Thoughts and Reaction to OPTIGAMI!!

I have never been so nervous and scream so much during an episode of this show before. And if you know me, that's saying something. Gabriel and Nathalie are getting seriously scary. Their plans are getting much more convoluted and are getting closer and closer to actually succeeding. And because of this, Alya's involvement is a lot more important now because there's no way Chat Noir and Ladybug would have managed it without her. Let's be real, the reason they chose Nino as their target was because Gabriel's still bitter about Adrien and Nino being friends after Bubbler. Awww all the Kwami's are so cute, wanting to go along. Trixx being like, oh well I have an owner so I can go! And Marinette being adamantly against it. It was at this moment I knew, Alya's getting that Miraculous permanently. But I didn't know if it'd be in this episode or not, so I didn't get too excited yet. But Trixx and Alya's bond is something I really like and want to see more of. Nino and Alya's little high-five/handshake is so cute I can't help but smile every time. x3

Marinette's freak-out about getting in the elevator. Luka's got a soft look on his face. Kagami's like "why are you like this" Max's just confused at what's going on AND THEN THERE'S ADRIEN WITH THE SOFTEST LOOK When you realize that Marinette adoringly (and appeared like she wishes she could have that, too) watching Alya and Nino do their little high-five/handshake is what saved everything in the end.....😬Cutting it really close. I thought Alec got trapped by Hawk Moth and that that's why he didn't show up. Who knew he was playing video games in a bathroom stall instead of doing his job lol. Lesson learned, I hope. xD I'm just surprised Hawk Moth's in the bathroom instead of his lair. He could do the same thing from home. 😂 I'm not a fan of Audrey, but that was really cold. The exchange between Marinette and Alya during an akuma attack is what I've been waiting for since Gang of Secrets. Adrien being wonderful and protecting Chloe, which could've messed up everything had Kagami not saved him. It's so sweet that despite what happened between them, she still risks herself to save him. "Plagg-" Marinette comes bursting into the elevator, looking in her bag "Tikk..iii!" OOF So I screamed, a lot. And laughed hysterically 😂 All Marinette had to do was run in facing the other way and she'd see Plagg and it'd be all over. All that had to happen was for her to run in a second or two later. All that had to happen was she noticed Adrien a second or two too late. But Adrien heard her say "Tikk...iii" in an attempt to cover herself. Remember, he's always had suspicion of Marinette being Ladybug and came to the conclusion easily enough. Kwamibuster did divert his attention away from it a bit, but Chat Blanc took place after and he didn't hesitate to think otherwise. Aww poor Zoe :c She's part of the "Chloe's used me as a human shield" club. (((Everything after this point, I had to completely redo because tumblr decided to suck and wouldn't allow me to post my message due to an "error" (which has never happened to me before), then wouldn't let me save it as a draft. Then when I went to copy it all, somehow everything got eaten and it wouldn't allow me to undo to bring it back 😭 Goodbye an hour and a half of my time. And another hour and a half redoing it all. So if I happen to leave anything big out, I'm so sorry. My luck has just been extremely awful lately.))) You can take the Miraculous away from the kid, but you can't take the Miraculous out of the kid. Max and Luka showing their hero sides while not suited up is so nice. Loving the Oblivio parallel! Marinette says softly, "I'm sure Chat Noir will save us." While I know she's Ladybug and knows Ladybug won't show up to save them, he doesn't know that. Her response of Chat Noir will come save them, shows that she has confidence in him. Even if Adrien knows Chat Noir won't show up, that's such a sweet thing for her to say and I hope he noticed that. Marinette: "I'M STUCK IN THE ELEVATOR" Alya: "Ohhh? With

Adrien?" Marinette: how did she know? "Yeeeeees!" Alya: oh wait this is really bad Adrien: "I'm stuck in the elevator with Marinette!" Nino: "How cool! Adrien and Marinette are stuck together in the elevator!" Alya: "Haha yeah so cool and not problematic at all!" I love this entire scene. Alya teasing Marinette but then being like oh shoot this is seriously bad. Nino being totally oblivious to it all and thinking that it's good news to get their friends closer. And Adrien's just like, I'm not going to ask for help, I'm just informing my friend I'm stuck in an elevator with my just a friend. xDD And that kiss on the cheek from Alya was adooorable! Emergency phone for the Kwami's is such a good idea. But yeah, if they all screamed "Hello?!" in my ear, I'd be chucking my phone across the room too. Adrien's like, "who's that? That sounded like a lot of people.: "I called the fire department." OK. Yes, because you tell the fire department not to fly but to ride a horse to come rescue you when you're in a skyscraper. And repeat it again "Understood, firefighters? Ride in on a horse." Adrien's over in the corner like what the heck? You also, to firefighters, totally yell, "No, no, not prehistory!" and then sheepishly grin at the person you're with. Totally not sus and makes absolutely perfect sense! And then here's the part that has me going ??? Adrien saw Optigami's eyes on the wall, immediately alerts her to that and shushes her. Now, they're hiding from an akuma, but the thing sees them. There's no hiding from it regardless of what's said. So why be quiet? And yet, he's shushing her which convinces her to hang up. Had she continued trying to talk to them, Nathalie might've caught on to there being something up. Adrien's in Chat Noir mode here, as if what she's saying could expose their identities to Hawk Moth. That intense look he gives her after the fact too really shows that, he's not messing around. They also were both just about to tell the other their identities, them being extremely close to each other to do so. They came so close! So what's going on here, exactly? Adrien's come to the conclusion Ladybug is Marinette before. In Chat Blanc, after Kwamibuster showed him supposedly that LB and Marinette are different people, he didn't hesitate to think that Ladybug was Marinette. I don't think he's ever let that possibility go. And the events in the elevator where she started calling for Tikki, and her nonsensical comments over the phone that'd be something Ladybug does, may really have him leaning in that direction. Also, so very sus again that once Optigami went away, they both were like "Oh it was nothing" "I was only wondering what that strange eye thing was." Yeah, that's why you guys sounded nervous like you had something important to say and got in each other's faces! :D It's also interesting, because whenever Marinette and Adrien are in a situation together, Adrien almost always is the one that takes hold of the situation and is more aware of his surroundings over Marinette. xD This man over here just eagerly eliminating children. x.x Like a lot of things in this show, if Alya had just answered that phone call from Nino, events may have played out completely differently! o.o There goes the Eiffel Tower again xD It never not gets blown up, knocked over, or teleported. LOL it's so funny to me, and also such a yikes moment, that while Alya rushed over to Marinette's, got the Miraculous, teleported back, found "Nino" and gave him the Miraculous, then teleported into the elevator, Ladybug and Chat Noir's civilian selves are just trapped in that elevator, awkwardly, and all alone. Likely deep in thought feeling guilty they're powerless to do anything without exposing their identities. xD But at least they're both brooding over the same thing and probably couldn't care less if the other one talks or not, nor noticing enough that the other's really quiet. XD And the way they both reacted to the portal being opened in the elevator. Cautious, but then Adrien puts his hand on Marinette's back and kind of has

her in a position where he can pull her back to him and protect her. Which is a very different kind of protection than he's offered to others, Chloe earlier in this episode being a very good example. Just a friend? Yeeaah. The fact that in every single episode that has Marinette and Adrien interact this season, there's something there, and it's just a matter of time before it's addressed. A bit sad that we didn't get actual Carapace in this episode, but I'm hoping we get him in later eps! MAJOR OOOF A train with people in it underwater, a skyscraper with probably a lot of people in it burning in a volcano, cars, what looks to be the building they were filming the music video in Frightningale, and the Arc de Triomphe on the moon. Yeah I'm seeing where things are going now with this. I'm going to write a post addressing some of these things a bit later. Ladybug in a ponytail is the prettiest hairstyle imo. Chat Noir rushes in, sees Ladybug, Carapace, and Rena Rouge all together, first wondering how they all got in "Hello, Chat Noir" there went any of his thoughts he may have had about it lol... and feels disappointed. "Sorry! I would have got you, if I knew your secret identity." Whoa hold up. Ladybug, so forwardly talking about knowing his secret identity? o.O I smell foreshadowing. "As I always say, m'lady. To know me means to love me." "Then I'll think about it." as she smirks and giggles. Guys. She's being serious. 😍😍😍 I admit, I wish we could know what she was going to talk to Chat Noir about after everything, since she thought the situation was taken care of and asked him to wait there for her. She obviously had something she wanted to talk with him about. And thank you Marinette's observation skills for knowing that's not the real Nino! But poor Alya, so horrified like that... I bet she's thinking both "What have I done? I just gave a Miraculous away to Hawk Moth essentially." and "How is it that I couldn't recognize that wasn't my boyfriend?" On the latter, Chat Noir's made that error several times as well. Hawk Moth just really sucks to do that kind of thing to these kids. Real Nino's here to comfort Alya. Doesn't even have to say a word, just gives her a hug. I absolutely adore this. They're so perfect together. ;-; "It (Lucky Charm) always shows me the right way, but this time I was shortly led astray." "Hmm." Hmm? What the heck does that mean? More foreshadowing?? What's going to happen next omg. Yes, Marinette needs someone out there who can replace her if something happens. And I know so many people are like, oh no, that should be Chat! But just think about it. Today, Chat Noir and Ladybug were trapped in an elevator in a situation where they were powerless. They came extremely close to needing to transform with Hawk Moth watching. Had Hawk Moth not been Adrien's dad and let him be, they would've transformed and fought, no doubt. A lot of things could happen, and Ladybug and Chat Noir are always in the thick of things. We've seen one or both of them become unavailable many times. It's good that someone else is their safety net. You may see Alya as just Ladybug's but she's also Chat's too. I screamed and cheered so loud when Alya got her Miraculous to hold onto! I've wanted this for sooo long now! ;-; Okay ew, the way the music went from happy and sweet to creepy when Gabriel and Nathalie were on screen. 😬 Watch: Gabriel, in his plot to try to get to know more about Alya, will have Adrien through a party or have some friends get together at his house which will likely include Nino and Marinette as well, and have him use his own son to try to get what he wants without Adrien suspecting a thing, even thinking his father's giving him more freedom and more of a normal life. How sick. x.x This was a seriously good episode! I'm very excited to see how this all plays out, because things are getting seriously intense in many different ways! Honestly, my original write up of this post was much better but I lost it all. Which makes me very sad and disappointed, but it can't be undone. :c So

I'll be writing a few posts that are more in-depth about some of the events that happened in recent episodes, including Chloe's character and situation, Adrien's feelings for Marinette, Adrien/Chat's situation with Ladybug, etc that are too specific and detailed to write in a thoughts and reactions post, so be on the look out for those! c:

Vol. CXV

It was a love story from the very beginning.

