As we move into February, a few updates: first, good news - I started a job as a Senior 2D Artist at Scopely on Monopoly Go (check it out - it's super cute)!! Well, this technically isn't "news," actually - I've been working here since late last year (and it's been wonderful!), but I was holding off announcing it so as to not split attention between that and the release of Carol and the End of the World. Speaking of Carol, since it's been out for about a month and a half now, I'm going to slow down sharing work for a bit -  don't worry, I'll still continue to post work from time-to-time as well as share other artists' work/fanart, but I just don't want my followers to start feeling Carol-fatigue. Lastly, speaking of fatigue, since Carol released during the holidays, I never actually got around to taking my usual holiday break from posting art... and not gonna lie, I'm beat, so I'll be taking a belated holiday break now! Thanks for your patience, see you in about a month or so, and if you find yourself missing me, consider throwing on Carol and the End of the World on Netflix!

Another one of my favourite pre-vis paintings that never quite found its way into the show: at one point, we were playing around with the idea that we'd see Eric skating at this roller rink and quietly reflecting on his time with Carol during the credits of one the early episodes, but it never quite panned out. To be fair, that'd be a really ambitious undertaking for a section of the episode most people skip anyways - plus, we already have a skating sequence in episode 7 that I think is far more impactful. Sometimes an idea can be good on its own, but still not quite the right fit for the bigger picture! Thanks for looking, and watch Carol and the End of the World on Netflix! One of my favourite pre-vis paintings that never quite found its way into the actual show: a breathtaking city-wide shot! When our BG design lead, Alex Myung, initially handed this design off to me, I was enthralled by the beautiful, incredibly thoughtful detail... and totally intimidated as to how to actually paint it, ha ha! It was a lot of hard work, but in the end, I'm really happy with how it turned out! Thanks for the challenge, Alex - hope I did your design justice! Watch Carol and the End of the World on Netflix! Another blink-and-you-miss-it background from episode one of Carol and the End of the World: this time from the montage of abandoned floors right before Carol discovers the 19th floor at the end of the episode. This was the first and only background I painted from that sequence to set the tone for the other shots. Not only did I want the abandoned interior to contrast the warmth of the elevator Carol is standing in, but I also wanted the darkness to contrast the bright, fluorescent lights of the 19th floor, while still being similar enough to feel like it's part of the same building. Thanks for looking, and watch Carol and the End of the World on Netflix! Showrunner: Dan Guterman BG design: Alex Myung, Jackie Lee Art direction: @ellemichalka

Welcome to the multiverse of stairwells in Carol's apartment complex! Well, not really, but one of our goals after I was promoted to art director was revisiting and polishing up some stuff from earlier episodes - especially episode 1, since it would be viewers' first impression of our world. One of these things was this stairwell Carol walks through to exit her apartment. The original background (not pictured) looked great and was completely serviceable, but we really wanted to push the world-building and disconnect between Carol and this communal space where people seemed to perpetually be partying. My job was to help figure out how we could SHOW that thorough colour - not just tell it, and as you can see, there was a LOT of discussion and potential solutions. Personally, I think part of an art director's job is being a liaison between their team of artists and everyone else: translating other stakeholders' words/abstract ideas into concrete, visual direction. Sometimes all this means is handing off a brief to an artist, but other times it requires more: actively listening to stakeholders, creating multiple (sometimes many!) solutions that meet their goals/vision, helping guide them to the solution they feel best meets that goal (not just telling them), and then whatever direction results from that dialogue can be handed off to the artist(s). Anyways, thanks for looking, and watch Carol and the End of the World on Netflix! Showrunner: Dan Guterman

Saw our other art director, the amazing @ellemichalka, sharing some very early pre-vis, so I thought I'd share one of my first assignments as well - moodboards for the opening of episode 1. This was very early on so we didn't have many designs or even storyboards if I recall, so I was mostly working straight off the script. My process was to read through the script, group scenes that could be encapsulated in a single image, write a 1~2 sentence description of each image, put together reference for each, and then just draw! I didn't get super far before other pre-vis tasks started to take priority, but I still really like this sequence! Swipe for a closer look at each panel, and thanks for looking! Almost forgot to share this painting: this one was such a delight to paint with its intimate lighting - I especially loved experimenting with ways to suggest the tiny glass details of the chandelier! More Carol art - this time: our first look inside the Applebee's Carol's secretly hanging around in episode 1. What can I say? Our girl loves Applebee's!! While I also helped out a bit painting this exterior, ultimately what made it into the show was more our first art director @ellemichalka's work and later @amandawinterstein's for different times of day, so I'll let them post that lovely art themselves! Not gonna lie, never sure what order to post all this work in, so thank you to Alex Myung (who designed these BGs) for always posting first to give me some idea of what to post next, ha ha! Thanks for looking, and watch Carol and the End of the World on Netflix! Showrunner: Dan Guterman BG design: Alex Myung Art direction: @ellemichalka
