You are only as healthy as your spine so putting in a minute of work into making sure your spine properly functioning is so important. . Did you know🤔... That each of your vertebrae should move independently of one another? Well now you know! . My video above will allow you to practice spinal segmentation (you’ll get better as you practice), but also use it as a diagnostic tool to see where YOU might be jammed up or have a lack of mind-body connection. . The stronger your mind-body connection is, the less injuries you’ll experience, and the more agility and strength you can tap into!! It really does all start with awareness and connection.... . Directions: 1. Place block between knees, knees under hips, and elbows on chair. (I’m using the chair to block the movement of my thoracic and cervical spine and just focus on lumbar) 2. Press elbows into chair, and begin breathing deeply into your low belly to help calm the nervous system down and allow your body to move fluidly. 3. Begin moving through your segmentation in your low spine, much like a yoga cat/cow, except your upper spine is blocked so you’re just moving lumbar. 4. Move AS SLOWLY as you can, moving just one vertebrae at a time. When you move quickly through this, that is usually a spot that can’t segment and that’s why the body wants to quickly “glaze” over it. 5. Continue breathing through the segments, repeat 3-10x. . If you notice I get a little stuck in the video on the last rep... I know I stand with a swayed lower back so this is definitely an exercise I need to do more often! . @susievanessayoga on Help with Kapotasana 🐦 aka, Full Pigeon ・・・ Using the wall to deeper into #Kapotasana Measure about 3 feet away from the wall. Try to do at 2 with wall and the the third without. For the first one, keep your knees hips distance apart, and reach back slowly for the wall. Once you have found the wall, wall your hands slowly down towards the floor. Think about lifting the chest and extending each time you change hand positions. Once you get your hands to the floor, try to flatten your hands as best you can and push up with chest. Once you have worked on lifting and extending it will become a lot easier to fold the arms In and reach for the ankles. Also try grabbing the ankles if you can and do one last push and extend the arms before you fold in. Repeat the drill. On your third round, try to reach for the floor without touching the wall. Once you reach the ground, do the same thing as last rounds. Try to flatten the hands first and push and extend. Then reach for the ankles and push up first before you fold in. To do the pose on the cover of this post, put hands back on the floor and flatten as best you can. @adellbridges on Something I Deal With Daily 👌 ・・・ TAG YOUR FRIENDS THAT SIT ALL DAY 👩🏻‍💻 Most people have tight (and also weak) psoas muscles from our chair-shaped sedentary lifestyle and yoga is a great way to get it strong and undo a lot of the tightness! . . As well as our traditional #anjaneyasana, a less-instagrammable (definitely-not-as-pretty) addition for waking the psoas up is with a rounded spine and posterior tilt of the pelvis, as shown on the right . . To do this variation, follow these steps: 1️⃣ lean the hips back over your back knee . 2️⃣ press the head firmly back towards your clasped hands . 3️⃣ tilt your pelvis back as if you’re trying to round the lower back and 💥🍑💥 squeeeeeze your butt . 4️⃣ draw your elbows towards each other and bring your chin towards the chest . 5️⃣ use your abdominal muscles to help crunch your front body inwards . 6️⃣ If you’re not feeling anything at this point, begin to slowly push your hips forward without losing the rounding of the back or engagement of the glutes and abdominals . . The way the psoas major goes from the mid spine, crossing over the front of the pelvis, and connecting to the femur means that you can lengthen it from the low spine in this variation, whereas anjaneyasana lengthens from the femur . . There is no right or wrong way to teach yoga) . #warrior3 THE INTENTION OF THE POSE ✨ . 💙Warrior 3 is pose that creates the energy of strength, capability and confidence within and helps to build strength in the core, hips and legs. . WATCH POINTS ✨ 💙 Hips lifting - the back extended leg hip may externally rotate and lift slightly. 💙 Hyper extending standing leg - straightening the knee joint too much. 💙 Gaze lifted which then causes the neck to lift. 💙 Hands and extended foot floppy - just because we don’t tend to think of them. 💙 Spine either arched or hunched with ribs protruding - relying on low back for stability. . TIPS TO TRANSFORM✨ 💙To check hips place fingers on Hip bones to feel if they’ve lifted 💙Micro bending the standing leg. 💙Gaze ahead of you downwards will create length through neck. 💙Active hands and foot which basically means pointed or stretched (when I first taught my sister @_mariadacosta and used this term she was like “wtf are active hands Ess??” Thsnks for teaching me this lesson sis). 💙By drawing tummy to spine lifting pelvic floor and engaging your deep TVA muscles (imagine wearing a corset) you will prevent your ribs from popping out and back over or under arching . . Traction on the spine and shoulders is magic for helping those areas relax. Add in some massage and you’re floating ☁️ ☺️ . . Tips for basing 💥 Keep feet directly over your hips and push your body into the ground. This will help the flyer feel much more stable and safe letting them relax and trust you. 💥 Go slowly, and hold pressure for a while. This also allows muscles to relax and receive the healing they need. 💥 Practice a lot. As you do this regularly, just like everything else, you will improve and feel more comfortable and confident and it will be felt by those receiving from you. HOLLOWBACKS! Learning to hollowback is a funny thing. It looks like a backbend, but it’s actually more of a shoulder opener. Any bend that happens in the back comes from the upper back. • • So let’s talk shoulders- ✖️shoulders need to be warmed up! I like puppy pose and clasping the hands behind the back 🐶 ✖️your shoulders must be strong to support your weight! try adding in some dynamic plank/forearm plank exercises into your daily routine 💪🏼 ✖️push the floor away with the forearms to lift up and out of the shoulder girdle. this will bring in some upper back length & strength in 🦒 ✖️don’t underestimate the connection of the shoulders to the core. the depression on the shoulders will turn on the side bodies, giving you access to more stability 🔥 ✖️the hollowback action comes from shifting the hips behind the shoulders. for this to happen, the chest must start to come forward. play with that pull forward actioning in forearm wheel first 👩🏼‍🏫 check out my forearm wheel tutorial a few posts back 🤓 it took me a while to figure out, so don’t get discouraged- just keep practicing! ✖️wrap the upper arm bones in to place the upper body in the right alignment to be supported by the shoulder girdle 👌🏼 ✖️the more you shift your hips back the more the shoulders will open. play with the distance away from the wall you place your hands in the beginning 🙌🏼 ✖️keep in mind that your shoulders might not be ready for this. you can still progress by working on the opening stretches, prepping the body to open with love & care. a good rule of thumb is that if you can’t breath naturally, you’ve gone too far 😬 • • Hope this helped a bit!
