It's been a month since chapter 3 was released, where's chapter 4?
(this is about this fanfic btw)
The good news is that I've written 10k words. The bad news is that I've only gotten a little more than half of the chapter done. That doesn't mean I don't have things written for the bottom half, it's just that it looks like bare dialog with general vibe notes. I estimate around 16k words total though, so it should come together sooner than later.
SO I want to release some fun snippets for y'all to look at. Please note that any of this is liable to change. Also, you can harass me in my inbox for updates. I love answering your questions and laughing at your misery.
Spoilers under cut.

Ragatha stood up and walked over to where Caine was seated. “Can I get a list of all commands?” She asked, only a hint of nervousness in her voice.
“Certainly!” Caine says as he blasts into the air. He digs around in his tailcoat and pulls out an office style manilla folder. It visually contains a few papers, but with how thin it is there must only be a few pages inside.
Ragatha takes the folder from Caine and opens it.
“Oh boy” she says after a second of looking it over.
“I wanna see” Jax exclaimed as he hops over the row of seats.
“Hold on” Ragatha holds the folder defensively “Let’s move to the stage so everyone can take a look”
Jax hopped over the seats again while Ragatha calmly walked around. Caine watched the two curiously.
Well, Zooble wasn’t just going to sit there. They joined the other two by the edge of the stage, quickly followed by the rest of the group.
Ragatha placed the folder on the stage with a thwap. Zooble looked over to see that the pages had gone from razor thin to a massive stack when the folder was opened. On one hand, it had to contain more information than that video, but on the other…
They get close enough to read what’s on the first page.

“Take this document for example. You don't need to know where it is being stored or what file type it is in order to read it."
"It may look like a bunch of free floating papers, but technically speaking, this is just a text file applied to a 3D shape." Kinger looked towards Caine. "Correct?” he asked
Caine nodded. “And a fabric simulation!”
Kinger picked up a paper and bent it. “Oh, now that is nice”

"What about the internet?" Pomni asked "Do you think that it's possible to reach it?"
Kinger: "I'm sorry, but that's seems to be impossible. I can't be 100% sure without physically looking at the guts of this place, but it doesn't look like this server has the hardware needed for wireless connections. Wired connections should be possible, but someone on the outside would need to do that... And that's just the hardware, let alone the software necessary for that kind of communication"
Pomni: "I'm sorry, but doesn't server mean internet? Like, an internet server?"
Kinger: "Yes, websites are ran off servers, but servers don't equal internet."
(This portion goes out to everyone who thought that the internet could be an actual solution. Sorry folks, but computers don't equal internet. It takes more effort to make a device that can connect to things than to make one that can't)

TW/CW: Violence, graphic violence, blood, fighting, human trafficking, mentions of abuse, drug use, child abuse, sex trafficking, angst. So much angst.
MINORS DNI: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR CONTENT YOU CONSUME
A/N: Whew! I'm proud of this one! Many thanks to my bestest friend, Artemis, who himself has DID and helps me understand this condition and describe them (hopefully) more accurately! Chapter 2:
Inside Voices
(Steven, no…) Marc's voice groaned out, glaring at him through the shared reflection in the glass door.
"But Marc! I've lived here for ages and didn't know this shop was here!" Steven beamed, smiling widely. Thankfully the wireless headphones he had on made him look like he was on the phone, and not completely off his rocker…
Marc ran his hands through his curly black hair. (You have enough books!)
"But this store might have books I don't have!" He pointed out.
(Just let him look, hermano.) Jake sighed, his reflection staring up at Steven from a puddle on the ground.
"Yes, thank you, Jake. At least somebody encourages my hobby!" Steven huffed indignantly at Marc.
(Jake, stop babying him!)
(Hey, nothing wrong with having a hobby?) The man snorted.
Marc rolled his eyes and slumped his shoulders, he directed a tired glare back at Steven.
(You gonna go in or just stare at the front door?) He finally asked.
Steven grinned like an excited boy going into a candy shop.
Marc really needed to have a talk with Jake about this. Steven already had too many books in their flat!
Steven pulled the headphones out of his ears and shoved them in his pocket as he opened the door, nearly jumping when the bell dinged.
He looked around, rather impressed with how much was inside a small space. Steven almost jumped again when the clerk spoke.
"Hi! Welcome to Here Today Books!" She said cheerfully.
🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒
(I'm just saying, Steven… that's too many fucking books.) Marc said, crossing his arms at Steven through the reflection in the window across from his desk, cluttered with papers, folders, and books on various subjects of the Egyptian religious pantheon, architecture, etcetera.
"Oh, hush." Steven hummed, pushing his glasses up his nose as he examined the pages on one of the old books he held in his hand.
(Steven…) Marc sighed, exasperatedly.
"I know, I know." He sighed, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. The stubble there was getting rather coarse. Maybe he could talk Jake out of growing that mustache or goatee he was thinking about…
Steven looked over and picked up the bookmark, sighing deeply as he looked at the gold-tipped rose sealed so lovingly in the plastic. Small vine-luke designs had been penned into the colorful sheet of paper inside the plastic as well.
(Very Beauty and The Beast, no?) Jake mused, his reflection from the mirror on the desk looking at Steven with a cocky grin.
It helped them, they found, to have as many reflective surfaces as possible in their flat; it enabled them to talk to each other simultaneously and "see" one another. Sure they could all talk in the headspace, and when they co-fronted it was almost like they could feel each other; rubbing shoulders, as it were, but sometimes you just needed to see the other person, y'know? Outside of your own head? Shared head? The terms still confused poor Steven, at times.
"I s'pose." He hummed, holding the plastic in his fingers gently, as if it were made of the thinnest glass. Absentmindedly, he pulled the sleeve of his shirt up and looked at the inside of his left wrist.
A mark was there.
A rose, to be precise.
Sometimes it would look like it was wilting, other times it was blooming and vibrant… other times it was closed, not ready to bloom.
Right now, it was somewhere between wilting and blooming. He wasn't sure what it meant. He thought back to Marc's ex-wife, Layla. And how he practically fell head over heels with her when they first met.
He had hoped, with Layla, that she had a corresponding mark… but she didn't. Layla was one of the few who didn't have a mark, or in the very least it hadn't shown up yet. Which isn't entirely implausible… But… something happened. After escaping the Duat, coming back to life, fighting Ammit… finding out about Jake.
They just drifted apart. The sparks that may have been there snuffed out, any hints at romance gone from the equation. They all decided it was better to leave it at that.
Well, at least they were all still on friendly terms, Steven mused. Layla still spoke to he and Marc via phone, or even email. It took Steven forever to convince Marc to ditch that "old dinosaur piece of plastic" he called a phone, and stick with his touch-screen.
Except… Jake. Ah, Jake. Layla never fully trusted him.
(Steven.) Jake said, getting his attention, snapping him out of his thoughts.
"Hm?" He hummed, turning the bookmark over and over in his hand thoughtfully, eyes fluttering back to their mark on their wrist.
(It's my turn tonight.) Jake reminded him softly.
"Oh… right." He cringed. "Bollocks, I hate this…"
(I know, hermanito. But it has to be done, or the bad guys roam free…)
"All right, just… don't let me see any of it, yeah?" Steven sighed, placing the bookmark on the table as he put his hands in his lap.
(Of course.) Jake replied.
Marc stayed silent.
Suddenly, eyes flew closed, the jaw clenched; a bit of a sharp pain fluttered briefly through the brain at the sudden switching. They were getting better at seamless transitions, but sometimes some form of discomfort lingered. The body sat, almost like an empty vessel waiting to be filled. Whether it was five minutes or five seconds, it was unsure.
When the eyes opened again…
Jake was sitting where Steven sat. Steven's reflection wasn't in the mirror as Jake's had been, previously. He was left alone with Marc staring at him from the inky-black reflection in the window.
(I really hate that we have to do that to him.) Marc sighed, shaking his head.
"He's too gentle for our work, Marc." Jake said, clicking his tongue as he stood, walking over to the wardrobe in the corner and reaching out to grab his old leather coat. "He's too… good."
(I know.) Marc's reflection was in the fishtank now, where Gus the Second was swimming alongside… they really should think of a name for the other two.
Jake tugged the old worn garment on and pulled the gloves out of his jacket pockets with a sharp yank, flexing his fingers as they filled out the soft, well broken-in leather. Lastly, he pulled out that golf cap and slid it on his head, and looked at Marc.
(You don't have to see this, either, Marc.) He said to him.
(Somebody's gotta bear the weight with you, brother.) Marc said intently.
