literally it's 3am where i live and i'm on mobile but FUCK IT i haven't posted any actual writing in like a YEAR on this blog whose description include the words "I WRITE" and i can't tell if i'm even going anywhere with this so fuck it under the cut is the prospective absolute mess of the first chapter of the flipo family time loop fic. (for clarity, flipo family as in slime, mariana, and juanaflippa) this covers loop 0, aka the relevant parts of canon. words: 1630

parts of it i popped off with and other parts i hate; up to you to identify them. also the italics and other formatting got erased when i copy pasted and i'm re-adding all of it by hand so if i missed a spot, no i didn't. if i missed an accent on a letter in spanish that was a typo, if i missed a ¡ or ¿ that may have been on purpose.

oh and for obvious reasons, content warning for mentions and mild descriptions of child death and child murder. no blood, and most of it is a three word mention; i'd say the brief paragraph beginning "Tilín didn't scream" is most of the reason this warning exists.

Charlie Slimecicle stepped off the train.

He’d been hoping for a bright, sunny day to start their vacation, but was sorely disappointed. The portal had apparently taken them pretty far, since they’d gone from noon to night time. Talk about jetlag. They hadn’t even been on a plane.

“What happened to the other guys?” he wondered aloud as he stepped onto the platform.

“Yeah no clue,” Phil said, scanning the empty station. “Thought they’d meet us here.”

“Guys!” one of the Spanish speakers--Vegetta, he’d said, when they’d all met up at the first station--called, from a lectern at the wall. “There is a book!”

They crowded around as he read the instructions aloud--something about pressure plates, Slime wasn’t paying that close of attention. He was a little more preoccupied with making sure it only felt like his brain was dripping out of his ears. That would be kind of embarrassing.

Which was not to say that he wasn’t enjoying the constant onslaught of people talking over each other using words he may or may not understand. In fact, it was the opposite; he was frankly thriving in the absolute chaos that kicked back up around him as a timer appeared in the wrist communicators they’d been provided along with their tickets.

“Como se dice ‘we are going to die now’?” He giggled, chasing Phil and Fit to one end of the station.

“¡Vamos a morir!” shouted Spiderman, echoed seconds later by the black bear in the collared shirt.

Giddy over the high of attempting to use his high school foreign language for the first time maybe ever, Slime absolutely didn’t contribute much to solving the puzzle, and before long the sound of the timer ticking down was accompanied by a loud buzzing alarm.

“It’s been an honor!” he shrieked at the top of his lungs. “It’s been an honor!”

The bear ran past them again, shouting, “I’m going to die!” in English this time.

“Adiós amigos!” Slime yelled.

The countdown ended.

And then his communicator buzzed, and there was a video playing on the screen, showing a cartoonish yellow duck in front of a blurry beach stock photo. He skimmed it absently--some generic welcoming message and another side quest for them--distracted by Maximus audibly losing his shit laughing across the station.

“Come on, I’m trying to take a vacation, I gotta work now?” Fit complained. “This is ridiculous.”

Slime wanted to jump on that bit, but the message cut off with coordinates marred by static and the noise of the emergency weather alert system and he lost his train of thought completely.

“I got the English book!” Spreen called, holding it with two fingers like it had personally offended him.

“English leader,” Vegetta said, seeming to find that amusing.

“English leader.” Spreen laughed and flicked the book away. Slime stepped back but somehow it still nailed him in the chest.

“Guess I’m reading then,” he said cheerfully.

“In Spanish?” Maximus said.

“Um.”

Vegetta called something, backing across the plaza with the book open in his hands. Phil backed up to the wall.

“Here,” Phil instructed, “we’ll read it here.”

“Okay okay.” He flicked it open. “So we have to get water wheel planks--”

Their peace lasted a grand total of thirty seconds as voices suddenly began shouting, overlapping in chaotic chorus.

“What is that?” Fit demanded.

“Is that coming from the other side?” Phil stared up at the top of the wall.

“This is the thinnest thick wall I’ve ever seen,” Slime said, giddy laughter bubbling out of him again. “Is this thing made out of pencil shavings? If I sneeze on it, is there gonna be a hole?”

