REC NOTES: This fic! Like I can’t even express all the wonderful words about this fic! First off, SIRIUS LIVES, which is actually the whole point of this rec, but this fic is pretty much everything. It’s based on 1990’s RomCom which is just the absolute best things ever. There is also a fox. Draco and Harry are adorable in this, and the Weasley family really shines through with all the love in this one. It’s just the most adorable thing even and I can’t help but fan girl so hard over this.

RHONJ Recrap - season 11, ep 1 - C U Next Tuesday!

Greetings fellow prostitution whores and welcome to my new weekly recrap of American institution The Real Housewives of New Jersey! Before I jump in I’ll introduce myself by saying that I’m a housewives super fan (I even watched DC, an experience I wouldn’t wish on my worst sister-in-law), an underemployed comedy writer (I can’t define “napalm” either, Lauren Manzo), and nothing makes me happier than to watch 6 bedazzled hypocrites in Cheesecake Factory mansions argue etiquette and loyalty between physical altercations in the world renowned cultural hub of Paterson, New Jersey. I know essay recaps are a bit of a relic but I am fond of ye olde written word so please enjoy this blast from the past, you scumbags!

We open without fanfare mid-scene to red-eyed Jackie and dead-eyed Teresa sitting in Margaret’s partially finished, wallpaper smothered home. We get the Bad Girls Club black-and-white flashes but unlike in Beverly Hills we’re not flashing to “three months earlier” but instead to “three days earlier.” It might take women of less gumption precious time to build to a production-halting confrontation but it only takes these agents of chaos half a week to get the meatball rolling.

Let’s back up a little to the ominous “three days prior” and catch up with our hot girls. It’s Jackie’s giant hot husband’s 46th birthday so she’s throwing him a party under a tent in the parking lot of a Greek restaurant. We learn that Teresa and Joe’s father has sadly passed in the offseason and Dolores Thee Stallion and Margaret have both had full cosmetic overhauls - Dolores with a second butt enhancement that left her with a giant hip scar rivaled only by Sally from Nightmare before Christmas and Margaret with a boob lift and apparent nipple sharpening (is that a procedure?) that she advertises in a blush silk top with no bra. Never one to be outdone at a parking lot birthday party, Joe Gorga arrives with his storyline - I mean wife, Melissa - also smuggling raisins under a skin tight children’s white T-shirt. Nipples are trending, ladies!

Margaret’s hot employee Lexi and Teresa’s hot realtor Michelle (both of whom are official friends-of this year), as well as iconic social wrecking ball and Aydin Center for Plastic Surgery mascot Jennifer all saunter in for car park cocktails at this 3D nipple fashion show and as the night devolves we see the cast getting truly shit-housed on shots when out of nowhere storyline sniper Teresa drops the bomb that she heard sexy birthday Bigfoot Evan is cheating on Jackie... more specifically, that he “does stuff” at the gym but mysteriously can’t remember any details or where she heard this head-scratching accusation that draws as many gasps as it does “huhs?” Honest straight people question: do y’all hook up at gyms? And if so, where? Are there co-ed saunas now? Also can one of you explain the allure of Mike and Molly to me? Moving on. Most shocking was that the Perez Hilton of North Jersey doesn’t just drop this wild accusation once, she gleefully skips through this asphalt soiree like a goddamn town crier, addressing everyone she passes like Belle through the town square.

The next day the hard partying crew of Jersey Shore: All Grown Up recovers from their throbbing hangovers and we see cool mom Melissa traipsing through her particle board mausoleum in see-through sweatpants with a visible thong in front of her kids’ friends (you girls keep me young!), Marge Sr. driving a blue Mini Cooper with eyelashes on the headlights (which I assume are like the spinning rims of the Jersey Grandma community), and a flashback of Margaret’s Joe puking next to a tree (relatable, my dude).

You girls keep me young!

Over at Jennifer’s palatial child farm we learn that her parents fight so much these days that she moved her father (Carl from Up!) to her multi-generational compound which has only angered her mother more.

We then find out Dolores’s dry boyfriend David with whom she shares the burning passion of a melting ice sculpture now lives with her bulging slab of a son Frankie Jr. in the house he and Delores built together but Dolores curiously still lives with her also bulging but slightly slimey ex Frank Sr. in her original house, a near Braunwyn-level web of over-explained but still vague relationship fuckery of which none of them seem on the same page. Dolores hid her surgery from David until the day before, David still works constantly so she hangs out with her ex all the time, and I can’t help but think that we aren’t getting the full story on whatever the fuck is happening under these two roofs. Are they brother-husbands? Is Frank Sr. piping both of them? Can Frankie Jr. DM me his nudes please? The only one being straight-forward in these duel households of confusion is Dolores’s dog who is simply named Dog and I honestly appreciate his refreshing transparency.

Finally, Jackie calls Teresa to organize an infamous Jersey sit-down because she somehow got wind of the out-of-thin-air accusations that Teresa all but presented with a bull horn and a PowerPoint at Evan’s parking lot social. They decide to meet at Margaret’s partially constructed house/ wallpaper showroom because it’s neutral territory to hash things out in a relaxing landscape of ladders and contrasting patterns and the tension is so thick you could cut it with one of Margaret’s newly renovated nipples.

