Isn't there a comic panel where Tim nearly died because Damian tells him a hight in meters and he thinks it's in feet?
So in that case, Tim at least doesn't, which probably means the rest don't, and Damian is constantly annoyed they use the worse measurement system l.
The bats use the metric system. You can not tell me that the bats would use inches, feet, yards and miles when centimeters, meters, and kilometres are right there.

i keep seeing rancid arkham takes and i'm Tired.
listen, i understand that part of this is mishandling of the concept in comics and media? this isn't exclusively a fan issue.
but the whole point of arkham is that it's a last resort. bruce as batman isn't deciding to put anyone in arkham (except ra's once, and you know what? fair.). he's stopping criminals-- criminals who may have been written with mental illnesses but who are committing actual crimes on large scales-- and handing them over to the court system. the court system is putting them in arkham because the entire point of arkham is that NOBODY ELSE WILL TAKE THEM. whether it's written as it's own horror show or an actually compassionate institution (and it DOES vary), what exactly do you think anyone should do with serial killers nobody else wants to be responsible for? i think as fans, most of us are opposed to the death penalty except for maybe Joker, and part of the narrative nature of comics requires we do keep these characters alive and cycling through stories regardless of any moral objections.
you can't make Batman the villain for "putting people in Arkham," however broken the institution, without demanding that he actually act as judge and jury instead of just a stopgap. what's he supposed to do? make his own prison? show up in court to demand another prison take them? comics have a history of handling mental illness in really gross ways, but these aren't just mentally ill people in the context of their stories. they are horrifically violent people who have proven by action that they will not stop being horrifically violent.
"bruce could pour money into arkham," someone says. okay? do you understand free will? do you understand how hard it would be to get people educated enough to work with the most dangerous and unstable people in the nation? you can renovate the building all you want, try to hire the most compassionate doctors and guards, and the nature of what this KIND of prison is will keep grinding it down. doctors will burn out. doctors will do their best and still not be able to "fix" some of these issues. the building will be gradually destroyed. it's a money sink. that isn't to say Bruce as a wealthy man shouldn't try-- just that the state of Arkham in most comics or media isn't proof that he hasn't. you can't change a lot of these specific violent tendencies with money.
i understand comics have done their part to shape bruce as a violent man without compassion. video games have done a lot of that, too, because in video games people want to hit shit. but as a batman fan, i'm tired of fandom taking a massive, systemic problem of both mental healthcare AND prison work AND narrative necessity (people going in and coming back out) and making it Batman's fault. the whole point is that Gotham is a terribly corrupt place and still has an institution for prisoners literally nobody else wants to house because of the risk. these aren't just people who need therapy, however much fandom likes to woobify gotham villains-- these are people who even with therapy (some of it canonically good!) will go on mass murder sprees for FUN.
they aren't in prison because they're mentally ill, they're in arkham because they hurt people. repeatedly. with intent to do it again. even in the most violent iterations, you think that's Batman's fault for beating them up? like, bruh, i don't know about you, but if someone beat me up i still don't think there's a world where i'm justified in getting away with mass murder because of it, lol. in the less violent iterations, i still don't think it's batman's fault for what a judge decides in a system that is-- whether we want to admit it or not-- much bigger than one man's wealth, and full of people with their own motives and feelings and complicated thoughts. is he supposed to just keep rogues he suspects might be put back in? bribe some other prison somewhere else to take them, when that prison and those people might not have ANY idea how to prepare for them or stop them? at least in gotham he has a fairly high chance of catching them again pretty quickly, instead of dumping the problem on someone else.
anyway.