“Nevermind, we’ll read it over here.” Phil dragged them away again, but the Spanish speakers were dispersing into the trees.

“Forget the book,” Fit said, “follow them!”

(In the end it was explosives that took the wall down, which in hindsight was a precursor to how a not insignificant portion of time on the island was spent. The first day, however, it was just funny, much like everything else.)

(That was to say, the first first day.)

The communicator had indicated that today there was something special planned, so he made an extra effort to wake up.

“Morning Jaiden!” he called to his upstairs neighbor.

“Hi Charlie!” He could hear her farming through the wall. “Glad you woke up on time!”

“Well you know, you know, El Backflipo couldn’t miss it,” he joked, sifting through his backpack. “Got any spare food? I’ll trade you uno backflipo.”

“I have so much toast, come here and get some, free of charge.”

With a quick backflip and some toast to start the day, he popped open the map.

“There’s a lot of people down the wall,” he noted, their green dots so clustered they formed one. “Wanna check it out?”

“Yeah sure.” Jaiden tossed some seeds into a chest. “Do you know what this event’s gonna be?”

“I have no idea,” he admitted cheerfully.

She laughed. “Yeah, me neither. I guess there’s an egg involved, but that’s all I know.”

He dug around in his backpack for a paraglider, nodding along. “Yeah, yeah, un huevo, I get you.” Shuffling the landmine from Vegetta to one side, he yanked out his glider and threw himself out her window. “Let’s go!”

(nothing like getting struck by lightning to wake a guy up in the morning)

Slime fiddled with the communicator as he waited for the line of people to get through the ticket machine; he already had his own, a nice B for Backflipo. The new live translations still boggled his mind. He had to fight the urge to chant weird shit under his breath, just to see what the bubbles would say.

He paid a little extra attention when Mariana walked up to the machine. That guy seemed cool. They’d done that pequeño dormir together on day one, and he had a good sense of humor. Egg parenting would probably be funny.

He was thrilled to see the B for Backflipo on the ticket Mariana stepped away with, even if Mariana was decidedly less so. This was gonna be good.

(it was, and it wasn’t)

So, Mariana wasn’t exactly the coparent of dreams. Then again, Slime was pretty sure Mariana could say the same about him. In fact he was pretty sure Mariana had said the same, but in Spanish, when he wasn’t checking the translation.

It was great. They thought they’d killed a child immediately and then decided to fake their own child’s death to get away with it, and then confessed their sins to a bilingual angel and built a farm and then he buried himself beneath an improvised cross and went into a coma until his sins were forgiven, or something, except his sins weren’t forgiven in time to save his own child’s life.

And then Juanaflippa was dead. Dead at Mariana’s hand.

His bitch wife killed their daughter.

(Everything went faster, after that.)

Slime wanted to kill him.

Slime wanted to kill him for killing their fucking daughter, but of course, Mariana couldn’t even be bothered to be around to take care of her alive, never mind to pay for his crimes when she died by his hand!

(in a better world, his rage started and ended there. in a better world, the anger fizzled out with the lack of a target.

There couldn’t be an Egg Event with no eggs.

If he killed them all, it would bring her back.

(in a worse world, he succeeded. in a worse world, the Egg Event ended there.

They held a trial.

If he won, it would bring her back.

(in another world, he didn’t convince them. in another world, they left his daughter in Hell.

Tilín was still before she hit the ground.

Tilín didn’t scream. Maybe they didn’t have time. It happened so fast. He was sure it happened fast. Almost too fast. But everything went so fast, now, even though Flippa was back. Yet, time slowed down for this, like a rubberneck driving past a highway accident, watching him desperately trying to shock their heart back into motion.

“YOU KILL MY BEST FRIENDS,” Flippa wrote. He begged her to understand. She wrote, “i can’t believe it.”

She wrote, “I HATE YOU.”

His daughter fell to his bitch wife’s sword. The same way. The next day.

They’d only just gotten her back. And Mariana killed her again.

