How I Feel As A WLW and WLM Reader & Fan

So. I’m one of the members of lovestruck who’s big on both wlw and wlm on the app. Although im more known probably for wlm seeing as that’s where more of my favorites are from.

But honestly, this is kinda more how I feel personally from my PERSONAL experiences on being in both sides of the fandoms.

Yours might be different, but this is my experience. So, yea. This is from my POV.

The fandom is honestly so separated it’s hard to enjoy almost anything.

Now I have a better experience with the wlm side than i so the wlw side. By a landslide. And it’s not because i read more male LIs. Because trust me, I hate multiple male LIs, more than i do female, actually.

But honestly my wlm side friends are amazing. We share lots of favorites, especially Cal, which is how I met some of them. My friend introduced me to her friends who liked Cal and yeah. Here we are. If you’re my friend blame Steph lol.

But back to the post, my wlm are all so nice and supportive, in fact all of them, as far as i remember, read the wlw and wlnb routes.

So honestly, I talk with them more, whether it be ranting, talking about an LI or just talking because we’re friends.

But my experience with the wlw, is more rocky. I’m always finding myself to have to watch what i say around them so i don’t make them mad. Even with the blog im a ghostwriter for, wlw-lovestruck-fiction, go follow it lol.

I often get snapped at whenever i rant, or say i don’t like a certain LI. I find myself getting attacked for ranting about a guy LI at times because “Loreleis route got treated badly” yea, so did every other VN LI, except Juliette. So you can’t say Lorelei without saying the others, especially renzei.

And if I say i don’t like a certain female LI, I find myself getting attacked a lot for just not liking her. For example, I don’t like Runa and OH MY GOD. The amount of people who got pissy about that. They, some of them anyways, kept trying to change my mind and make me see Runa as a victim and she’s an innocent lil angel. Which pisses me off. Because she isn’t.

There are plenty of guy LIs my friends love, Astraeus for example, I hate him. But he’s one of my friends favorite. So instead of trying to make me change my mind, she accepts my opinion. She doesn’t try to make me like him, and I don’t try to make her hate him. It’s a personal opinion.

There’s over 100 LIs, 111 to be exact. So why do I have to like Runa? Or Viv? There’s so many LIs for a REASON. Because not everyone is gonna love the same LI. I don’t like Runa, Viv, Aurora, Xenia, Astraeus, Clyde, Joaquin, Chance, Reiner, or Antares. And that’s okay. Because it’s MY opinion.

I can’t express my opinions for LIs on the wlw side without getting attacked for it, or getting pissy responses.

I can’t say I like a certain guy LI, or i’m upset he’s ending *cough* SASCHA *cough*

I’ll also just sit through conversations of the wlw fanbase just expressing their absolute HATRED for some of my favorite LIs, but if i don’t say i’ll bend over backwards for Xenia, I get attacked.

And it honestly, makes me want to just leave the wlw side. I have a couple of friends there, and i’m a ghostwriter for a blog, but I just can’t stand that side at times.

Being on both sides of the fandoms really sucks because I feel like I have to just pick a side at times, because of just how separated this fandom is.

Almost no ons cares about ANYTHING unless it affects their LIs.

All the wlm dropping like flies lately? Almost all i’ve seen from the wlw side is happiness and laughter that there’s less wlm routes, because that leaves more room for them and their routes.

Me and some of my friends were talking, and she said this

Which as you can see, I agreed. It really feels like the wlm side of this fandom is being kicked out and is just unwanted and unwelcomed. And that may be how it is for some wlw fans.

But lovestruck isn’t a wlw exclusive app. It never has been. And won’t ever be. It was always wlm and wlw. and now mlm and wlmb.

So it’s unfair to treat the wlm fans like they have no place here. When the app is jusy as much their as it is for wlw.

There are times where I just don’t want to be apart of this fandom because of how I get treated. On either side. If this is what it’s like being a wlm member, I don’t want to stay. But I don’t want to be on the wlw side if this is how they act. It’s exhausting.