Jackie pleads with Tre to clear her husband’s good name and Tre enters a baffling Kelly-Anne Conway bullshit loop which includes such hits as “woman to woman, if I heard this you wouldn’t want me to tell you?” (a reasonable point which is actually working against Teresa because it’s the opposite of what she did), then explaining to Margaret the immediately contradictory “I didn’t tell her and it’s not like I told Evan, I told my friends” (which is an explanation of what she obviously did wrong but said in the tone of a defense), the wacky last ditch nonsense deflection “Alright let me tell you the reason why I did it. This year, now, you know I’m single now. I’ve been approached by a lot of married men that think that it’s OK to have affairs,” and finally just saying fuck it and rewriting history “I did not spread a rumor, I heard a rumor.”

The truth is that Teresa was retaliating for a cheating rumor Jackie entertained about her last year but neither can be held to such unreasonable expectations like addressing reality or admitting fault which is actually ideal because if I cared to see emotionally mature community leaders converse thoughtfully I’d watch Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday not this unhinged turnpike circus.

Jackie’s rival won’t budge so she chooses the nuclear option, looks the reigning matriarch of Paterson in her vacant eyes, and declares confidently “I heard Gia snorts coke in the bathroom at parties” which stopped time on Earth as far as I’m concerned. Is this wild accusation true? Probably not. Was this retaliatory tit equal to the offending tat? Debatable. Do I blame Teresa for immediately whipping into a tailspin and storming out screaming the C-word (no Kathy Wakile, not “canoli kit”) at Jackie no less than 80 times? Girl, no I do not. Jackie has since clarified (backtracked?) that this was an analogy not a rumor she heard which... OK, and whether or not either of the atomic bombs dropped in this breakneck premiere were true, I’m excited to watch our Paterson superstars battle it out for another batshit season!

Frank Nelson was born on May 6, 1911 (three months before Lucille Ball) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He started working as a radio announcer at the age of 15. He later appeared on such popular radio shows as "The Great Gildersleeve," "Burns and Allen," and ''Fibber McGee & Molly". LUCY & FRANK: TV TIME...

Nelson appeared in 11 episodes of “I Love Lucy”, including three as quiz master Freddy Fillmore, and two as Ralph Ramsey, plus appearance on “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” - making him the only actor to play two different recurring roles on “I Love Lucy.”

Sharp-eyed viewers will notice that the quiz master’s first and last names are spelled differently over the course of the three episodes. Freddy v Freddie and Filmore v Fillmore. For the sake of this blog, we will stick with the more commonly seen “Freddy Fillmore”.

Lucy and Ethel then do a ‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ by sitting the unconscious talent scout upright on the sofa like nothing had happened. Ethel combs his hair, and for a few seconds puts the comb under his nose making the lifeless Benjamin looks exactly like Adolf Hitler although less cynical viewers claim it was Oliver Hardy.

“Ricky and Fred Are TV Fans” (ILL S2;E30) ~ June 22, 1953)

Sergeant Nelson of the NYPD mistakes Lucy and Ethel for Sticky Fingers Sal and Pickpocket Pearl!

“The Million-Dollar Idea” (ILL S3;E13) ~ January 11, 1954

Nelson plays another alliteratively-named TV host, Dickie Davis, who introduces Mary Margaret McMertz to sell Aunt Martha’s Old Fashioned Salad Dressing. To test the salad dressing, McMertz brings on an 'average housewife selected at random’: Lucy, calling herself Isabella Clump.

“The Great Train Robbery” (ILL S5;E5) ~ October 31, 1955

Nelson played a frazzled Union Pacific Train Conductor who must contend with Lucy’s tendency to pull the emergency break! Nelson first played this character on radio on “The Jack Benny Program.” He was generally teamed with Mel Blanc, who would do the station calls, although Blanc was not used here.

“Lucy Takes a Cruise To Havana” (LDCH S1;E1) ~ November 6, 1957

Nelson appears as the Cruise Director of the RMS Caronia in 1940 trying to get private secretaries Lucy McGillicuddy and Susie MacNamara (Ann Sothern) involved in something more than just finding a husband!

Nelson returned to the role of the frazzled Train Conductor for an episode of “The Lucy Show” in 1963. This marks his final appearance on a Lucille Ball sitcom.

“Jack Benny’s New Look” ~ December 3, 1969

Nelson plays a Camera Store Clerk who (conveniently) demonstrates the sponsor’s product, Kodak Cameras. He does not share the stage with Lucille Ball, who only momentarily appears at the very end of the special as herself.

“Jack Benny’s 20th Anniversary Special” ~ November 16, 1970

Nelson plays an Airport Ticket Clerk who naturally greets Jack Benny with his trademark “Yeeeeeeeeees?” Lucille Ball does not appear in this sketch. She plays Benny’s maid in another sketch on the program.

In “The Handcuffs” (ILL S2;E4) Ricky is interviewed and introduced by Veola Vonn. In real-life, Vonn was married to Frank Nelson from 1970 until his death in 1986.

In “Ethel’s Birthday” (ILL S4;E9) Mary Lansing provided the offstage voice of Cynthia in “Over the Teacups”. Lansing was Nelson’s first wife, marrying him in 1933 and with whom he had two children.

