finally working on part two of the Blood’s thicker” fanfic I wrote years ago introducing Sebastian’s Victorian Son Dorian Moran. But god damn it. Wanting to make him a regular little kid with tantrums and meltdowns to irritate Seb is so difficult bc I know realistically that kid would straight up he murdered the second his whining and crying gets an octave higher than Seb can take (& trust me, it’s not much higher than regular speech) & making seb even the tiniest bit caring & essentially a normal dad is so hard. 😭

the kid is two, & this man wants to drop kick him for just breathing. I can’t, I can’t. Idk if I’ll ever finish it. & now I realized why it took me years to pick up that story line again 🥲😭

but argh, I love little Dorian & want to develop him as a character 😭😭

The Mazarin Stone

First published in 1921, this was an adaptation of a one-act play Doyle wrote called The Crown Diamond: An Evening with Sherlock Holmes that ran in London that same year and featured Sebastian Moran.

It is also written in the third person, rare for a Holmes story.

A gasogene was a two-globed late Victorian device for producing sparkling water or other such carbonated beverages; the liquid was placed in the bottom and a mixture of tartaric acid and bi-carbonate of soda at the top. Sebastian Moran and "The Empty House" in Spanish

When I read "La aventura de la casa vacía", the translation into Spanish of "The Adventure of the Empty House" many years ago I didn't pay too much attention to Sebastian Moran, I was just happy to see Sherlock back from the dead after "El problema final" (original title "The Final Problem"). I'm not sure but probably I read both stories the same day because my work was shit and the city I was living was shit I could.

This is how Watson describes Moran:

It was a tremendously virile and yet sinister face which was turned towards us. With the brow of a philosopher above and the jaw of a sensualist below, the man must have started with great capacities for good or for evil.

"Sensualist"... WHAT IS THAT?

Ok, I'll read this part translated by Juan Manuel Ibeas:

El rostro que nos encaraba era tremendamente viril, pero de expresión siniestra, con la frente de un filósofo por arriba y la mandíbula de un depravado por abajo.

"Depravado"? Ok, that changes everything. Sensualist can be defined as "somebody who seeks pleasure" or hedonist. This makes me think about Moriarty the Patriot's Moran.

Cigarettes, alcohol, gambling and women. This Moran is a huge sensualist.

Depravado can be translated as depraved, perv, or somebody with flawed morals. The first two uses are more common currently and mostly used as sexual deviant, so my image of this Moran is...

Happosai from Ranma 1/2, a classic representation a perv that is obviously a perv according to Victorian standards (?) So, yeah... this is hard! -swears in Chilean-

Another thing that I noticed was the small talk between Holmes and Moran:

“You fiend!” he kept on muttering. “You clever, clever fiend!” “Ah, Colonel!” said Holmes, arranging his rumpled collar; “‘journeys end in lovers' meetings,’ as the old play says. (...)"

Moran recognise how Holmes outsmarted him, and Holmes takes time to quote Twelfth Night, Or What You Will from Shakespeare (know in Spanish as Noche de Reyes o La duodécima noche). The quote is very romantic. Context of the quote here because I haven't read that play in English.

In the translation some part of the magic is lost:

Y no dejaba de murmurar entre dientes: —¡Maldito demonio! ¡Maldito demonio astuto! —¡Ah coronel! —dijo Holmes, arreglándose el arrugado cuello de la camisa—. Nunca es tarde si la dicha es buena, como dice el refrán.

Moran recognise Holmes' cleverness but in this case Holmes use an old proverb that is so old that it appears in many classical Spanish books like Juan Varela's El comendador Mendoza (1876) and Miguel de Unamuno's Abel Sánchez (1917). This proverb is used as "better late than never".

Translation is a hard work, and reading both versions is good exercise along watching many adaptations.

bit of a shit head-canon but in my head seb is a dad, a really good dad despite his own shit upbringing. mostly modern Seb bc he can be more open when it comes to affection & supporting his kids etc. & I mostly picture Seb being an amazing girl dad in modern hence my oc Astrid comes in & is the reason I started having this whole head-canon in the first place right? But even though I first imagined them having a really shitty relationship bc the first time I wrote her I pictured her showing up at Seb’s door step at age 14/15 angry, a troubled kid who mirrored teen seb a lot bc essentially that is when I pictured he accidentally conceived her & bc he was a kid himself he ran & didn’t look back bc he was terrified he would be an awful father. & honestly given what he went through who could blame him? (Or ether he just never knew she even existed until then lmao, couldn’t decide which I preferred bc the latter was hilarious to me at the time)

anyway in that AU he’s confronted with a lot of the shit he had to face a lone through this kid he has to form a relationship with & he heals through that a bit. But that was really the first time Astrid Moran ever came to exist.