Harper got saved by Batman once, and then devoted all her free time to trying to find a way to pay him back. I do not accept that Harper has a naturally high chill. Maybe she reaches Barbara Gordon levels of chill, because they are the only two who of thier own volition decided, "you know what? Taking a break from this whole vigilante thing might be good for me" and actually have it stick for a bit. But naturally she is a wild child and it's only because of her brother that she holds back enough to seem chill.
The Batfam, Based on how much Chill they have
Bruce: Has become highly practiced at pretending to have chill. The keyword there is “pretending”. This man has never truly had chill, and it has taken many years for him to be able to pretend as well as he does.
Dick: Is theoretically capable of having chill. However, he decided at a young age that he had no interest in that, and therefore has no chill. He opted out.
Barbara: Currently has chill, but that is something that came to her through years of growth and maturity. When she was a teenager, there was no chill there. Sometimes old habits come back, but she has come into her own as having some of the highest levels of chill in the family.
Jason: Much like Bruce, never truly had chill. Early on, he tried to pretend he did, but nowadays, he accepts and revels in it. And teases Bruce for trying to pretend he does.
Tim: Wants everyone to believe that he has chill. He wants it. So. Badly. He does not. This small man does not have chill, and very much wants to have it.
Cass: People who don’t know her well assume she has chill. She does not. She, much like Dick, does not really have an interest in having chill. She’s happy as she is, thank you very much.
Steph: No chill, and revels in it. For a short time as Robin, felt she needed to, but once overheard Bruce say her energy was one of the best things about her, and discarded all attempts at learning to have chill.
Damien: No. He is the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul. There is no chill in that family, and he has never been taught chill. All energy that could be put towards being chill is devoted to his pets.
Harper: Has a high level of natural chill which is lessened by her being a teenager, which is inherently anti-chill. As she grows up, she will prove to have some of the highest levels of chill in the fam.
Duke: Is going through some things. His chill levels go back and forth, but in general, are rather low. He also still feels like the new kid on the block.
Jarro: No chill here. Not interested in having chill, more interested in patrols and cuddles with his dad.
Alfred: All chill, all the time, right up until his son or grandkids are in danger. Then all chill goes out the window. Shortly afterwards, the threat to his family follows it.

as much of a sucker as i can be for a batman-off, what the hell is going on in Future State Gotham???
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This whole series has been so weirdly aimless and just kind of limping along from cameo to cameo. Now we've got the truly hideous FS:Nightwing in an ugly cross between that nonsensically padded up Nightwing outfit and what looks like the old Batwing outfit? (also he's psychic now???) Damian's gone full Son of the Bat again. Grifter's back from hell after Next Joker ate his face? Dark Detective Bruce is still faffing about but now everyone knows he's out there, thus ruining the entire premise of FS:Dark Detective. And of course Jace is still running around as Next Batman, but with increasingly little relevance...
As much as I wanted to like Jace, they just did not give him a strong enough motive for being Batman, and it keeps undermining his whole M.O. Honestly, Luke would've made a stronger case for a new Batman as a matter of his father's legacy as the genius engineer behind the bat-arsenal.
Or hell, Duke even, as the one Batkid really committed to not living in Bruce's shadow, plus a neon radiant cyberpunk Gotham would be such a cool backdrop for Duke to really flex his powers. Instead he's off doing whatever half-baked nonsense he's doing with Black Lightning being turned into a big anime-ass sword...

Ok, I've been thinking about this a lot since I've been trying to come up with an AU that includes all the batkids including Terry and Matt. And I have a few names I slotted into the Robin spot for Cass, but mostly I've been thinking about how the vibe of Robin changes with Batman!Cass.
First off, they have to be well trained even before they get to Cass, and preferably have a skill they actually do better than her at the start. This is because Cass knows she's the best, knows she can survive anything her enemies can throw at her, and so her instinct would be to shield anyone with her that isn't at least close to her level. Batman and Robin is a partnership, it doesn't work if Cass doesn't at least trust that if she leaves them alone they won't die immediately. The skill they do better is to get their foot in the door, so Cass is forced to work with them for at least a case and be impressed by their ability to hold their own.
Another thing is the age. Bruce I think needed a literal junior partner because he needed a feeling of control. He did well fitting in to the mentor roll, and later comics have had him struggle with letting others have control as they grow up. Cass' control issues are more about herself then anyone else, so its possible that her partner doesn't have to be younger than her. She could work with say, Stephanie, as her partner. But we haven't really had the chance to see Cass in a mentor roll with someone much younger then her, and I feel like it would be an interesting story to tell. What does Cass pass on from her own mentors, how does training someone herself make her view her time with Cain?
Lastly, Robin is the light to Batman's darkness. Both Bruce and Cass share a tendency to focus on the mission exclusively, so Robin needs to be there to remind her that their are other important things. Not necessarily civilian life, because Cass has been uncomfortable before when pushed to act like a normal civilian, but she does need to be reminded that their are things other than fighting. Also, Cass has more of a self destructive streak then Bruce, I think. If things get bad enough that Robin has to pull Batman back from the brink, it's very likely their going to have to pull Cass back from harming herself as well.
Batman!Cass has so much interesting story potential, I hope to someday get the chance to actually write something for her.
Ok so I think it’s pretty universally agreed upon that Cass is the best option for Batman when Bruce retires (shut up he comes to terms with the fact that he can’t be Batman forever and that obsessing over it could potentially destroy both Gotham and himself, including Batman’s reputation and therefore the fear and grudging respect criminals have for him), but who will be her Robin? Batgirl and Batwoman are powerful, significant symbols in their own right, so I think Cass would take up the mantle as “Batman.” She probably won’t need a Robin in the same way Bruce does (although most of his children were like “you can teach me but you can’t stop me”), but still, “Batman needs a Robin.” Idk, something about the duo is so iconic to me that it’s worth wondering. Thoughts?