The Evolution of the Smart Girl on Screen

We all are familiar with the smart girl trope – think Hermione Granger from Harry Potter or Jo from the more recent movie, Little Women. But the smart girl always depends on her era, what it means to be smart at the time, and what kind of values society holds dear in its women. This women’s day, here’s a lookout for the development of the Smart Girl character in TV and Movies through the ages!

As early as the 1930s, the Smart Girl featured in witball comedies like Theodora Goes Wild (1938) alongside dominant male leads. Here the Smart Girl mirrors the male characters to hold her own, because brains = masculine, and she’s an exception.

Enter the 1940s and 50s with Film Noir: Here, the smart woman was the femme fatale as in Double Indemnity (1944), who uses her feminine charms and intelligence to lure men down a dark path, implying that there was something dangerous about smart, assertive women.

Well, ofcourse – this was a time before the Women’s Movement took hold in the US in the 1960s and 70s, when women were still overwhelmingly and conventionally considered secondary and accessory to men. But this is not to say that there were no smart women back in the day. Today’s Smart Girl trope finds some positive ancestors in characters such as Nancy Drew from Nancy Drew, Trouble Shooter 1939). Over the years, Nancy Drew was joined by many sharp girl detectives, such as Velma from Scooby Doo (but she was overshadowed by the attractive Daphne – more on that later!)

It was in the 1980s and 90s, after the Women’s Movement for equal rights in America, that the Smart Girl trope rose to popularity as we know it – and it has evolved a lot since then, too!

Smart Girls in the 80s – like Carol from Growing Pains and Jesse from Saved by the Bell – were a response to the 80s teen movies’ glorification of the male nerd character type. Some, like Andie from Pretty in Pink (1986) were both smart and femininely well put-together (pretty – in pink!). However, they were not explicitly valued for their academic prowess. In fact, when The Breakfast Club (1985) dissected the high school class system, the girls were either a princess

or a basket case

...while the smart one was a boy. These empowered female characters owned their mental superiority and asserted their academic merit but were almost always clumsy and bespectacled like Velma.

It was in 1989 with the movie Say Anything that a Teen Movie featured a smart girl who was also the conventional romantic lead – behold Valedictorian Diane Court!

But in the 80s, the Smart Girl was still a trope laden with classic trope-yness: from the 80s onwards, as women became more dominant in the workforce. Thus, while career ambition became a staple of the Smart Girl trope in the 80s, it came at a price: the smart girl, like Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons, would almost always be a perfectionist – trying so hard to be perfect that she’d crack under pressure. That’s because women still had to compete fiercely with the men in the workforce, because men had strength in numbers and were better preferred. Thus, even in 1993, in shows like Boy Meets World, the Smart Girl came with an obsessive competitive streak, which was often plain annoying.

In the 1990s, with the onset of Third Wave Feminism and the Riot Grrrl movement, teens and women were encouraged to advocate for rights over their lives and bodies, and to point put systemic oppression of and prejudice against women. Thus, characters like Daria Morgendorfer came to the fore, who were smart, bookish, cynical, and not afraid of questioning authority and reveling in their smartness.

The characters around this time also became more multidimensional, not defined merely by their bookishness: while Jane Lane from Daria and Haley from One Tree Hill had a creative streak, characters like Betty Cooper (Riverdale) took on athletic prowess too!

In 2000, Gilmore Girls gave us 2 contrasting types of the Smart Girl trope: the sweet, perfect Rory, who had her mind set on going to Harvard,

and Paris, with her Type A personality and Straight A record, who would step on anyone and anything to stay on top.

But slowly also came characters who would accept their occasional fault or defeat and grow into a more self-assure, mature individual – welcome Hermione Granger!

But like Hermione with Cho and Fleur at the Yule Ball, the brainy girl was still in the shadow of the Cool Girl, who was conventionally pretty – every Velma had to have their Daphne! Slowly, from Beauty and Brains being a limiting, either/ or situation for female characters, shows such as Legally Blonde brought out women’s ability to do both to the screen, and with shows like Oceans 8 with its Black Nerd Girl character, the Smart Girl became more diverse.

Finally, with Booksmart (2019)’s Molly, who sees that popular kids are also going to Ivy League Colleges, the Smart Girl’s uniqueness is no longer limited to bookishness, social isolation, romantic unfitness or the like – it has been declared that there is no one size to fit all smart girls!

It can really be said that now, the Smart Girl trope has begun to break out of its trope-yness. Women can truly be themselves – even on screen!

Character Profile: Eileen Ramsey (Nèe Prewett)

Biography:

Eileen is the younger sister of Molly Weasley (Nee Prewett), Gideon, and Fabian. She was always quite bright and a deeply caring individual. She was the youngest of the Prewett family, and so at times it seemed like she was the most favorited by her brothers, and her parents. That was… until she was sorted into Slytherin.

The Prewett family was deeply superstitious when it came to the house of the snake, especially when one of their own was sorted into it. Believing this was destined to make her a dark witch. Something, most people wouldn’t be able to believe if they had talked for more than two minutes to talk with her.

This didn’t matter, especially to the parents. Eileen became a stranger in her own home to everyone except her twin brothers. They remained somewhat distant but still showed protective qualities to her throughout the years.