"Gracias por eso, hermano." Jake mumbled, twirling the flat's keys in his fingers as he walked to the front door.
🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒
He sat, kneeling on the rooftop, his body hunched in a way that made him look like a gargoyle, unflinching and unmoving in his gaze; the cape gifted to him flared out almost like a long, tattered set of broken wings.
He wasn’t sure why he decided here of all places was a good place to talk. Why here? What drew him here? Was it the lingering joy and comfort Steven felt when he came in earlier that day?
The sign was hand-painted and in need of a new coat. Flecks of it had chipped away, the exposed wood beneath bleached by years of exposure. But… why was the bookshop important enough to stand outside now?
He looked down below, the curtains were pulled back still in the flat above, old lightbulbs casting a soft, orangish glow to everything inside. He could barely see from this vantage point across the street the boxes of books and book stacks lying on a desk in front of the window. Small knick knacks lined the sills, a hanging plant pot on the outside containing flowers of different kinds, slightly wilted from the lack of sun from the past few days, and now the night.
He stirred when he watched the young woman inside walk to the window in the living room and close the curtains; then tracked her movements as she went about her nightly rituals.
She seemed relaxed. Comfortable. Safe.
She didn't need protection tonight.
He felt the air chill around him, seeping through the wrappings of his armor.
“Jake Lockley.”
There it was. The voice he was waiting for. The voice that always knocked him away from his personal thoughts. The voice that told him of his duties during the night.
Khonshu.
“Yes, father?” Jake asked, standing up, turning to see the large imposing silhouette of a gaunt man, enshrouded in ancient, wispy linen wraps, a tattered shawl hanging from his bony shoulders, clenched in his fist; in place of a head was the dessicated and fleshless bone of a bird skull, small web-like tendrils wafting about here or there. Large, eyeless sockets fixed him in a crushing gaze, the skull tilting in an almost inquisitive manner.
(I wish you’d stop calling him that…) Marc grumbled from within.
“Have you located the evil-doers I sent you after?” Khonshu’s ancient and ethereal voice grated out.
“Yes. I plan on taking them out tonight.” Jake replied dutifully.
Khonshu tilted his head at Jake, and stood from where he sat on the aircon unit. “Now… Why are you here? This is not where you usually prefer to speak with me.”
“I… don’t know.” Jake admitted softly. “Felt like I had to be here.”
“Hmm.” The god hummed, stopping to stand next to Jake, looking down at the flat below. “Indeed.”
“Was there… anything else, father?” Jake asked, looking up at him.
“No. You can leave. I will issue new orders when our quarry is dead and dealt with.”
“Of course.” Jake bowed his head, pressing his fist over the moon on his chest; sparing one last glance down at the woman before walking away, leaping to another rooftop with superhuman strength.
Khonshu stayed. Observing, just for a moment longer, at the woman inside the safety of her home.
“Interesting.” He mused to himself, stamping his staff down and vanishing in a haze of mist.
🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒
Jake panted, pulling one of his darts out of the chest of the man who had tried to previously shoot him just now. He sheathed the weapon and approached the shipping container, hesitating for a moment before smashing the lock open with his bare fist and hauling the heavy doors open.
Inside were half a dozen women and young girls, and children. Some of them naked, others half-dressed. Many of them were dirty and half starved, injuries evident on their poor bodies.
He noticed how they all flinched, backing away from him.
“I won’t hurt you.” He said, in a tone as soft as he could possibly manage, trying to ease their worries. “I’m here to save you.”
Jake leaned down and pulled the jacket off the dead body of the man he had just killed, stepping over the corpse to the young woman nearest to him.
She was clad only in her underwear, bruises and track marks lining her body. He draped the jacket over her shoulders, zipping it closed for her as he guided her arms through the sleeves.
“The police are on their way. You’ll all be safe, soon.” He said, his glowing white eyes fixed in the black abyss of his mask immediately zeroed in on three women, clinging their arms around a group of small children.
The youngest couldn’t have been older than three years old. Her eyes cold, far too ancient and haunted for one so young, clouded by the things she’d been forced to endure for the profit of her traffickers; her tiny body already bearing the scars of the abuse and trauma. Jake’s fist balled at his sides as he forced his breathing to try and calm; adrenaline surging through him again, a hot coal of rage dropping deep into the pit of his stomach.
He wished he could kill them all over again. He wished he could make them all suffer in ways they could barely process for the things they’d done. He wanted to–
His cloak was tugged on, snapping him out of his seething.
