Fanfiction vs. Original Stories: A Writer’s Solitude and Community ✍️📖
Writing is a lonely craft. It’s you, your keyboard (or notebook if you're fancy 🖊️📓), and the whirlwind of ideas in your head. But writing fanfiction? That’s a different kind of magic. That’s stepping into a shared universe, playing with beloved characters, and knowing that, out there, someone is just as obsessed as you with the same dynamics, the same what-ifs, the same need to fix that one scene that haunts you at night. 👀✨
Fanfiction is never written in isolation. Even if you’re typing away at 3 AM, half-delirious, fueled by caffeine and questionable life choices, you know that someone will read it. Someone will comment (although people are becoming more and more stingy and it is something that we MUST solve as a community). Someone will scream in the tags. Someone will send you an ask saying, “HOW DARE YOU HURT ME LIKE THIS” (which, let’s be honest, is the highest form of writerly praise 😌💅).
But original fiction? That’s a whole different beast. You’re still creating worlds, shaping characters, bleeding onto the page… but there’s no built-in audience waiting. No immediate feedback loop. It’s just you, hoping that one day, someone will care about your world as much as you do. And that loneliness? That silence? Sometimes, it’s suffocating.
I’m not saying one is better than the other—both are acts of love. But writing fanfiction feels like sitting around a campfire, sharing stories with friends who nod, gasp, and laugh at all the right moments 🔥👥 .Meanwhile, writing original fiction sometimes feels like shouting into the void, waiting for an echo that may never come.
And yet… we write. Because stories demand to be told. Because whether it’s in a shared universe or one of our own making, we crave connection 💜
So, to all the writers out there—whether you’re posting fics at breakneck speed or painstakingly crafting an original novel—I see you. I hear you. And I hope you find the audience that makes you feel a little less alone, even if it's just a good friend who years later asks you why you didn't finish that story.
🖤✍️ Tag your favorite writers. Hype up indie authors. Accompany fanfic writers on their journey. Support the storytellers 🔥📖

~
Between one and the other night, in the company of the whole universe, the journey of life unfolds.
I do not know the meaning or the purpose of this journey, and if at all there is one, but art has taught me it is less a destination and more a surrender-to live, to experience and to express.
Expression, after all, is not the blinking cursor, the canvas, the pen, or the lens. It is about the beating heart behind them-a vessel brimming with unsaid things.
A moment where the human breath leans forward-and becomes immortal.
In responding to the experience through expression (art) -the artists, the audience —we all live and create meaning in that moment of time, and this makes us realise that we have not woven the fabric of life, we are but one thread within it, whatever we do to the web we do to ourselves.
I.. ] experiences-be it the words on a page, as they wait, to be read, to be lived, the coffee, sitting in the cup, the way the roads receive the wheels of a motorcycle, the way the camera captures what we feel, the graceful touch of the sun, the silence of a moment which feels like the world is holding its breath, The patience of the earth, spinning silently through time. In all of this—the earth, the sun, the world, the camera, the words, in their beauty-there is nothing at all but us.

Fanfic Writer Ask Game
Thanks for tagging me @popjunkie42!
Describe your writing process from idea to posting/publishing
The first step is a eureka moment that pushes me to writewritewrite until I suddenly have 4k words in a day haha. Then, I usually take a day or two away from a draft before I go back to it and add/eddit with fresh eyes. If it's a longer story, that's also the point when I like to sit down and map out some future plot points.
There's a free app called the Hemingway Editor which I like to use to catch and delete unnecessary adverbs/passive voice while editing. I also like to paste my drafts into AO3 and read them on my phone while editing - something about doing this just makes it easy to catch typos for whatever reason, and I like seeing how a piece will look for (most of) the people who might read it.
If I only have a little time, or if I'm commuting/at work, I draft on paper and then type it up later. Keeping a notebook feels more intentional. It's also not even slower than typing, since I'm using notes in situations where I otherwise wouldn't be writing at all.
I'm also a late-night, write-that-thought-in-the-notes-app person right before I fall asleep, and I keep one doc for my whole fic, not one for each chapter. I know it overwhelms some people to not split a work into docs for separate chapters, but I like having everything in one place!
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
50/50 both
What do you listen to when you are writing?
It depends! I like to make writing playlists for ships or for specific fics, like my feysand playlist or this playlist for my longer feysand project No More Dreaming Like a Girl.
What’s your drink of choice(while writing)?
Usually just water, sometimes tea or coffee.
Promote yourself! What’s your favorite thing you’ve written?
This is so hard! When it comes to some of my older fics, I had a ton of fun learning poker to write Deal Me In (SnK/ereri). In the Low Lamplight (ACOTAR/feysand) is my favorite recent work, though.
Share a fic of yours that you think is underrated/deserves more love.
The darker the fruit, the sweeter definitely diverges from my usual tone and characterization! The more time that passes, the happier I am with how it turned out.
Do you have any advice for new writers?
For one, write something you want to read! Unless you're writing for a gift or exchange, write for yourself, not other people. You will never ever ever be able to please everyone, and getting caught up in whether someone will like your work or not often kills inspiration.
Second, trust your readers to read between the lines. The Emotion Thesaurus (per @choulatte's recommendation) is invaluable for practicing showing vs. telling characters' thoughts and emotions. I think it's worth the investment, but there are also great free resources out there.
Lastly, find writing rituals for yourself - make a point of trying to write regularly, and of setting aside time for it, even on days when you just aren't inspired. Seeking out writing community can be really encouraging in about three billion ways, but accountability is one of them :).
What is a writing style/technique that others do really well that you'd like to get better at?
I'm so prone to overwriting. Stephen King once said that a second draft is the first draft minus 20%, and I'm trying to consistently take that to heart.
Is there a character you were surprised you enjoyed writing as much as you did?
I have an ACOTAR WIP from Eris's POV, and I'm pleasantly surprised by how much fun it's been!
I think a bunch of the writers in my orbit might have done this game already, but if either of you want to, go for it @thesistersarcheron @xxvalkyriesxx :)

