Fanfic Writer Questions

Alright so, @optiwashere tagged me in this question thingy, how fun! I was looking for an excuse to discuss this stuff. Oh, and I will be tagging @zawazawanightmares, @modusoperand1 and @trygrievousbutgirl-blog, though ya'll are under no obligation to participate if you don't want to.

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

Twelve, though that number is a bit misleading because one of those has 15 chapters and has been getting sporadic updates since December of last year.

2. What's your total AO3 word count?

115,036. Which seems about right, I tend to get wordy.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

I started with Baldur's Gate 3 but pretty quickly expanded to Chainsaw Man, which is mostly where I hang my hat these days. I'm also planning on writing for Kakegurui eventually, and maybe Dead by Daylight and Warhammer if the mood strikes me. Oh and I wrote one fic for Werewolf: The Apocalypse that wasn't very good, but I'm probably not returning to that universe anytime soon.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

In descending order: Stress Relief, In Lust and In Leaf (E-rated Karlach/Shadowheart/Tav feat. recreational drug use) Through You (E-rated Power/Kobeni, chapter-based longfic) A Matron's Mercy (E-rated Minthara/Tav with lots of gender affirmation) Underdark, Under Pressure (M-rated Shadowheart/Tav, the first fic I ever published!) Waning Moon, Not A Moment Too Soon (E-rated Shadowheart/Tav, ball-slapping sex in a broom closet)

5. Do you respond to comments?

All of them! Though it occasionally takes me a while because of things like time zones and me needing time to think of decent responses. I love getting comments!

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I don't really do angsty endings, I keep that stuff to the beginning and middle when it comes up at all, but by default this one probably goes to Would You Still Love Me if I Was Several Worms? because the ending is only very hopeful that things will work out alright instead of outright confirming it beyond a shadow of a doubt.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Oh, hm... It's kinda hard to rank them, but I guess probably Hearts of Fire and Darkness, Eye Enough for Both, though there's no fic of mind that'd refer to as having an "unhappy" ending per se.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Nope! Not yet at least. I'm sure there's at least one person out there who hates my guts and thinks my work is trash, but so far they've been cordial enough to keep it to themselves.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yup! I like to think of it as pretty character driven, I always try to keep track of the characters' emotions and mental state during the intense gay sex.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

None yet, but I definitely want to write one for BG3 and Chainsaw Man eventually (as in, some time before the heat death of the universe). Both fandoms have a basically immortal lesbian and they deserve to meet eachother.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Again, not to my knowledge.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I've definitely had writer friends of mine look over sections of fics I'm working on to provide feedback and criticism, but nothing quite so involved.

14. What's your all time favorite ship?

This is going to sound so stupid, but it's actually an OC x OC ship. See, once upon a time I joined a Vampire: The Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition roleplay server on discord. I played a terrifying, gay monster woman with way too much shit on her shoulders, and she ended up becoming the girlfriend of a blood-curdling, bisexual monster woman with a machete and a vicious streak. The scenes we wrote together there were beautiful and romantic and did wonders for my mental health. I am never going to forget those characters. Valerie and Jelena forever.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I wanted to write a novel that was basically just me throwing a bunch of mine and my friends' OCs into an angsty high school AU. It was going to be an attempt at a complex exploration of queerness, mental health and being born into a privileged but deeply abusive household. I gave up after chapter 2 because barely any of the people I showed it to for feedback got back to me, and I got demoralised. Now I write fanfiction and get feedback all the time.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Apparently, transfem rep and hurt/comfort. Which I guess I can kinda see, I'm good at hurting characters but I can never stand to see them in pain for long, hence copious amounts of comfort to compensate.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I'm bad at writing male characters and just flat out can't write hetero romance. Also, I'm slow as fuck.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I just don't do it, unless using Japanese honorifics when writing in English counts. If I need to have a character speak in Russian or Infernal or whatever, I just write "they said in X language" or something like that.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Technically there's a very shitty, unfinished, first-draft, collaborative Hotline Miami fic sitting somewhere in my google docs that's probably the first if I were to check the dates. It's never going to get published or finished, but one OC I made up for it still keeps cropping up in the stories I come up with in my mind, and if I ever go professional they'll see the light of day eventually.