Dean's Emotional Prison (Part II)

(14x09, 14x10)

Hello friends! This is the second part of this meta, this time it will be Dean centric, based on episode 14x10.

My meta will be a resume of the following analysis from episode 14x10: X, X, X and X.

Rocky's Bar: Dean's emotional prison.

"This is my dream" Dream says when he talks about the bar inside his mind to Pamela. But soon, watching the scenes and the scenario, we will find out is not. The bar was his own Emotional Prison, what his mind thought he could reach, repressing his own really desires.

The entire Rocky's Bar was full of visual elements with Dean centric symbolism.

I wrote this thoughts in one of my metas:

This is a symbolism from Dean behavior towards problems and inner desires. He avoid "the beast" what he really wants, his own feelings, like the bullfighter does with the bull.

Brief comment about Cosmic Cowboy (one of the here's name from Family Business) we took it as a reference of Castiel.

Another take from the symbolism in the bar was this:

"Daphne Loves Fred" it's a reflection of Dean's innocence and pure love for Castiel. The green color is related to Dean's healing process and the lemons are a blatant representation of mature passion for the angel.

But I also related this to Scooby Doo clues throughout the show. The mention of it lead us to 13x16 but also, to Regarding Dean episode.

Based on this episode and 14x06 I was able to elaborate a spec that became true in episode 14x13. In which Castiel 'lost his memories' (in fact it was the appearence of Castiel who never saved Dean from Hell) and how Dean would pick his present family and his romantic love for Castiel over his past.

Another important scene was that woman trying to buy Dean's bar.

And what she said was very interesting... She said Dean had been interested in sell the bar, and she brought the papers for him to sign. But Dean didn't want to, and she turned around and said the bar was kind of "dead", I mean... Without customers... This is a very very symbolic scene, bc if we think this bar is Dean's emotional prison, where he keeps his repressed feeling and desires, and where he plays avoiding reality, and now it doesn't have costumers, and he wanted to sell it... Is bc HE IS HEALING PREPARING HIMSELF TO BREAK FREE FROM THIS PRISON, BC THERE'S NO MORE COSTUMERS (there's no more reason to be there, to that bar existing anymore.) Even so, he said no... Bc Michael locked him again. And he is again in negation.

Why Pamela?

I remember the so many discussions about Pamela running the bar together with Dean.

The consensus was : Castiel mirror. Why? Because the t-shirt and the wings in her necklace.

But I wasn't agreed with that. To me, Pamela was a complex of repressed thoughts, guilt, feelings. Pamela was Dean's subconscious representation.

When I first saw her I knew my brain will have to work hard... Bc, she is a projection from Dean's subconscious. There's not thing more complicated that our brains, so this girl was so great written, each detail and each word she said had a meaning FOR DEAN, bc she is A PROJECTION OF MEMORIES, FEELINGS, AND DEFENSE MECHANISM coming from Dean.

This pic here is yelling Dean's bisexuality, because Pamela represents Dean too.

The music playing in the background repeats the whole time "And I'm looking for a rainbow" which means, Dean is yelling his gay love for the angel but repressing it at the same time.

And let's read this dialogue here:

DEAN How come you always have a boyfriend?

PAMELA How come you only want what you can't have?

DEAN Whoa.

Pamela, Dean's complex repressed subconscious, is yelling him to search for a rainbow, and is yelling him he wants Castiel, the angel he can't have (parallel to 15x18)

PAMELA Besides, you don't want me. You just like to flirt. I'm a psychic, so I kinda know.

Again, Pamela here is now a representation of all women. Dean just like to flirt, but what he really wants is Castiel.

The prison inside the prison

When Sam and Castiel tried to bring Dean to reality, his own mind dragged him to a place that represented the prison inside the prison.

Good thing was FAMILY LOVE and ROMANTIC LOVE were able to help Dean to break free from this prison.

Quoting Destiel

When Michael quoted Castiel in the barn inside of Dean's head and also mocked Castiel when they were trying to get inside of Dean's mind was just a reinforcer of the idea that DEAN THINKS ABOUT CASTIEL THE WHOLE TIME. CASTIEL IS CENTRIC IN HIS MIND AND HEART. So, thank you Mike.

A little of Foreshadow...

This picture here now it has more sense to me:

White ball: Chuck, behind the stick.

Green and Red: Dean

Blue: Castiel

Facing Black: Death/Empty.

This was the Foreshadow of the end.

To Conclude:

'Nihilism' was an episode full of symbolism. We watched Dean's emotional prison and all what he had in mind. We also saw again what he really wants: Castiel.

The Astro Queue and Party Car!

Kez… my beloved… You’re so wonderfully expressive and cartoonish, and unusually flirty with anything that exists. Yet so charming and delightful, yet beneath it all you’ve got insecurities and I feel so BAD for her… But you know what, she didn’t need Paco, and the uh… Okay I kind of forgot their names, besides Hive and Spice-something, I have a general idea, and it doesn’t matter! Oh yeah, there��s also a rock from the Hey Ho Whoa Car, I appreciate that kind of retroactive return for an old car, that’s fun.

Weird tangent incoming, but… Going back to what I said about Kez kind of reminding me of Ryan’s lifestyle, she also seems to have the insecurity of Min, and how they both have this thing of… Being afraid of how they’re perceived and letting that really get to them! And Kez… she looked SO at ease and relieved on Min’s shoulder at the end, my heart is MELTING…! Maybe Kez has traits that can make her relate to both Min AND Ryan as a mediator, as an example of the one they become (also foreshadowing One who inversely becomes One-One), and I like that her lack of understand of social cues (or knowing disregard) allows her to comment as an impartial third, outside party…

But also- LORE! So it seems that those boots are meant to root passengers in place so they can’t muck about whenever the Steward is operating in the same car; I think we finally, FINALLY have an answer to what it meant when it told Tulip to stay in her seat- It’s likely a default line for a passenger who somehow manages to move from their place whenever the Steward is operating… Which, given all of Amelia’s mess and hijinx with the Infinity Train’s normal functions, that’s kind of her fault! Seeing Kez glitch also lends credence to the interpretation of denizens being spawned by orbs in a sense… Which, for Tuba-is-Alive conspiracy theorists, hope is there? Because her orb might still exist?

Regardless… The Steward seems to really live up to its name, and it’s cool to see how it usually is meant to function- Not necessarily for maintenance, but for giving passengers anything they need, should there be a necessity! Which, that makes me wonder if the Steward and One keep track of passengers to rescue them if things get dangerous, which again, is ANOTHER problem Amelia caused, and contributes further to Grace and Simon forming the Apex! Yikes… Still, it’s fascinating to see how the Steward’s role plays in interacting with passengers more, and intriguingly, Amelia’s own dialogue there… It kind of sounds like she suggested to One that he give Min and Ryan their things back?

So, maybe this is what Amelia had in mind; Maybe she wanted a more hands-on approach to the Infinity Train? Perhaps One invited her specifically as an actual human, second opinion as a passenger, someone who can provide input on how the Infinity Train is working, a review and feedback, constructive criticism! Oh god… Imagine if Amelia actually got her number down, and THEN One asked for feedback, and she decided to stick back because it’s not like she has anything waiting- But then realizing the opportunity to bring back Alrick made her number go back up!

Still, if Amelia IS trying to convince One to be more proactive, then it’s interesting that she becomes even MORE hands-off than neglectful when she takes the role of Conductor! Did she just, like… Give up at some point? She mentions that Ryan and Min have to ‘individuate’, is One keeping a human passenger as suggestions on how to handle passengers more, as they directly watch over them? Is Amelia suggesting that Min and Ryan be more individual and separate, perhaps having their own numbers even, because she disagrees with One’s experiment? I can only guess, but I’m glad that, as I’d hoped, Book 4 indirectly gives us a look and context to Amelia’s backstory on the Infinity Train, as setup for her eventual arc… Also, just considered Kez and Amelia parallels as people called in as a second, outsider’s opinion on an issue, especially if you consider how One becomes a duo himself, too!

Poor Ryan, he really does seem to have an issue of… Feeling belittled, being made to feel like he’s dumb and his ideas aren’t good, perhaps? While Min, he can get frustrated and I feel more angry at Ryan openly as a result, VS Ryan at Min… And I think that of course plays into his obvious anxiety; How Min and Ryan both feed into but can also bring one another up… Min is nervous, he’s overtly cautious, but Ryan can encourage him to put himself out there more! But also, Min can be the patience that Ryan needs, they really complete one another… But on the other hand, Ryan’s outbursting behavior can make Min even MORE anxious and resentful, and Min constantly being a dampener on his AND Ryan’s ideas can make Ryan chafe, it’s fascinating!

It kind of fits the crossroads theme; How these two could use their opposite traits to propel one another, or instead drive each other crazy… And that could’ve played into the Infinity Train’s decision to appear to them at that moment; Do Ryan and Min collaborate and let their differences make up for one another, or drive each other crazy? How Ryan taking the keys, it could’ve led to Min taking cues from him and growing, or it could’ve led to Min being understandably frustrated and even MORE resentful with Ryan… And Ryan could learn to take into account Min setting his own boundaries, or instead disregard them recklessly! They go hand in hand together, it is a FASCINATING synergy!

Also, I have to wonder what happened to Morgan, where they are… And I like the neat subversion of like, everyone already being gone; But it doesn’t matter, the party is still a ‘hit’ because our trio had fun together! And how they don’t need to impress anyone, just themselves; That’s some incredibly clever symbolism there, I like it! Also appreciate the return of Mr. Green and the theming of the Green Car in some capacity, I wonder what’s the story THERE, if the Green Room actually has a secret portal to the Green Car, etc.! Who’d have thunk that Green Car short didn’t just allude to Book 2, but also Book 4 as well!

Onto the next destination, passengers! I can’t wait to see what awaits us…!

