Hi hi so ive found that your illustrations tend to have quite dynamic poses and ive just been wondering how you do it and still keep proportion bc whenever i try it drives me mad and i end up only drawing the same 3 poses bc of it 😭😭

oh i just cheat the system and look for reference photos online (that’s a joke btw references are super valid and helpful tools that have been used by artists for centuries!!!) and go from there 😭😭😭

i mostly occupy pinterest but freepik and plain ol’ google images are also good!! oh and don’t be afraid to take photos of yourself if you need a very specific pose — you can’t imagine how weird my phone gallery looks because of all old reference photos i forgot to delete…….

but yeah i will either find/take a photo of the pose (or photobash a few photos together) and literally trace the overall shapes to make sure everything’s where it’s supposed to be. it’s okay y’all. tracing in fact is NOT illegal /j and can be a good tool/base for your art piece!!!

here’s how my art process usually goes:

“detailed” sketch (that i do with references open on the other side of the screen but with The Photobashed Reference Layer turned off. that’s when your art style gets to shine and you get to exercise these art skills muscles!):

Ofc Here are the only ones I use!! I use them as described but I switch between brushes a lot during the coloring process since I draw on only one or two layers,, it’s almost always a mix of those 4, this also goes for backgrounds. Like for example I also like to colour/shade with the gel pen. Thank you so much btw, I hope you’ll find this helpful!

Hi! Saw your post about commissioners using AI as a skeevy way to get cheap fully-rendered art from artists (thank you for spreading the info btw! Deeply concerning the ways these AI programs are being used to make an already difficult field of work even harder 🥲).

But it also got me thinking a bit about TOS's and pricing your work, particularly commercial work... I'm in the process of preparing to open up for commissions for the first time in years myself, and was wondering if you had any advice/resources for putting together a professional looking TOS and figuring out how to handle commercial licensing? I know this stuff tends to be super regional, but it's so hard to find consistent information online on the topics 😞

I can only tell you how I handle it. :) For normal commissions, do feel free to copy whichever part of my TOS you think will work for you from my private commission info. If you're not Swiss, the last line on the page won't be usable. 

A lot of doing art and illustration commissions is trial and error. I know it was for me. Tons of mistakes and hopefully not repeating them. 

For pricing, a friend told me two things that stuck with me and helped deciding on prices since then. 

First thing she told me is that exclusive rights for a simple caricature for a newspaper go for USD 800.- and up. Mind ya, she said that YEARS ago. And prices change. But if a simple black and white doodle goes for USD 800.-, don't sell exclusive rights to your full colour A4+ artwork for less. 

If in doubt, don't sell your exclusive rights at all. Most clients don't need them and if someone tells you they will give you USD 25.- and a voucher for -10% off their own product for it, tell them to fuck off.

People will try. And you will learn to say no. 

The second important pricing tip I got from said friend: decide on a price that makes it easy for you to let go. If you regret having sold it, the price was not high enough.

Most companies have their own contracts and their own price lists. It helps if you are able to adjust your work to their budget and deadline. 

Read the contracts carefully, don't skim anything, only sign them when you understand them. Especially US-contracts have a lot of complicated looking clauses in them, like the Indemnification clause. If they tell you that a clause is just there and you don't need to understand it, you can sign the contract as it is: run. 

Most clients won't actually need or even want exclusive rights, simple print licenses will be enough for them. A rough over-the-thumb minimum pay would be around CHF 200.- to 250.- per work day. 

I will add a third point here:

If you really want something to exist and be a part of it, then do it. Have fun. We mostly regret the things we never tried and never did. And if you only do things for the money and don't get paid, it leaves you with nothing (my thanks to Neil Gaiman and his commencement speech "Make Good Art").

Some of my most amazing commissions were orders from people who couldn't pay a lot, but were awesome individuals with fantastic ideas. And I don't regret a second of the work I put into those commissions. But THAT is your decision. And purely yours. Don't let people tell you what to be exited about. 