20. Favorite fic you've written?

I technically answered this question here! But the TL;DR version is: Through You and Another Way share the top spot, passion projects that make me a little emotional to think about.

7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?

Again, did this one for Disco Elysium, so again tying into the above answer... Qi Rong is a character I'd like to be able to spend more braincells thinking about, because I think there COULD be some interesting meta I could make about him, but the fandom seems to have a very predetermined way of thinking about him and writing him that makes it so hard for me to want to engage.

9. worst part of canon

I feel like I can't speak on DE just because I haven't finished or explored it as thoroughly as I'd like to yet. For MXTX books... God I'll be so honest it was silly and fun the first time, but I cringe rereading the whole Statue Mecha scene near the end of TGCF. It's so ridiculous and outlandish that it breaks emersion for me a bit.

16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)

Okay, I'll be SO HONEST -- as someone who's come to better accept his trans masc-ness because of Kim Kitsuragi -- I'm kind of shocked at the sheer amount of trans!Kim fics. And I guess there's a part of me squinting at it going, "Isn't there something a little weird about ascribing transmasculinity to a character who -- in the real world -- is part of a race that's often feminized (the "pretty Asian boy" stereotype) and is visually the most slender and short of the male characters? Like? That feels a little weird to me, ya'll..."

(Like, not saying stop, I get it, and the fanfics handle it really well on the whole, but also like... I think it's worth asking ourselves (1) WHY Kim gets this treatment over Harry or another character and (2) WHAT kinds of queerness we're ascribing onto characters. Especially in light of stuff like me seeing KimHarry on a yuri poll.... like. come on ya'll. A tiny bit of critical thinking) (and again. not saying "don't write queer characters" but maybe like... consider diversifying your options).

17. there should be more of this type of fic/art

Tip Top Racer Kim. Why the fuck are none of you writing Tip Top Racer Kim Kitsuragi AUs. Why. Where's the art. Where's Kim in tight fitting racing uniform huh??? (which. uh. if anyone has a good artist you'd recommend for a commission....) In Disco Elysium, who the FUCK are these student communist dudes everyone is talking about because I LITERALLY haven't seen them.

Also for TGCF, the underwater kiss scene. The actual kiss is honestly secondary to me to EVERYTHING ELSE happening in that moment because people seem to forget how INSANE the circumstances are.

22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores Oh for my MXTX fandoms that's easy -- I am easily the second most Beefleaf brain rot person you'll ever meet and the Black Water Arc of TGCF is everything to me. Everyone always talks about the climax and the beheading and sure that's cool but the BUILD UP? The visit to Fu Gu and watching the performance of He Xuan's massacre? The Truth or Dare game in the temple? The foreshadowing with the Water and Wind master statues? The visit to Shi Qingxuan's terrace and the poetry written there? BREAKING SQX OUT OF HER PALACE BECAUSE SWD IMPRISONED HER? AND THEN SQX WALKING AWAY FROM YUSHI HUANG'S FARM AFTER "MING YI" TRIES TO GET HER TO STAY BEHIND? None of you talk enough about the LENGTHS He Xuan went to to try to avoid getting SQX involved in SWD's death and it makes me ABSOLUTELY INSANE ON A DAILY BASIS!!! I am chewing on glass about this!!!!

Blurb and question; Of Snowscapes & Explosions

First of all: I had to type this up like four times, because tumblr likes to just eat my text posts. Omg. WHY. Why does CMD+Z for 'undo' (which you could normally use for undoing a text replacement) erase THE ENTIRE POST YOU JUST WROTE? 😭 Who decided this change was GOOD? 😭 It never used to do that!

Okay.

Anyway.

So.

I'm having a conundrum with the next (few) chapter(s).

I decided I'm absolutely breaking this update up into multiple parts, because while trying to trim it down I somehow managed to bloat the chapter up in size to 22k words lmfao (DO NOT ASK ME HOW. I DO NOT KNOW. 😭) And I am not posting that lol (It's bad enough I go over 10k at times for extra long chapters. That would be insane.) However, now that I've found a good spot to slice off at for the next update, it puts me in a pickle because it's in the middle of some stuff I could completely edit out (thus, rendering the update a lot shorter).