During her time at Hogwarts Eileen was bullied by her fellow housemates (and the Marauders), including one Malcolm Ramsey. Ramsey bullied Eileen until halfway through her second year when she hexed him with the langlock hex followed quickly by the babbling curse in their dueling club (hello bitten tongue). He no longer bullied, nor really interacted with her much after that until her sixth, and his seventh year.

In her sixth year, Eileen gained some respect in her house after taking down Rabastan Lestrange in a duel, followed a month or so later by one of the Mulciber family. This was brought on by them bullying her and Eileen having enough. Of course, this was also the year in which she befriended Regulus Black. Someone that encouraged her to fight back. Later accompanied, by Ramsey.

Unknown to her, her brother Fabian had one Miss Maureen Fawley follow around Eileen and keep tabs on her to ensure no odd romance blossomed with Regulus Black. Unforeseen was her budding romance between Eileen and Ramsey, who seemed to slip by under their radar. Easy for Ramsey to do considering he was a prefect until he lost his badge in the fall of 1976. They began dating on November 9

of 1976.

Malcolm ‘Mal’ Ramsey:

She finished schooling at Hogwarts in 1978. Eileen married Malcolm in 1979 on October 31st. Sometime between her graduation and her nuptials she was forced into becoming a death eater at the sake of her loved ones. She did feed information to her brothers as best as she could when it reached her. Such as Regulus confiding in her that Voldemort was using horcruxes and he had found one. Surrounded by water, and Regulus couldn’t swim. She tried to tell her brothers and the Order to get there before Regulus had to. She knew he couldn’t swim and was terrified to lose him. So, when Regulus set out and with no word from the Order, she accompanied him. She forced him to finish the Emerald Potion (Drink of Despair) and was incredibly proud when he went to change the lockets. She was preparing to leave the cave along with Kreacher when Regulus stooped over to get a drink of the water and was pulled in by the Inferi. Eileen tried to save him but was unsuccessful. Only being saved by Kreacher urging her to leave with him as it would have been what ‘Master Regulus’ would have wanted. She went home that night incredibly shaken, hollow, and broken. She blamed the order for his death. Because he wasn’t considered a ‘good man’ in their eyes she felt like they left him to die. Sirius Black blamed her for his brother’s death. Despite not being over her friend’s death her life went on and continued to the day of her wedding. She was ecstatic on her wedding day even though Regulus was supposed to walk her down the aisle. She held a small portrait of him in the bouquet, so he was still able to walk her down the aisle. Had Regulus still been alive he would have been named the godfather of Eileen’s children. For a time between the first and second wizarding wars Malcolm and Eileen were happy and content with their lives. The couple welcomed their daughter, Ophelia Maureen Acturus Ramsey, was born on May 2nd, 1982. Originally a surprise to both her parents but nothing short of a blessing to them both. Later they adopted the bastard son of Rabastan Lestrange, Lucifer, in 1991. Lucifer having been abandoned due to his half-blood status. Eileen worked as a writer after the first war through to the second war as Malcolm worked for the ministry as a curse breaker. Her books were works of fiction for children inspired by the ‘Rambunctious’ adventures of her husband. Often causing her husband to be mobbed by children when they were out in Diagon Alley. Sadly, the Ramsey children were left orphaned as both Eileen and Malcolm perished during the second war. Some of Eileen’s last words were a question, asking if Regulus would be proud of her. When her eyes closed for the last time they closed in Hogwarts, and when she opened them, she was greeted with Regulus looking down on her: “About time, Prewett.”

Welcoming the New Guys

Katherine sat at her desk staring at the couple before her. The look of disgust in her mud brown eyes couldn’t have been stronger. Her oak-colored hair was pulled back into a stiff tight bun and not a single hair was out of place. Her pursed lips were highlighted in a nauseatingly pink lipstick that while complementing her blush and liner was applied way to heavily. She wore a light blue business suit whose tight pencil skirt somehow managed to be professional, feminine and double as a restraint at the same time. Her silver heels were about three inches long and pencil thin. Somehow she managed to sit crossed legged in the pink low back chair as she studied the screen before her. Her hands clutching the golden cross on her necklace.

“I see,” she said her voice a judgemental chirp. “According to our records, you served three months in Saint Margarets prison rehab.” The couple across from her shifted uncomfortably.

“Yes.” The smaller of the two squeaked. Her partner put a supportive hand on her shoulder. This wasn’t the first time the two women had to face a sex counselor. It was just a fact of living in this day and age. The smaller woman was dressed like a plaid watermelon. She wore a pair of light green sneakers, pink and green plaid pants, a pink long-sleeved shirt and a pink and green plaid vest. Her hair was in a pixie cut and currently dyed lime green. Her liquid honey eyes watched the counselor's pink manicured nails twist the cross around.

“I see so this is the second time then for both of you. I assume at this point you are aware that same-sex relationships outside of an approved sanctuary is against the law of our Lord.” She turned toward the larger female. Dressed head to toe in black, leather and spikes she had the air of someone who couldn’t care less about her opinion and the build of a marine.

The two females looked at each other. Neither had told their parents yet but this was their third strike. They nodded in agreement it was time. So long outside world, hello prison.

“Good then. Here is a list of approved Sanctuaries in your area. Honestly, I recommend Peter’s Palace but it’s your choice. Choose wisely cause it’s your final one.” She handed them a sheet of paper that had three names on it. “Or if you are up to moving here is your login code for the country database.” She scribbled down a collection of barely legible letters and handed them the paper.

