly.
"So when Tangle and I got wine drunk and hired the chaotix to investigate something about Lanolin, the thing we asked them to investigate was who she had a crush on. Vector and Espio purposefully spilled beans in front of the three of us and she confirmed it while she was yelling at us," Whisper explained.
I'm not gonna tell her it's full on love. I'm not taking that away from either of them.
A short life of made up of mostly agony trained her not to grab hope so zealously, "Really? You're not lying are you?" Surge said carefully.
Looking dead in the eye, Whisper said firmly, "Surge, listen to me. I know we do not have the best relationship but I would never NEVER do something as cruel as lie to you here. You are without a doubt the most important person in her life."
"She feels the same way about me the way I feel about her?" Surge said, somehow still able to blush despite the blood loss.
Oh
It was one thing to heavily suspect it but confirming it was another thing. How could two people so different love each other?
Well I suppose that's a silly question coming from me of all people.
"Positive," Whisper said, putting a reassuring hand on her shoulder. The tenrec stiffened and Whisper worried she had overstepped her bounds when Surge wrapped her in a hug and began sobbing into her shoulder.
"T-t-thank y-you," Surge stuttered out, staining her cloak with blood and tears
Once over her shock, Whisper hugged her back. Gently rubbing circles on her back and patting her shoulder. Letting her know she was safe to cry happy relieved tears as long as she wanted. It was during this that Whisper recalled something.
What was it that Claire said once? History doesn't repeat itself but it does rhyme

TMAGP 39 Thoughts: Meat Dreams
It's a rare Alex and Jonny co-written episode this week. It's also a very short and sweet one, although I am told that's to buy time for some longer episodes that are upcoming. However, it'll also be a short and sweet post from me because the nature of this one does mean I've precious little to say. I thought the episode was pretty good over all. I'm not a huge fan of the statement here but I do think it was well-written and well acted, it just didn't do much for me. As always though, there are a few things to pick at for the show's wider mythos.
Spoilers for TMA , and TMAGP episode 39 below the cut.
This is probably the simplest episode of the show so far. While there are scenes they're all contiguous and, as such, does make this episode fell quite small. Which is good and bad. It gives the episode an air of intimacy — which is apt for the content — but it does also leave little unseen and unsaid which is bad for these things.
I don't have an awful lot to say about this one. I think the takeaways and themes here are either very explicit or will be up to personal interpretation. Meaning you either don't need me to explain, or I cannot explain, the various goings-on in this episode. Although of note the official affix to denote who is a TMA character is now PL [name]. So this was PL Alice, as opposed to regular Alice. PL meaning primeline, as in prime timeline. And talk of the timelines is interesting to me because a prime timeline is a different thing than a prime dimension. Lots of things can change dimension to dimension but a series of timelines suggests some sort of common starting point. Timelines are different because events are different rather than the fundamental nature of things. I don't necessarily think that's the case here given the scope of the changes in regards to things like the Fears but we know the underlying metaphysics are at least compatible. Which might suggest that the only reason things are different in TMAGP is because people did different things. The Fears are different, or non-existent, because they were never fed or never born rather than simply not being a factor of the world. It's hard to know how much any of that will matter but they're at least framing it in terms of choice and consequence rather than a different set of rules from the get go. Although as Sam's appendicitis shows it does appear as though these timelines are trying to converge on some sense of uniformity.
Post-statement Sam and Georgie make it halfway down the road before finally clocking the very statement-y nature of Alice's statement. Which I'm taking to mean that [Error]'s abilities do involve a level of passivity or obfuscation when they're pulling these statements out of people. At least when the tape recorders are the vector. If that isn't the case Georgie has gone from telling the Wardens to be very aware of people statementing to letting Alice monologue for 6 unbroken minutes. I'm curious to know if we'll be seeing more of this sort of thing, or if it's more of a one off. I do also think it's quite odd Sam didn't ask Alice some of the more pressing questions. Sam knows the Magnus Institute is a fairly large deal in both universes. He's got first hand experience with one of them and in the primeline he knows it was the centre of the Change and that the event that ended it is named after it. He knows it turned into a big tower, knows everyone could see the big tower, and knows they blew up the big tower. Given Sam and PL Sam both had appendicitis, and both got together with Alice, you'd think a "weird question: did your Sam ever go to the Magnus Institute and see a dude turn into a skellington?". It might not elucidate anything, what with them being in different places, but it does seem like the sorta thing you'd at least ask about given all that context. But it does seem like they'll be stuck together in the next PL ep, so maybe he'll ask then.