For context, this next scene focuses on Bakugou and OC talking while eating. He's discussing a few topics—things he likes and fan stuff regarding All Might, but then turns the tables on OC and starts asking her about things she enjoys—favorite heroes, hobbies, specifics about her quirk and family. Stuff like that.

A nice bonding moment.

This wouldn't be a problem if not for the fact that I've been trying to keep OC as vague as possible (since she is supposed to reflect the reader).

My question then becomes: how detailed am I allowed to get with her?

Some readers in the past have asked me to go into more details about these exact things, saying they already see her as her own character and not a stand-in for themselves. They have said it would make her a more interesting character, too, since it would broaden the plot.

And on that point, it's really interesting for me hearing that as the writer of this piece specifically, because I have tons of headcannons for her! 😅 All sorts of info I never bother to add into the story and just kept to myself lol. Stuff she likes. Hobbies. The way she looks. Her family (and extended family). All sorts of thoughts regarding other heroes and pop culture... Her favorite songs, books, etc. I'm constantly thinking of new stuff to add in 😂 I just... never do.

It's not a huge problem for me (or it hasn't been, anyway). And I've indulged a little bit here and there in the past. Ya'll have been kind enough to overlook content regarding her family dynamics, assumed height, food preferences, etc. I just don't know how far I'm allowed to go where people will still be interested.

I've tried to veer on the safe side, not just with canon as a guideline, but also keeping in mind I have a lot of readers from different lifestyles and cultures than myself. I guess I don't want to say she likes XYZ and then readers hate her, or be turned off from her possible perspectives on things. 😅

And I know I'm probably overthinking it; that as the author I can do as I please. But with this story I've tried to be mindful of the reader's point of view since the beginning, and I think that it's also part of the story's charm. I like incorporating your thoughts and feelings. It feels like a bit of a group effort. 🥰 And I don't want to ruin a formula that seems to make most readers comfortable.

I would really love to hear your thoughts regarding this, whichever way you feel. I can continue to write it the way I have, and that wouldn't be a problem (I wouldn't be upset!). But it might be more fun for us if I indulge? I could even ask about some specific opinions from the readers and try to incorporate that, too. It would certainly open up a lot of doors for content I could write.

I have a few things I'm considering revealing in one of these upcoming updates, but I don't want to divulge just yet what that is (Maybe my next blog post). It's not something serious or prominent to the plot, but it's revolving around one of her potential hobbies and possible club activities she partook in at her old school.

I did a lot of research on a few topics for it, but it's just something that I thought was interesting, and not a necessity to the plot. 😂 It's also not something I think a lot of people will care about, so I'm contemplating cutting it specifically because of that. (It's fluff, really. I know I could always just blabber away here to what it is lol but I did think of a way I could incorporate a callback to it in a later chapter if I wanted.)

But yeah, it's late and I'm just rambling at this point lol

With that all out there, I'm going to try and get all my editing and formatting done later today for this chapter (I'm on my way to bed!), that way I can post between late tomorrow night and sometime on Sunday when I get home. Watch With Me: Hart to Hart 1x03

Episode Title: Passport to Murder

Original Air Date: September 29, 1979

Why this one?: Jonathan Hart jail strip tease. you heard me.

This episode is about drug smuggling from Mexico. So you know, really light, fun stuff. Throw in a little blackmail and crooked cops, the Harts pretending to fuck to get out of jail (I WISH I WAS KIDDING - no i don't.) it's a lot.

The Harts sailed to Baja with a friend. For a vacation? His wife and kids were supposed to come along but alas. This is an important detail to the plot, which I don't actually care about.

Their ship is called "The Romance" because they've made their last name their entire personality and I love that for them.

I love the conceit that this whole things takes place while the Harts are dressed to the nines (tuxedo and all) through this mess, so Jonathan is pulling STRONG Bond vibes.