He only left eggxile for the funeral. She wouldn’t stay dead, but he had to be there.

Time went even faster after that. He was Gegg, or maybe Gegg was him, or maybe Gegg was Gegg, or maybe. . . ?

He went back to eggxile.

He wasn’t leaving without them. Tilín. Juanaflippa. He would do whatever was necessary. He would pray to any higher power. Lil J still owed him a goddamn favor, but the guy wouldn’t pick up his calls. Maybe if he put more shit in the shrine; angels liked shiny shit, didn’t they? He went back to the mine, where the gasses swirled in his head. He built the shrine. He mined. He built the shrine.

He went back to the mine.

He’d said that before. No he hadn’t. Yes he had.

No, he just needed to clear his head.

so, what happens now that eggman has his memories back?

Eggman appears in the story like all good Sonic stories do, which is to say don't worry about. /s

Robotnik and Eggman are similar; egotistical, full of avarice and cruelty, with the inability to see the value of nature beyond its potential use. The main difference between them however, is hubris.

Eggman came to this land to get his memories back, or more specifically, to figure out what was missing. Because, while Sonic knows that his previous memories were him and struggles with the dichotomy of it all, Eggman doesn't care.

He'll use the name-confusion to his advantage sure, but to him, Robotnik was a prototype who failed. Eggman doesn't want to find a middle ground or explore his past self, clearly Eggman is the superior of the two. He is better than Robotnik was in every way and doesn't consider himself a 'copy' (maybe something closer to murder or weirdly Freudian, but he doesn't have that level of introspection lbr)

Which to say, that Ronotnik would love the secret, underground Illuminati cult dedicated to him. Instead, Eggman finds it distasteful at best; it's more talk than actual execution -but it's the thought that counts and he truly does appreciate it.

Eggman is found by dissentients and ends up in the middle of a political terrorist group headed by Snivly and some of the former elite. They want Robotnik back in power so they can reclaim their prior status and power. Which, early on Eggman was excited for, but he realized that the concept or 'Robotnik' has moved from a real person to a concept/figure piece. And he's no ones pawn and tries to dip when he realizes it.

However, pre-memory Eggman is having fun being an asshole dictator to his underlings who keep telling him he's going to change things. He doesn't believe it, mind, but he's willing to bide his time with his own plots and have someone deliver grapes to him. He's in the middle of this when he gets his memories back, so he goes from kinda vibing at having underlings to catching up on the unsaid downlow. But also, it doesn't take a multi-degree genius, rocket scientist to see the cult's ploy is half-baked useless trash.

The faction sees a traumatized and potentially loyal city with an army, the roboticizers, and a population that already "knows what to do." But Eggman is a realist and even if he went along with their desperate plan, the amount of work needed to make Robotropolis useful as a proper hub wasn't worth the effort.

Because, the thing is that Mobotropolis is a broken nation. It's politically, economically, and socially stressed and the unified government doesn't even have majority support. It's a starved city that doesn't have any remaining resources or a even a strategic location.

Plus, as a villain, he's a bit apathetic about the whole thing. What's the fun, the thrill of it all, in taking over something that's already been crushed? The population is already desolate and morally destroyed and they don't have anything left to offer. It feels like Robotnik's leftovers, a handicap that he doesn't need. No thanks.

And tbh, he really doesn't want to deal with the cult and if he was in charge, they'd all be in command too and he'd have to talk to people and be social and delegate and ugh, he'd never have time to be evil for himself. (He's too used to fighting on his own as Eggman and making his own allies. So having assistance in real people, that he didn't create and can't control, doesn't interest him)

So a time jump, and as he's actively ditching, he goes to take whatever data they have. And as he's stealing their archives, Tails' finds him (the context for that meme lol)

Fun fact: Eggman is Mobotropolis' largest trade partner and is the main importer of steel....which came from Robotnik in the first place. He noticed the discrepancies on the ledgers and the unofficial name change, but didn't think anything of if at the time

Currently I’m pretty much exclusively a 9-1-1 writer, but in the past I wrote a lot of Flarrowverse (do they still call it that?). I also have published fics for Fantastic Beasts and a few anime (Given, Haikyuu, Saiki K). Given the number of Bnha wips i have locked away in the vault it’s amazing I don’t have anything published for that.

