The 3rd and final 3D Virtual Live just finished streaming and yay, we got to hear the final new track from Zombie Land Saga FranChouChou The Best Revenge, which releases on September the 28th! Hosting this week were No. 5 and No. 6 along with No. 0 because she’s legendary.

There was a lot of cute banter including mentions of doing radio calisthenics, the girls going fishing, No. 6 making ink illustrations of the fish that were caught, and after the final song the rest of the group dropped by (via wire, which No. 4 did not enjoy) to announce that Franchouchou will be doing a proper on-stage live next month (23rd of October) at Makuhari Messe (and yes, it will be streamed as well). The live will combine 3D animation with the real Franchouchou’s performance, which sounds cool!

I’m pretty exhausted so I won’t go into too much detail. Songs this live were Mezame Returner, Oikaze Travelers, and the new song, We Are Fran Chou Chou!

“We Are Fran Chou Chou!” ups what we had last month with Ai penning the lyrics to “Beginning” by having the girls introduce one another with lyrics they’d penned and music they seem to have directed (it’ll be interesting to see Tatsumi’s score for this song). So No. 6 opens by singing about No. 1, No. 1 follows by singing about No. 2, etc. No. 0′s part (which features a very “We Will Rock You” beat , A+) featured a nice little dance from everyone’s legendary fave.

Apparently No. 5 wrote about 70 pages re: No. 6 and even though they weren’t exactly great for lyrics, No.6 treasures them. They have such an adorable sisterly relationship ;o;

No 6. also makes mention of their producer secretly filming them and saying, “This is what you’re like right now, keep it up” but also telling them to shut up which is... yeah, that’s him. 

I’ll sidetrack a little here but as we saw in the 2nd season, the girls are absolutely preparing for a life without Tatsumi whether they realise it or not.  Ai writing “Beginning” for last month was a big flag, but now “We Are FranChouChou” that they all collaborated on? The songs were about the only thing they weren’t doing themselves by the end of s2 (makeup being mediocre aside)... and the whole thing about him filming them... yeaaaaah.

I’ll be interested to see if we get more movie info at the live next month, anyway. These streaming virtual lives weren’t the best things ever but they were cute, fun ways to see the characters and hear the music again so I enjoyed them quite a bit. I can’t wait to get my copy of the album so I can listen to “Beginning” on repeat!

(I smiled when I saw Oobari Masami tweeting about his love for the series. He should definitely go to Saga!)

So, you know how, at the end of gaiden, Eikichi mentions that his sister got married and knocked up...?

What if Sakura is her child?

The times add up, Sakura was born on 1992, around the time Eikichi says his sister got pregnant. It could also explain why Tae loves Sakura since the very beggining, Sakura reminds her of Yuko.

And sure, one could argue that Tae doesn't remember anything from when she was alive, but she does, at least subconsciously.

In gaiden Tae mentions that both she and Yuko were big fans of Junko, now who does Tae follows around a lot during the first episodes of season one? Junko.

Also explains why Tae enjoys being an idol, she wanted to be one before she died.

Also, if Sakura was Yuko's daughter, it would make sense for her tombstone to be next to Tae's, since it would be closer to Tae's. Yuko could visit both her best friend and her daughter at once. (Wow that's depressing!!)

That's my theory at least haha...

TLDR: Sakura is Tae's best friend's daughter, and Tae kind of remembers a few things from her past even if she doesn't seem to.

(SPOILERS FOR SEASON 1) She failed at everything she ever attempted (got sick when she had the lead role in a play, sprained her leg 3 years in a row before a relay race, got distracted on her way to her high school exams and couldn’t focus so she got low scores) until she finally gets hit by a truck immediately after leaving her house (she was on the way to mail in her submission for an idol audition). THEN she gets turned into a zombie except she loses her memory until she gets hit by a truck AGAIN (she never looks both ways when crossing the street rip). She loses her zombie memories but gets her human ones back only to remember that she was the ultimate cringefail loser who never succeeded at anything she tried in life. Also (SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2) her former classmate is the one who revived her and she cant even tell who he is when his entire disguise is a pair of sunglasses.

I love me some strong women and cool monster designs ♡ Karlach is literally so perfect tho, she's got it all including my little gay heart. Noi is very similar to Karlach so no surprise there that I love them both haha

Serana and Celty are some of the first monsters I really took to as a teenager and I still love them (i mean have you seen Celty??)