"I should never travel with you." I mean, it's good advice. The get into this shit with alarming regularity. But this friend dude is a mean drunk.

Then he falls down the stairs which is...not great.

Jennifer speaks impeccable Spanish. Because Stefanie speaks impeccable spanish. AND french. and she's pretty strong with german. overachievers, both of them.

I just love that they go running all over Mexico in their sunday best. Ya'll could have changed into jeans, you dummies. But then Jonathan wouldn't be able to run around looking deliciously rumpled with his shirt open halfway down.

A dead guy falls on Jennifer. She's always being accosted by dead bodies.

"Remember that article I did on drug abuse?" She's a drug expert now, although she can't tell if it is cocaine or heroin. But she does know it isn't white flour!

Jonathan puts The Romance up for collateral to get money for some drug exchange thing. I'm sitting here watching this and my brain just absolutely blue-screens on this plot stuff.

So Jonathan gives the drug guy the money and he gets the drugs. Then the police come and find the drugs on him and confiscate them and send them to jail. IIRC it's a big scam full of corruption.

Jonathan hands over the drugs to Jennifer to identify. She's like "I guess it's the same?" she didn't even TASTE IT. But I suppose that would have created an entirely different episode.

"She's not stimulating my appetite." lmao look. Jennifer is straight up objectifying jonathan to their guard. "Show her the ole pearly whites". and then. And THEn shE StrIPS him.

pours water on him

makes out with him

and attacks the guard when she comes in to check out if they're actually doing the big nasty in the jail cell.

this whole scene makes me go absolutely fucking feral it's SO FUNNY.

they really sat in the writers room and then went "This is perfect". bless.

then they remain handcuffed together for most of the rest of the episode.

jonathan gets his "my wife just tried to pimp me to the lady guard" revenge when he snaps her heels and tears her dress so she can run faster.

they've gone from deliciously rumpled to a real hot mess pretty quick. and then oops, they have to get in the water and swim to safety!

"are you sure your relatives didn't scout for custer?" damn jennifer.

these assholes are actually managing to swim cuffed together. AND they're getting shot at. Good thing the cop guy is a bad shot and also good thing there aren't leeches in that water yikes.

so then there's like a whole bunch of plot where they get into the sheriff's house, they're chased by a helicopter and in the end they find out that Drunk!Friend's family was never in any danger. It's a scam on a scam on a scam.

"Now proimse me, we won't get involved in any more of these THINGS." Promise, promise, promise. "Because if you do, I'm just going to have to chain you down, and that's just for starters." I hope you're planning on a big finish. "Oh I am, now that we're alone like this." and guess what they're not alone but they don't care because they're The Harts.

Mysterylover Watches MHA: Season 5 Episode 14 "Season of Slash Ships"

So I have for the moment decided to just stop worrying and love the bomb (and his icy-hot and smashing boyfriends), and hope Bones pulls off MLA just fine. After all, this is my Origin Trio jam, may as well enjoy it.

But first, Hawks and Dabi being Mistaken for Dating (but are they mistaken?) by a crowd of fangirls!

LOL all this Hawks stuff makes absolutely no sense, I'm sure, to anime onlys. Poor confused folks watching rn. "WTF why did Hawks just murder Best Jeanist? Who is this mysterious shadow dude?"

Anyway onto Deku being cute and adopting Endeavor on sight.

Ah, callbacks. Remember the Sports Festival arc ya'll? God those were good times, I miss that arc. Haven't seen it in a while.

I kinda love how when being brought back to meet Shoto's parents Deku is the Good Kid who is Immediately Approved of by all and Kacchan is the Bad Boy the folks don't approve of. Like Deku is the Betty Cooper to Kacchan's Veronica Lodge.

Here's all Might giving them advice on their upcoming Work Study. Many fans have been trying to speculate on what Kacchan was supposed to learn from the Internship, since it isn't made clear what he learned as it is with Deku and Shoto. Most fans seem to agree he learned to want to make things up to Deku for how he treated him till the end of Season 3 (or 2, honestly; he mellows out to Deku a lot after the All Might fight), so he doesn't end up losing him the way Endeavor's shithead behavior lost him his entire family. Since Endeav is similar to him and all. I guess in that scenario Midoriya is All Might and Shoto is...IDK, Rei maybe? Though I bet Shoto sees himself as in danger of becoming the Endeav to Deku and Kacchan's collective All Might vibes.