16, 30, and 75??
16. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Share one of them?
Okay, so I have the final chapter of Gravity Well vibrating in my head and the entire rest of The Stars screaming at me to fucking get on with it already, but I also have a Mummy AU that I talked about before, and then a very little mostly visual idea I chatted about with one of my mutuals where Anakin is MENA and Padme is Mongolian. In a more interesting timeline....
There's also a little seed of an idea for a one-shot sequel to Sweater Weather where Din and Grogu meets Luke's family and that would end with Din half-joking about taking Luke to Mandalore, but I don't know if anything will come of that. Guess we'll see when actual sweater weather swings around my neck of the woods again.
30. Do you share rough drafts or do you wait until it’s all polished?
I used to post WIPs and they weren't all that edited either, but I had a few formative experiences that made me go the "don't post until polished" route. One was readers at FFN getting fuck-off angry that I took down a Transformers WIP because I was going to rewrite and polish the story. I never posted it back up. I'm so mad I didn't because now the only copies I have left of that fic are oooooooooold word docs and text files, and they're incomplete. Another was just... the sheer number of abandoned WIPs because I didn't plot well and wrote myself into walls. It was really discouraging and I got used to expecting myself to fail whenever I started a longfic. Then I really got into the habit of participating in NaNo every year, and the NaNo method of writing balls to the wall, like you're running out of time, until you hit the end of Nov. 30th. really changed the game for me. Like, oh, I should just writewritewrite until I reach the end, and now I have all this time to go back and see what I can cut out, what I can add, what I can do to put out a finished product.
I think the finest exampe and experience I had with that method was The Storm. It was originally a lot shorter because I was in such a hurry to finish this story that wouldn't leave my ass alone and I really wanted to get the fic out there while the dinluke ship and fandom were starting to take off, but when I was going over what I wrote, I realized that the story was missing time and I needed to create more time for these characters to sit in their heads, listening to the rain and to each other, and to get to know each other better. So I wrote in enough scenes to add a new chapter and create a story with a much better tempo and pace, and that story gave me a massive fic series for the ship. What the fuck.
75. What scene in [Fanfic Name] took the longest to write? What was difficult about it?
Umm.... not sure which fic we're talking about here. But like, just assume that either all the scenes in the chapter after the story's climax or all the scenes in the last chapter of a story take the longest to write. They always do. Coming down from the high of a story's climax (lol) or tying up every loose thread that needs tying up to finish a story is just insanely hard to do. I'm trying to wrap up Gravity Well right now AND I AM STRUGGLING. I've also been working tons of overtime while living in an environment where I can't ever relax, so it's a struggle and a fight to write everything down and feel satisfied.
Play ask games, win ask prizes!