"Call me Ishmael" is supposedly a famous quote from Moby-Dick.
before jason picked up robin, bruce and jason ran through like a whole SLEW of possible options and i can't believe nobody ever told me that so many of fandom's suggested alternative hero names have a basis in canon??
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ishmael (honestly I don't understand this one, google says he is a prophet? someone who understands tell me what it's supposed to mean, if it has a meaning at all)
Wonder-Boy (problem: sounds like bread)
Flying Ace (problem: too barnstormy)
Bluejay (problem: awful)
Cardinal (problem: awful)
Hawkman (problem: there is already one, and he is not a man yet)
Eagle (problem: sounds too big)
Masked Avenger (problem: too corny, and there was one)
Domino (problem: not bad, but doesn't sound right)
Batboy
Son
Friend
Company
Pterodactyl
Kid Dynamite
Sancho Panza (the "squire" to the "knight" Don Quixote and ohoho you have no idea how hard this made me laugh ummm... i mean just watch this summary and you'll get it i think, but i'm assuming jason float this one as a joke)
Little Beaver
Skyhawk
Nightbird
Nighthawk
Skybird
Guano (which google tells me is "the accumulated excrement of seabirds and bats" what the HELL jason)
Tonto (but I don't think that is a good one for white Jason Todd, and neither is Ishmael)
anyway, what i want to say is that there is a distinct lack of LittleBeaver!Jason and Pterodactyl!Jason and KidDynamite!Jason in the fandom, and also a distinct lack of jason making fun of bruce by insinuating that he is in any way similar to don quixote. (also i am intrigued by nightbird and nighthawk, they are conceptually pretty similar to nightwing and nightwing should be created pretty close to this time, i'm guessing they are failed options for nightwing?)

I'm sorry to hear you don't feel safe at your local shop! I'm in a similar boat, so I order my comics from mycomicshop.com. You can order the comics three months ahead of distribution on there for a 30% discount, or their are also often discounts on day of release for less then mint copies.
The only downside is the shipping cost. It is based on weight, with a lower limit that means it isn't worth it to only buy one comic. If you do the math you can probably figure out how many you can buy that would maximize your value, and then look through thier catalog for cheap comics you want to fill out the count. But if this is the only comic you want, then it's not a good choice.
i,,, have a mighty need for the travis moore variant cover of the dc pride tim drake special coming out later this year, but the thought of going into my local comic book shop which is KnownTM for being sexist and buying a pride comic strikes up such a specific type of anxiety in me that ill probably end up paying double the price online for it instead lmao it's just so nice 😭
Oh no!
That majorly sucks, dude. I have a few shops by me and most of them seem to be fairly chill, (ie staffed by women and queer-presenting people) but I recognize that it is not the norm for the majority of comic shops.
I guess it’s good that you have access to buying online, but I wish I had some sort of resource for you to find a more welcoming comic space in your area. Short of me teleporting to wherever you are and just walking in to buy the Travis Moore variant cover for you, I got nothin 😔
Sorry, pal.
(If anyone has any resources or websites for finding queer/female-friendly shops, please feel free to reblog or reply or something.)