This probably has to be The Crimes of Queenie Goldstein, in which Queenie is put on trial for her actions during the war. Don’t @ me but Queenie turning traitor was bu far the most interesting part of the Crimes of Grindelwald (the only interesting thing, really). There could be such an interesting story between her and Tina if only JKR would let the movies out of her grasp.

Fuck, idk if I have a happiest ending fic, a lot of them tend to not have that much story arc. (A lot of established relationship fluff or smut lmao). I guess if I had to pick one it would probably be How Eddie Learned To Stop Worrying and Embrace The Kitten Life.

Do you get hate on fics?

Not since that one anti-olicity fic that I wrote while deep in the trenches of Flarrowverse discourse, which I totally deserved :/. I have regrets. Also I should probably orphan/delete that one if I haven’t already. In my defense, high school. I have learned.

Yea lol. I think my 9-1-1 stuff has been almost exclusively smut. Idk how it happened. (I do know how it happened smut is fun to write)

I haven’t published any of my crossover fics :( none of them have been complete enough. I have many many unfinished RotBTD wips that have never seen the light of day though.

What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Ok. After the end of the Heroes of Olympus Series, but before Trials of Apollo was announced, I tried my own hand at writing the sequel that was clearly coming based on all the loose threads in the final book. It was going to be a Solangelo quest to save the Oracle of Delphi from Python, while Akhys tries to poison Percy to turn him into an evil god(?). Half the details have been lost and I desperately want to remember them, because I haven’t attempted anything nearly as cool or ambitious since then. The first 5 chapters are posted on my ao3 (Will Solace and the Oracle’s Cry) and I still think high school me had the most interesting characterization of Will out of everyone else on the internet at the time. Even if it is still very 2015.

What are your writing strengths?

I think I’m good at getting into the heads of different characters. Understanding their motives and weaknesses.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Editing.

Lmao I have a lot of weaknesses but I definitely struggle the most with trying to look back on or change things I’ve already written, even when it’s necessary.

Also my tendency to just drop fics if I stop working on them for too long. Rip to my wip graveyard.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

That’s a minefield I’m not willing to play in. Unless it’s Chinese. Very limited amounts of Chinese. Or like, a pet name or phrase that’s already ubiquitous in fandom so I’m not risking anything.

First fandom you wrote in?

Percy Jackson!! That Will Solace quest is the first thing I ever wrote! I definitely had a tendency to jump into the deep end with new hobbies lmao. Like my first ever cosplay that took me 3 years to complete.

Favorite fic you've written?

I think my favorite fic is always going to be the one I’m currently working on writing. But I am very proud of the silly little dramatic ironies in In Hindsight, which I wrote entirely over one long lunch the day after 7x04 broke me. Also I have to shoutout Teacher’s Pet, that one ruler spanking fic nobody ever reads because it’s Eddie/Ana lmao. I enjoyed putting in a bunch of tiny incompatibilities between them. So, uh, I guess my favorite thing in my own writing is dramatic irony?

Whumptober 2022: No.31 A Light at the End of the Tunnel- Comfort

A/N: I trulyyyy cannot believe I made it to the end of Whumptober. A fic a day. Love it. Anyway. I wrote this fic in particular for me more than anyone else. It hits incredibly close to home.

The two of you made your way down the steps of the church together. The door had barely shut behind him before Carmy was pulling a pack of cigarettes out of his jacket. He placed one between his lips and was about to tuck it away before he thought better of it. Glancing over at you, he held it out to you in a silent offer. You knew that you probably shouldn’t, but given everything that was going on, you figured it wasn’t going to be the end of the world.

You let him light it for you when you reached the bottom of the steps. You tucked the hand that wasn’t holding onto the cigarette into the pocket of your jacket, and he mirrored your actions. The air around the two of you was thrown into a haze of smoke for a moment as the two of you stood there in silence.

