In March 1981, RCA introduced SelectaVision VideoDisc. This analog videodisc basically played like a grooved vinyl record album, it used a needle and groove system.

I did see this one in the theatres, and it's exactly what it sounds like: The real Zorro briefly passes the mask to his gay son Ramon (a.k.a. Bunny Wiggleworth) who camps it up. 1981 movie on VideoDisc.
Technically untrue title since Zorro and his heir Don Diego use a sword while Bunny prefers to use a whip. As one could predict.

1982 Sony industrial-use laserdisc demo
This model player was mainly used at Ford dealers as well as Disney World. Laser rot on this disc gets worse towards the end.

SO JEALOUS OF YOUR MEDIA COLLECTION obsolete media formats georg over here!! question: do you know about videodisc/CEDs? i see them all the time and they're fascinating to me
Aw man, yeah. I wanted them SO BAD when they came out but my mother (quite indulgent towards my media pursuits) wasn't buying it, and I can't blame her. Regular LDs definitely looked to be the better technology (and in the end were) but at the start, the selection of titles in CED was massively superior to them (and even tapes at that time!).
So, I never got 'em. Though I do have two friends who did, and still have working players and BIG disc collections. Used to watch them with one friend, but rarely, as the discs do seriously wear out and one doesn't want to risk breaking the player by using it too much (I think most owners now have become skilled repairers of the touchy things)
A much-beloved and remembered piece of home video history!

An incredibly random thrift store find that I just couldn’t leave behind. No, I don’t have a player.

06/19/24: It's once again Wednesday and my fleamarket buys. A lot of stuff was a repeat of last week. So I didn't buy from them. But I did get stuff from other spots. My first buy was for $10; a Tiger Handheld LCD game, a DS game, and two graphic novels. Next place, I got a Samurai martial arts movie for a dollar. Last week I found a Muppets dvd and this week I found the rest of the series, plus a few others . I think I got someone else's Muppet collection now. The seller last week must have not brought out everything until today. I also got from him a mini wooden chest, a strategy guide for the game Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch, and a movie from a dead format. War Games on CED. The man also had more of these, but this movie was the only one that caught my attention. He had some late 70s early 80s movies. And some Roger Moore 007 ones. Maybe next week I'll get them. Anyway, total for all of it was $14.00. The last thing I bought looks decent, but has a defect. But for the price, I'll take it anyway. A red n64 controller for $5.00! It's got a few scuffs and scratches. But it's major flaw is its analog stick. It's quite bent. It's not completely broken and floppy, but it's shaft is bending in a weird way. But I'm still taking it, I'm fairly sure I can replace it. And so ends another week of fleamarket finds.

EPCOT Center's WorldKey Information System LaserDisc (1982)
WorldKey was a groundbreaking touchscreen digital information system created for EPCOT Center in 1982 by Bell Laboratories and Western Electric. WorldKey stations were featured at Spaceship Earth's Earth Station post-show area and at kiosks throughout the park. Video content highlighting the various pavilions was streamed over fiber optic cable from centrally located videodisc players, and guests could also connect via a live closed-circuit video system to Guest Relations hosts in order to make dining reservations or ask questions. The simple, touch-screen interface seemed sleek and futuristic, and was the first time that most EPCOT Center guests had probably experienced this now-commonplace technology. WorldKey utilized a high-tech combination of laserdisc technology, touchscreen monitors and computers. When making a selection, the laserdisc would 'jump' to another place on the disc, like skipping songs on a vinyl record or CD. The version presented here is the laserdisc played in a complete start-to-finish run (a method which guests would never see) and thus may seem to be a bit disorganized when presented in this manner. Because WorldKey utilized laserdisc technology, it became more difficult to update as EPCOT Center changed and expanded. Eventually, WorldKey's primary home at Earth Station would be removed for the AT&T Global Neighborhood in 1994 and the rest of the system was soon removed with it. Today, WorldKey is fondly remembered by those who experienced EPCOT Center's legendary first decades as an amazing hands-on, look at the technology of the future that is now commonplace in the reality of today.