Maybe the thing you will be exited about is a kid that wants to pay you three shiny rocks for a drawing of their super hero princess cat wizard. 

And you will make it the fucking best super hero princess cat wizard for one of the rocks, because you don't want the kid to have no shiny rocks anymore~. <3

very random question but making the whole recent animatic you did (which was AMAZING btw) how do you feel about it in terms of progress you've made on your art skill? because like I've also very recently started getting into making animatics and it seems like a constant flow of working on the art and personally I've felt a shift in how I approach making normal pieces of art, so I was just wondering how much of that feeling would be there for you after finishing such a big project? no one's ever asked me about this stuff before, so buckle up because this might turn into a lengthy fucking ramble

to start, if we were to talk about progress, I'd have to talk about it more in retrospective than just my latest animatic. it's been three years since I started animating, and this particular animatic was more of a silly and short side project, I didn't put much thought into it really.

before diving into animation, I had a foundation in graphic design, four years at a tech school. this gave me a strong grasp of the basics and by that I mean visuals, colours, composition, and more. but yeah, when you transition to animation your view on art definitely shifts, at least mine did. because animation, at its core, is storytelling through visuals. so you're basically delving into film, and now you're not just thinking about static elements, you're considering movement, pacing, cinematography, even sound design. and as an animator, you're the director, the cinematographer, the storyboard artist, and the editor. each role requires specific skills. you need an understanding of visual storytelling, character design, motion graphics, timing, and so on and so on! and you're learning them along the way as you work on your projects. I'm learning all that still, and if you take a look at how my animatics looked in 2020 and now it's so much progress. HELL, both in my animation AND my drawings.

if you really think about this riptide animatic in retrospection you're basically seeing 10 years of my hard work on perfecting those skills combined into one silly video lol BUT without it, for me it's just silly thing that I did and I'm just glad people seem to like it, I'm not dwelling on progress here

now, when it comes to how I feel after finishing a project? in general? it's a mix. there's a sense of achievement, sure. like here I have to mention my short film again. I spent a whole year on it, mostly working on my own but with some guidance from my thesis supervisor. the film is 7 minutes long, and I worked on animating it from march to august. and when I compare the start to the finish, I can SO clearly see the improvement, both in terms of skill and artistic vision. BUT I also tend to look back and think about what I could've done better or differently. and while I see areas for improvement, this self-critique pushes me to get better with each project. eeeh it's a bit of a love-hate relationship with my work really. that's how it always been for me lol

u don’t need to “deserve “ anything to get it. you js need to want it, and have that fire under ur ass to grab it.

you’re not someone who gives up, i’ll tell you that, but you’re like clay. you always have a solid form, but you haven’t gone through the fire yet to be sturdy.

do you want to? yeah! but u keep letting little things get to you and mess up your design, your pattern.

you need to stop letting words or, what you see as, “consequences” get in the way of being happy.

waking up in what you think is ur cr is truly just a parallel reality in which you are closer to shifting. trust me. ive shifted to a different reality.

"i love you" he whispered in the kiss. At that, tears started running down your face again. Armin noticed it and cupped your cheeks once again, wiping the tears away.

You broke the kiss. Slowly opened your eyes and looking at his ocean blue ones.

"you really love me?... but... I am fat and-" he stopped you from continuing your sentence by smushing his lips on yours, shutting you up.

"don't say that.... You are gorgeous!! Baby, look at me. You are more than enough for me and you are the most beautiful girl/boy I've ever seen.... And to be honest, however, you look really hot..." A slight smirk appeared on his face.

Your body tensed up at his words. He noticed it and chuckled.