He looked down, and a small boy, all skin and bones looked up at him. He looked to be about seven. Could be older, as malnourishment can inhibit growth. His big green eyes looked up at Jake as he wrapped the edge of his cloak around his shoulders like a blanket, his dirty and grimy fingers clinging to the blood-soaked material, seeking comfort he so desperately needed. Jake felt his heart crack in two. He looked almost like...
He closed his eyes for a moment and kneeled, getting as eye level with the boy as he could.
“You’re safe now. They can’t hurt you anymore.” Jake said, his voice quiet, almost broken. He reached for a ratty blanket on the ground and covered the little boy with it, the sight of him covered in a bloody cape almost too much for him to bear.
He felt his breathing hitch when the little boy smiled up at him, gap-toothed and happy. He handed the boy off to a woman who looked to only be maybe nineteen.
“Stay…” He cleared his throat, looking at everyone within the container, standing back to his full imposing height.
“Stay here while I make sure it’s safe and I got them all. Someone will be here soon to get you all out of here.”
“Thank you.” One of the women sobbed quietly, clutching onto what looked to be her own child. They looked too similar for them to be anything but related.
Jake turned, his cape flowing out behind him like a white shadow as he stalked into the warehouse beyond, his fists already tight; the spiked knuckles on the back of his hands ready for blows he was all too eager to deliver.
He stepped over bodies, beaten, broken. Lifeless.
All at his hand. They deserved worse.
The eerie quiet of the cavernous space was only interrupted by the tinkling of chains suspended from the rafters, wind whistling through unseen cracks.
He could hear the sirens in the distance closing in, but he didn’t relax. He wouldn’t. Not until he was sure.
Not until he knew they were all dead.
Jake’s hands trembled with anticipation as that coal of rage ignited into an inferno, burning hot and low in his belly, sending sparks through his bloodstream. He was so far into that haze of red, he missed the man rushing him with a kabar knife.
He must have missed that one, the coward was probably hiding the moment the carnage broke out.
The moment he turned, he felt the blade slip easily through the wrappings of his dark armor, piercing the flesh and organs beneath, the pain tearing through his body like a macabre tsunami.
He brought his fist out, slamming the spiked knuckles into the face of the man.
The coppery scent of blood, the crunch of bones and cartilage filled his nose and were deafeningly loud in his ears. He was sure he watched his eyeball dislodge, hanging over the crushed and bloody expanse of his cheek as his body was sent flying into the cargo loader nearby.
The sound of his bones turning almost to powder overpowered the haunting ambience of the dark lair.
Jake marched over to him and gripped him by the shirt, rearing his fist back for another punch, even as his body hung limp in his grasp.
Only… he couldn’t land the blow. He just couldn’t. It was one thing to kill to protect. But it was another to beat a corpse that he’d already wrought with one blow. His ears picked up the sounds of shouting, sirens, bootfall. A helicopter whirred above, spotlight shining at the carnage below.
He stood, clutching at the knife still sticking out of his side as he dragged his feet, pulling the shell of his body outside, where he was met with armored police officers, wearing what he assumed was some kind of riot gear. The pain in his side was maddening, he almost didn’t hear them demand he kneel. But he did hear a woman cry.
He lifted his gaze to see the woman he’d handed the boy off to; the child still clutched in her arms as they looked over at him, their eyes locking with his.
“He saved us!” She cried.
“Don’t hurt him, please!” Another shouted.
“He’s a nice man!” A child sobbed, clinging to the emergency blanket around her frail body.
Jake felt like he could cry, he felt his heart swell to bursting; not able to tear his gaze away from the innocents he’d saved, that he killed for. Not even when one of the officers approached him, gripping his elbow to keep him steady.
The older man sighed, unable to cuff the man that the human trafficking victims were shouting and crying accolades for. Even if he apparently killed all these monsters bare-handed. “Come on, lad. Let’s get you looked at. We can’t leave that knife in ya.”
“I’m fine.” Jake mumbled, looking at the ground. His shoulders slumped.
“Like hell you are.” The officer turned and shouted for a medic.
“Perdóname, mi corazón." Jake muttered to himself. To someone else.
But as the man carrying the equipment bag jogged towards him, Jake gripped the handle of the knife and wrenched it free in one tug, blood spurting from the wound.