You cleared your throat as you tapped the ashes off the end of your cigarette onto the ground. “Wanna grab coffee? Or a bite?”

He raised his eyebrows, a little surprised by the offer. But he shrugged, nodding. “Yea, yea sure. Got a spot in mind?”

You chuckled, shaking your head. “Figured I’d leave that to you. I don’t want to pick the wrong spot to take the chef to.”

A tiny smile curled his lips before he took a drag off of his smoke. “Fair. Come on,” he nodded towards the crosswalk, “I know a spot a few blocks away.”

You walked side-by-side. You thought it was going to be weird walking together, not saying anything, but it wasn’t. The cigarettes were enough of a distraction, the fleeting streams of smoke passing between you putting just enough of a barrier as you walked.

Carmy stopped outside the front door of a restaurant that was definitely closed. All of the lights were off. He snubbed his cigarette out on the ground, crushing it beneath his shoe. You were about to say something when you heard the jingling of keys as he pulled them out of his pocket. He sifted through the ones on the ring until he found the one that he needed, putting it into the lock on the front door.

He’d flipped a few of the lights on, but most of the place was still dark. You were sitting awkwardly on one of the stools at the counter, waiting for Carmy to reappear with coffee. You had tried to reassure him that you really just asked to grab coffee or food as an opportunity to talk a little more—it wasn’t a request for him to start actually working. You figured he’d done enough of that all day before he even turned up at the meeting.

He reappeared with two coffee mugs held in one hand, and two plates balanced on the other. Your eyes widened at the slices of chocolate cake he was bringing out. You weren’t sure what he was going to come back with, but this was better than whatever you had been trying to think of.

“Holy shit.”

He chuckled as he set the plates and mugs down. “Good—was hoping that would be your response.”

You eagerly picked up your fork and dug in. “You make this?”

He shook his head. “No. My one chef here, this is like his fuckin’ thing. This and donuts.”

“Donuts?” You couldn’t pretend that you weren’t interested.

“Yea,” he took a sip of his coffee, “Come back when we’re open and you can be his taste-tester.”

You nodded as you took another bite of cake. “I just might.”

Things were quiet between the two of you for a minute, the only sounds were the clinking of your forks against the plate and your coffee mugs against the counter. Every now and then you’d look at him as he stood on the opposite side of the counter from you. He was leaning onto it, bracing his forearms against it. You thought about telling him that he could take a seat on the side next to you, but something told you that he wouldn’t. That’s not what he did here—he was always moving.

“So,” he broke the silence as he scooped more cake onto his fork, “are you, what, my fuckin’ sponsor now?”

You chuckled, shaking your head as you took a sip of coffee. “I don’t know, do you want me to be your fuckin’ sponsor?” You paused, looking at him as you each watched for the other’s facial reactions. You toyed with the mug in your hands. “I just, I don’t know. Just felt like there was more to say?”

“Baring my soul in group wasn’t enough for you?” he joked.

You laughed, shaking your head. “That’s not what I said.”

He nodded. “Right. Well,” he gestured with the fork in his hand, “this place says it all.”

You smiled. “It’s a nice addition to the trauma-dump. Adds extra flavor.”

He fought the urge to smile, instead just taking another bite of the cake on the plate in front of him. He tried to drag it out for as long as he could before he finally looked back over at you. “Your turn. You know all about me, but I don’t think I ever heard you talk at any of those meetings.”

“Well,” you leaned, bracing your arms almost the same way that he was, “maybe if you had showed up a little sooner, you would know all of my shit too.”

“Sorry my brother didn’t die on a convenient enough timetable.”

You laughed. “Siblings never do. It’s really fucking inconsiderate of them to be honest.”

He paused. “That why you’re there too? Sibling shit?”

You nodded. “Mhm. Been about…” your voice trailed off, “It’ll be three years tomorrow.”

Carmy’s eyes widened, “Shit.”

You chuckled, not because it was funny but because what the fuck else was there to do? “Yea.”

“I’d ask you about it, but I don’t want to take away your possible talking points tomorrow.”