>Begin Eidolonstuck
i thought a lot about these so im gonna explain them below the cut
[Original Prankster] by The Offspring. goofy for kiddo june, much like homestuck she has the most straightforward. Fun experience. if this were like, an "au" i imagine imps would just start showing up, shades slipping free from the undertow and completely overwhelming the planet with numbers. they would get popped into. eidolon grist. by errant anvils, tripwires, and all manner of cream pies. the song is upbeat, catchy, and fun. the body is made out of a ghostbusters statuette :3
[Body]
by Mother Mother. it is chaotic, nonsensical, and confusing. why does this represent her soul? very light and rain. its designed to confuse and frustrate her. light into dark magic is pretty grimdark-y. she can direct her eidolon with the wands, causing it to shine a black light from its chest. design notes are the princess hat like jaspersprite, the needlewands, and just a fun fact but the legs are a vector of a slot machine handle
[Die Anywhere Else]
from Night in the Woods. this ones one of my favorites, die anywhere else as a power for dave rules to me. not to suck my own dick but like. yeah thats what he does! the power allows him to postpone death, not prevent it. one more hour, one more dave, die somewhere else, not here.
[Friends With You]
by The Scary Jokes. another favorite! jade probably gets her eidolon way before everyone else, but i dont think shes a veteran. she just peers through the scope and watches from afar. its cool how the only way she can interact with her friends is through the barrel of a gun! you figure out the implications of this
--------
[I Remember It]
by someone on twitter idk search it on youtube. Funny song, funny guy! song is about doug walker taking on the burden of every nightmare, remembering it so you dont have to. davesprite remembers and changes it so it never happened. not really sure how the sprited players fit into this, i guess they split off from the main eidolon? but yeah davesprite remains super fucked up and came back to fix things.
[Dog Days Are Over]
by Mitski. vibe of the song should be obvious, this was on allll the sadstuck jade playlists back in the day. she focuses on the only thing that matters, keeping her friends safe
--------
[Burning Down The House]
by The Talking Heads. aha bdth reference. this is a pretty straightforward retcon thing so i dont have much to say about it not from the comic, though it looks cool. shed have to like, realize something latent within herself and then her dinky eidolon would grow into the House, and shed need to climb the steps and enter the door. pacing wise i think she should have gotten a new eidolon when she god tiered as well, so i guess it MIGHT not be dinky, but cmon we know june, it is. its some vrillyhoo shit. the songs vibe fits with Original Prankster, and with june, i think. art notes: the texture in the cuts of the House are purple meat, and theres lava under the foundation
[Same Bones New Body]
by The Variants. boom. body upgraded into this, its a great naming scheme. Body gets melted down in the green sun and is reconstructed into this, still a confusing amalgamation but with more purpose. the abilities are obviously seer of light stuff and once again read the comic for info on that. my fun fact is my best friends sister had a falling out with someone in this very small band, which i didnt know before listening to them
[One More Time]
by Daft Punk. big fan of the band here. i mean im not a daft punk fan, but in this context. something about it is like. dave chill the fuck out, have some fun! which feels like a thing the sburbian universe would force on him. relax, take it less seriously! heres a strong as fuck metal beast to punch your enemies out of time. it has a similar shape to his og eidolon but its built of different parts. a metaphor?
[Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)]
by AWOLNATION. sacrifice into change is crazy for jade, the universe reallyyy hates her. loneliest girl in the world shit. it pretty much sums her up, when she meets up with her friends her old eidolon isnt as useful. now she gives up parts of herself until theres nothing left. one of the bigger visual departures from her first eidolon, its probably completely destroyed and out of it comes this and Dog Days
thanks for reading to the end :3

IDW's Canoncity in the Sonic Games
Sonic Official - Season 7 Episode 7
"Is IDW canon?" It is canon. It does take place right after Forces."
-Chris Hernandez
Sonic Frontiers
I bet Tangle would love climbing around these ruins.
-Sonic on Kronos Island
I have found elements from my own EggNet, United Federation, even Planet Donpa Kingdom race data! As best as I can surmise, this Cyber Space extends well beyond the scope of these islands and is gaining information from around the world. Fascinating!
-Egg Memo 4
TailsTube
Tumblr media
From TailsTube No. 1 (feat. Sonic)
[Amy opens the gift.] Amy: O-oh, boy… um… [The gift appears on the monitor screen. It is a destroyed Moto Bug.] Omega: Destroying robots brings me joy. It should bring you joy as well. Amy: Yeah, but I have robot friends, too, you know? Omega: Disgusting. You should tell me where they live. Tails: Uh. Should I just… uh? Amy: Let's move on, yes.
Tails: Yeah, actually! Jewel is organizing a holiday party over at Restoration HQ. Vector's bringing board games. Cream taught the local Chao a few carols. Ah, it's gonna be great!
-TailsTube No. 6 (Surprise Gift Exchange Bonanza)
Tumblr media
From TailsTube No. 10 (Happy New Year)
Sonic Forces Speed Battle
the Sonic Forces mobile game gets away with it because they are all "phantom illusions" not sure if Sonic Dash has an excuse, might be one of the few non-canon sonic games