“Good God!” The officer gasped, reaching out to press his hand over the gushing wound. “Are you insane, boy?”
“Yes.” Jake mumbled, pulling his hand away from him, with gentle care that betrayed the violence his bloody fingers had wrought mere moments ago. He felt the wound close, the magic and blessed armor already performing its duty. Just as he had, so violently.
Jake straightened his posture as the medic and the officers backed away in a strange mixture of fascination, horror, and awe.
“Who… what are you?” The medic breathed.
Jake turned away, his gaze to the sky.
“I’m Moon Knight.”
And with that final goodbye, he leapt up, disappearing into the blackness and depths of the night, his heart heavy but relieved, cloak streaking across the shadows, as if to chase them away.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SENIOR WIRELESS OPERATOR JACK PHILLIPS

John George Phillips was born the 11th of April, 1887, 138 years ago. He was one of two operators of the Marconi wireless system aboard the RMS Titanic during her maiden voyage. During the sinking, from the moment he was ordered to send the distress call to shortly before the Titanic fully sunk (around 12:15 to 2:17 am), he sent the distress signal (CQD and then the newer SOS) and information on the ship's situation and coordinates to any ship in range. He is not counted among the survivors, and most likely died in the North Atlantic Ocean.
One of my favourite facts about the Titanic is that the wireless machine broke down the day before the sinking and Jack Phillips and Harold Bride (The other wireless operator, he's also so cool and i missed his birthday this year :( next year i'll get it) fixed it themselves even though protocol said they had to wait until the ship reached land and have a professional from the company do it. If they hadn't gone against orders to do this, it's possible that the survivor count for Titanic (around 700) would've been much less (probably the Californian would have eventually figured it out, but that's another story).
link to Harold Bride's firsthand account of that night's events, given 4 days after the sinking (article is the top lefthand one) (note that although Bride says here that he saw Phillips' dead body in Collapsible B, evidence shows this was likely not the case and Bride changed his story later on, saying he had only been told the dead body in Collapsible B was Phillips and did not actually see him. ofc that doesn't mean it's NOT true, but more accounts say no than yes)
#happy 138th birthday king <3#i have so much to say about Jack Phillips but in short he was so cool and a hero#rms titanic#titanic#jack phillips

Scientists Gingerly Tap into Brain's Power From: USA Today - 10/11/04 - page 1B By: Kevin Maney
Scientists are developing technologies that read brainwave signals and translate them into actions, which could lead to neural prosthetics, among other things. Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems' Braingate is an example of such technology: Braingate has already been deployed in a quadriplegic, allowing him to control a television, open email, and play the computer game Pong using sensors implanted into his brain that feed into a computer. Although "On Intelligence" author Jeff Hawkins praises the Braingate trials as a solid step forward, he cautions that "Hooking your brain up to a machine in a way that the two could communicate rapidly and accurately is still science fiction." Braingate was inspired by research conducted at Brown University by Cyberkinetics founder John Donoghue, who implanted sensors in primate brains that picked up signals as the animals played a computer game by manipulating a mouse; the sensors fed into a computer that looked for patterns in the signals, which were then translated into mathematical models by the research team. Once the computer was trained on these models, the mouse was eliminated from the equation and the monkeys played the game by thought alone. The Braingate interface consists of 100 sensors attached to a contact lens-sized chip that is pressed into the surface of the cerebral cortex; the device can listen to as many as 100 neurons simultaneously, and the readings travel from the chip to a computer through wires. Meanwhile, Duke University researchers have also implanted sensors in primate brains to enable neural control of robotic limbs. The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) is pursuing a less invasive solution by funding research into brain machine interfaces that can read neural signals externally, for such potential applications as thought-controlled flight systems. Practical implementations will not become a reality until the technology is sufficiently cheap, small, and wireless, and then ethical and societal issues must be addressed. Source

i just went on a 2 hour long adventure to find out obscure pokemon information. again. normal tuesday for me at this point

one of the secondhand japanese emeralds i purchased, i noticed had the MysticTicket and Eon Ticket in the bag, the items to go to navel rock for ho-oh/lugia and to southern island to get one of the latis, latias or latios, respectively. i went to go check the wonder card on the save (gen 3 can only hold one at a time) and it's for the mysticticket (しんぴのチケット)!