“Good luck ladies.” her voice was anything but reassuring.

Skye was waiting outside the main gate of the Rainbow Road Sanctuary. When she asked Nat to redesign the old cast iron gate this isn’t what she had in mind. Sure the old version was more “Alcatraz chic” but this wasn’t much better.

“Umm Nat I’m not one to judge but what is this?” She looked at the colorful chaos before her. “Is that a unicorn?”

“Honey it just screams open-mindedness.” He clapped his hands together and looked at her with those puppy dog eyes.

“It’s screaming alright just not sure what exactly.” King walked over careful to stay on the rainbow brick driveway. He was wearing his usual black leather speedo thing and spiked black harness, a leather whip was strapped to his side.

“Hey, at least I included your kink in my fabulous mural. Although Sister Margaret was happy since she thought you were the devil punishing a drag queen.” He pointed over towards a section showing a monkey in bondage gear chasing a peacock. “Cause we all know you are so into the Painted Peacock owner.”

“Nat lay off of king, please. King, you need to get to work. I need to get to the main office and Nat please ensure everyone is on their best behavior today we have a pair of lovely ladies taking a tour today. They are checking out Randy’s Rodeo first so make sure your mom is in her office in about an hour.” She took one last look at the newly painted front gate. The old cast iron was now a bright golden color. A large rainbow featured a variety of animals real and mythical making their way down it toting their respective flags being led by a fabulous unicorn. Yep, that’s Nat for you, never what you want but probably what you need.

Laughing she made her way up the quarter-mile long driveway. He even painted the brick road leading up to the main clubhouse. Wait, she stopped to double check it. Nope, not painted. He actually located someone who makes colored bricks and redid the entire driveway. Well, now it’s an actual rainbow road. Hopping into the sole method of travel inside its gates she started the electric golf cart and scooted off.

The main clubhouse was a two-story brick building. The first floor served as her office, the main gathering hall, housed the indoor heated pool and where they hosted amateur drag shows on the last Saturday of every month. The second floor was where Skye, her two sisters, Rose and Raine, and their mom Pheonix lived.

When you first walk in it opens into what most people describe as a giant living room. The entire place was decorated in caribbean pastels. Sky blue walls with beach and forest murals gave it an open feel. Light grass green tile could be found throughout. Wooden benches were placed around a fireplace instead of sofas. Some were decorated with faux moss and fungus.

It looked like a scene from a kids book. Nat’s great-grandfather was inspired by a camping trip he took to Long Key State Park back in 2095. He was commissioned to design the place two years later by Solar Hellion Skye’s grandfather. He jumped all over the opportunity to build a place where he and his partner could live in peace.

Heading to the right and down the hall lined with mushroom lamps takes you to the bathroom/changing rooms and indoor Pool. It looked like the mermaid’s grotto from the Peter Pan movie. Faux willow branches hung from parts of the ceiling as carved trunks doubled as a towel rack. In the center of the pool sat a fountain in the form of a mermaid bathing under a waterfall. Yeah, extravagance runs in his genetics.

The true gem, however, was on the other side of the sliding doors that doubled as walls in the pool room. On warm sunny days like these, they are left open creating the illusion of a never-ending room. They opened onto a large stone patio that housed a giant summer kitchen featuring three large grills, one smoker, and a three compartment sink. A mini fridge and chest freezer stored in the indoor common room could be moved outside during special events.

Heading to the left from the living room took you to the common space. A two-story cafe that held a stage used for everything from kid plays to amateur drag shows. Every Saturday they have comedy night and Sunday is half price drinks. Raine had overseen six weddings there so far and a seventh was planned in the fall. The old wood furnishings and fake birds gave it a strange beachy feel that many found comforting. At the far end was the stairs to the second tier.

Heading straight through that first room led to the offices and stairway to the second story. She headed upstairs to change into her work clothes. The ladies would be here any moment and she wanted to make a good impression.

Once changed Skye headed back to the main gate. It was 7pm and they’d be here any second. Sure enough, a bus from Saint Pauls Retrainers pulled up. Out stepped two women. One obviously distressed, the other on the verge of murder.

The upset one was very pixie like, dressed in an ankle length lime green dress and her, also lime, hair pulled back into a bun. She also wore a pair of silver heels she obviously wasn’t used to and a green sweater. Her eyes were red and puffy obviously from crying so much. No doubt Sharon was their counselor.

The other one however was dressed in a similar get up only with purple hair and a black dress. She was much taller than the other and built like a bear. A silver bracelet on her left wrist told Skye all she needed to know. Her and this woman would get along well.

“As you can guess our gate says it all but if you have any questions I’ll be happy to help.” She gestured toward the rainbow monstrosity behind her. Yeah thank Nat for his in your face style.

The small one looked up and gasped. Surely this couldn’t be true. The others said this place was a living hell. There is no way a sanctuary could actually be a safe haven. The taller one went from murder from pure amusement.

“So this is what Catholic hell looks like.” her tone seemed overly cautious. “What’s it called?”

“Yeah we’ve been called that before.” Skye laughed. “Unofficially, Dear Gods Why Nat Why You Know Sharon is Going to Call the Cops Again. But they call it Open Mindedness”.