A Visual Reference guide to my thoughts through Agony of a Witch

This is a visual guide of my reactions to Wing it Like Witches, written with notes I took during the episode that were typically stream of consciousness. Well, they said it would be an angsty week. I can take it. Let’s see now…

One Piece Chapter 1003 - Initial Thoughts

Well then

The weeks still feel long but eventually we get to One Piece, continuing on with the Supernova vs Yonko fight where we left off with Luffy wailing on Kaido

The fight however, feels far from over

Big Mom is once again, shooketh

But as predicted in my theory video, Gear Fourth has ran out, attrition is not on their side.

Then comes Big Mom looking to pick the scraps - a similar parallel to Kid really since he goes off to try and finish off Kaido

Zoro to the rescue though, all his fretting over Luffy keeps leaving him open to attacks though

Finally someone else attacks BM though, Law with the Counter Shock

Hey you can’t Tatsumaki! That’s Zoro’s move!

Kaido really out here trying to eat people

Zoro ain’t having that though, proper slash that was with the Dragon aura himself. That’s how you do a Tatsumaki

Though there is cause for worry that Kaido’s clued in that the sword is doing a lot of the damage for him

It is telling that we’re reminded of the hole in the roof, it may yet still come into play

I was worried Orochi would be alive but it seems that he is indeed still a dead head

Of course CP0 was invited to the festival, I shouldn’t be so surprised

Whoa now, are we implying that magical squirrel girl Bao Huang is CP0? Or is she just briefing them on the raid?

There’s Bepo, Penguin and Shachi!

Definitely foreshadowing there, we do have to deal with the executives, Tobi Roppo and the Lead Performers, but I feel like maybe there’s something CP0 doesn’t know about our allies

Also Usopp has recovered, godly healing factor that

Jimbei though looks like he’s being bitten, and Yamato looks as though they’re attending to someone - perhaps Law indeed sent the Akazaya to where they were by accident

Didn’t see Robin, Brook, Marco, Chopper, Drake or Carrot and Wanda though, wonder what they could be doing

I wanna know more about this CP0 dude, he seems to be a bit like an evil Garp. He’s all for the alliance fighting Kaido because he knows this weakens both forces, also he has the eye scar so you have to wonder if he is a Monkey D. also he’s the only one not hiding his face

Those broken open doors seem ominous. Is it perhaps that within Onigashima Kaido kept pets? or prisoners?

Hybrid Kaido is coming, we all expected it but Oda is being a tease

But this is still just a game for the Yonko, a new step for sure but still just a game

We should be very worried right now.

Not only is Luffy done for 10 minutes and thus leading Zoro to keep leaving himself open, but Kaido is shifting to a form we have yet to see, both he and Big Mom look they’re about to fight together to continue toying with the Supernova

And Onigashima still floats. Kaido is still not using his full attention.

It does keep my theory of the Act III tragedy still ongoing but it also exposes another older theory I had with CP0. Before I suggested that they freed Law but that turned out wrong, the purpose however seems like it could come into play, Orochi was playing hardball with them because he was backed by Kaido, now he’s dead and Kaido could be defeated - leaving all those fancy destructive weapons free for the taking. I don’t expect CP0 to directly get involved, but you best believe they will let their presence be known.

Thankfully no break, but I doubt we’re gonna see as much positive action with the Supernova now, Zoro got a good ass hit at least but you know now that Kaido will consider parting him from Enma. Remember, this is the Form 3 stage of a villain; this is where the Supernova could very well be beaten down before they can ascend themselves. 10 minutes is a long time, can they hold out until then?

Hola Mishamigos! It’s Friday and I am here with more nonsense from my SPN rewatch - dudes, we are all SLEEPING on Season 11, in both good and bad ways. There is so much in just the first trifecta of “Out of the Darkness, Into the Fire;” “Form and Void;” and “Bad Seed” (since “Baby” deserves her own analysis) - so come relive my rewatch with me. This is a summary of some things that stood out for me (few are analysis, most are clowning; basically this is a pared down live tweet - you’re welcome/I'm sorry); copy/paste from the script is included with my own emphasis:

OUT OF THE DARKNESS INTO THE FIRE [11x01]

-There’s lots more to this episode, but really this is the most important and relevant part (also it’s too soon and I am offended, damaged, attacked and hurt) -

DEAN: Yeah, whoa. All right, take -- take it easy, okay? (gesturing to the deputy’s wound) Bad guys?

JENNA: Rebar. I sought cover. I fell.

***LIKE EXCUSE ME, but what in the actual fuck. Did they just decide to pull that from the episode four years later to emotionally traumatize us in the subsequent rewatches? I know it’s probably coincidence but my sad soul has not recovered *enough* for rebar’s first SPN appearance to be right now in this moment when I am blissfully 5 entire seasons away from the dead end in the road.

- The only other important part of this episode - when Dean takes the call from Cas privately first before putting it on speaker for Sam, and something about this exchange is so endearing-

(Dean’s phone rings)

DEAN: Where the hell are you, Cas?

(The scene flips between Sam and Dean at the hospital, and Castiel in the woods.)

CASTIEL: I'm...I'm okay.

DEAN: You don't sound okay.

CASTIEL: Dean, I am fine. Besides, what I have, you can't help me.

DEAN: What do you mean, what you have?

CASTIEL: Just please tell Sam -- Rowena escaped with the Book of the Damned and the codex.

DEAN: Okay, forget Rowena. Where are you?

CASTIEL: Now, you tell me -- the Mark . . .

DEAN: Oh, really? You're worried about me after everything that I’ve --

CASTIEL: Dean, is it gone?

DEAN: Yes. I'm good. I mean, I'm not great.

CASTIEL: Makes two of us. (Dean puts Cas on speakerphone) This is good news.

SAM: Hey, Cas.

CASTIEL: Sam.

***It’s just so poignant that Dean wanted privacy for the first minutes of that call, probably because he is still haunted about the beating he gave Cas in 10 and *other things,* and Cas is literally being torn apart by Rowena’s curse but he only cares about Dean getting rid of the Mark, and the world is ending but Dean only cares about Cas and where he is - honestly this scene - I’m -

FORM AND VOID [11x02]

(love the Genesis call back to this verse in the title - “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.”)

-speaking of emotional trauma, this fucking shit again -

JENNA: Yeah. I pretty much grew up here. Learned to ride my bike down the road. Had my first kiss at that blue house over there. Lost my virginity up there (pointing to different house).

DEAN: I'll bet blue house was pissed.

JENNA: She was. (handing Amara to Dean) Do you mind?

***This frustrated/disappointed/angered/saddened me to NO END despite already knowing that it happens constantly on the show, because what was the reason?! Did they have to point out that she had a female love interest for this brief moment just to turn her evil and kill her off? There was no need to include this detail. It’s either blatant homophobia or willful ignorance (so also blatant homophobia) that this is what representation means. I won’t go on because obviously we are aware of this and much has already been said/written about it, but still, fuck this.

-we meet Billie and there is more “FORESHADOWING”-

QUEEN IS SINGING “OH DEATH” aka Death’s entrance song from Season 5 and I am BLOWN AWAY by this almost as much as her amazing voice - like did they know at this point she would become the new Death season later? DID THEY KNOW? I need answers.

We also get our first mention of the Empty, so that’s cute that they referenced both Dean’s and Cas’s Season 15 ‘demises’ in the same episode (it’s not cute really and I am crying again now) ->

BILLIE: You and Dean . . . Dying and coming back again and again. The old death thought it was funny. But now there's one hard, fast rule in this universe. What lives . . . dies. So the next time you or your brother bite it, well, you're not going to Heaven . . . Or Hell. One of us -- and, Lord, I hope it's me -- we're gonna make a mistake and toss you out into the Empty. And nothing comes back from that. I know you're dying. I can feel it. You're unclean in the biblical sense. So I'll be seeing you again, Sam . . . Seeing you real soon. Name's Billie, by the way.

-another reason for me to continue denying the flaming trash heap that they tried to call the series finale-

Sam is dying here because he has been infected by the Darkness-vein-animal-exploding-people-plague so he goes to pray about it

SAM: So . . . I know it's been a long time, but . . . Dean and I, we've -- we've been through a lot of bad. But this is different. This is my fault, and I don't know how to fix it. And if I have to die, I've made my peace with that, but . . . Please. Dean deserves better. Dean deserves a life. There are people out there, good people, who are going to suffer because of me, and I am not asking you to clean up my mess. Hell, I don't even know if you're out there, but . . . If you are . . . And if you can hear me, I, um . . . We need your help, God. We need to know there's hope. We need a sign.

**DABB WROTE THIS F-ING EPISODE. How are you going to write Dean deserves a life here to just do what you did Dabb. Don’t get me started on my feelings about this scene in the dark depths of my finale-denying soul. DEAN DESERVES BETTER INDEED, SEASON 11 SAM.

To rub salt in this particular wound, they show us THE cutest scenes of Dean with this damn baby so we can have feelings about how great of a parent he could be (also I ADORE that whenever Jared, Jensen, or Misha have scenes in later seasons with young children/babies it is SO clear they slip into their own natural dad mode without even noticing it; these guys just all seem like excellent fathers and it makes me mushy) and even Crowley picks up on that shit and makes his little ex-boyfriend joke (after Demon Dean and most of season 10 there is no way I will ever NOT believe that Crowley and Dean did not take a tumble; I will take no criticism):

CROWLEY: The child likes you. No surprise, really. You're very maternal.

Speaking of King Jackles, next comes the episode he directed ->

BAD SEED [11x03]

-Cas/Dean parallels with the Attack Dog Spell/Mark of Cain-

This arc appears in the 10 finale and then runs through the first three episodes, culminating in this one. Despite it hurting my heart to see our angel so bloody eyed and feral, I LOVED this parallel; it’s truly brilliant - Cas’s reaction to the attack dog spell is such a mirror to the way Dean dealt with the Mark most of 10. It’s also beautiful that Dean is the only one that can pull Cas from the spell’s control at the end of this episode; that alley scene between the two of them in 11x02 is so tender and sweet. I like to think this brought an entire new layer of depth to their connection, because no one truly understood how Dean felt under the influence of the Mark until now (someone write a fan fic about this exchange!!!!!!) I *love* this journey for them (please say that sentence in Alexis Rose in your head). Bonus that the episode containing my most favorite of *domestic* phone calls with Dean and Cas follows this one, and also Dean’s SHORT SHORTS follow because now he is just walking around the bunker in short shorts while Cas is there and I maintain this is because of this new level of closeness. As previously stated I ACCEPT NO criticism.