Dang, now I am officially invested in this Dark Crisis event. If they bring the YJ team back together, even for a miniseries, I'm going to have find out what's going on instead of ignoring it.

Haven't had the chance to see the movie yet, so I can't recommend based on that, but if you want Batfam dynamics you should defiantly check out 'Batman Murderer?' And 'Batman Fugitive'.
Bruce Wayne is framed for a murder so well that some of the bat family are starting to doubt his innocence. But while the rest of the family is trying to clear his name, Bruce makes a decision. If being Bruce Wayne is now a liability, he simply won't! He escapes, fakes his flight to South America, and decides to take up being Batman full time, instead of trying to clear his name. But not everyone thinks this is the best decision.
It's a really good story where Bruce and a lot of the members of his family at the time of the comic get the chance to shine. I can't recommend it enough for someone just trying to get into comics.
Genuine question, can y'all recommend some good Batman/Batfamily comics for beginners? Or whatever comics The Batman 2022 is based on? I think Batman: Year One is one of the main inspirations for the movie, but I'm interested in more! Just recommend me whatever has the best Batfamily dynamics! And is Frank Miller a good writer?
Thanks! :D

The problem with that is comic characters are essentially toys that will be played with for eternity. One writer pulls the Riddler out of the toy box for a story, Eddie has some shenanigans, and then he goes back to the box ready to be pulled out agian by another writer. This means that nothing too catastrophic can happen to the toys people actually want to play with, because no one wants to keep track of things like injuries from past stories (didn't Eddie get punched in the face a lot last time? Shouldn't he have a crooked nose?)
Which leads to a situation where Batman can and does do a lot of technichly torturous things... to the help. The henchpeople, the no names, the people doing the dirty work. But the minute he gets face to face with the ringleader, someone who's name we know and want to see agian he just. Can't. Do any of that. It doesn't matter what we just saw Batman do to get information from some random gang member, it doesn't matter what the rogue has done this time, it doesn't even matter how bad the fight looks on the page! They still go back to the toy box that is Arkham, and we the audience are told they will make a full recovery.
Status que trumps everything, even story logic.
thinking abt how the comics should’ve capitalized on batman’s brutality (which, correct me if i’m wrong please, is him ‘losing’ control) in the sense that people will give him shit for having a no kill rule and he’s just like “nah see what you REALLY need to do is make the shitheads suffer. break some legs, pound some heads, put a few in body casts. yeah they’ll come back but that just means they’re getting beat up again. death is the easy way out.” and then he just para-glides out of there or something

https://daydreamerdrew.tumblr.com/post/672340665149112320/an-overview-of-billy-batsons-relationship-with
This is an overview of Bruce and Billy's past interactions, but the first two sections detail when Bruce figured out Billy's identity!
The tl:dr is that they were both on a Justice League team for a time, in which Bruce shows no sign of knowing Billy's identity. Billy eventually leaves the team, and later Bruce comes to Fawcett city on a case and recruits Billy, revealing he knows his identity. So he either figured it out when Billy was on the team and didn't mention it, or figured it out "off screen" sometime later.
So it may be slightly batsue "Bruce knows everything" but it does have comic history.
ok not to be too much ‘get up, rant about fandom on main’ first thing in the morning but is the whole ‘batman knows that captain marvel is a kid, the rest of the league doesn’t’ thing pretty much invented by Young Justice, or is there a comics basis (that was written before YJTV)?
(from comics i remember STARGIRL knows billy is a kid and the rest of the JSA doesnt)
like i remember rolling my eyes so hard in young justice when it was revealed cuz it seemed like batman just knew to make him look cool but it really just came off likea patented batsue moment where bruce can’t ever just have a human level of knowledge and has to know things even there’s no real way for him to know or that the writer doesn’t care establishing why he can know it, because they just assume hte viewer thnks ‘oh that makes sense batman should know things with no work’ because they assume the viewer has bought into batsue