You laughed, rolling your eyes. “It’s not like I’m writing it all out like a fucking commencement speech. I don’t,” you shrugged, “I don’t even know if I’m gonna go tomorrow.”

“No?”

You toyed with the little bit of cake that was still on your plate. “It’s different every year. Last year I went. It was nice. I talked but I didn’t say what day it was or anything. Didn’t really matter, you know? She’s still dead all the other three hundred sixty-four days of the year too. Year before that I didn’t even get out of my fucking bed to brush my teeth, let alone go to a meeting.”

His tone was hushed, “Fuck.”

You let out a quiet, sad laugh, “Yea.” You shook your head. “Fucking middle child.”

“You? Or your sister?”

“My sister.” You took a bite. “I’m the youngest too.”

“You really know how to pick the people you don’t sponsor, huh?”

You laughed. “Like a sniper I sit and wait in the back of those meetings waiting for the perfect target.”

“And then you don’t sponsor them?”

You smiled. “And then I don’t sponsor them.” You paused for a moment, trying to turn the conversation back off yourself. “I know this place comes with a lot of fucking baggage for you,” you gestured around the seating area of the restaurant, “but I think it’s…it could be good for you.”

“My fuckin’ stomach ulcers that are coming back beg to differ.”

You smiled at that. “You’ll be stressed enough for ulcers no matter where you go.”

“Got that from three monologues at meetings?”

You nodded. “That and the fact that you look like you maybe wash your hair once every two weeks and get more than four hours of sleep a night at about the same rate.”

He shook his head at you but didn’t argue. “Fuckin’ sniper.”

“Fuckin’ sniper.”

“What about your sister?”

“What about her?”

He shrugged. “What was she like? You know, since I’m a few years behind on the stories.”

You smiled. “Coming in mid-series, Carmy?” You chuckled, shrugging. “She was, you know,” you paused, “she was the worst sometimes, to be quite honest.”

He choked on his coffee for a moment, not expecting that response. He looked surprised and amused and unsure of how to reply to that all at once.

It got you to laugh. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. But, I mean, it’s true. I love her. I love her so much. I would’ve taken a bullet for her. But we weren’t, you know, we weren’t those siblings that were best friends. We didn’t have a sibling group chat where we would text all the time. The three of us didn’t do weekly dinners. We didn’t party together or whatever the fuck siblings do.”

“Siblings do that?” he asked with a quiet laugh.

You shrugged, smiling. “Apparently.” You paused. “But yea. I mean, she was smart, you know? The kind of smart where she didn’t even have to fucking try. Which was infuriating for me personally, if you were curious,” you chuckled, “She could’ve done anything that she wanted. She could just…focus on something until she was great at it. And it never even took that long. Baking, drawing, photography, writing, you name it. Everything she did, she was good at. Fuckin’ annoying.”

There was a small smile on his face. “I bet.”

“She used to decorate cakes, actually.”

He perked up slightly at that. “Yea?”

You nodded. “Yea. Didn’t leave me a bakery or anything, thank god,” you laughed, “but that was her thing. She was good at that too, in case you were wondering.”

He chuckled. “Of course.”

It was quiet between you for a moment before you said. “We didn’t really start getting along until a few months before she died.” You noticed the way that Carmy stilled on the other side of the counter, hands motionless as he listened to whatever you had to say next. “Like I said, it’s not like we were best friends growing up. I always loved her, but we definitely didn’t always like each other, you know? Things were finally getting better and then, you know, she killed herself. Which, you know, rude,” you chuckled.

Carmy’s eyes widened as he shook his head, but he couldn’t help but to let out a laugh too.

“Like I said,” you took the last bite of cake on your plate, “inconsiderate.”

“Would you rather you didn’t?” he asked.

Your brows furrowed in confusion. “Didn’t what?”

He hesitated, like he regretted saying it but it was too late to take it back now. He raked his hands back through his hair. “You think it would’ve been better if you didn’t start getting along again?”

“Not to sound like an asshole,” you prefaced your statement, “but given what you’ve said about you and your brother, I don’t think there’s really a good position to be in with it. I think the only thing that would make it better is if they didn’t kill themselves.”