“They?” the smaller one asked.

“Yeah Nat is asexual and a gender fluid hermaphrodite. If you ask depending on the day it’s short for Nathaniel and others it’s short for Natasha. When they leave Nat prefers he because men have more freedom. Nat is also our resident artist and does most of the detail work around here.”

“And you just accept this. No trying to change us or fix us.” They asked in unison. Skye motioned for them to step onto the first row of rainbow colored bricks. The bus took off leaving them in peace. Once they were further from the road she answered.

“Rainbow Road doesn’t work like most places do. It’d be easier for me to show you because as you’ve seen words are hollow.”

“Alright we’ll give it a shot. I’m Molly and this is my partner Isabell.” The one in black responded.

“I’m Skye and this place was started by my grandfather so he, his wife and his sisters in law could live in peace. We are an open minded group all we ask is that everyone is of age, consenting, no one comes to harm and that it be done in the designated areas. I know the last ones weird but we accept ALL KINDS here.” They pulled up to the main club house. She ran in only to come out a few seconds later.

“It’s early so I need my keys. We are an actual sanctuary so you will see a lot of people who don’t live here on property. This allows those stuck in the “Real” world a chance to escape. The property Itself is broken into two areas. The common ground which is an LGBTQ+ safe space featuring clubs, bars, cafes, gyms and other locations for people to gather and chill. It also has grocery stores and shops since some residents aren’t allowed or don’t feel safe leaving.” She gestured toward the right where they passed a small produce stand and florist.

“Not allowed to leave?” Isabell whispered her voice shaking.

“Yes those who have four plus strikes are banned from polite society” Skye scoffed “unless escorted by a member of the Good Church. Anything they can’t get in here me or Rose will do runs once a week to pick up. This includes medicines and other specialty items. We are hoping to get a few pharmacists, doctors and surgeons in so we can set up a clinic. But until then those who need them must leave which is why even here some things are frowned upon.” She explained.

“Ah so that’s how it’s done. Sorry but me and my girl are one of those banned pairs unless we get three or more months of counseling.” Molly admitted.

“Is cool I’m actually taking you to Nat’s mom Charlene. She is the resident psychologist and proud supporter of pet play, if you know what that is.” Her tone was pretty upbeat.

“Okay then. What’s the second area?” Molly asked.

“Second area is residential. Residents are divided by, what we call, their kink though you’d know it as their mental problem. Back to your earlier question, no we don’t try to fix you because you aren’t broken. We provide a space, or rather spaces, for you to do you.” She pulled up to a restaurant called the Pan Pan. Pulling out her keys she unlocked the door.

“I don’t know about you but it’s like 7:30 am and I haven’t had breakfast. You hungry.” She motioned for them to step inside. “I’ve heard that Saint Pauls Retrainers are big on withholding if you don’t meet their standards. Your hair is stunning so I’m thinking you haven’t eaten in a few days.” She watched Isabell nod slowly as she studied the menu. Molly was a little more hesitant. She was going to need a few weeks.

“One moment. Hey Rose, Laura, Fred I need you guys.” She called toward the kitchen. Three females popped their heads from behind a door. The shortest and roundest of the three came running over to hug her. Her hair was black and done up into two little buns at the top. Blue eyes shined with mischief as a cockeyed smile danced on her lips. Her uniform was a black knee length fluffy dress with a white apron that ended at her thigh. With it was a pair of black leggings and steel-toed non-slip boots. The other two had similar hairstyles but with black pants and long sleeved shirts and white vests. All in all they looked like pandas.

“Molly, Isabell this is my sister Rose and her partners Laura and Fred. Fred is male but the queen around here. Rose can make us a lovely breakfast before you open. These lovely ladies are thinking about moving here from Saint Pauls Retrainers in GA.”

Rose took one look at the girls turned and drug her two accomplices into the kitchen. Their was the faint sound of excited squeaking, the clash of pans, a few slaps and an army of kitchen timers. Around half an hour later they returned with enough food for eight people.

“We got excited,” Fred said sheepishly. The six then sat down at one of the larger tables to eat. A Lot of what was on the table wasn’t on the menu. There were pancakes, sausage, biscuits, eggs both fried and scrambled, bacon, omelets and cereal. Oh and waffles, lots of waffles.

“So what brings you down here.” laura said in her best attempt at a southern drawl. Like Rose, her hair was black and in bear ears but originally it was a deep pine brown. Her amber eyes studied the pair cautiously.

“Same as most people I guess, fell in love with the WRONG person.” The wrong was put in air quotations. Isabell snorted in response which only got a light chuckle from Molly.

“If you don’t mind my asking..” Fred’s voice was hesitant. “..what about your parents?” He looked prepared to slip under the table and run. Rose and Laura traded concerned looks. They both knew his history, good and bad. It was Howl who spoke.

“Fred never really came out. They found out the first day they visited him here. Long story short I threw them and a brother off of a second story balcony. His other brother, Reese was cool about it. Gave me my first three dings and thanked me cause if I hadn’t he would’ve. Now he always wonders if that’s a normal thing.” She picked up bagel as sho spoke casually showing off a silver bracelet.