of course i was curious about the event that distributed this mysticticket so i looked up the japanese title and managed to find an archive.org link for the event from the original, official pokemon website. but i was surprised to see the eon ticket and latias/latios prominently also displayed on the page, and with emerald listed as a possible game for it to be distributed to, no less!
it's relatively common knowledge that international versions of emerald can't receive the eon ticket because they don't have the original mystery event system in ruby/sapphire which allow it to be received, simply replaced by the new wireless mystery gift system. the only way to get the eon ticket in international emerald is through record mixing with a ruby or sapphire game with the ticket. i assumed this is how the eon ticket on this emerald was received, if it wasn't straight up hacked, but now i wasn't sure since if the previous owner truly went to this japanese event in 2006/2007, they could have also picked up the eon ticket according to the webpage...?
well i talked to some folk over at project pokemon and it turns out the mystery event system is still present in japanese emerald specifically, and not only that, they likely had a custom ROM they used in store to distribute the eon ticket to both RS and emerald! there's no photos and certainly no dump of it online, but it's likely there was a menu where they could pick what kind of game they were distributing to, similar to the custom ROM used for international RS eon ticket distributions that had language selection, which we DO surprisingly have a picture of, from a 2004 event in germany:

this event is really obscure for some reason? i had to talk to experts on the subject for more information on it, the serebii eventdex page for the eon ticket doesn't list it, and the bulbapedia page for the eon ticket doesn't mention it either, which may be remedied now that i've talked to some people about it in the near future. but yeah this was a fun deep dive
it should be noted that even though it would make a whole lot of sense through environmental storytelling that the events are fully legitimate, considering the rest of the file is fully legitimate (checked through multiple softwares), well-played and well-loved, and if they went to this event they would have gotten both tickets at the same time, but i have no way of knowing for sure since i wasn't there! however miraculously they never actually traveled to either island and all the legendaries are still up for grabs... so just for the sake of my own fun i'm going to believe these are real and not injected onto the cart, and go and catch navel rock ho-oh/lugia and one of the southern island latis for myself! :]

thank you Z.Z whoever you are!! you have a really cool file by the way, the random shiny zubat from granite cave and the ev trained alakazam that you obviously put a shitton of time into breeding considering the numerous boxes of abra and dittos in your PC are super cool!
#pokemon#pokemon emerald#pokemon rse#rse#kiki was here#kiki.txt#kiki plays games#i've injected these events on my own games before#but having a likely legitimate copy of them just feels ethereal#though nothing will ever beat the gen 3 japanese mew i have#but that's a different story lol#long post

Trump is trying to destroy public media, and that’s very bad
I know the news is constantly overwhelming rn, but one thing I’m not seeing talked abt enough is how Trump has been systematically trying to remove already appropriated money to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for public media. Today he asked Congress to claw back over a billion dollars that was meant to go to public broadcasters for the next two years. That money goes to PBS and NPR, but do you know who REALLY benefits from that money that this is really going to hurt? Your local public radio or tv station.
When NPR and PBS testified in congress a while back, they brought president of Alaska Public Media Ed Ulman with them. Why? Bc Alaska has mostly small-town rural public radio stations. Not only are small-town stations the backbone of their community with important local news that they won’t find anywhere else, they also keep people alive. Here’s an excerpt from a story:
Ulman, of Alaska Public Media, said oftentimes public media is the only option for people who need access to emergency broadcasts, especially in rural areas. "We provide potentially life-saving warnings and alerts that are crucial for Alaskans who face threats ranging from extreme weather to earthquakes, landslides and even volcanoes," he said. “Nationwide, our public television interconnection system supports the PBS Warning, Alert, Response Network, a critical pathway for the distribution of wireless energy emergency alerts to cell phones," Ulman said.
One of those stations is KYUK in Bethel, the first and oldest native-owned station in the US which broadcasts daily in English AND Yup’ik bc many in the region do not speak English. 70% of their funding comes from the CBP.
KYUK is one of the higher figures I’ve seen when looking into CBP impacts at different stations around the US.
Here are some others— KCCU radio is in Lawton, OK, may lose 16.7% of their budget. “At KCCU Radio, we provide critical emergency alerts that can save lives during severe weather events. In 2024 alone, we broadcast over 366 weather alerts, including tornado warnings, flash flood warnings, and child abduction emergency alerts. These alerts are indispensable for community safety.”