“That feels…obvious.”

“It is,” you gave a weak smile.

“I didn’t go to his funeral.”

You nodded. “I get it.”

“Did you?”

“We had a wake. We cremated her so there wasn’t a burial or anything. I went to the wake, though. I thought I was gonna cry, or be a whole mess or whatever, but I wasn’t. I cried once. Everyone else was crying a lot though. My mom said I didn’t have to go if I didn’t want to.”

“You wanted to?”

You shrugged. “I didn’t not want to go. But I mean, come on, you know what it’s like. No one wants to do anything when it comes to their brother or sister dying. It’s not…it’s not a good gauge.” You paused. “You regret not going?”

He shook his head. “It’s not gonna make him any less dead. He…he doesn’t care that I wasn’t there.”

“Yea. It all feels kind of useless, huh?”

“Most of it, yea.”

You toyed with you nearly-empty coffee cup, spinning it between your palms. “I like this.”

“What?”

“Being here. I don’t know, it’s better than sitting in some diner or something somewhere where other people can hear you.” You paused. “Most people don’t like when I make Dead Sister Jokes.”

“That’s because they don’t have a dead sister.”

You pointed at him from across the counter. “Exactly.”

“Does it get less shitty?” he asked. “Do the meetings actually fucking help?”

You shrug. “They help, yea. But it’s more than the meetings. You gotta, you know, you gotta do the fucking work. Grief sucks. Having other people who get it is nice. You can say flippant things like we do that other people would gasp at because how could you say that about them they’re dead. But you gotta feel it. Meetings are only a few hours of your week. You live with yourself all the fucking time.” You took a sip of your coffee. “The feelings don’t get smaller. You just, you know, you grow bigger around them. The grief is still there. The pain sucks just as much now as it did three years ago. But I have more breathing space around it now than I did back then.”

“Was really hoping you were gonna say some shit like, ‘yea five more meetings and you’ll be good to go’,” Carmy said with a quiet laugh.

You shook your head with a smile. “You got a lot of legwork to go before that. Can’t fast-track it. You…you know about that, though.” You saw his brows knit together and your smile grew a little wider. “What? I listen. All the work you did before you got here?” you tapped the surface of the counter. “Same shit.”

“It’s not the same shit.”

“It is. It sucks. You’re gonna lose sleep and throw up and lose track of hours. It’s going to feel like it’s your whole fucking world sometimes. And it is. But it isn’t. The work is constant and it’s thankless and infuriating. But you can’t stop doing it.” You paused. “You seem like a glutton for punishment. You’ll be fine.”

“Real fuckin’ reassuring,” he said with a chuckle.

“It doesn’t have to be terminal,” you motioned back and forth between the two of you, “We’re proof of that.”

“Or it’s gonna take more than three years to kill us.”

You laughed, nodding. “Or that, yea. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.” You paused, using your fork to point at his plate. “You done with that?”

He smiled slightly, sliding it across the counter to you without a word. You didn’t say anything as you tucked into what was left of his piece. The stillness of the restaurant around you felt calming in a way. You knew it probably wasn’t really ever like this once there were other people there. You wondered if Carmy ever stayed here off-hours to enjoy the peace and quiet of it. You wondered if he was even capable of enjoying it.

“You had mentioned that you were a chef,” you said as you corralled the crumbs left on his plate, “but I never thought about where.”

“This is it,” he said with a nod.

“So if I come back during the day, you’ll be running around back there yelling and screaming like a chicken with your head cut off?”

He laughed. “Yea. Me and everyone else.”

“Who’s everyone else?”

“Come back and you’ll see,” he said as he swiped up the forks and empty plates. He was disappearing back into the kitchen again before you could even try to pry or crack a joke about it.

Neither of you said it, but you both knew that it was time to go. You could’ve stayed and talked the rest of the night away, but the reality of it was that you both had lives to get to when the sun came up. Very different lives, but still.

“Does it get less weird,” Carmy asked as he put his jacket back on, walking towards the door as he spoke, “getting to know people in the opposite fucking order than you’re used to?”