In conclusion, being on both sides of this fandom sucks, because it truly feels like I need to pick a side, because you can’t like both apparently, and at times it just makes me want to delete the game and just leave the fandom because it’s annoying to feel like I have to pick a certain side of LIs.

And once again, these are just MY personal experiences with the two sides. It maybe different for you, but that’s how it is for me.

TL;DR: I am allowed to like what routes I like and not like the ones I don't - I owe no one, especially an anon, an explanation.

To the anon who so kindly asked what I have against Bram - it's simple, I did not want to romance a bear. I found his first season to be completely uninspiring and a joke even at times. While I am a wlm reader, this does not mean that I love all wlm routes, and when there is a wlm route that I don't like - I should be allowed to have that opinion without being barraged with graphic and gory photos.

I am allowed to like what routes I like and not like the ones I don't - I owe no one, especially you, an explanation.

I could have easily blocked and reported these submitted posts, which I have. But once again, I am reminded about how toxic this fandom is - and how I do not face this toxicity in other fandoms. And I am so absolutely tired of all this hate being heaped on myself and @violettduchess one of my dear friends, for reasons unknown to us.

Just another reason why I am stepping further and further away from the Lovestruck fandom. While there are so many truly wonderful people in this fandom who make it what it is, there is this dark toxicity that just keeps pushing me away, more and more.

I just wanna say, because i did see some people saying stuff about the wlm, and here’s how I personally see it

1. “Lorelei got shitted on” yes yes, I agree 100%. I will never laugh or make fun of Lorelei fans for that, she deserved better. I’m not a fan of her route, so I haven’t read almost any of it, but she did deserved better from what i heard happened in her route. But I feel like the fact that it happened to Lorelei, the wlm would understand how it feels when it happens to the newer guy LIs time and time again. When I complained about Sascha, I wasn’t trying to make it seem like this never happened to the female LIs, and if the anon who talked about Lorelei thought that, i’m sorry.

2. “The wlm can be toxic at times and hate on the female LIs and attack others for their opinions”. I apologize for those people’s behavior. I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with those fans. I know a lot of wlm readers who are so nice, and it hurts to know that some of y’all don’t meet some of the nicer side. I promise not all wlm readers are like that. And for that anon who said they deleted lovestruck because of how toxic some of the wlm can be, i am truly sorry. I personally don’t like Runa’s route because of her attitude (i don’t like Chance either actually, so i’m not a hypocrite, promise lol), but I will never attack anyone for liking her.

3. “the wlm attack female and nonbinary LIs because they’re not male” It truly isn’t all of us. i promise. I, personally, may be bratty or do attack female Lis at times when i don’t like them, but it’s truly because i just don’t like the Li. I do the same so some males (in fact, I hate more men LIs, than i do female). No LI or their fans deserves to be attacked for being themselves, and if you’ve gotten attacked for it i’m sorry.

4. “some wlm go on and be homophobic about double wlw or wlnb LIs” We, the fans with a brain, don’t claim them. I don’t. I don’t care if lovestruck releases a women and enby at the same time. For RP, I just don’t read RP so i don’t care, and for EAA, i love everything from EAA, so I don’t care. I would’ve preferred Omar over Lavinia a little cause I just LOVE his character, but I still love Lavinia. And I’m sorry some of yall have to see it.

I hate how the wlm can be toxic, but it’s not just the one side, both sides are toxic, and here’s how my friend said it

I really wanted to like Lovestruck but they're so bad at gay stories between men. Like I can barely count how many stories they have on one hand. I remember asking them on twitter almost a year ago and they said theres no audience for it. :c

That’s fair!! They only have one mlm story at the moment. They’re demographic is very wlw and wlm so that’s why I like it.

I hope that in the near future they’ll put out more mlm books.

My guess for why routes are ending is maybe cynical, but I think it's just money. Routes that don't make enough in a free to play model get shut down. Also, lovestruck's audience has pretty clearly shifted to be more wlw - the vast majority of fan attention is on female characters like xenia, vivienne, yvette,etc. One rough way to estimate routes is review numbers, and they make me think lucien, for example, probably won't get a s6. He only has 26 reviews on his s5, compared to Runa's 85.