ALSO OF COURSE THE FACE CUP THAT JENSEN HIMSEF DIRECTED HIMSELF TO DO. I STAN A KING. I HEREBY DEMAND AT LEAST ONE FACE CUP PER EPISODE OF THE MINI SERIES JENSEN.

***I just saw something posted by @watchthebeesandfish back in 2015 when digging around the internet re: this episode - that this was the first time both Dean/Cas had seen each other as “themselves” since that heart wrenching bridge scene in 9x10, when Dean walks away from Sam/Cas after the Gadreel possession reveal (he goes on to take the Mark of Cain in the following episode, and has it the rest of the season through season 10 finale). That is brilliant and accurate and I BOW DOWN in humility to that parallel. I now love this scene a billion times more. *single [wo]man tear* Anyway, hope you guys enjoyed this little trip down memory lane, thanks as always for getting through my rambling, and HAPPY FACE CUPPING FOREVER.

So I saw the Hunchback of Notre Dame to alleviate the isolation...

Spoilers ahead.

With @lumiereswig‘s recent reblog of her Hadestown experience, I thought I’d share a musical that I saw virtually—the Hunchback of Notre Dame. This was not a Disney adaptation, I repeat, they took the good stuff from the movie and then told the story straight from the book.

And oh my gosh, it got dark, so spoilers ahead.

Frollo got humanized and it makes him more terrifying. First off, he’s played by Patrick Page, who, thanks to my recent research, plays Hades in Hadestown, and if that doesn’t draw parallels I don’t know what will

Anyway, Frollo has a brother who is actually a good person and elopes with a Roma woman. Frollo finds him dying and he gives Frollo his child, who is disfigured, and Frollo, giving us the first reason why we should hate him, tells his dying brother “wow, this thing is a monster because of your sins” and then his brother dies.

Of course, they sing the Dies Irae directly after—an indirect foreshadowing of Frollo’s death by Quasimodo’s hands

“The saints blessed him and the monsters protected him.” my GOODNESS what a line!

And my gosh, the way they introduce Quasimodo is so freaking genius. Michael Arden comes out like any regular man and then SMEARS HIS FACE WITH BLACK PAINT as Frollo ties the hump to his back (THE SYMBOLISM THERE OMG) and the bells descend from the curtains above as the chorus swells.

Also the chorus plays the statues and each one has its own personality. It’s so obvious that the statues’ voices are all Quasimodo’s inner psyche tugging him one way and then the other, and every time they speak they use small bells or cymbals to accent their words.

Also Quasimodo can barely speak…UNTIL HE SINGS. Arden has such an amazing, youthful voice, and I could feel his anxiety for freedom in “Out There.”

And then Frollo comes upstairs and RUINS EVERYTHING. He uses this kind but CONDESCENDING tone that just makes me want to throw something. Instead of ABC’s, Frollo tells Quasimodo the story of the flight into Egypt, when Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus fled from the persecution of the firstborn and were protected by St. Aphrodisius—MORE FORESHADOWING. But they are so RUDELY interrupted by the Feast of Fools, and on that note

Phoebus is actually a cocky SOB—like sure, they sent me in just in case the festival goes awry, but all I’m really here for are the ladies, rest and recreation!

AND THEN CLOPIN SHOWS UP and introduces ESMERELDA and she dances and Phoebus is like “I’ve seen the face of an angel! I’ve been forever changed!”

With Quasimodo’s arrival they announce the contest for the king of fools, and that scene is pulled straight from the movie. Aside from a few little details, they didn’t change much.

And after all that Esmerelda chases him down and tries to apologize, but is stopped by Frollo, who’s like “ew, I know your kind, you practice dark magic” and Esmerelda’s like “if I had magic, I’d use it to save my people!” and Frollo is like “well shoot she’s smart” and then gets tempted

Esmerelda says something very Christian-like and Frollo is like “oh, you wish to be saved? Stay until the end of the service I’d be happy to teach you” and leaves and she sings “God Help the Outcasts” and holy moly does Ciara Renee have a voice or what

But at the end of the song she sees Quasimodo watching her and runs after him, and the statues are yelling at him to find a place to hide, quickly, quickly, she’ll see you

But she finds him and finds out he’s nearly deaf because of all the bells he’s been ringing all his life. He tells her he was talking to his friends and then berates himself, and Esmerelda’s like “No, that’s wonderful, I like your friends.” And Quasimodo’s face just lights up and immediately starts ringing the bells and telling them to sing for her—if that’s not the most wonderful show of affection I don’t know what is.

They both sing “The Top of the World” and throughout the whole thing Quasimodo slowly realizes that she’s not going to berate him like Frollo would and you just see him become more and more animated throughout the song. At the end of the song she kisses him on the cheek and you can tell, you can tell that’s the first time he’s been kissed at all

And then Frollo comes upstairs and RUINS EVERYTHING. “Quasimodo what were you doing ringing the bells off-schedule?” He turns and sees Esmerelda and is all like “oh, I thought you had left! I can still teach you the ways of the church, just stay here forever.” And Esmerelda, bless her soul, actually turns him down politely. “I don’t think this is a good idea.” Frollo reaches for her hand and she backs away. “I see the way you look at me.”

Frollo jumps back like he’s been stung by the most overdramatic wasp in the world “hOW DARE YOU! Your soul is so unclean you can’t see goodness in others!” And calls the guards on her.

And then he berates Quasimodo for having impure thoughts and the gargoyles whisper around him, like snakes in the shadows as Quasimodo promises to never again think about her.

AND THEN STALKS HER TO A TAVERN. Okay, it’s indirect but stalking all the same. And watches Esmerelda and Phoebus fall in love.

Then we get into Heaven’s Light, and Quasimodo has seen the true face of God, because there is a human down there who isn’t afraid of him, who touched his face and suddenly the darkness is filled with light, a light so bright it must be from Heaven…

And the next song is literally the flipside of Heaven’s Light; while Quasimodo sings about how pure and open Esmerelda was to him, Frollo clutches Esmerelda’s scarf and sings of Hellfire. And I mean, Hellfire was the most dramatic part of the movie for me, so this part was a little underwhelming…but Page carried that entire scene. My GOODNESS his voice. And him stumbling around as the saints look down on him and berate him while Frollo just keeps repeating “It’s not my fault!” Like, you can tell he believes what he says but he knows there’s evil in him now (I mean, there was evil in him before, but the sneaky kind) as the lights slowly change from blue to red, closing in on him until everything is bathed in a hellish glow…

And for the rest of the musical he wears a black and red cape over his otherwise white robes, showing how he has fallen and is acting on his own urges.

He visits the prison—literally swoops in like a bat from hell with his new cape—and King Louis XI is there overlooking the prison and he just looks at Frollo and goes “oH! My astrologer told me I would have an unexpected guest!” Frollo just…. dies inside. I lost it.

Anyway he manipulates the king to give the church military power and now soldiers are going left and right searching for Esmerelda; they come to a brothel and the women refuse to talk and Frollo’s like “fine, burn it down.” and Phoebus is like “whoa, hell no.” and Frollo shrugs, stabs him in the back, and blames Esmerelda

We interrupt this moment to remind you that everyone in the chorus is literally an angel and together they sound like an actual cathedral choir, thank you for your time.

Meanwhile Quasimodo’s like “oh shoot, what do I do? I want to protect her” and the statues tell him to go after her, find her and protect her like St. Aphrodisius protected Mary. Quasimodo is still unsure, but St. Aphrodisius himself comes out of his stained-glass window and gives Quasimodo his blessing (and a bit of unneeded comedy along with it).

Esmerelda makes Quasimodo take care of Phoebus, Quasimodo lies to Frollo for the first time, and Frollo’s like, well, we found her hideout, we attack at dawn.

Phoebus and Quasimodo have the same chemistry in the musical as they do in the movie. “You can barely speak!” “You can hardly walk!” Their arguments are funny, but just like the movie, Clopin finds them and is like “well, they’re gonna hang!” Esmerelda stops it, and Frollo shows up and RUINS EVERYTHING.

Frollo has her locked up, he confesses his love in literally one of the most horrifying ways a person can confess. He starts out soft, believing that he can save her, rescue her from dark magic and be her sanctuary forever. He says Esmerelda has made him feel human…and then tries to force her to kiss him. She strikes him. “Help, a demon! Help me, please!” (FINALLY, someone shows him the respect he deserves)

Phoebus and Esmerelda grieve over what’s going to happen, and when they sang “Someday” I cried.

But the song that shook me to my very core was “Made of Stone” where Quasimodo is tied to a post while the statues plead for him to do something and Quasimodo yells back, “I’ve wasted my faith believing in saints of plaster, but the only one worth believing in was my master”

“Take all the dreams you’ve sown, take all your lies and leave me alone!”

“All right, Quasimodo, we’ll leave you alone All right, Quasimodo, we’ll trouble you no longer You’re right, Quasimodo, we’re only made of stone We just thought that you were made of something stronger.”

And when he sings the last line….HOLY. HELL. I just…I don’t have words for that.

But he quickly changes his mind and rescues Esmerelda from the fire. The choir swells again, singing the Dies Irae, as Quasimodo lays waste to the crowd outside Notre Dame with giant rocks and molten lead. Phoebus rallies the crowd into rebellion. As chilling as this scene is, I think “Oh, now it’s gonna be like the movie, right?” NO.

She dies. The smoke got to her or something. But she definitely dies. And Quasimodo’s talk with Frollo doesn’t end with Frollo pulling a knife. It’s sad, and slow, and Quasimodo finally comes to the terms with the abuse he’s been living with while they both grieve over her death in different ways. The shock on Quasimodo’s face as Frollo repeats the same pious talk of sanctuary just after killing someone…at this point, I want Frollo dead, obviously.

And so does Quasimodo. He stands up straight for the first time and we see…he’s taller than Frollo, and that scares him. “The wicked shall not go unpunished,” he says. “The wicked shall not go unpunished,” echo the statues. The Dies Irae swells one final time as Quasimodo drags Frollo to the balcony, lifts him up—“I told you, master. I am very strong.”

“You don’t want to hurt me!” Yes you do, whisper the monsters.

“Quasimodo raised his two huge hands, and with a great bellow threw his master over the edge of the roof and into the abyss below!” And I am chilled to the bone. Thanks for that.

And then Phoebus arrives cuz he missed everything. He can’t even lift her up, and they’re both grieving.