Hello! Thanks for the ask - this is a great question! (Also: aww, thank you! <3 )

Andorians are huge on music and theatre. The Andorian opera is renowned across the Federation (and beyond) for its technical excellence and emotive storytelling. All Andorians are born with perfect pitch, which gives Andorians a beautiful talent for music in all its forms. Their orchestras are slightly less well known than the operas, but no less talented - and often lauded for their technical excellence. Additionally, while Andorian vocal chords are very similar to Human vocal chords, they do have small structural differences which allow for a slightly broader range of sound on average than Humans generally can achieve. Humans can absolutely perform Andorian operas, but some pieces are extremely taxing and require exceptional range. Also, every single mistake, no matter how slight, will be as loud as a fog horn to every Andorian in the audience so... no pressure.

Theatre and opera developed hand-in-hand for Andorians as a natural development from story-telling during the worst parts of the year where it was too dangerous to venture outside for more than short durations and only if absolutely necessary. From these roots came a deep love of adapting historical and mythological events into dramatic scenes, though it admittedly took a bit longer for fictional stories to catch on as viable sources of inspiration.

(Andorian theatre kids go hard - bodily harm is frequent and expected. The band kids are weirdly militant and treat rehearsal like it's actually life or death, no matter what their instructors say. The choir kids are absolute prima donnas - but the problem is, they actually have the range and talent to back their attitudes up.)

In terms of writing, the long tradition of story-telling gives life to this as well. Andorians have long, spiralling epics that follow the lives of the heroes almost from birth until death, but they also have short stories in the form of folk tales and mythology.

As Andorians developed as a society, writing fiction really took off as a medium for self-expression and, in some cases, a means of offering scrutiny and criticism around a facet of their society. Andorian murder-mystery novels are well known for their twists and turns, often featuring no less than three or four sub-plots revolving around the central plot (at least one of which is a red herring), and they all have painfully, exactingly detailed descriptions of procedure and processing. Andorian romances are either tragic or absolutely filthy - or both. They're not quite as big on fantasy, for some reason. No one can quite get a satisfactory answer out of Andorian authors on that one. Their science fiction is actually pretty interesting, but it tends towards Orwellian themes, usually handling moral quandaries centering around private personhood in a world of ever-encroaching technology and surveillance.

As for poetry, Andorians do enjoy poetry and produce quite a lot of it, but the subject matter tends to be (a) vibrantly colourful and full of visual cues, (b) modern stories modelled on ancient sagas, or (c) enigmatic and heavily veiled in metaphors. The lattermost are considered the most personal, and generally the meaning is only known to the author and, if applicable, the intended recipient(s). Often times, these pieces are kept private even after the author's death, and only very rarely will examples of this kind of poetry make their way to the general public.

And then I see Altinak with his white/robin/robin. Oh my GOODNESS your dragons are just winning. His accent and apparel blend flawlessly into his colours. Just A+. As with Urania, I'd love to learn more about him.

And now let's pop back to the very beginning to feature your lovely progen, Maelor. I love seeing an accomplished old magician who only grew more talented as time went on, and that it shows in his sparkly UM! Just lovely.

Such well-loved progens. I just find their backstory so sweet; falling in love in a traveling troupe and leaving to start a life - and whole new clan - together. Good for Zia and Maelor up above. Sometimes I wish I made my progens nicer people, lmfao

i choose my own colours ^_^ i just blend them in my brain. mostly this is just from 5 years of doing an hour+ of pixel art every day but learning colour theory helped a LOT.

i work with small canvases, my average being 32x32 pixels. all of my canvases are divisible by 16 and the absolute largest i get is liikkkee 192. if i want to add a LOT of detail to something i make a bigger canvas, but most of my specific art is scaled to the game i work on

On another note, I am here to bring before you another offering, oh great one. Indeed, it is another dead bird! Oh what wonder! Oh what joy this bird shall bring! Can you tell I‘m writing this way too late at night? Also, ohoho?! A college au? I‘m all ears, please do tell once you’re ready. 👀

I kinda wanted to write a first meeting for the "Graves moves to Las Almas when he’s young and meets Alejandro" au, so I did. It took me a bit, but still. Btw just as a question, would it be alright for me to post the dark au drabble on ao3 and put a link to your art in the description? I kinda wanna contribute to the tag over there, but do horribly with any kind of fic longer than 1k words.