Well, the first explanation that came to my mind was popularity as well. With Zain, I can believe that there are less people reading his route that Liora’s or Runa’s. 

On the other hand, he actually has more reviews than Lucien, but Lucien didn’t get an end card of death after his season 5. 

Same with Remy. Again, if we compare the amount of reviews, he has a lot more than Zoe, yet Zoe’s route is still ’To be continued’ after season 4, unlike Remy.

Then there’s the thing with wlw routes you mentioned. I’ve been thinking about this too and I wouldn't go as far as to say that wlw players are the majority. I just don’t think we have enough data to claim that. Here, on Tumblr, wlw routes definitely get more attention. But the Lovestruck community on Tumblr is only a small part of the entire Lovestruck fanbase. And Tumblr kind of has the reputation for being a gay escapist heaven (hahaha), sooo there might be more wlm Lovestruck players who we simply don’t see on this platform.

If we look at the number of reviews again, I can’t say that there is a clear shift to either side. Sometimes female characters have more reviews, sometimes male characters do.

But there’s another thing I was considering. There was this article about mobile game monetisation which stated that only 5% of players spend money on in-game purchases, but those purchases make up 43% of the game’s revenue. The exact numbers might differ, but the idea is that a very big part of the money mobile games (like Lovestruck) make comes from a very small but very dedicated part of the fanbase. And since the market for wlw games is comparatively small, wlw players of Lovestruck might be more willing to spend money, making Lovestruck more willing to make female routes despite the fact that a big part (maybe even the majority) of the players are wlm.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand. The main reason I got so upset with Remy and Zain situation was not because they got cut short, but because of how abruptly and suddenly it happened. If I found out that Zain’s season 5 would be his last one earlier, sure, I’d be sad that one of my favourite stories is coming to an end. But reading his route without suspecting anything and then suddenly being greeted by the end card of death, THAT left me lost and frustrated. 

I don’t know if the reason behind this is production problems or if there are bigger changes happening behind the scenes.  Maybe Lovestruck really is shifting their focus to wlw routes. But whatever it was, the reason why they never announced that these were going to be Remy and Zain’s final seasons is beyond me. Like, wouldn’t that actually draw more attention to them? Bring in a bigger crowd? Isn’t that what they want?

Honestly, while I do agree that routes getting cut short sucks and that people are allowed to be upset over it, as a panromantic person I'm not really mad that LS has fewer and fewer male routes. There are so many apps that are specifically for wlm that have amazing characters and stories, while wlw apps are scarse. It's also very logical from a business perspective. LS started out as a wlm dominated space with just enough wlw rep to draw in wlw fans. Then the word spread that LS has amazing wlw stories which drew people starving for good representation and boom! Suddenly the majority of fans are wlw so saphic routes are doing way better than wlm routes, and after losing so much money and writers after the strike, they can't afford to keep up routes that don't earn them enough money when they can spend those resources on working on a wlw route that is almost guaranteed to do better. So yeah, while it sucks that the guys are getting the short end of the stick on LS, it makes sense. And if I find myself wanting to romance a new guy, I can always open a similar wlm app(cybrid's ikemen sengoku is one of my personal favourites if anyone is interested) and I just can't do that if I want a new wlw story.

That's a valid perspective, anon. I do agree with that last part... finding apps with good wlw stories is a bit of a hunt. Still, even if there are fewer male routes, it still sucks that Lovestruck is rushing their endings or their plots. I understand why people are upset that Rafe’s route is with the female mc instead of the male mc, I was disappointed myself, but I feel like all the hate people who wanted him with the female mc were getting was unnecessary

Immortal Heart Society isn't one of my favorite series (shocker, huh?), so I wasn't terribly upset Rafe was paired with female mc to start. I'm sure Lovestruck had a reason for pairing Rafe with female mc before male mc - Lovestruck being Lovestruck, I'm sure the reason would make sense to absolutely no one. But I'd think it has more to do with Cash getting canned early and they wanted to keep one wlm route in the series.