“Ha, same here except I punched both my dad and hers in the face. I could handle them attacking me but not my honey bunny.” Molly showed the two grooves on hers. After breakfast, the three left leaving Nami and crew to clean up.

They stopped by Sense8 where Queenie, King and Doggo were currently passed out in a bed hosting some plushy ties. Howl noped out of that one pretty quickly. Instead they headed to the painted Peacock. Vainglorious was cleaning up after the last few stragglers. They traded some greetings but for the most part he was busy wiping down tables.

After that a tour of the private residences. Their apartment was located on Pride way. Most were two story townhomes with screened in porches on both levels. Isabel was excited about the rooftop deck which had plenty of room for gardening. It was a two bedroom one and a half bath place with a large kitchen. The Patios overlooked the Neptuna lake.

After approving the apartment they headed to a pastel blue house on Ally way. Charlene and Nat were waiting in the living room with cookies. Howl introduced them, grabbed Nat and left them to their first session.

Charlene was a tiny pixie of a woman. Her hair was curly and red and eyes greener then new spring leaves. Her skin was pale but covered in freckles. She wore a patchwork floral dress and no shoes. She smiled revealing crooked white teeth. She motioned for them to sit.

“Now I know your counseling sessions have been way different in the past. So today I’m here to answer any questions you have about our community.” She took a drink from her cup and set it on a paint splattered table.

An hour later Howl came back and heard the three laughing. She knocked lightly on the open door and walked in. She immediately regretted it.

“That’s whenever Samuel showed up. She was holding this guy by his ankles from the balcony as her mom chanted drop him drop him, from below. I had to subdue Pheonix as Sam ran upstairs to wrangle the guy from her grasp. He barely managed to to but the damage was done. The cop who showed up, Officer Reeves, gave her the silver bracelet.”

“Am I intruding Ladies.” She said with a smile. They nodded no, barely stifling their laughter.

“Will you be staying with us?” she asked. They nodded yes the occasional giggle slipping through. “ Good then, Welcome Home.”

Self-Isolating With Friends: 11 Best Movies to Watch During Quarantine

With the state of the world these days. Making it even easier are programs like Zoom, the digital meeting application, that allows for any number of people to interact with both voice and video at the same time. So even if you aren't with them in person you and all your friends can have a virtual movie night! With no limit to how many can partake in the fun, because we all know how much of a bummer it is being the one that has to sit on the floor. You've already brought your friends, now we'll tell you what the best movies to watch with friends are. Teamwork!

Lights. Camera. Action

Depending on the tastes of who is in charge of movie night there is a great selection of movies to watch with friends, no doubt something for everyone. It is probably unlikely that something too serious or too depressing will want to be chosen though. Movie night should be an escape, something we enjoy, not something to remind us of the stress we are going through! Taking Time to Feel Good and Laugh it Off 1. Mid90s: Made in 2018 this is a total love-note to the 90s, hence the name. It is a coming of age film set in skateboard culture. The forming of self-identity and what forms who we are is quickly established here. It would be a great choice as a sort of unifying throwback film. While not all of your friends may be skaters the culture of the 90s is something that would be reminisced about. Not fully comedic but not fully heavy drama. It's a time that everyone will recognize in their own lives. The vibe can recall "Kids" from 1995 but is nowhere near as explicit. 2. Evil Dead 2: This will top the list regardless of how many years pass since its release. There is no requirement of watching the first and there is no concern should any of the bunch be particularly worried about a scare. This film is what camp films aspire to be but can never achieve. Sam Raimi basically invented the game here with Bruce Campbell. Simply put, the main character Ash has traveled with his girlfriend to a cabin. When there he discovers an audiotape with recordings from a book of ancient texts. He plays the tape and it unleashes a number of demons that torment him. Don't worry, it's intentionally hilarious. 3. Isn't It Romantic: This film has nearly every single Romantic Comedy trope that that genre could throw at you, somewhere in it. It is a satirical film that is making fun of that genre while still kind of being one at the same time. Great watch when you need a feel-good movie that isn't too overly cheesy. Rebel Wilson as the lead was made for the undervalued Architect that eventually comes into her own by the end of the movie. It's one of the roles that feel weird if someone else would have been in it now that you have watched it cast the way it was. Recommend it, especially if you are a person that isn't afraid to laugh at yourself and your tastes sometimes. 4. What We Do in the Shadows: Before there was the tv series on FX there was a film directed by the immensely talented director Taika Waititi. While we are distancing ourselves at these times, these characters are coming together. For those unfamiliar, it is a "reality" documentary about four vampires from different areas and different eras coming together to live in a home on Staten Island. If they can come together and live in unity we certainly can! The mockumentary style ends up being very quotable and perfect for a group of friends to share with each other and in a movie night setting. We Aren't (Actually) Alone. 5. Castaway: You know, even Tom Hanks had to deal with a form of social distancing or isolation of his own kind and all he had was a volleyball named Wilson. He overcame that challenge and was stronger for it. A movie like this can remind us that even when we feel most alone we can still find it in ourselves to be our strongest and make it through a hard time. Plus, who doesn't love Tom Hanks! 6. The Revenant: When you have the film that Leonardo DiCaprio finally achieved his oscar for, you know that it is a winner. This film speaks to the emptiness much like the selection below, "I Am Legend". Survival after an event, leaving us worn and ravaged. Sometimes this is literal, in the physical sense and sometimes it is figurative in the emotional sense. Hugh Glass (Leo) had more of the physical but who is to say his tundra isn't our empty streets. 7. I Am Legend: Another beloved name staring here, Will Smith. He is a scientist that is the lone survivor of a man-made plague, turning humans into mutants. He lives in and wanders New York City hoping to find other possible survivors. As he is immune to the plague he has been working on a cure for the disease. There are parallels for the time we are living in although a much scarier situation. But we can see how he, again, deals with isolation. Watching Will Smith live in that type of environment, expressing how it really feels being that alone is almost therapeutic. With the added benefit of being a great sci-fi movie (based off a great book!)