Anyway there's a big scene with the trinity meeting Hawks and all having different funny reactions while he passes his coded message onto Endeav but I'm gonna jump ahead to the agency scenes.

Bones apparently saw my post about how the trinity's reactions to Burnin show off their different sexualities and didn't like the implication that Deku is attracted to girls in any way, so decided on an angle that wouldn't show off his blush. You know what you're doing Bones.

And Deku's new role as Kacchan's "please honey we're in public" wife is definitely one of my favorite BKDK aspects. Partly because married, partly because Deku wants you to do better, dear. He expects more from you. Also because Deku does not take, and never has really taken, any of Kacchan's crap. He may love the guy (platonically or romantically I think that part is undeniable) but that doesn't mean he won't tell him off.

This scene definitely ranks as one of Endeavor's all time sweetest moments. Guessing what Hawks is really up to cause he knows him so well. Because he's adopted (Because like BKDK he's dating his kid).

I'll just be up front and say that, yes, I have seen Sabaody Arc (with my siblings) before, obviously. The only reason I have to watch it again was in order to get reacquainted with some supernovas from so call worst of all the generation. So I didn't really NEED to document it all beyond some dialogue and cues for the fic. I certainly had no reason to take about 75 screenshots of Zoro.

But, you know what? I did.

(And you don't hear me complaining about all that extra work! Possibly because now I have around 75 more screencaps of Zoro...)

And since like four of my last posts weren't Zoro related, it feels like I've earned this.

Reminder as to how it is Zoro manages to arrive to the auction house fight in time (cause God knows it wasn't on his own).

Follow up reminder that just like a week ago, Thriller Bark happened.

It is a good thing Zoro is too fucking stubborn to die before he beats Mihawk and makes Luffy pirate king. Because, damn, being that boy's first mate hurts.

Believe it or not, this is actually Zoro being super sweet. Notice how he DIDN'T slice a guy in half and - bonus! - he shouted out for both his captain and that stupid cook to duck before launching an absolutely devastating attack their way.

That's the kind of thoughtful guy Zoro is, ya'll.

To be honest, I just really enjoy whenever Zoro acts like an "official" first mate. Usually, for Zoro, this involves either backing up Luffy's crazy/stupid/crazy-stupid plan (not hard as in a lot of cases Zoro is just Luffy but less words more swords) or handling some mob/bad guy giving Luffy the freedom to go off to kick whoever's ass he wants to kick, goddamnit.

But every now and then he'll play a bit more like a vice-captain in Luffy's absence (though, honestly, most the time the most Luffy-esque thing he can do is not act like a Captain at all. So way to go, Zoro, always on the job!) And here there was something particularly nice about it, because Silvers Rayleigh is there and it's like the only time they kinda get to interact, really.

Which breaks my heart. I need Rayleigh to sit down with Zoro and share some real first mate to first mate advice.

Silvers Rayleigh: The best thing I can tell you is just go along with their crazy.

Zoro: Yeah, as if Luffy gives anyone a choice!

Silvers Rayleigh: Sounds like you're doing amazing. *gives Zoro a gold star in Vice Captaincy*

Rayleigh, he needs you. Mihawk doesn't even HAVE a crew. How is he suppose to teach Zoro these things?

This boy has no one else except his captain, his crew, Perona, allied pirates, the citizens and royalty of both Fishmen Island as well as Dressrosa, Johnny, Yosaku, and the various other friends and acquaintances they've met on their adventures and no one else. How could you just abandon him like this Mihawk!?

Oh, and Rayleigh. I guess technically I should have been yelling at Rayleigh that time.

My bad, Mihawk. As you were.

I feel like it's been a while since we've seen Zoro talk with a goddamn katana in his mouth and I miss it.