You laughed, knowing exactly what he meant. “Yea. But the tradeoff is that the more time that goes on, the weirder it gets getting to know people who don’t know this stuff about you.”

“Hell of a way to break the ice,” he said as he locked the doors again.

You shook your head with a smile. “Yea, it breaks it for sure.” You took a deep breath as the two of you stood, each of you debating on how to say goodbye. That was another thing that never got less weird no matter how much someone knew about you. Your hands were tucked safely in the pockets of your coat as you said, “I’ll see you around?”

He nodded. “Yea, for sure.” He paused. “Think you’re gonna go tomorrow?”

You shrugged. “Don’t know. I’ll see how I feel in the morning. Either way,” you nodded towards the door, “I might come back for one of those donuts you mentioned.”

He chuckled, tucking his chin for a moment against the cold night air. “Alright.”

“Later, Carmy.”

“Later,” he offered up another small smile before you turned and started down the sidewalk.

This is going to be long and barely coherent/word salady but here you go friend Merin :)

Okay so... Deck of Phoenix. Prefacing this with with the fact DoP's message is about finding your own way to deal with trauma of all kinds. All of the characters have their own trauma and deal with it in different ways for better or worse LOL! LMAO! The main 6 we have for the cast are Neptune, Vikki, Teresa, Twilip, Ichigo and Salem. Salem is Ollie's OC that got absorbed into the story and became one of the linchpins in Ichigo's backstory (Childhood friends who were kinda romantic then shit happened and then OUAHGAHFDHGgeF anyways)

The magic system in the story is really complicated to explain because it really only makes sense in my brain at the moment and it's supposed to be universal across many different alien worlds :) Hehe! Did I mention this is a fantasy sci-fi? In the way of a fantasy world in a sci-fi setting!!! HEHEHHE!

Every person/soul is born with an ability that aligns with two sigils (magic types) and it can range from something extremely powerful and useful to something that never even manifests. An example of the latter would be a character we have; she seemed powerless until she died because her power was to revive permanently when brought back by a necromancer. Back to the main characters! Neptune canonically has schizophrenia, he has the ability to see the future of someone when he looks them in the eyes, which is how the story starts and also how he finds out he saves the universe from an evil tyrant called Paradox (Name might be temporary, idk lol) But yeah he has a character arc that might be spoilers so i'll explain on discord but it makes his schizophrenia so so soooo much worse <3 <- Projecting my problems onto him. (Also he is the only human in the group)

Vikki's powers are under construction but! She is basically the glue holding the crew together and is a satyress :3 She likes ballet and is the sweetest person you'll ever meet unless you get on her bad side HFGJEHFVQ Also she's built like a centaur and it's so cool to meee cuz I love drawing non-human characters

Teresa is like if Doc was a Loverboy and also a necromancer >:) I'm thinking about giving her the weird gender swag just to make one of the others the only cis person in the group TKYURLF (Twilip) Xe's an alien from a desert planet and is kinda a cyclops lynx/kangaroo mouse and she kinda looks like a vortigaunt now that I think about it..

Twilip. How do I even explain... He's like if Boomer (bubby x coomer) was a person tbh.. Cranky old man who gives tutorials and worked at a library and he misses his late wife so so much :( BUT he has a swag ass pen that can make drawings come to life and he's about the size of a cat btw if you even care <3 /ref

Ichigo... WHERE DO I START. Ichigo's been our OC since we were a KID! So they technically have the deepest lore due to sheer time scale soooo.. They use any pronouns with a preference for they/them and ze/zir and zir sooo everything to me <3 Imagine Leading Light with cloud's buster blade and soooo many more insecurities... Yea :) I can't even begin to dive into their backstory because I will be here FOREVER but long story short, canon system allegory with being 3 souls meshed into one body by the US government to be a super soldier (A human, an alien, and an inter dimensional being) and the alien part is destined to destroy the universe but that's beside the point! Teehee!

For Salem I suggest asking Ollie because I don't wanna misinterpret anything about him <3