Saki and Yuugiri are from the same anime (zombieland saga ♡) They're both so unique and cute and badass in their own ways aaa I would share more about them, but I'd be getting into spoilers. If you like Zombies and idols (hell even if you don't like idol anime, I usually don't) then I highly recommend this anime!

Analysis: Kiyoharu Suirenji

While I’m back to talking about Magical Girl Site, I think it’s a good time to take a closer look at Kiyoharu. I love her story as a trans magical girl, and I want to put together some thoughts on why.

Kiyoharu is part of the second group of magical girls introduced, with her item being a ring that lets her connect to the minds of others. Her first scene establishes that she’s trans, and that people around her are very much not accepting of that. Continuing with examples below the cut.

In Magical Girl Site, magical girls get their powers after something awful happens to them, which in Kiyoharu’s case is the bullying and harassment she faces at school. Which bothers her, but she recognizes the bullies as the problem, not herself.

There’s a lot of possible trans stories worth telling. Out of other anime/manga I’ve enjoyed, there’s ones where it goes more easily like Lily in Zombieland Saga, and more complex ones like Akira in I Wanna Be Your Girl. But Kiyoharu’s story makes for its own interesting combination: she’s surrounded by all of this and still 100% confident in what she’s about.

It’s worth noting that this is not limited to school.

For the most part, the other magical girls aren't great about this either, although Kiyoharu does get along better with them than with the people at school. This does muddle the messaging a bit, but it's well established that magical girls in this story are often huge assholes. (Kiyoharu is one of the nicer ones, and still has a delightfully sadistic side.)

Kiyoharu doesn't really assert her gender in this scene, although it plays out a bit differently in the anime. There, Rina is the one to call her a crossdresser, and Kosame is the one who speculates that Kiyoharu getting her powers could have been a mistake. Regardless, the story makes it plenty clear that she’s trans.

A particularly interesting thing about Kiyoharu's story as a trans magical girl is that no transformations are involved. For comparison, La Pucelle in Magical Girl Raising Project takes a feminine form through transformation, and Fav describes her as "one of the few boys able to become a magical girl". Which makes La Pucelle come off as a trans girl, but also attributes her status as a girl to the transformation. In contrast, most magical girls in Magical Girl Site don’t use any sort of transformation magic, Kiyoharu included - and she’s still presented as a magical girl.

And being a magical girl, specifically, is relevant in this story. At this point we’ll jump to later on the manga, so expect more spoilers, including things from past the events of the anime.

The King of Magical Girls is apparently only able to make use of energy from girls - when the magic items fall into the hands of guys, she notices and sends people to stop them. Which suggests that if the admins did make a mistake, they’d do something about it. But Kiyoharu has been using her powers for some time before the start of the story, without interference from the admins.

Like with other aspects of Kiyoharu’s story, there are some mixed messages here - when the two of them meet, the King calls Kiyoharu a boy. The overall takeaways regarding Kiyoharu’s magic aren’t entirely clear, which does cost some points in my book, but I’m inclined to give more weight to what we see from the rest of the story.

Another interesting thing from late in the story is the results of Aya’s timeline jumping.

When Aya starts creating alternate timelines, she goes after the circumstances that caused each of the magical girls to get their powers. In Kiyoharu’s case, that meant doing something about the students and teachers harassing her. The solution feels a bit simplistic, but it clearly supports the messaging from earlier: that the problem in Kiyoharu’s life is the people giving her shit for being trans.

This is more significant than it might sound. There’s a lot of anime where a character is presented as gender-variant in some way, then ends up with the message that what they needed was to feel ready to go back to being how they “originally” were. Chihiro from Danganronpa is a particularly prominent example of this, having a whole storyline about “trying to get the courage to admit to really being a guy”. For a different take in a similar vein, Ruka from Steins;Gate succeeds in rewriting time to get the body she wanted, but then has to give it up as each of the characters have to undo the changes they made to the timeline. Those characters both have their fans, but that sure isn’t what I’m looking for.

It’s not hard to imagine a story where a character identifies as a trans girl, gets bullied for it, and “solves” the problem by detransitioning. Honestly, I’d be willing to bet that there’s already some absolutely awful stories like that. There’s some interesting potential in stories involving detransition, but it’s a delicate topic that tends to be handled extremely poorly, and anime is not where I’d be inclined to look for a good one.

