National Day on Writing
October 20 is known as the National Day on Writing. It was created by the National Council of Teachers of English, who felt writing is critical to literacy and needs greater attention and celebration. Everyone writes all the time, even if its something as simple or as short as an email or a text. For more information, you can visit the NCTE website. You can also post about this day on social…

Unleashing the Soul: What I Love Most About Writing
What do you enjoy most about writing? Introduction Writing is more than just putting words on a page; it’s an intimate dance between thought and expression, where each sentence carries a piece of the writer’s soul. For me, the greatest joy in writing comes from the profound sense of freedom it offers—a freedom to explore, to create, and to connect with the world in ways that are deeply personal…

How John Irving Warped My Young Mind—And Made Me a Writer
I first heard about The World According to Garp from a movie trailer. It starred that wild, electric guy from Mork & Mindy, except now he wasn’t playing an alien—he was just a regular man. Or, at least, as regular as life allows. The film looked like a dark, existential comedy about the absurdity of human existence. Like most kids in the early '80s, I worshipped Robin Williams. His manic, rapid-fire humor was pure magic to my pre-teen self.
Of course, the movie was rated R, which meant I wouldn’t be seeing it anytime soon. But that was fine—because not long after, I found the novel at the supermarket. Back then, I spent grocery trips browsing books and magazines while my mom shopped. That’s how I first encountered most of the cultural icons that shaped me—The Hulk, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Stephen King, KISS—all thanks to Winn-Dixie.
I was already a voracious reader, though my selections leaned heavily toward sci-fi and horror tie-in novels. If it didn’t involve intergalactic warfare, grotesque monsters, or senseless murder, I wasn’t interested. But Garp was different. For one, it was massive—544 pages. That was a mountain of words for my 10-year-old brain. Who could possibly read something so enormous? But I loved Robin Williams, and I was in awe of Garp's sheer size. So, I begged my mom to buy it. She did. And my life was never the same.
The novel follows T.S. Garp, a writer born to a famous feminist author. Like all of John Irving’s books, Garp explores themes of New Hampshire, death, and wrestling. It teeters on the razor-thin line between the warmth of human connection and the cruel randomness of tragedy. People die left and right in ways so ridiculous they shouldn’t be tragic—but somehow, they still are.
As a young man, Garp tells his wildly eccentric mother he wants to be a writer. She decides that’s a good idea—and writes her own book, a feminist manifesto that becomes a cultural touchstone. Her story is raw, powerful, and deeply personal. It reshapes the world. Meanwhile, Garp’s novels—melodramatic, pretentious—barely sell. His mother gave him life, but in doing so, she also stole his dream.
Other storylines weave through the novel—infidelity, the fleeting nature of youth, the sheer miracle of raising children. But at its core, Garp is about family. It’s about how our lives are shaped as much by the people we love as by the tragedies that strike when we least expect them.
What fascinated me most was how Irving turned an entire life into a single, cohesive story. I’d never seen that done before. (And wouldn’t again until I read David Copperfield.) The idea that life could be structured like a novel—filled with heroes and villains, foreshadowing and irony, inciting incidents and unexpected twists—made everything feel more manageable, even at 10 years old.
Before I even reached the halfway point, I knew: I was going to be a writer.
Technically, I’d already known since first grade, when I wrote my first “novel”—six pages long, titled Jaws. It was about a shark. The fact that someone else had already written a book with the same title, far more successfully, was an insignificant detail only adults cared about. But now, my purpose felt solidified. I would write books. I would share my thoughts—complex and doubtlessly brilliant—with the world. I would connect with people through stories. I would also, obviously, become rich and famous.
Thank you, Mr. Irving. You showed me that ordinary people can be just as fascinating as monsters and aliens—sometimes even scarier.
And thank you, Winn-Dixie, for stocking The World According to Garp next to The Sugar Pops.

Why I Want to Be a Writer?
Because if I don’t write… I might actually lose my mind.
I’ve gone stretches without it—and every time, something in me starts to ache.
I don’t just want to write.
I need to.
It’s breath. It’s survival. It’s the thing that keeps me me.

Why I Write
Why I Write - Everyone's reasons for writing are different - here are mine. #WritingCommunity #amwriting #writerslife #WhyIWrite #writing
I have always loved to write. Even from the age of about five or six, I would rewrite my favourite fairy tales in my own words and try to invent different endings for them. The story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears had always been a particular favourite, and I always felt as though Goldilocks, with her brazen breaking and entering, got off with her crime scot-free. To make up for this, I would…

I write because I want to leave the last few traces of my existence, so someone could hold onto it when my memories wisp away. These souls who stumble over the odds of life- I want them to know that it is okay to be vulnerable, to breakdown, and, to love.
Writing brings me the ability to describe magic in near blurry words, to describe something so profound and miraculous. And just like that, something that seems extremely out of reach will someday sit softly on your palms. And you'd gaze at it wondering how'd it happen.
I write because I want at least one person to believe in the magic that I talk about. I want them to know that- you can only learn to get away if you learn to get through. And life, is not about filling every page with adventure and sharp memories. Some pages are meant to be blank, they’re simply about unwinding, being with yourself and nowhere else.
I write so it could help someone untangle the mess, and I write for it helps me to untangle the knots I’ve tied all across my soul.

Sometimes I wonder why I have so much self hate in my 30s, then my mom says stuff like "don't let your daughter ONLY like boy stuff or the boys won't ever date her because she's just 'one of the gang'" and my 'tomboy' ass remembers.
To be clear, though, fuck that. My daughter is whoever the hell she wants to be. Right now that's a werewolf who loves dinosaurs and the beach, so she's just going to keep on doing her own thing.

I have a lot to say
I am a writer
I can't simply say nothing
You ask me why I write
I want to do what I love
I want to provide an escape
I want to encourage myself
I want to protect creativity
I want to inspire people
And I want one's imagination to go wild
This is the goal of a writer.

Impetus
Impetus - A poem #amwriting #WritingCommunity #poem #poetry #writerslife #WhyIWrite #poetrycommunity #writercommunity #Impetus
Hi everyone, I’m sharing another poem with you today. The inspiration for this one came from the question, ‘why do you write?’ to which my mind threw up a multitude of answers – the most prominent being that I write for clarity. I write to understand and to be understood, and it also helps to order my thoughts. Anyway, here’s the poem, I hope you enjoy it! Impetus I bring myself to the literary…

How I became a writer.
A story of blessing in disguise

When I lost the most precious love I was so attached to. It was not hard to leave another thing behind: the EGO. I knelt down and surrendered to something greater than myself.
A miraculous event happened. My Intuition — the internal GPS — took over my practical mind and led me to follow my heart to the tropical island where the story “Wild Love Holy Island” has taken place.