Then the chorus—they are seriously the best chorus in the history of ever—approach Quasimodo one at a time, smearing black paint on their faces and hunching over. Quasimodo sets Esmerelda down and turns his back to the audience. The ghost of Quasimodo’s mother sings for him. Esmerelda gets up and walks through the doors to eternal salvation. She turns back to look at him. He stands up and faces the audience, no longer hunched over, not a speck of paint on his face.

“What makes a monster, and what makes a man?”

And the chorus swells, and they all bow, and I want to see it again. So I watch it again, because that’s the beauty of the digital age.

Ok wait

So, the parallels with the story of Oma and Shu and the color coding of the characters being brilliant foreshadowing for Zutara has always been legend in the fandom and its been analyzed and analyzed and analyzes again. Yes, that's great. I piss myself off about it literally every day. But on THIS DAY, on THIS DAILY ITERATION OF BEING BITTER ABOUT ZUTARA, I just kinda. . .noticed something else about the Oma and Shu story and parallel and the color coding and the animation that's probably already been thought of or pointed out before but it was my first time noticing it and I'm even more mad now. Maybe it’s just me! I am probably reaching. I don’t actually think the animators had this in mind when creating the series, but the coincidence is still like “hhmmmmhhhMMM oK” Anyway my blog name is Zutara Secret Tunnel and I’m a big fan of the Oma and Shu parallel theory within the Zutara fandom so I’m strapping on my tin foil hat HERE I GO I WARNED YOU:

We know the theory that red and blue was supposed to be coded for Zuko and Katara cause we know the animators of the show understand colors and symbolism and aren't babies. We also know that they were in the exact same positions as Zuko and Katara in the catacombs under Ba Sing Se (which has rightfully been pointed out as the dumbest jail to put them in if not for this type of foreshadowing??? There was a real jail RIGHT THERE?? I digress).

Ok so we see that the one in red (Oma) is in Zuko's position and the one in blue (Shu) is in Katara's position, cleverly gender swapped. We've all seen the still of how Zuko is in basically this EXACT SAME SITTING POSITION when he tumbles down into the catacombs, with Katara standing over him. (Also not in red, but in earth tones, which Oma is ALSO shown to be in during the story while I don’t think Shu’s coloring changes BUT THAT’S BESIDE THE POINT).

(I couldn’t find the exact still I wanted but ya’ll KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT)

Ok, but as the story of Oma and Shu continues we find that Shu was killed in the war. We see Oma mourn him and then we see her anger, and her lashing out. When she's described as unleashing her powerful earthbending to end the war and create the new city of Omashu, this is how she's shown:

Huh looks familiar from a time when we saw a paralleled also red-coded character do something similar.

Wow so it turns out that Zuko just really likes doing things similarly to this red-coded character in a great love story with a blue-coded character. Even right up to the finale of the show!! What a cool bending move Zuko. REALLY COOL. And especially when he’s fighting for peace alongside Katara, our lovely blue-coded gender-swapped Shu, and right before he nearly sacrifices HIS OWN LIFE to SAVE HERS.

And how quaint that the blue-coded character, Katara, is there to heal the character she's tied to in this parallel, thus changing the story from one of loss to one of triumph!

And I know what you might say, one of the great themes of A:tLA is that of destiny being open to change based on an individual's decisions (although the deus ex rockina might be a divergence from that, but I digress again!!!1), especially due to the conclusion of The Fortuneteller. But think about it. This isn’t destiny. This isn’t a reincarnation or a retelling. They may be thematically tied to this story, but how did they change it based on their own choices in their own lives and scenarios? In this scenario, Zuko chooses to fight to end the war with Katara, rather than making the mistake that Oma did and waiting to act until it was too late and she had already lost Shu.

So it's not destiny, just a parallel, and an even further example of how we can learn from history and legend to shape our own destinies, and how these scenarios often repeat themselves but the outcomes of them can be changed based on what individuals do in the times that they are experiencing them.

And honestly it was Oma's actions in bringing peace (whoa like a certain Fire Lord whattttt) that created the great city of Omashu. Wouldn't it have been rad to see a union between Zuko and Katara bring about a project like, oh gee idk, Republic City? Things we coulda had, my dudes. Things we coulda had.

(Also if you think I didn’t notice that Oma is in white when she unleashes her anger, a fire nation mourning color but also potentially a way to show her not tied to any one nation sort of like a certain fire prince who was technically a “traitor” to his nation and learned to appreciate things from all different nations YOU ARE WRONG I NOTICED THAT TOO)

Anyway I hate this show and myself so I'm gonna go now. Don’t @ me.

First impressions of Symphogear XDU Global

... from someone who’s never played gacha and in fact didn’t even own a phone until as of 2 months ago

Oh, so this basically the first episode of season 1.

“Superb Song”. Personally, I’m fine with this choice of translation; I’m pretty sure it’s what the creators originally intended, too. But “Swan Song” still sounds much cooler, doesn’t it :P Also, this song. Goosebumps, every time...

“The latest game data (130 MB) will beIn the background downloaded” More downloads? Also, that “beIn” isn’t a typo, the words were weirdly mushed up against each other in the app for some reason.

Symphogear XDU OP! Noice. I’ve seen this before on YouTube, but it’s still really awesome. And it contains a few minor spoilers for GX (Carol and Elfnein and the Autoscorers), noting that for future reference.

Miku in this OP is just so cool! A scenario where Miku became a main Gear user, that would’ve been nice. Alas, canon, it was not to be...

Kanade and Serena are active Gear users in this too, noice. But there are two Gungnirs and two Airgetlams now?...

This reminds me a bit of the game mechanic in Mega Man Battle Chip Challenge, where the battle is mostly automatic based on your arrangement of chips in your “program deck” beforehand, and the only interactivity is your ability to slot in a special attack at any point during the battle (but you can only use your L and R chip slots for this, and you can only use them once).

Yay, battle won.

Skimming through the terms of service. Lots of this reads as generic lawyer boilerplate, not tailor-made for this app, but rather feels like it was adapted from some very standard and thoroughly vetted template. Like, there’s stuff in here talking about using a robot/spider/site search/analysis application, but doesn’t that only apply to websites? Can you robot crawl an app server?

And it talks about it being prohibited “posting photographs or the like of nudity with a high degree of exposure” but is it even possible to post photos in this app?

I think people are starting to realize that the GoT isn't the story they thought it was. The thing is, people like to think of GoT as this amazing story with plot twist after plot twist, and they really believe that it subverts narrative tropes, but my goodness. It's not. It's a great story, but it's a story about a power struggle in a feudal society. Everyone's role is clearly defined. I didn't even know the story, but as soon as I heard the character descriptions, I could predict the end. 1/2

People are yelling about Missandei's death, but seriously? If things go the way I think they're going to go, Missandei had to die. Not because she's black and they're killing a POC character to give a white woman pain, but because her story is tied to Dany's. And Dany's ending isn't going to be happy. Also, I get that people are pissed b/c Missandei is used as shorthand for Dany's "Otherness." That's fair, but as you said, there's no way GoT is fixing this in the last 3 episodes. 2/2

It’s an interesting topic to talk about in this moment where there has been discussions over storytelling, spoilers and plot twists in regards to contemporary cinema - while certain series are going the route of “you’ll never expect what happens!!”, Game of Thrones still has a storytelling based on expectations. Sure, there are “whoa” scenes, but they are not subversions. Sneaky attacks, betrayals, etc are “whoa” scenes that elicit strong emotional reactions in characters, but we’re not here being surprised by what happens. We see the parallels and the foreshadowing with little attention. I’ve been a pretty casual watcher until recently, i only watched the entire series once, I barely remember the previous seasons but even I can follow the pattern of parallels and foreshadowing. Characters’ journeys are pretty traditional - descent arcs, circular narratives, foils.

It works a lot like Supernatural - Supernatural almost never surprises you, not if you pay a little attention. We often see things coming half a season before it happens. Everything works in parallels and foreshadowing, arcs go in spirals. Characters go through similar situations they others and even themselves went through, to highlight similarities and differences.

(This is what good storytelling should work, in fact. Unless you’re an extremely good writer and are able to work while breaking the rules...)

Euron Greyjoy attacked unexpectedly a fleet of Daenerys’ twice already. The first time Yara, Ellaria Sand and her daughter were captured (her other two daughters killed), and Cersei killed Ellaria’s daughter and forced Ellaria to watch her die while being unable to do anything to save her. Tyrion lamented not foreseeing the attack. Now, Tyrion is also there during the attack and almost gets killed too. Missandei is captured and Cersei has her killed while her loved ones are forced to watch helplessly. While the Sands were just allies for Dany&co., now the stakes have become extremely personal for them. Instead of Ellaria’s children, it’s Dany’s dragon child to die. Tyrion and Varys almost drowned.

It’s the same thing, but a step up in terms of personal stakes for the main characters.

Also the same things happen to everyone in a game of parallels and foils. Ellaria’s three children died, Cersei’s three children died, Dany’s three dragons are already 2 dead out of 3. Dany will find herself in the same position as Cersei and at that point we’ll see if she will make the same choices until the end or she will make different ones than Cersei.

Everything is supposed to be predictable if you pay attention. There are “whoa” moments, of course, but they are supposed to make you go, I should have expected it! if not outright I knew it! - that’s good storytelling. At least in my opinion.

Then Game of Thrones can be criticized for a lot of stuff (especially racism), which is valid and in fact something we can and need to have a discussion about as a fandom. But again, it’s a structural thing and we been knew. No point in yelling about it now like it comes as a shock that there weren’t many women of color in the show.

But it knows how to do storytelling. That doesn’t mean it always does is perfectly, but you can tell they have at least read a storytelling 101 manual and at least know how it’s supposed to work.

Party Crasher Reaction!

