january 24 - dinner || @jegulus-microfic || wc: 557 || cw blood? but more the idea of it

Cooking dinner, and this was the part at which Regulus had always been horrible, the small talk, the place settings, the flickering of a candle in his peripheral vision. A misplaced relationship with his brother because their childhood house had been one of shadows with teeth, and he always had to be on the lookout. He heard a whisper, a rustle of clothing, from down the hallway and looked up to see Sirius halfway out the window, begging Regulus to come with him, to run away, we’ll die in this house, Reg, please. 

Regulus sighed, hands on the counter to ground himself to the here and now, Sirius laughing in the other room. He was trying. They were trying. He picked up the drink refills he had been sent into the kitchen to grab and made his way to the dining room, dripping the gooiest parts of himself across his brother’s floor as he did so. Eyes met him at the door, gray on gray, a few more smile lines than his own.

Sirius began to lift a hand to his chest but aborted the movement halfway through. Regulus felt it anyway, a claw mark in his sternum and it was ripping him open inch by inch, a scene from a horror movie, and maybe he was going to be sick because he could feel the wetness through his shirt and if he looked down, surely it would be blood. 

“Reg?” Two hands gripped his shoulders, and when he tore his eyes away from Sirius, he was looking at James, his brother’s incredibly stupid best friend. This dinner thing had been for them actually, because Sirius couldn’t be separated from James, soulmates of a peculiar sort, and he had informed Regulus that they had to meet. 

A ringing noise then, because Regulus felt like he had met James before, when Sirius was spitting at him in the middle of a grass field, or that’s what it felt like since everything else had fallen away the moment he had heard something something something more of a brother than you’ll ever be. James had been there then, in Sirius’ shadow, sans teeth, and in the smile lines around his eyes that hadn’t been there when he’d left.

Sound came back to him, all of a sudden, as did sensation, and he looked down at the water he had spilled across his shirt and his hands and the floor, heat rising in his cheeks, shards of glass at his feet. Sirius stared at him, shocked, unmoving, per usual. James’ hands were gentle on his shoulders as he moved Regulus backwards, out of the way, sitting him down in a chair and grabbing a napkin from his place setting. 

There was silence as James moved around Sirius’ house like it was his own, dust pan for the glass, paper towels for the water, new cups, new napkins, new shirt for Regulus. One of Sirius’ from several years ago, and he remembered this one, which was the only reason he pulled himself out of the chair he’d been guided to and into the bathroom to change. 

Forehead to the mirror and a deep, uncontrollable sense of why am I here and so close to calling Barty to come pick him up and James fucking Potter knocking softly at the door. 

“Dinner’s ready.”

x reader always writes jakurai as so damn suave but we know better. yes this beautiful man will make you fall in love but you will realize his communcation skills VERY quickly

lol that reminds me of that division study guide set of programs that happened three years ago i think???? where the seiyuu rated various traits for their characters and hayami-san rated both his conversational skills and comfort around women at a 3.5/5 bc he’s at least good with children and the nurses in his hospital and that’s so telling to me LOL

five fic friday

One More Troubled Soul (WIP 66K, M) by @not-nervous-jester - this post-S1 fic is still pretty early on, I think, but I'm really enjoying it; Fang in particular is a great delight, as is the weird old OC and his 3-legged dog. (Jams' previous longfic, Chasing Storms, is a personal fave; and actually, because I want to re-read the fifth fic I was going to include, I'm going to call that the fifth recommendation for the week.)

This Wasn't In the Job Description (20K, M) - this just finished the other day; I probably should reread the whole thing, since it sounds like the author's changed a few things, but regardless: this timeloop fic about Lucius reliving his last (?) day has been haunting me since I first read it as a WIP months ago.

The Body Knows (21K, M) by @veeagainsttheday - while we're on spooky, this is a great post-reunion story about weird phenomena, nightmares, ghosts???? and making things right.

Don't let me die with my soul in the air (WIP 56K, E) also by @veeagainsttheday - I very much love this Ed POV canon retelling that goes into a post-S1 reunion, it's one of the things that inspired me to write Hungry for love, ready to drown.

I have this headcanon about writer/artist duo byler. If they were to write a ‘fictional’ story/graphic novel relating to their fights with the Upside Down—like I think a lot of us believe they will, and the govt were to allow that, the caveat would be that it has to be under pseudonyms so that story can’t be connected back to Hawkins. (At least not until the NDA expires rnfjdjxi)

So they write the book under pen names and it becomes decently popular enough to get sequels etc. and they decide hey we should use pen names for other stuff—like mayhaps a gay romance novel (since this is the 90s). So they use different pen names for that. And then maybe they write a few children’s books (bc maybe they have foster kids and tell them stories and) and those have to be under different pen names too.

Nonfiction stuff, like DnD info books and, like, writing books or how to draw books idk, those are the books that are under their real names.

And like, they don’t always pair up under their different pseudonyms—sometimes they write/illustrate w other authors, depending on the genre.

The Party (Extended) all knows ofc. I hc that one or two of them become teachers so they earn Lots of Cool Points with their kids by having autographed copies of the DnD novels.

Then in like the early 2010s, all of byler’s pen names are connected with them. This sparks rumors about their relationship (bc gay novel??? w no sad ending??), so they make a post about it (I hc that they’re on tumblr like Mr gaimem, Will likes looking at art), confirming that yes they’re in a relationship. Been in a domestic partnership since that was legal, and been married since that was legal where they live. They probably lose some fans bc ✨homophobia✨ but they also gain fans bc gay.

Also in like 2014-2015 their gay romance gets picked up by a small movie company and does decently well.

In like 2016-2019 their DnD series is picked up by netflx to be a show. V Popular.

Both times, Mike and Will are involved so that nothing unfortunate happens to their stories (looking at u l/ast a/irbender & fake pjo movies)

Anyway this went off on a tangent but I have all their pen names if anyone wants them Djdidieidfi