In most of the dad Seb AUs I’ve done he’s raised her as an adult since birth but in any AU, he’s just the complete opposite of his own father bc I like to think that even though he probably does have a lot of issues still, he can be impulsive & have a bit of a temper, he can do his best to not scar his kids the way he was scared & just tries to blow off steam when he’s out murdering for his boss instead of blowing at a toddler for pouring syrup on his shoe or something (which he would never do regardless bc Seb’s always been soft in my head, like really, truly soft. Deep down. Like he’s never lost that little five year old persona who kept a piece of the mischievousness, curiosity, play & love that kid naturally had before losing Alex at age 6.) but that view is mostly for modern Seb.

for Victorian Seb is a bit trickier for me personally anyway bc I love soft seb so much but I base off Vic seb mostly off The Hound of the D’urbersvilles the most in terms of personality & that mother fucker was FUNNY. But the bitch had major Anger, addiction & a whole slue of issues I can’t possibly try to replicate, specially towards a child bc I would only turn him into Augustus in a way & I don’t want that for Seb. So I do make him a little soft, but to make thighs more tense for him & easier for me to write that rougher Sebastian I decided his child, my OC Dorian Moran is a biracial child seb gets stuck with after he does what he does abroad, but before he can run away like he always does Dorian’s mom dies during child birth & Seb, well he has to take DAMN RESPONSIBILITY for once. Victorian Seb is harder for me in this regard bc his personality is definitely vile & abusive but even then he stands for his child a bit more than his own dad ever did for him, at least he learns to with time, even though at the beginning he is absolutely awful to him. Bc let’s face it, seb is not a patient or kid man. So dealing with a toddler is very hard for him. But despite how much he dislikes his kid & how mean he can be towards him. I like to think that seb does care for him & despite everything, he invests in Dorian’s care having a nanny for him & eventually possibly having Moriarty help him tutor the boy ( since ya know he essentially lives with the man, & yeah a brothel is not the best place to raise a kid, but he’s trying, right?) & I like to also think that at least once in his life Sebastian stands up to someone discriminating against Dorian, perhaps bc of his race or his ilegitimen status, & maybe when Dorian is older & Seb has become more fond of him bc he learns to see him as his son & recognizes quirks maybe he had in his youth & generally learns to love Dorian as the son & human being he is. At some point Seb has to come around & at least show Dorian once that he got his back. Like damn.

anyway this think pice went wildly longer than I planned bc I originally just wanted to state abt how Astrid was mostly a Modern OC while Dorian was Victorina but I went too into thought about Dorian bc I love him & I feel bad I haven’t spent more time developing his character & relationship with Seb (ooooh!! Specially bc I think it would be nice & a total slap on the face to Seb if Moriarty offered to educate the boy. Not only in maths & science & all of the academia, but as an heir of sorts, teaching him the other side of the business eventually, bc think about it, who the fuck is going to suspect a biracial lad in Victorian England runs a world wide criminal empire after the very napoleon of Crime himself , master of disguise & perception Professor James bleeding Moriarty) not only inherit him but taught him since childhood. Plus since Seb would teach him to shoot & handle guns (as a matter of manly honor obvs & not an excuse to bond with his son) Dorian would be the whole package in terms of running Moriarty's criminal enterprise, becoming an incredibly powerful assassin.

I'm Soo curious to how you interpret Moran through the lens of his relationship with his mother? Like. We all have an idea of Augustus (..All my homies hate Augustus Moran) but fewer people talk on Moran's mother and I want Your opinion ? 💙 -B

I think I have referred to her in a few of my stories but essentially I believe that his mother was as much of a key influence on him as his father was, or maybe an even bigger influence. I think she is the one who encouraged him and nurtured his talents and tried to guide him to be a good person and she is the main reason that whatever he does and whatever he is capable of doing, he's still got his own sense of what is right and wrong and he still has lines he won't cross. But I also think unfortunately she died when he was a child so the loss of her has also influenced him too and caused him to 'go off the rails' slightly and engage in far more 'bad' behaviour but he's still retained a lot of what she taught him, both in terms of his sense of morality and him still being interested in things she taught him (in one of my stories it's playing the piano, I think she taught him to play the piano and he can still play it now. In the modern day AU novel I'm working on it's also her that gave him his love of horses and taught him to ride when he was a child). Also her death I think has affected him and made him even more repressed about a lot of his feelings and emotions, even in the modern day. I don't think he was ever allowed to properly grieve for her - he comes from an era or a class (or both) that basically expects him to maintain a 'stiff upper lip' and 'be a man' and not cry, not be overly emotional, yet he was devastated about losing his mother but he had to basically shove all that grief down inside him, and it has messed him up.