Adrien and Wayhem chatting as friends, that’s so great! And hey, is the animation in this episode the best quality animation this show has? :O The boys wanting to have a party for Adrien, awww! Planning it together just like Alya and the girls do for Marinette. This is so sweet and so needed. Another parallel. Wait what, they’re lying to the girls after promising to help them plant trees? That’s really bad, how dare you Nino you’re better than this. I know you care about Adrien but whyyy. And honestly though, Alya will find out. I don’t think you want to go there. Marinette’s too smart for this. She is the QUEEN of lame excuses. 4 simultaneous and sudden excuses as to why they can’t come, psh! Gotta go investigate. Gabriel in that outfit to collect his akumas A+ The YMCA-like music was such a good touch. Adrien did NOT appreciate Nino snatching his phone when Marinette was calling him. Not at all. Poor boy wishes she could be there, too. :c Marinette’s his friend, too. Why Nino, why are you implying otherwise. When Adrien’s party to have fun could’ve cost his mom her life. Could you imagine how dark that could’ve gotten, if one day, Gabriel told him Emilie was down there, and because of that party and the power going out, they lost her forever? Oof. CONFIRMED: Roger is bald. Some of those pictures though I mean xD Kim on the piano had me rolling. Jagged hopping in through Adrien’s bedroom window because he heard the music on the way by in his helicopter. What even but this is gold I’m laughing so hard. AND MY LUKA YES MORE PLEASE. Okay so given the people that showed up, like Thomas and Vincent, and Mr. D’Argencourt, is Adrien blowing off his responsibilities for this party? xD Mr. Bourgeois to get away from his daughter with his face covered in make up and then her butler claiming he was there to find Mr. Bourgeois, with his face also covered in make up cracked me up too, what is this episode it’s genius. I think almost every character in this show was featured in today’s episode, apart from Alya’s family, Nino’s brother, Luka’s mom, Ondine, Sabrina, Lila, Kagami, and Marinette’s parents and grandma. Luka, you’re in the middle of a party, why are you looking at your phone? Did you text Marinette hoping she’d show up? x3 Genderbend fans, Marinette is Marino, canon. Not gonna lie, I’m disappointed we don’t know why or how Master Fu (aka DJ WONG) knew about the party and got in. Marinette exposing her identity to him and then him looking shocked and around the room like it was serious business. BUT THEN LISTEN, Marinette doesn’t know that Adrien is Chat Noir, but Master Fu of course does and knew that there was a massive party going on at his place most likely because he keeps an eye on both of them, and the party is a prime target for akumas, so he must’ve thought something would happen. Marinette asked why he was there, but he didn’t actually answer! C’mon Marinette, start putting it together please! Master Fu in ADRIEN’S ROOM. HE DIDN’T ANSWER YOUR QUESTION. Oof bad choice of disguise, girl. Just think, if Master Fu didn’t fall off and have Kim catch him, he wouldn’t be Rio Singe. Hawk Moth releasing an akuma to save his wife as she’s in urgent danger. Okay, that’s okay, it’s like the only akuma I’ll excuse. Gorilla making his action figures kiss. Reminds me of a certain scene in Gorizilla. Which coincidentally also featured Wayhem. Even THEO was at the party? What! Poor Wayhem, man. Guys. There’s an akuma. And you’re laughing at him. You should know better that he’s going to attack you now. There’s an entire party of people at his house that he cares about, but instead of addressing them all and suggesting they hide, all Adrien’s worry and attention is on Marinette. x3 “Marinette! Just hide! Quick!” ARE YOU SURE SHE’S JUST A FRIEND? Luka hiding behind that car looked exactly like how Marinette would. Ladybug finally got taken by the akuma, not Chat. Whoa dang. Master Fu: YOU NEED COMPANY TO HELP YOU Chat Noir: NO, GIVE ME BACK MY LADY Master Fu: Of course he won’t listen to me... Disappointed this episode came out too early so we don’t see Viperion and Pegasus’ debut until later. But VIPERION. LOOK AT HIM. HE’S BEAUTIFUL. Anyone else scream when Chat said his name and he turned with that look or is it just me? Also, Viperion diving into save Carapace, Luka saving Nino, oh I love him so much. And Pegasus seems to know Viperion well enough. WHAT ARE WE MISSING?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME, KIM? You’re still in Adrien’s bathtub swimming?? His interactions with Xuppu were amusing, Master Fu being like oh no what have I done. But he’s AMAZING. He finally got his wish of being a superhero! I knew it was foreshadowing in Syren. Rio Singe’s transformation music is the most incredible thing I’ve ever heard. It’s like Donkey Kong and that game was my childhood with such wonderful memories, thank you so much for this! The team works so well together, it’s astounding! I know Rena Rouge, Bunnyx, and Queen Bee aren’t there but wow. Viperion and Ladybug’s dances were the lamest hahahaha I love it The group pound it. It’s so cool. LUKA DID A POUND IT. Max and Kim (Pegasus and Rio Singe) are best friends. Adrien and Nino (Chat Noir and Carapace) are best friends. And then Marinette and Luka (Ladybug and Viperion) could be a couple at this point for all we know given how much we don’t know. Oooh Nino: I shouldn’t have lied, I’m sorry. Marinette: I didn’t exactly tell the truth today but Nino and Marinette: we did it for Adrien! These two ugh you guys are so sweet. Marinette and Adrien walked out of his house together smiling and talking like friends. AHHHHH THE DEVELOPMENT. I’m glad they’re going to go help the girls with the trees afterwards. What a nice way to end the episode! x3 Honestly, besides the fact that RTS in Switzerland aired this waaaay too early, this episode was honestly one of my favorites, if not my favorite. It was crazy but so cool and I’m loving all the hero help, because honestly, Ladybug and Chat Noir can’t do it alone. Especially if Ladybug is out of commission right away. Looking forward to the rest of the season so much, and to see what episode will knock this one out as my favorite!

Billie had a plan B, but TFW will have their second chance

When the first plan didn't work, because the Winchesters decided not to do it, Billie sent "the bomb" to the Empty, because the Empty was one altering the order too, another cosmic creature that could ruin her plans again. She was willing to do whatever was needed to keep things in order, and everyone in their places, where they belong.

But this is again, THE SECOND CHANCE, TFW will have to defeat Chuck, as I repeated in previous analysis and also, will be Dean the one maybe resetting things to defeat the chaotic god, helped by Jack. Why? Because Death said it : YOU ARE STILL USEFUL. After reading the new ending of Chuck, which, Sam couldn't read. Damn.

We regroup

Sam showed again that he is the leader here. The one with the head focused, the one trying to find another way, always researching. So I'm sure he will be the one searching for the second chance against God.

The chat between brothers in which Dean recognized he couldn't stop, when he was with his gun against Sam, was a sign of Chuck's script, but is like using Dean's own desperation and anger against him, a powerful way to make him follow the script.

I feel strange

So beautiful when I saw Castiel talking with his kid. Jack is feeling strange because EVERYTHING IS OVER, THE PLAN, HIS DESTINY. Which I really believe is not truth.

But Castiel comforts his child, 'We care about you because you are you, not because you are useful.' And again, this is like something that thrilled me, why? Because it felt like another foreshadow. Yes. Because I feel these are the words about to come at the end, i really hope Sam and Dean say these words to Cas too.

And why Jack killed a plant without with his touch? It was a parallel to Amara in episode 11x23, remember? She killed flowers. Why is this important to say?

Because Jack has the same powers Amara has. Remember Chuck saying I can't make it without you to his sister? Because she is the only one who can reset the world? Well, hello, Jack can do that too!

So now that everyone is gone, is Jack the one who can save them all, helped by Dean who will press the reset button.

Gas-n-Sip, where angels became humans

Another cute scene was Sam giving something useful to do to his child. Because he can read all over the Nougat Boy's face that sadness and fear. So, let's make this kid drive the car.

As a symbolism of what I think will be the ending, let's Jack to guide us through a new world, to be the new driver. To fulfill his destiny once for all.

And because you only get the Empty if you summon him...

Another clue to my spec about Dean rescuing Cas from the Empty, because we have that spell Nick used to open a gate to the Empty and drag Lucifer out of it. Yes yes, the Destiel dark mirror, was a guide to our future 13x20, when Dean will summon the Empty and rescue his angel.

But also, Death is dead? Whoa, that was unexpected, but, let's see how TFW kill every cosmic evil creature. Heheheh. You are next, Chuck and the Empty!

To Conclude:

I know we are only yelling DESTIEL DESTIEL DESTIEL AND I WANT MY CAS BACK, but there was a little things to talk about now.

The spoilers from next episode shows us an Apocalyptic world, just Sam, Dean and Jack standin, and one dog, but, is the image of devastation , is Chuck's script.

They're gonna have a second chance, as I predicted, and this time the reset of the world ofr a situation will play a pivotal role in the next episode.

And then Dean will rescue Cas in 15x20, but this is not the Destiel meta hahahaah.

It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation

Supernatural 13x11 “Breakdown,” and 13x12 “Various and Sundry Villains.”

I can tell I’m up to eps that are after the mid-season finale now, because the Destiel game is picking up.

Breakdown

This is another ep setting up the Wayward Sisters ‘verse, focusing on Donna, Doug, and the widening circle of crimes that mix the human and supernatural.

The Butterfly Killer seems at first to be a human serial killer in a human crime case, until we get the big reveal of the human Butterfly Killer actually servicing supernatural clients, using the all too human medium of the internet. This is the beginning of an overt theme that questions where supernatural hunts end and human cases begin, which goes on to be explored in later eps. The show has been fairly careful to tread the line on this until now, but like so many aspects this season it, this case explores dualities and messes up all the lines between them. We see this same theme with Jack being both human and angel, Mordor and ParadiseEarth, the two Kaias and so on.

The Butterfly Killer’s music also plays with this as there are three love songs linked to torture and suspense. We get Look In My Eyes by The Chantels with the first torture scene, Too Good to Be True by Lon Rogers & The Soul Benders when Wendy cries for help, and Big Flame (Is Gonna Break Me Heart In Two) by Doris Wilson as the false lead of the radio in an empty room.

Are these upbeat happy moments, as the killer and clients think, or are they horrifying, as the victim and real audience think? Perspective, baby, it’s all about perspective, and also that pesky morality.

We get another installment of false/corrupt fathers this ep too -- Agent Clegg is not Dean’s father, despite calling him “son.” He’s not even that much older than Dean, so this is clearly a power play, with Clegg using it to claim a more senior role in the patriarchy.

AGENT CLEGG: Excuse me! Hey! What are you doing? DEAN: Oh, I um… AGENT CLEGG: I asked you a question, son. DEAN: First off, I’m not your son. Second- DOUG: Whoa, whoa, easy. Agent Clegg, this is Agent Savage, FBI. (x)

As always, John is still present in the text, when Dean follows his advice rather than Clegg’s. The use of John’s old-school VB radio works, where Clegg’s misdirection does not. This is interesting, as Dean has mostly been criticised via these kinds of parallels in recent seasons, but this time, John comes off well. He taught Dean and Sam some valuable skills, right alongside the toxic masculinity and other issues he brought to their family.