The sun beat down onto the dusty streets relentlessly. Alejandro kicked a pebble into the gutter and smirked victoriously at his best friend, who simply rolled his eyes. "Maybe if you had skills like me, Valeria would be interested in you, hermano." He evaded the other’s vicious attack and cackled, not letting up his teasing. "After last week’s mess up in English class, you might want to actually impress her."

Rudy just tried to hit the back of his head again, his face red as a beet. "Cállate, cabrón! You’re the worst- and I wasn’t even trying to impress her!"

By Ale‘s shit eating grin it was clear that he didn’t believe a word his friend said. With a sigh and a shake of his head, Rudy merely looked away, ignoring the other’s laugh.

They soon arrived at school, a few students mingling about in the sparsely shadowed yard, an escape from the heat provided only by the school roof‘s overhang and dry looking trees. Classes would start soon anyways, so they didn’t bother finding a place to sit outside, making their way towards their classroom. It was an old school, the hallways a squeaky linoleum, but some of the rooms themselves still had floorboards just like their‘s did. They creaked when you put too much weight on them or took any kind of step. Alejandro did take a step backwards when he first crossed the threshold. In the back of the room, next to the window, sat someone he‘d never seen in any of his classes before. The stranger had short, sand coloured hair and, most importantly, Alejandro noted, the bluest eyes staring right at him. Instantly, he was aware of his appearance, how his hair just wouldn’t lie right today, his shirt that definitely wasn’t a bad one but also not his nicest, that he probably looked stupid just standing there-

"Huh, I didn’t know we‘d get a new student this year", Rudy noted nonchalantly, as if there wasn’t a cute guy sitting on Alejandro’s assigned seat, and stepped around his frozen form blocking part of the doorway. He made his way over to the guy. "Hey, you’re new, right? I‘m Rudy."

The stranger shook the offered hand and introduced himself. "Phillip, how‘s it going?" His American accent was strong, Alejandro noticed, and sadly very charming. Rudy smiled politely.

"I’m good, thanks, I just wanted to ask if Señora Rivera told you to sit here?" Before Phillip could answer, Alejandro had stridden over and motioned to the seat he was occupying. "That’s mine. You can’t sit here." What a great way to talk to the cute new guy; he wished the ground would just open up and swallow him whole.

Said guy also didn’t like his tone and crossed his arms, leaning back in the chair. "I got this seat assigned, so fuck off." Before anyone else could be insulted, the teacher stepped into the room, hair pulled back tight and gaze sharp.

"Ah, Vargas, Parra, good to see you‘re already getting acquainted with our newest addition. I was hoping you two would show him around after class; we don’t want him to get lost on the first day, do we? Your new seats are one to the left." Just a quickly as she had entered, she had left, some papers in her hands, probably to go copy them like always, leaving Phillip and Alejandro staring at each other, one smug, the other angry. Rodolfo sighed, sensing a headache from a mile away.

teehee i was thinking more of a husky wolf mix cuz my man is edgy like that but also riddled with adhd. yes i was thinking about it. why and don't worry im answering this at like 5am sipping on my coffee cuz insomnia and i decided might as well pull an all nighter and do some work but im here now instead lol also yes omg of course you can post it!! giggling excitedly. but also like yeah me too damn😭 i barely post anything i write because it's always tiny drabbles i wrote at 3am for a bunch of different ideas stuck forever in my notes and google docs lol

anyway. i fucking adore you i hope you know that.

i love ale and rudy's banter at the beginning it's so sweet i just ughhh this is how i always imagined their friendship and this is absolutely how they would be in their younger days. like are you even friends if you don't bully each other from time to time

also the way ale instanly starts mentally assessing if he looks good and cool enough because he wants this cute new guy to like him and then immediately fails miserably 😭😭 he's so pathetic i love him and the way they start off very wrong and rudy is already so done with it. and the way ale was just bullying rudy for failing to impress val and the next moment he tremendously fucks up trying to impress graves lmao