After leaving the auction house every first mate / crew gets a moment noting the damages done by the captains; then both Killer and Bepo have scenes of jumping into the fight protecting their asses (not that either man need it: Kid is simply busy deciding Luffy is his new #Rival 4 Life while Law calls on Bepo... Uh... Just to show off his polar bear, I guess? Law is here to live his best life and give no fucks, people) leaving Zoro out of their game of "keep my idiot captain safe at direct risk to my own life".

That's one of my favorite games to watch Zoro play!

Instead, what we get is Zoro protecting the crew, making sure all of them - injured octopus, rescued mermaids, and bad ass old men included - are able to make a quick escape. There isn't actually any attention brought to it, and he doesn't get another fun triple play with the rest of the first mates, but it warms my heart whenever he goes all Protective Big Brother Zoro.

Here's that one weirdly staged scene in the bar with Luffy in the middle, all the rest of the crew to one side, and Zoro sitting completely by himself on the other. You guys know which one I'm talking about, right? Where the staging is just weird.

The only reasons I can think as to creating such a visible gap is how many fucks Zoro just could not bother giving while everyone else - even the super chill Robin and no cares Luffy - give at least one fuck to this conversation. Well, too bad. The only fucks Zoro had on him we're sake based and the boy does not share his sake. So none given.

Not over Silvers Rayleigh sailing with Gol D Rogers. Not about Luffy all but inheriting this mantle of Future Pirate King. Not about yonko or lost civilizations or buried treasure. Not even about the truth of the One Piece.

Then again, it's not like that shit has ever mattered to Zoro. Why should he start caring now?

Rayleigh might as well have said, well, actually, there's nothing special about Luffy: he's fuck all like Rogers, Shanks hates the kid after losing his arm, the hat is actually cursed so he'll never get to Raftel and even if it wasn't it doesn't matter because they made up the One Piece as a joke to begin with.

None of that effects Zoro in the least.

See, he's already sworn that he'll make Luffy the Pirate King. He knows without a doubt his friend can and will get there and if when they do the One Piece turns out to be be some lie made up by a bunch of stupid old men, so what? Luffy will just make his own One Piece and become Pirate King, anyway, that's all.

And, sure, he could at least try to look even a little bit impressed with who Silver Rayleigh is or interested in some of his stories especially seeing as they will be, you know, kinda following in his footsteps and all, but why? It doesn't matter one way or another to Zoro. Why get all worked up over shit that has nothing to do with him?

Back to the core topic here: Zoro.

No, wait, sorry: Vice Captain Roronoa Zoro.

If you had to prove that Zoro was one if the best vice captains sailing the Grand Line, I think we could all point to one big piece of bear shaped evidence. And - yay for him! - he gets to meet up with that proof again here in Sabaody.

Everyone (save Luffy) looks properly terrified from the moment Kuma appears - because you would be wouldn't you? - but especially Zoro. Zoro looks more honestly scared here than I can recall him being at any other time.

And it kinda makes him look like a little boy! I just want to wrap him up in his green blankie and tell him everything will be alright, ahhhh....

It also kinda makes up for him missing out getting in on the "Protect Your Captain" fun earlier since, sure, he didn't fend off a few dozen marines or anything this time round, but then in fairness he is still recovering from taking all of Luffy's pain unto his ownself.

Looks like you gotta up your game, Killer/Bepo.

What did you not you like about eloise this season?

WELL, I guess you could say that I just found her a bit---mean? And like unnecessarily too. I really was rather irritated with her this season in regards to how every single interaction with her siblings went, minus the swing scene 2.0. I tweeted about it in my thread while I was watching and the longer we go since S2 aired, the more annoyed I get. Like that is how they think a feminist sounds? If ya'll don't get tf out of my face with thaaaaat, OOF.

She is my absolute favorite ever in the series and so to be upset with the writing for her is really a bummer. It's giving very much Arya being written to say "most girls are stupid" when she would fucking never, bruh. It's all in the same terrible ballpark. Anyways, abolish men writing for women 2k22. CVD YOU AIN'T SEEING THE PEARLY GATES FOR THESE OFFENSES, GLAD WE'RE RID OF HIM FOR S3.