KSUT in Ignacio, CO will lose 20% of their budget, according to their website, “KSUT Tribal Radio's service area includes extremely remote areas with limited or no internet or phone service. As such, it is often a lifeline to a primarily Native American listening audience.”
WPSU in central Pennsylvania also stands to lose 20%— they broadcast to over 1.3 million people in a mostly rural part of Pennsylvania. I can go on like this all day. Research your local stations, they probably have a page breaking down cost.
This is a long way to say that by undoing CBP funding, we are harming the most vulnerable communities that depend on public broadcasting the most.
If this is something you care about, now is the best time to act. The House is expected to vote on this in days. Head to https://protectmypublicmedia.org to learn more about how you can help.
#us politics#public media#protect public media#if this goes into effect this will destroy so many communities#including ones I deeply love#if you have the means to act please do#thoughtsfromtheprimordialsoup

Bossware Surveillance Buildings
A case study on technologies for behavioral monitoring and profiling using motion sensors and wireless networking infrastructure inside offices and other facilities"
Wolfie Christl, Cracked Labs, November 2024
This case study is part of the ongoing project “Surveillance and Digital Control at Work” (2023-2024) led by Cracked Labs, which aims to explore how companies use personal data on workers in Europe, together with AlgorithmWatch, Jeremias Prassl (Oxford), UNI Europa and GPA, funded by the Austrian Arbeiterkammer.
Case study “Tracking Indoor Location, Movement and Desk Occupancy in the Workplace” (PDF, 25 pages) Summary
As offices, buildings and other corporate facilities become networked environments, there is a growing desire among employers to exploit data gathered from their existing digital infrastructure or additional sensors for various purposes. Whether intentionally or as a byproduct, this includes personal data about employees, their movements and behaviors.
Technology vendors are promoting solutions that repurpose an organization’s wireless networking infrastructure as a means to monitor and analyze the indoor movements of employees and others within buildings. While GPS technology is too imprecise to track indoor location, Wi-Fi access points that provide internet connectivity for laptops, smartphones, tables and other networked devices can be used to track the location of these devices. Bluetooth, another wireless technology, can also be used to monitor indoor location. This can involve Wi-Fi access points that track Bluetooth-enabled devices, so-called “beacons” that are installed throughout buildings and Bluetooth-enabled badges carried by employees. In addition, employers can utilize badging systems, security cameras and video conferencing technology installed in meeting rooms for behavioral monitoring, or even environmental sensors that record room temperature, humidity and light intensity. Several technology vendors provide systems that use motion sensors installed under desks or in the ceilings of rooms to track room and desk attendance.
This case study explores software systems and technologies that utilize personal data on employees to monitor room and desk occupancy and track employees’ location and movements inside offices and other corporate facilities. It focuses on the potential implications for employees in Europe. To illustrate wider practices, it investigates systems for occupancy monitoring and indoor location tracking offered by Cisco, Juniper, Spacewell, Locatee and other technology vendors, based on an analysis of technical documentation and other publicly available sources. It briefly addresses how workers resisted the installation of motion sensors by their employers. This summary presents an overview of the findings of this case study….

18:18 GMT
[18:17] ARKAngel has started a call.
The incoming call alert had woken him up. Miles sat up with a start and nearly fell on his face as he climbed out of bed. He scrambled to the computer and clicked on the green ‘accept’ button displayed on the screen. It was a video call, with Maria’s face showing signs of fatigue and stress as she was manipulating the touch controls of a console. From what he could gather, it seemed as if her tablet was docked to the console.
“I’m sorry, I fell asleep.” Miles said, rubbing the back of his head. Maria’s attention turned to the tablet and her eyes widened.
“I need your help!” Maria said frantically. “I’m trying to get this escape pod open for Shadow but the passwords that Grandfather gave me aren’t working!”
“Escape pod?” Miles’ ears raised. “Is something happening on the ARK? Why aren’t you leaving through the flight deck?”
“They’ve taken it over.” Maria whispered.
“Who’s ‘they’?”
“I don’t know! They seem to be Federation military though. They just came and started shooting. They’ve killed anyone that’s tried to put up a fight. I managed to get to the panic room at the hospital level and got in contact with Grandfather. He sent Shadow and told me that Shadow had to be podded out.”
“They must have changed the passwords. There has to be some sort of low-level emergency system though. Who the Hell password locks an escape pod system?!” He watched as Maria pressed something on her tablet’s screen.