But just in case we’re being lulled into thinking toxic masculinty maybe isn’t that bad after all, we get the sexist truckers chiming that they’ll make Alice “family”. Ugh.

More interestingly, Sam and Donna are both depressed about the missing family members at the start of the ep, a niece in one case, and because of the obvious paralell, this ep pretty much confirms for me that Sam’s role towards Jack is more uncle (or perhaps older brother) than father.

SAM: You see? Told you. This is stupid. DEAN: It’ll work. Dad used it all the time. SAM: This isn’t even our kind of case. And you know, with the real Feds here, we should back down. DEAN: You’re joking, right? SAM: We’re still fugitives. DEAN: They think we’re dead. SAM: Do you really wanna get on the FBI’s radar again? DEAN: Okay, so what do you wanna do? Hmm? You wanna call up Donna and say “Hey, sorry about your niece. These kinds of things happen. Later.” And head back to the bunker so you can mope some more? SAM: I’m not moping. DEAN: You got up at 10:00 am this morning. 10:00 am. You, Mr. Rise and Freakin’ Shine. And then you turned down pancakes. SAM: I wasn’t hungry. DEAN: They’re pancakes. Look, I know you’re in a dark place right now, okay? I mean, we lost Jack. Mom is… I think about ‘em too. All the time. But you can’t let it eat you up. Now look, when I was-when I was broken up, you were there for me. Well, I’m here for you now. And I’m telling you, the only way out of this is through. Now when everything goes to hell, what do we do? We put our heads down and we do the work. We’ll find Jack. We’ll save Mom, we will. But right now, Donna needs our help. Okay?

DEAN: I mean, we save people, Sam. SAM: Yeah, we also get people killed, Dean. Kaia, for instance. She helped us and she died for it. DEAN: Hey, look, I know you’re in some sort of a- SAM: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, don’t - don’t… You keep saying I’m in a dark place, but I’m not, Dean. Everything I’m saying is the truth. It’s our lives. And I tried to pretend it didn’t have to be. I tried to pretend we could have Mom back and Cas and - and help Jack. But we can’t. This ends one way for us, Dean. It ends bloody. It ends bad.

Isn’t it interesting the way that Dean and Sam are emotionally flip-flopping? Dean was depressed when Castiel was gone. Sam is depressed without Mary or Jack. That toxic co-dependency is shattered all the way through now, with only inertia keeping it in place. They go through the motions of this speech, which is becoming more threadbare with each iteration. When are they allowed to just stop, feel their feelings, and grieve? When are they allowed to be Hunters and people? When do they get to let the negative aspects of John’s legacy go, and just keep the good bits?

The text actually talks about this via metaphor. Sam’s heart goes for $500,000, turning it into a commodity. No room for feelings there, right? It’s just a lump of meat, not the seat of emotions. But the text makes it pretty clear that this is a horific way to value people -- for the value of their physical labour alone, with no place for the qualities that make them human.

CLEGG/THE BUTTERFLY: Add a zero. Actually, add two. See, those freaks that you and your brother chase, those are just the ones that can’t pass. Either because they’re too mean or they’re too stupid, or both. But most monsters… hell, they could be your next-door neighbor. They work a regular job, mow the lawns on a Saturday. And they need to eat, which is where I come in. SAM: So you sell them people. CLEGG/THE BUTTERFLY: I sell them people other people won’t miss. And because I do that, I save lives. If my customers didn’t have me… then all those hungry, hungry hippos would be out there huntin’ and killin’. And you couldn’t stop ‘em. No one could. You should be thanking me. SAM: Huh. Yeah. Alright. Go to Hell. CLEGG/THE BUTTERFLY: I’ll see you there. Now I know you’ve been stalling because you think Dean’s gonna show up, but… Sorry, kid. It’s showtime. Ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt your regularly scheduled program to bring you something truly special. A new auction. Introducing… Mr. Sam Winchester!

We also get the latest iteration of “people have heard of the Winchesters” here, but yet again they aren’t taken seriously enough. I wonder where that’s going? I’m starting to think the season will end with the invasion from Mordor, because the show is doing a lot of set up to expand the awareness of monsters and Hunting. Obviously this is at least in part due to Wayward Sisters, but it seems to be foreshadowing the Apocalypse redux as well. Is the supernatural going to go public? Will the FBI get involved? The show has been reminding us of the fact Dean and Sam faked their deaths to get away from the FBI. I hope we do get more on this. I think it would be interesting to see the FBI actually figuring out what the Winchesters are, after all this lead up of everyone else getting it so wrong.

Finally, Donna shines in this ep. Her great interrogation is fantastically done, and she kicks ass in the field. I really can’t wait to see what she brings to Wayward Sisters.

Doug is such a sweetheart, and now he knows about the supernatural, in the most horrific way possible. I really, really hope we get a bunch more of him working through his issues in WS.

DONNA: Doug. I’m sorry I lied to you… but I can’t give this up. DOUG: I know. Donna, you kill monsters. You’re a damn hero. But that’s… it’s not me. I’m sorry. I love you. I’m sorry. DONNA: Doug, wait! SAM: Let him go. Donna, when you choose this life, anyone who gets too close, eventually they get hurt. Or worse. So let him go. He’ll be safer that way.

That endless refrain from Sam, but you know, that is no way to live.

Various and Sundry Villains

Wowser, what a Destiel-heavy episode! Yockey really knows how to work it.

I want to start by talking about the books that Sam and Dean are consulting. Because I’m a giant nerd. I always find the book titles in Supernatural interesting, and these are particuarly so, because as far as I can tell they are mostly made up.

“Principia Phantasmagoria” doesn’t seem to be a real book, but rather a mash-up of several other very well known books.

The most likely progenitor is the Principia Discordia - or - How I Found Goddess And What I Did To Her When I Found Her. The introduction to this tome claims, “If organized religion is the opium of the masses, then disorganized religion is the marijuana of the lunatic fringe. Most disorganized of all religions, Discordianism alone understands that organization is the work of the Devil. Holy Chaos is the Natural Condition of Reality, contrary to popular belief” (x).

I really hope this is the text Yockey is slyly referring to, but he could just be putting together words that create a strong impression of what the book would be about.

Principia is Latin for a fundamental principle, and two foundational texts use it in their titles. Descarte wrote a Principia, which was one of the inspirations for Newton’s 1687, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, which explains, “the principles of time, force, and motion that have guided the development of modern physical science” (x).

Phantasmagoria is a display of dream-like images or seances, “a form of horror theatre” (x).

Put them together, and the Principia Phatasmagoria would be the seminal text on dream-walking. I wonder who wrote it in the Supernatural ‘verse?

"Archive of Unnatural Occurrences" also doesn’t exist, but in Googling that title, I found a) a Supernatural fanfiction about two sisters; and b) a this absolutely fascinating treatise on Archives: “Archive Fever: A Freudian Impression” by Derrida and Prenowitz (which pretty much tells you all you need to know, right there). They argue that creating an archive is like the Word of God, because it’s both a Commencement and a Commandment -- it doesn’t just begin to categorise a collection of material or ideas, it also changes the way a society thinks about those materials or ideas because of the way they are categorised (x).

The Book of Day and Night is real - huzzah! It’s an Egyptian text designed to help the dead king find their way in the afterlife, and is usually part of the decoration tombs. Here’s a description: “Other funerary compositions include the “Book of Day” and the “Book of Night,” which depict Nut, the sky-goddess, spread out across the heavens, as well as the “Book of the Heavenly Cow,” in which Nut is transformed into a cow on whom Re ascends to the firmament. Astronomical figures decorate the ceilings of several burial chambers” (x).

So what I take from this is that a) there are going to be a lot of “Nut” jokes coming up, b) that a lot more people are going to come back from the dead this season, and c) if Sam and Dean create a map of the paths between worlds, an Archive of them if you will, they will have the power of Gods.

Heady stuff!

Of course we don’t start off on such a high note.

SAM: I’m just saying, Dean, Jack was our way over there, obviously, so with him gone… DEAN: Okay, well, Jack’s been gone before. We found him once. We can find him again. SAM: No, no, he didn’t run away. He is literally in an alternate reality. DEAN: Okay, so we’ll just come up with a plan B, okay? You said it yourself. We just keep our heads down and we’ll do the work. SAM: You said that. DEAN: And I was right. Yeah. So you read, do your Sam thing, I’m gonna go for a beer run. SAM: Yeah. DEAN: We should probably loop Cas in at some point. SAM: We’ll fill him in when he calls. He checks in every day. DEAN: Yeah, with a bunch of questions and no leads. [We see Castiel sitting in a dark prison cell in hell, illuminated by a single unseen overhead light] SAM: I’m sure he is doing the best he can. Just go get beer or… [waves Dean away] (x)

Dean wants to go on a beer run, and thinks immediately of Cas. A nice callback to his muffed love declaration at the end of the Amara arc. We also get another go around of the “we just do what we do” mantra that Dean keeps spouting this season. Sam seems to think it’s wearing a bit thin.

And then we cut to Lucifer and Cas, and get a dick joke about the size of Lucifer’s “power”. Hahaha. Yeah, I can see where this is going already.

Next up is the latest incarnation of the theme of “people have heard of the Winchesters” and in this case, have heard of the car too. We find out later it’s via Rowena who told Jamie and Jennie about them, and I would love to know what she actually said. Jamie and Jennie are awful cocky given the givens, so methinks Rowena downplayed how dangerous the Winchesters can be.

So Jamie and Jennie blithely hexbag Dean into love, so that he’ll steal the Grimoire for them. Luckily we’ve already had that impotence joke, so the foreshadowing says this will come to naught.

And then we get this...

