the dredge dlc is pretty underwhelming...

rambling, spoilers for dredge and the pale reach dlc below

it just kind of feels... pointless, in a sense? i won't call it a mistake or anything, but it's awkward to shove it into the og game since everything in the story ties perfectly together. this might just be because i've only watched playthroughs of the game, but i think that the only thing the player gets out of the dlc is a new net and a small mechanic that keeps fish from spoiling. it's nice but unneeded... pretty much like this dlc.

1) the dlc is just too small

to quote/steal/paraphrase a youtube comment i saw - "this dlc feels 70% free". and yeah, i agree. ONE new island, with ONE new quest line/story, and ONE new enemy. i get that they gotta make it feel like just another part of the og dredge, but there's just too little going on. simple things like a couple more characters and places would be worth it.

2) the story... lmao

dredge stands out to me among other similar games because you're directly part of the story, but not in the "outsider who comes in to makes things right" way. you, the fisherman, is (unknowingly, bc of the amnesia) coming back to make things right. or worse, depending on your choices. but with the pale reach, you just become the outsider story thing. and that really kills the vibes for me.

3) narwhal narwhal swimming through the ocean (ice) causing a commotion for no damn reason

what is the point of the narwhal. it's the only new enemy and it gets set up as a big mystery only for it to just eat your fish, clear some ice, and chase you. ok

i just exptected it to be way more important? like maybe you were going to try and take pictures of it since the photographer left (which, btw, she should've been a character to come back to), but trying to do so leads you down a lovecraft path and you learn what happened to the crew. granted that's the outsider story i just frowned upon earlier, but that's way more fun that just reading some journals and breaking chunks of ice four times to get a shiny anchor. speaking of, what was that four eyed giant ice narwhal thing??? i am. so confused

if i were to play dredge for myself, i don't think i would buy the dlc unless i really really wanted 100% on the fish and stuff. the pale reach is fine, but not that worth it.
