The World of Smallville #1-4
April/July 1988
By John Byrne, Kurt Schaffenberger, Alfredo Alcala, Petra Scotese, and Carrie Spiegle.
The 50th anniversary celebration continues with a mini-series centered about Smallville.
Clark discovers some secrets about his mother, and then remembers all the trauma Lana had to go through since the day she was born.
SCORE: 8
Don't let the score fool you... this is recommended reading!
Of course, I couldn't score it a perfect ten, because the story is not consistent in quality, but if you only had to read half of it, it would need to be the first two issues. The whole Martha-Dan marriage was more addictive than a telenovela.
Then the mini-series slowly starts dealing with the Millennium retcons.
The Manhunters caused the blizzard that kept baby Clark hidden for five months.
Lana was only obsessed with Clark because she didn't know she was being manipulated by the Manhunters.
And other small details.
Schaffenberger was an outdated, yet very fitting option for the first half of the story. While it didn't feel like a Superman comic, it was exactly what it needed to be, for me to get engaged with the story.
Then the story starts incorporating almost everything we already knew, because the rest of that story was pretty recent (except for the details on how Lana's parents were killed).
The most out of place moments were whole pages that were traced from original art from Byrne and Ordway. They are so iconic that Schaffenberger copying them felt unearned.
The last two episodes felt too repetitive and at this point, unnecessary. It has only been four months since the end of Millennium... it was simply too soon.
In any case, overall, I loved the mini-series. Perhaps not as much as "World of Krypton", but it was very entertaining. I completely forgot that Martha was married before.
The only thing I felt they should have included here is the death of Harry Kent. It was mentioned a few times, but never really explained.

While investing a case, Bruce goes on an undercover mission as a carnival worker at a small town carnival because he suspects other workers there are related to a larger crime ring.
After the Daily Planet is bought out by lex Luther , Clark decides to quit and has to move back home to Smallville. While he's happy to see his family and childhood friends again he also feels like he's changed and isn't as fulfilled by the simple life anymore. On top of this it becomes much harder to keep being superman. Smallville doesn't have corrupt officials or alien invasions they need help with, rendering him useless . He doesn't even feel useful on the farm and can't find a job he enjoys to make some money of his own and leave the house.
As a way to get his mind off things and cheer himself up he starts visiting the local fair. While there, he is instantly drawn to a handsome carnival worker who definitely doesn't belong in a small town like this.

Do you know what always gets me about Smallville? The damn moral ambiguity of the characters. What I expected going in? Young Superman, superhero stuff, evil Lex Luthor, some teenage drama. What did I get instead? I spent half the show hating Jonathan Kent and Lionel Luthor, plus being exasperated & mildly to very annoyed at Clark. Show's "heroes" doing some really shady/frowned upon things, again - mildly to very annoying (Lana Lang, omg).
Meanwhile Lex Luthor turned out not to be evil, but a sad, traumatised man doing his damnest to be good, only to get (metaphorically or not) slapped for his efforts any time someone deemed he's done something wrong. A "monster" created not by natural proclivity for violence and evil, but by being denied humanity over and over again. A character I will love till the end of time.
All of that in a show for teenagers. Truly mind-boggling stuff. They don't make TV like this anymore.

Lex: Jonathan Kent is a good man, unlike my father...
Me: *holds his face so tenderly between my hands* baby ur so dumb..... the only difference between Kent and your dad is that he is a "traditional values" conservative and your dad is a mega corporate conservative. They're both right wing and hate you bc you're a soft hearted effeminate man and they want you to be either the personification of masculinity stereotypes or a heartless corporate mastermind. Do u understand what I'm saying?
Lex: but his son is so pretty...
Me: *sighs*