3. Describe the creative process of writing a chapter/fic
For your reading displeasure, the general thought process as i write:
"OKAY! GOT AN IDEA! TIME TO WRITE! *writewritewritewrite*....hmm. *write....write* wait shit no that was a fucking typ-oh for fuck's sake *editeditwritewrite* wait no that sentence is...no wait a second *editeditDELETEwrite...write* oh shit that was a good one! *writewrite* eh, a break is in order methinks. a short one. [INTERMISSION OF UP TO A WEEK] okay back to it *writewritewrite...write.....write........* OH GOD THIS HAS BEEN IN MY DOCS FOR TOO LONG IM FINISHING THIS RIGHT THE HELL NOW *WRITEWRITEWRITEWRITEWRITE* done!...is it 2 am?...oops. *quick edit, post* Okay! now to lay in my bed and write nothing for a week!"
16. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Share one of them?
Too many, you know this Becc. I got one where MK tries to get Wukong and DBK to reconcile, another general thing with Baiken and Eri (also just assume I have SOMETHING in mind for either or both of these two at any given time), and a few more you'll have to wait for ;)
18. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles?
Usually after, though there are some times where I come up with a REALLY good title on accident that just NEEDS a fic to come with it. And I usually just think of something off the top of my head. Usually something metaphorically or thematically relevant that you don't have to scratch your head over too much.
19. What is the most-used tag on your ao3?
I dunno! Let's check!....to the surprise of absolutely no one it is, in fact "Eri" for character tags with a whopping 21 fics! As for general tags "Drabble" is at 11 with "angst" at a very close second place with 10. neat!
24. Worst writing advice anyone ever gave you?
Okay not gonna go with "kill your darlings" this time because sometimes YEAH death can be a useful trope sure whatever it has some merit so i won't keep beating on it.
I think there was one about writing habits "just keep picking away!" like with persistence. literally NEVER worked for me. early on when I just started writing I'd just sit in front of an empty word doc feeling bad about myself instead of just closing it when I figured no writing was going to happen today so I should just cool my head off instead.

It’s odd: ever since I’ve gotten back into writing, I’m finding it hard to read? Like I want to. There’s lots of stuff I want to read, primarily a bunch of great fics that have updated. But at the same time my fingers itch for a keyboard. My need to writewritewrite is overpowering my desire to read. I feel so restless otherwise.

maybe i missed two months...but does that really matter? here is how the last few months have gone:
-my energy drink addiction has been...well making itself known again in recent months. not every day like it used to be tho and i barely drink carbonated energy drinks anymore, just an occasional redbull and yerba mate!!! still drinking coffee almost everyday tho xD
-i still dont know if ive been using tumblr more, i think theres gaps in the timeline so its hard to say. looking back it was kinda funny that it was a resolution to use this website more, but it makes sense. i do love tumblr.
-i actively try to be nicer and kinder in my life but i think that a lot of the time i overlook it. and if i sat here and told u guys that i was the kindest person on earth it wouldnt really mean anything because 1. i have no proof, you'd just have to take my word for it. 2. i dont really know how often im making the effort to be kinder, i say please and thank u and try not to roll my eyes and talk back. so maybe that counts for something. 3. i dont have someone else's perspective, im sure that if i had someone observe me over the past five months and take notes on how my behavior has changed then i would have more insight.
-I HAVE BEEN DRINKING ENOUGH WATER!!! definitely not in the past week or so but i did literally just drink a cup of water so that will be changing!!! i've been bringing my water bottle to classes and that helps me a lot.
-i have been going to more shows as well but not very many local shows unfortunately D: i hate running into people i know but dont like...last month i went to 4 shows (waterparks, awakebutstillinbed, idkhowbtfm, blackveilbrides) i am so grateful i get to go to shows as often as i do, srsly. this month i have: awakebutstillinbed AND CAMPING IN ALASKA (i literally cannot believe it, like at all.) and the fall of troy with heavyheavylowlow and the number 12 looks like you xD im so excited!!! and lastly i postal service and death cab for cutie in oregon! my first time traveling out of state for a concert and im super excited :P
im gonna implement some new resolutions cuz its never too late to make change >_>
continue showing gratitude (idc if this sounds cheese...it rlly makes a difference especially to those who u show gratitude to)
keep writing. writewritewrite even ifl u think ur fingers are going to break. do not lose sight of writing.
boundaries. self explanatory.
(late) new-years resolutions
quit energy drinks
use tumblr more
be kinder to people
DRINK MORE WATER
go to more shows (more local shows, specifically)

A prayer for starting over
I hope to have faith in myself this time.
Intuition is light.
Follow it.
I hope soon my daydreams will be only of my future and not of my past
I hope that fear never takes me back to old pain for comfort
I hope to find a connection that feels eternal- someone who waits for me and looks for me when I'm not there
I hope for the strength that I never convince myself that what I want is too much
I hope for a love as soft as my own

I think I will try NaNoWriMo this month, since I'll be away from home most of the month and I won't have much else to do. Might be able to scrape together enough energy and time.