SAM: Hey, uh… I think you might be right. I think maybe it’s time we go ahead and call Cas, because, I mean, if…if… [Dean continues to whistle while doing a little spin as he enters the library. He drops the 6-pack and his keys on the table] SAM: You all right? DEAN: Am I all right? I’m in love. SAM: You...Oh, are you? DEAN: I mean, I am, like, full-on twitterpated here. Seriously, I can’t wait for you to meet her, either. She - I mean, she’s… She’s sweet and she’s beautiful and she’s just kinda sorta perfect. Anyway, I’m thinking of asking her to move in with me here…if that’s cool ‘cause this is big time. [Dean opens a drawer and removes the Black Grimoire and unwraps it] DEAN: Ahh. SAM: Uh, Dean, w-what are you doing with the Black Grimoire? DEAN: It’s a gift. For Jamie. SAM: For…Jamie? DEAN: My soul mate. [winking]

All the mentions of Castiel that lead up to Dean’s announcement are wrapped around this scene like a... condom? Sorry, I can’t think of a better wrapping metaphor. There was the reminder of Dean’s muffed love confession on the last beer run, and then this mention of Cas by Sam which Dean ignores, and instead Dean announces he’s in love, and calls her his soul mate -- he might as well have added they have a profound bond. Like, if Dean and Cas were a het will-they-won’t-they pairing, it could not be any clearer that the only person Dean could legitimately be declaring as his Love here is Castiel. It’s not even subtext, it’s main text at this point, given the way Castiel has been used to frame this moment... but it’s main text that refuses to state it overtly so that homophobes can continue to live in comfortable in denial.

Okay, I have to rant a bit here and let off steam about this. I’m here for the Destiel. I love this love story. But come on. COME ON. It’s cowardly storytelling to write this kind of queering of the text -- to actually dangle plot threads off it, it’s that central -- and refuse to admit it. I know a lot of the Supernatural creatives now pretty much do say that’s what happening -- the whole “eye fucking” stuff in the scripts, for instance -- but it’s mostly framed as “jokes” that aren’t actually jokes, and I’m tired of this. Get it together, show. This is old.

ANYWAY, Dean is in lurrrrve, but OH NOES, it’s some random girl who has obviously hexed him. It’s not even a question in Sam’s mind or our minds. The wrong name came out of his mouth, and he’s too damn happy about it, so we all know Something Is Very Wrong With Dean.

Sam comes to the rescue of course, and we get the slapstick moment of Dean and Sam fighting each other as the witches get away, with Sam’s limbs all over the shop, and Dean making goofy faces. I love irony like this -- it’s not a happy moment in the plot, but it’s a funny moment thanks to the performances. As I mentioned in my last meta, this is why the Winchesters aren’t taken seriously when monsters gossip about them. Moments just like this.

Rowena!!!!!!

I love her so much. She can resurrect as many times as she likes and I’ll be happy.

Intriguing that they have her and Sam bonding over their fear of Lucifer. They’ve really done a fabulous job of making Rowena a complex and interesting villain. I think she’s pretty much my all-time fave out of the rogues gallery.

DEAN: Yeah, the Devil’s gone. ROWENA: Oh, don’t be stupid. He’s never gone! SAM: Okay, listen, I know what Lucifer is cap– ROWENA: Oh, can we not? It’s like reminiscing about an abusive relationship. Why do that? DEAN: Let’s get back to the book. What kind of hurt can these chicks do with it? ROWENA: Oh, I’m sure they have big plans. SAM: Sounds like you know ‘em. ROWENA: Just remember being a young, overly ambitious, wee witch. And I have to give them some credit. Outfoxed you, didn’t they? [chuckling to Dean] Tell me, did they get to fifth base? DEAN: There’s no such thing as fifth base. ROWENA: Oh, you poor, sheltered boy.

Fifth base, in case you were wondering is anal sex (x). There’s a few different ways to read Dean’s response to Rowena’s question. He could be dissembling because he’s deep deep deep in the closet, but to me he comes off as genuinely puzzled. Given that, my reading is that Dean has never had anal sex with another dude. Sure it’s possible he’s done so without having heard this phrase before, and even if he’s never done that particular act, it still leaves a lot of room for sexy things he could have done with dudes. However, the case I make is that Dean picks up slang like other people learn languages, and if he hasn’t heard this expression before, his exposure to gay culture has to be pretty limited. He might have tried a few things, but not so much that he’s learned the lingo. In short: he’s inexperienced at best, and quite possibly still hymenated in this respect.

That noise you hear? Is a thousand fan theories crumbling to dust. Fare ye well, amigos, it’s been a blast.

But! (Butt. hahaha)

On the plus side, we can now revisit the whole issue of Dean’s first time with a dude, and I have to thank canon for giving us that golden opportunity.

We get another dick joke when Sam tells us, “Dean has a tape of Led Zeppelin’s “Moby Dick” with an 8-minute drum solo.” You’ve probably noticed that I tend to look at the lyrics of songs used or mentioned on the show, but in this case it’s instrumental so my meta instincts are thwarted.

Except for the title of the track. Moby. Dick. The great white Dick that got away. Hahaha. Ironic, as it’s the ep that Castiel finally gets free. And now I will forever assume that Jimmy Novak was well endowed. ;)

There are only two more things I want to mention in this ep. The first is the fatherhood theme. It’s mainly present in the conversation between Castiel and Lucifer.

LUCIFER: There’s no “if” here in this equation, okay? Let me - let me just - let me just tell you something about my dick brother, about every version of my dick brother, okay? When he decides to do something, he does it. Doesn’t matter what the cost or who has to die. It’s gonna happen, ‘cause that’s just the way he rolls. CASTIEL: If you’re right, how much time do we have? LUCIFER: How much time? Oh. I guess that depends on how much time he spends torturing Mary Winchester. He liked her, right? Oh, Cas, you should have seen it. I mean, the things he did to her. In all my time in hell, I’ve never seen anything that horrible. Just…Oh! CASTIEL: Stop. I don’t want to hear any more of your lies. LUCIFER: Oh, this from the angel who almost has me beat in that department, and that’s saying a lot, pal. CASTIEL: Well, you always say a lot. LUCIFER: Okay, let’s face it, Cassandra, the truths I say hurts ‘cause the’re hard to swallow, so people call them lies. Go figure. CASTIEL: You want truth? How ‘bout I tell you a few truths about your son? LUCIFER: Did you just have an angel stroke? CASTIEL: Did you know that he loves movies? Fantasy movies, movies with heroes who crush villains. LUCIFER: [scoffs] Well, that’s - that’s - that’s nurture. That’s not nature. CASTIEL: And he’s thoughtful. He’s emotional. Remarkably intuitive. You - you know, he, uh, he resurrected me just out of instinct. Isn’t that a beautiful gesture? LUCIFER: [pacing angrily in his cell] Yeah, that’s, uh, that’s beautiful. CASTIEL: Jack would rather kill you than hug you. Seems relevant. Did you know he doesn’t - he doesn’t even really look like you? And he reminds me so much of his mother. LUCIFER: [whispers] Wow.

This particular mention of dicks doesn’t please me, given the subtext here that all the dicks are pointed at Dean. I don’t want Dean to become an angel condom for Michael. But I may be getting it at some point anyway. :(

That aside, I adore how effectively Cas needles Lucifer here. Cas really has learned from the best, and he’s such an asshole. It’s interesting, though, that Lucifer brings up nature vs nurture. I wonder which he considers the cause of his Fall?

Finally, the episode ends with Dean chiding Sam for being in a dark place -- role reversal from the start of the season when Sam was chiding Dean the same way.

DEAN: Look, what happened to Rowena was messed up, okay? But you just let the deadliest witch in the world walk away with a page from this book. SAM: Yeah, and if Rowena breaks bad, I will hunt her down myself and put a bullet in her. I will Dean. But if she’s right, and if she does see Lucifer again, then… I hope she makes him suffer. DEAN: You gotta get out of this dark place. You know, whatever’s going on in your head… SAM: Dean. DEAN: What? SAM: [inhales deeply] You know what? Honestly? DEAN: Yeah, how ‘bout honestly. SAM: I know what Rowena is dealing with. And she’s not the only one who… [inhales deeply] feels helpless. DEAN: What do you mean? SAM: I mean, I had a plan, you know. I, uh… Help Jack, bring Mom back. It wasn’t much, but it was something. It - it kept me from spinning off the rails. And now… Jack is gone, Mom is still in hell, basically, and I-I-I- just… DEAN: We’ll figure it out. SAM: [defeated and angry] Dean, we don’t have a plan. We don’t know what to do. So - so how? DEAN: [confidently] I don’t know. But we will, you and me. [takes a drink of beer] SAM: Yeah. Night. [exits kitchen]

Sam articulates exactly why he’s going off the rails -- because Jack and Mom are missing. And that’s freaking huge. Because if Dean was off balance because Cas was missing, and Sam is off balance because Jack and Mom are missing, that means they are not each other’s sole emotional supports any more.

In other words, the toxic codependency really is on it’s very last legs, the old scripts aren’t working any more, and it’s time to start writing some new ones.

I’ve already seen the next two eps, and if Various and Sundry Villains was a strong Destiel episode, it has nothing on Good Intentions. That is a game changer.

I give Imra major props for pushing back against Kara since we know she admires her a lot

Brainy’s sad little admission about how he had to hide so he wouldn’t scare people, and Kara’s bemused “huh” in response, was a subtle touch on the passing/not-passing topic that’s come up repeatedly since S1

um, I also love this marital spat that is both about Mon-El’s feelings and not about him at all? This argument was nicely set up and actually shows not only how well Mon-El and Imra know each other, but how much they genuinely care about each other too

I have watched this phone call between James and Lena three times now and I still can’t decide if she actually knows that “sick” means "dying of alien plague,” because she sure didn’t seem too concerned

lack of J’onn and Alex scenes was like #1 on my list of criticisms from last year and if this was not among your favorite moments in the episode why are you even here get out

The scene with Kara and Imra discussing whether or not Kara’s taking the right approach here is fab and sowing the seeds for Kara to experience the self-doubt that Jindah prophesied in 3x11

which was intentional, since Imra specifically brings that episode up when she explains what she saw when Psi got into her head

I love that this comes right on the heels of Kara saying that she always follows her instincts, and yet *SOME PEOPLE* don’t believe that she means what she says here... 👀🤔

Uhhhh, how exactly does Lena have liquid kryptonite to just run into Sam via special IV and why is she not concerned about the potential toxicity of it?

All the people whining about Mon-El being “too powerful” or whatever bullshit should really either watch the show properly or shut up, because they deliberately showed him being knocked down by the Worldkillers multiple times in this episode while Kara and/or J’onn were perfectly fine.

Huh, so Purity doesn’t really hurt J’onn, but Reign does. Interesting...

Oh, look, this whole screw-up with Lena, Sam, and Kara is exactly what I said would happen because it’s the plot of Wicked and they’ve been running Wizard of Oz parallels this entire season