I do think it varies a bit depending on whether it's the Victorian era or the modern day because in the Victorian era she was probably much more pushed into a loveless marriage and trapped in that and little Sebastian was probably shaped a lot by the things he witnessed of that relationship, where his mother did have very little in the way of legal protection and no real way to escape the marriage. In the modern day with the changing position of women in more recent times then she was probably more likely to have genuinely loved Augustus once and I don't think he would really get away with treating her as badly as he may have done in the Victorian era but it was still not really ever a happy marriage and I think that is still one reason why Sebastian does hate and resent Augustus because he may not have been as physically abusive as the Victorian incarnation may have been but to Sebastian's eyes Augustus still betrayed his mother and he was still emotionally cruel towards her at the very least.

I also think his affection and respect for his mother has shaped Moran's overall attitude towards women and is probably a reason why he often tends to be friendly and even actually friends with women even when that's not really considered 'normal', especially in Victorian society (which was very homosocial) but also to some degree in the modern day too. I think Moran is bisexual and he has a high sex drive and he's had sex with plenty of women but he does see women as people not as sex objects and much of that does come from his regard for his mother. I do tend to have Moran being close friends with Kitty Winter and I see his willingness to be friends with her, a woman who is either going to be essentially viewed as a 'fallen woman' in the Victorian era or is pretty obviously a sex worker in the modern day, having a lot to do with his mother and her influence on him.

His mother is probably also a reason why even though Moran can be a very cynical person and in his younger days probably he scoffed at the idea of ever falling in love and wanting to settle down with someone and even though he saw his parents in a very unhappy marriage, he still believes in love and is capable of expressing his love (even if it's not always verbally) and still wants to be in a loving relationship with Moriarty, because he knows his mother did love him very much.

what is atrophy’s EDEN?

EDEN is less of a storyline than it is a universe for several gothic/Victorian characters to run around in. It’s a little like an AU, except it doesn’t strictly need to be defined as that bc all the characters involved are either original, used w/ permission, or in the public domain. it’s named as such because of a greenhouse of the roof of their little building, and because of the song From Eden by Hozier. there’s lots of Hozier influence in this.

it involves James (or ‘Jay’) Moriarty and their right hand man Sebastian Moran (both of whom you might know from the ACD Sherlock Holmes stories) assembling a team of criminals, dubbed “the EDEN project”, reverse league of extraordinary gentlemen style.

these criminals include:

ex-murderer and asylum escapee Edward Hyde, who was put into Bethlam after his trial for Henry Jekyll’s murder, where he failed to prove that he was, in fact, Dr. Jekyll himself.

perpetually suicidal and coincidentally unkillable Dorian Gray, who joins up because he has nothing better to do and promptly falls head over heels for the project’s coroner.

gentlemen thief and debonair master of disguise Arsène Lupin, who was only supposed to be in England long enough to rob the British Museum and stuck around because Moriarty had a better offer.

century-old force of nature and famed monster Adam Lucifer Frankenstein, who over the hundred-odd years he’s existed has rekindled a quiet (if distant) fascination with humanity.

depressed coroner Elijah Lijk, the world’s awkwardest man and master of uncomfortable staring, who is just here to get his paycheck pretty please.

& last but not least, freshly reanimated father of mad science and gothic lit’s own sopping wet cat Victor Frankenstein, who Adam brought back at Moriarty’s request (but mostly just to prove that he could.)

eden doesn’t have a specific time period— it’s actually built to house purposeful anachronisms (so while Arsène and Moran may have modern-day tactical equipment, Dorian still absolutely dresses like its both the 1880s and the 1920s simultaneously)

oh, also, versions of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, Gabriel John Utterson, Henry Clerval, Ganimard, Lestrade, Henry Wotton, Basil Hallward, Mycroft Holmes, Sybil Vane, the whole Frankenstein family, and several others have existed or do exist in this universe.