[18:19] ARKAngel would like to hand over device control.
A window popped up on his screen showing a mirror of Maria’s tablet. He clicked on an on-screen control to return to the main interface. Then he pulled up the tablet’s terminal, entering a command to get a list of network interfaces. There were two active, the wireless network that Maria was connected to, but also a connection to the console she was working at by the physical link. Miles looked at the node address that the tablet had from that link, then the gateway address. He left the terminal and opened her tablet’s browser, entering that gateway address.
He was greeted with the same login page that Maria was trying to get through. GRobotnik was filled in for the username field and the password field had a red border around it.
“You tried his credentials and your own?” Miles asked, the call was still ongoing.
“Yes, neither of those worked!” Maria said.
“I’m going to try something. If the system administrator here was an idiot, this might work. If they weren’t, well then I’ll have to think of something else.” Miles took a deep breath and replaced the input on the login page. He filled out his username of MPrower and the password he had used when he was on the ARK last. The password prompt’s border turned green and then the pod control system came up.
“What did you do?” Maria’s eyes widened.
“Logged in as myself.” The fox raised his ears. “I guess the administrator didn’t zero out my account, and I’d have to guess that your grandfather’s account was locked out as well as your own for some reason. Why they didn’t lock mine out as well, hard to say but it worked.” Maria knelt down out of sight.
“Come on Shadow!” She came back into view, the black and red mobian hedgehog partially visible as she walked him towards the pod.
“I can’t leave you here!” Shadow protested.
“They won’t hurt me.” Maria placated. “They’re here for you. They have to be. This way you’ll be safe.”
“Maria? Where are you sending him?” Miles asked.
“Anywhere that will be safe.” Maria’s voice came back out of frame.
“Crap. Hold on. It’s GPS programmed, isn’t it?” He took over the pod control system, getting a world map. On instinct, he scrolled with his mouse wheel until the airfield near High Wycombe was in view. He clicked on the tarmac and then the ‘Program’ button. “Is he loaded in?”
“Yes!” Maria moved back to the control station and he clicked on the ‘Pod Close’ button. Then he clicked on the ‘Launch Prep’ button. A lever popped up on the console. “What’s that supposed to be?”
“I don’t know. I have a ‘Launch’ button, maybe it’s an emergency backup. Are you ready?” Miles asked.
“Do it!” Maria said. The fox heard muffled gunshots and then a door opening. He saw Maria clutch the lever and then heard a male Ameri-Can voice yelling at her.
“Get your hands off that lever!”
His fingers tensed on the mouse as he moved towards the ‘Launch’ button. Right at that moment, the tablet mirror unexpectedly quit. Then he noticed Maria’s Harmony status was showing as offline.
“Damn it!” Miles lept out of his chair and scrambled out of his bedroom. He went into the hallway and skidded into the kitchen. No sign of his mother there. Looking out the living room window, he noticed that her car was gone but his father’s was there. His shoes thumped against the floor as he went for his father’s home office, seeing the light streaming under the door.
“Dad!” Miles thumped his fist against the door. Urgent footsteps could be heard, followed by the door unlocking.
“What is it?” Group Captain Artair Prower asked, raising his ears. “Is it your mother?”
“No!” Miles raised his eyes up. “Dad, Space Colony ARK is under attack. The Federation sent soldiers of some kind up there! Maria called me, she’s trying to get Shadow out of there but something’s happened! I heard shooting before she got kicked offline. You have to do something!”
“It didn’t sound like a drill?” Artair asked.
“No!” Miles grabbed his father’s hand. “Dad! She needs help!”
“All right. Calm down, son. This is going to be tricky. It’s a Federation space station, but perhaps-” He gestured for Miles to follow him in and picked up his desk phone, punching out a number.
“Jules, Artair. I’m coming back to headquarters. Call your brother. Tell him he needs to get our ambassador in Ottawa to contact the President, if not doing so himself. There’s something going wrong on Space Colony ARK, shots have been fired.” Miles could hear the surprise and apprehension coming from the hedgehog on the other line. “Yes, I know, it’s a major deviation from the chain of command but Sir Charles is the bloody Prime Minister. Get to it!”
Artair hung the phone up, grabbed his lanyard and slung it around his neck before getting his phone and keys. “I want you to grab that call recording and put it on your tablet and phone. You’re coming with me to headquarters, Miles.”