With all that in mind, it’s striking how Magical Girl Site rejects those ideas. For an idealized version of Kiyoharu’s life, it shows a scenario where she gets accepted for being trans.

In spite of some muddled messaging, Kiyoharu’s story adds up to something I’ve found really compelling. I don’t know of any other stories that handle a superpowered trans character in a way quite like this, and especially any shows that do. Magical Girl Site is a story that leans into extremes, and the results aren’t to everyone’s tastes, but they’re certainly distinctive. In Kiyoharu’s case, that means facing a ton of harassment, staying absolutely confident in spite of it, and being both extremely adorable and ready to annihilate anyone in her way. There’s something really special about that.

Okay so zombieland saga

I've seen the entire first season and the first two episodes of season two. Very good show like an 8/10

Note: So as I was writing this I realised I was going on long ass fucking tangents. There is a review about zombie land saga in here I just get distracted

It's interesting cos it's the first idol show I've ever watched. I used to stay away from them because I was surrounded by music in most of my after school activities as a kid and teen that I never watched music shows because I didn't need to scratch that itch (that and some of them would be like "this is the best song ever" and the most mid song would be playing and it was so painful to me). But know when it comes to music I do fuck all which is why I started rhythm games (taiko so good) and watching more music based anime

So I started with bocchi, loved it, 9/10

Then I watched k on, good, 7/10

Then zombie land saga, very good 8/10

Then oshi no ko, traumatic, 10/10

So I'm gonna talk about all 4 of these in varying detail. Since this is mainly a review about zombie land saga imma say spoilers for the first and 1st two episodes of the second season. But I'm gonna keep others mainly spoiler free

Zombie land saga is really interesting to me cos out of all of it it has my least favourite songs. Don't get me wrong they're good, however, there's a reason I don't really go for idol anime and one of those is that the genre of music they do I'm pretty indifferent about. (The other reason is that they tend to be pretty positive about the industry which is errr not true and thus I just don't find interesting). For me the best songs in zombie land saga are the first op, the metal song they play, and then the rap song. Everything is good music, don't get me wrong, but not too interesting for me.

So with all that out the way (I'm ignoring the 3d models cos ... Ehhh) omg the shows so fun. I love all the characters. My favourite is Tae she just so cute and interesting and fun. Even the guy boss dude (I've literally forgotten his name omg) is a character that I'd normally find so annoying but hes written with care and heart so he's just great. I live the rest of the girls they really blend well together. Lily gaves one my my friends a friend's a good gender crisis. The only character that was initially lacking for me was sakura because she felt a little bland which was because she was just, although motivated, going along with just being an idol rather than having a bigger stake in the game due to her lack of memories and this background that the other girls (even while having no memories) didn't have. But once she goes those memories and had her character arc she felt so much stronger and she feels just great in season two. I also love the animation and the vibrant colours which is just really nice after watching some shows with more toned down colours.

Like overall zombie land saga gets an 8/10. It felt weird rating it that simply because I've been rating quite a few shows that recently but I think that's more down to me watching better anime than me being over generous

Look. When I went in to watch Zombieland Saga, I had absolutely no idea of what was coming to me. Like I said, I went all in blindly, no spoilers at all.

I thought the title and the girls looking like zombies was a marketing plot to attract fans as an idol by making something scary and creepy (i.e.: the undead) into something cute and marketable. Like, appealing to the Goth/Emo/Scene crowd with alt fashion or something. Never in my mind has crossed the thought of seeing someone literally DYING within the first minute of the anime.

Not to mention how almost every Isekai out there utilizes the death-by-truck trope to kickstart their plots (as well as the one responsible for the cursed infamy of Minky Momo), and I've already have talked about how this trope is suicide ideation/glorification, and how horribly creepy this is.

Gimme a break.

What got you into zombieland saga? (Distracting ask here)

Thank you for the question <3 That's an interesting one, I think what got me keen to check out the series was the unlikely combo of idols x zombies. Like, both have been done before but together?

I was like "that could be so batshit that it actually works" and yeah, the rest is history (spoilers: it was indeed so batshit that it works and I would do anything for Franchouchou).

Honestly, the designs didn't stand out to me too much in the early days, it was very much the pitch that sold me (I now, of course, love the art like the rest of the show but the pitch is what reeled me in).