In Defense Of Electronic Civil Disobedience
Tumblr media
There has been some criticism lodged against us. Claims have been made that our activism is merely engagement. That our movement is sort of sofa ersatz activism. However, in order for this argument to hold true, you must make a central conceit. That the concrete world is somehow more real than the digital. Members of The Kollectiv do not view the net from this narrow scope. We see the digital realm as an extension of the more abstract plain of technology. We see the space, though incorporeal on a macroscale, to be very real.
The average user in 2024, spent a 1/5th of their life online. Whether engaging with shopping, posting, or just browsing the net this is a significant portion of time. Enough time is spent on the net that a culture has emerged around various social media sites. Artifacts are made that can only be interacted with in the digital space. And people can become totally enmeshed in a digital world if they wish. Interacting with the greater world almost exclusively in the digital realm.
An extreme example would be an individual who works as a digital nomad, does all their shopping online, and interacts with others exclusively through social media. Although this individual would be seen to be living a fringe net lifestyle, this way of life is very possible. To argue that activism should not be done through the medium of technology is only alienating. It does not serve one's greater purpose. 64% of the world is online. That is 5.52 billion souls.
Tumblr media
Though The Kollectiv adopts a view of the internet separate from those informed by commodity and corporate interest, the economic activity on the net can’t be ignored. Imagine the disruptive potential of a boycott. The sheer volume of activity allows the activist to make lasting change on the world. We can look back to The Gamestop Short Squeeze. A grassroots political action originating in Wallstreets Bets. To go further back in history we can make reference to the initiatives of net.artists. Groups such as the VNS created works like the “A Cyberfeminist Manifesto for the 21st Century”. Work like this advanced both feminism and digital art. To write off the digital landscape as a lesser landscape of reform, activism, and engaging art, one would have to ignore the efficacy of these movements.
Going further into the political landscape we can look at the example set by Net Strike. A software that was deployed by activists in the 90’s for digital sit ins. It essentially was a tool for groups to orchestrate DDOS attacks. A vector of protest, that has unfortunately been taken from the general public and is now deployed heinously by state actors to suppress movements. This reversal if anything shows that net activism should be more staunchly defended. The internet is now often the first point of contact individuals have with any movement. And it is also the center of global operations. Are rights on the net should be defended, advanced, and clearly defined. The right to protest should not just extend to the physical space, when the digital space is becoming such a driving factor in our lives.
The Kollectiv’s digital graffiti campaign and its current food disparity initiative is only the beginning. We plan on continuing to mobilize people to be the change they want to see in the world. By establishing our ad hoc hyperlink structure: essentially a website built within the framework of another. We will be raising awareness for our cause. Making people think about the effects of food disparity, while considering new ways to experience the internet. Are either of these aims ignoble? I do not believe so.
Tumblr media
We are continuing in the footsteps of activists such as The Electro Hippies. Advancing methods of protest into the 21st Century. We are also continuing the efforts of situationist thinkers. Now that globalism taken home and the internet has pushed commodity and spectacle into our home. We must attack it at its source if liberty is to continue to flourish and grow for future generations.
To ignore the possibilities of change now is rob the children of the future of their potential fruit. That is why I continue to call for the development of net.art and methods of activism on the web. Not only to raise awareness for causes affecting us here and now, but to change the landscape of the internet for the people of the future.

you're getting Content from all my settings today because i've kinda narrowed down the magical scope for the plane dragon runes.. so far i've only imaged them being used to move something parallel to their surface in the direction of the arrow, so i decided that this is all they can do. the vector rune will move something in a specific direction (a specific vector even) and also it glows when in use because why not, and produces heat. since this is the dragon's jet engine it means that it also creates a big hot target for pursuers to lock onto.. if they can catch them
when placed on humans it exerts a positive pressure on the bloodflow helping it circulate under high-G scenarios. all vector rune magic comes from the dragon, not the rider, so the runes on a human have to be paired with a dragon who can activate them when needed. otherwise they're just normal tattoos.
additionally i need to draw a diagram of how the wing works because obviously the low and high speed flight regimes require the wing to perform differently in terms of flexibility, rigidity and so on. so i was thinking it's a membrane bilayer which acts similar to a bat patagium in low speed flapping flight. but when transitioning to the jet flight, fibrous tubes linking both halves of the bilayer stiffen hydraulically to create a thin but much more rigid fixed wing with a bracing support structure inside it. I'll have to draw that but u yet the idea