A Themed Night of the Best Movies to Watch With Friends

Make a game out of it or even better a theme out of it! Movie marathons are great too. But the fun of making up a theme or finding ways to make it into a game adds another layer to the mix. A great example would be "Comic Book Movies". These days the comic book hero movie have become less the outlier and more really fun movies to watch with friends. Another direction to go would be a time period like: Welcome to The 80s John Hughes was the king of the 80s. His films are clearly products of the 80s yet have a charm that has aged well. Dedicate a night to that charm, showing that movies both new and old make great viewing parties. 8. Sixteen Candles: Let's be honest, can there be an 80s night without Sixteen Candles? I suppose it could be possible if it were swapped for Pretty in Pink. 9 out of 10 times this is the first movie that comes to mind when John Hughes is mentioned. The coming of age comedy featuring Molly Ringwald another member of 80s royalty. As a teen dreading her 16th birthday and the standard social anxieties already coming with highschool. Having to deal with the romantic interests of one boy she is interested in and rejecting another (typical nerd!) she wants nothing to do with. 9. Breakfast Club 10. Ferris Bueller's Day Off: Another of the universally loved greats of the 80s. So much so that the National Film Registry selected it for preservation because it was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." 11. Planes Trains and Automobiles: The end of the list and towards the end of the section, Planes Trains and Automobiles is a buddy film on the road. Two comedy legends, Steve Martin and John Candy play the lead roles. The two cross paths multiple times while traveling, with their problems starting on a flight going from LaGuardia to O'Hare. Chaos ensues from there as Neal Page, Steve Martins character, stresses about the need to get home for Thanksgiving. Making the story as enjoyable as it is are the stark differences in their personalities. Steve Martin the caricature of the uptight executive and John Candy the good-hearted but loud and jovial salesman. There had to be at least one non-John Hughes on the list, to be fair!

At this point, everyone has heard of Netflix. But just because it is a household name doesn't mean it is your only option! Take a look at all of these great options. Janine Rinker emailed: “Hi Marc, I started looking for celtic music online because my philosophy professor claimed that Irish music is mainly drinking and fighting songs (it isn't all...). Anyway, after listening to the same songs by the same groups several times I got the idea of just skipping several pages of search and found your music.

I generally listen to your pubsongs podcast when I'm typing homework of some sort (I'm an adjunct professor at a community college, and something of a chronic student), although sometimes I'm playing games on Facebook instead. You've gotten my family watching Firefly, and I gave some of your CD's as a Christmas gift to a friend who likes cats, but doesn't have any of her own anymore. Thanks for the bonus Christmas CD's you sent.

If you're not familiar with them, let me suggest Woods Tea Company and Cahill Dunne as other groups whose music you might want to play. Both have some songs where the audience is encouraged to sing the chorus. Woods Tea Company has a variety of songs, but "This Side of the Sea" is an album specifically of Irish music. Cahill Dunne is an Irishman who married an American. He plays piano, and sings a variety of styles of music, including traditional Irish, comedy and Western songs.

I really enjoy the variety of music on your podcast and listening to your adventures.”

James H. emailed: "Hi Marc –Thanks for sending me the freebies! I’m listening to Star of County Down, but not sure how to download the songs. I can usually right click and “Save Target As”, however, that’s only saving the HTM (file location). Is it only intended to listen on my computer?

We live in Modesto California. We’re Christian Baptists and our church is in Stockton.

I found you through my android podcast player, although most of my regular podcasts are on my iPhone. I like to bring my tablet (android) on long trips to visit my daughters in college in Southern California.

My wife and daughters all play violin and my daughters played (still one daughter in it) the Modesto Youth Symphony Orchestra; they have played concerts in Canada, Austria and Czech Republic. My oldest LOVES anything Celtic and would probably want to live in Ireland.

My dad’s side of the family is from County Cork and Clare County. My mom’s side came over on the Mayflower.

Allan Marcotte emailed: “Marc,I heard you singing Kilty Pleasure about taking pride in your Scottish heritage and wearing of the kilt. I am not of Scot or Irish descent but the song spoke to me. My Dad was an American of French Canadian extraction but my Mom was German from the old country, she came to this country about 4 years before I was born. Growing up I was aware of my French Canadian heritage but I was very aware my German heritage. I listened to traditional German music and still do though I don't speak the lingo and understand all the songs. My diet is heavily influenced by German cooking, I even make my own sauerkraut from scratch. It becomes very prominent at Christmas, the tradition of celebrating Advent, the visit from St Niklaus on 6 December and to me there is nothing prettier than Silent Night sung in German. Looking forward to the new album.”
