Zombie make up tutorial
If you plan on cosplaying a zombie or participating in multiple zombie walks, buying some theatrical make up is worth the money. It has better color and blends better than cheaper alternatives (see my eye shadow zombie tutorial). For this tutorial I will be using Ben Nye brand make up...although any quality cream make up will work.
For this tutorial you will need:
A pale flesh color
Grey and a brown
Black and red
Final Finish make up sealant
I recommend Ben Nye's Monster Wheel (bottom right) and the Bruise Wheel (top). Both have a lot of useful colors for zombie and gore effects. The lighting in my apartment isn't very good so I apologize that some colors do not show up well....I'll circle the shaded areas to help out because of this.
1. Take the pale flesh color and spread it all over your face. You can use a make up brush or sponge or your fingers. The make up doesn't have to be even, zombies don't have great skin.
2. Once everything is nice and pale use the grey. The goal is to look skeletal, so the grey needs to help your eyes appear sunken in and your face to look gaunt. Spread the grey around the eyes, under the jaw line, along the temples, and neck. Spread grey along the sides of the nose to make it look narrower and on the lips to make the lips look necrotic.
3. Add a dark brown over the grey areas. Leave it patchy. The grey and the brown together will make everything look more sunken in.
4. This is when having a bruise wheel is fun. Use colors like dark blue, green, purple and add patches near the eyes, jaw, mouth. The colors will make the face look more bruised and necrotic.
5. Next add the black. Black adds some more depth and contrast.
6. Add the red for blood effects
7. A deep red or a purple can be used to give the blood more depth.
8. Use Ben Nye Final Seal: Matte make up seal to prevent the make up from smudging.
Play around and have fun! You'll figure out what works and what type of zombie look you like. For more effects use Ben Nye gel blood and Ben Nye Stage blood (it's peppermint flavored so you can put it in your mouth).
And some zombie walk pictures for fun :) The same make up procedure was used on all three zombies below, gel blood and stage blood were also used.
Have fun!

5 minute zombie makeup tutorial using only eyeshadow
I've been doing zombie make up for zombie crawls for a couple of years now. Although I wouldn't consider myself an expert I've had some people request some tips on easy zombie make up. So this post will cover how to do zombie make up with cheap eye shadow. Look for my other tutorial on using theatrical make up.
So here is one of my zombies using theatrical make up and latex just for fun. I really enjoyed working with the ripped off lips look.
The Eye Shadow Zombie:
You won't get the nice gross death color tones as with theatrical make up, but using cheap eye shadow is inexpensive and easy for beginners.
What you will need:
An eye shadow palate with a neutral color lighter than your skin tone, several shades of brown, and a black.
Concealer or nude lipstick (optional, but it works well for pale lips)
Because most people viewing this probably have limited make up supplies I am going to do the make up using my fingers and no brushes. Remember, you are a zombie...the make up can be patchy, it doesn't need to look perfectly blended.
1. Apply the light color all over your face. Again it can be smudgy zombies don't have perfect skin.
2. Apply the nude lip stick or concealer on your lips. This will make your lips look pale, it is not essential but it adds to the zombie effect. The result of steps 1 and 2 will look like this:
3. Use the lighter brown color and smudge it around your eyes. Also place the light brown just under your jaw line and along your temples. Some of the brown can also be placed around your lips.
4. Use a darker brown color and place it in a similar areas as the previous brown. The dark brown needs to be closer to your eye lids and not spread up to your eyebrows as the previous brown was. Don't blend too much, keep it patchy.
5. Add black, blend it into the dark brown to create more depth.
6. Mess up your hair. You can use gel, tease the hair, etc.
That is a fast, easy zombie using only eye shadow. If you want to seal the powder I would recommend "Ben Nye Final Seal: Matte makeup sealer."
Blood effects can be added using Ben Nye blood gel. The Star Trek zombies below were made using eye shadow and blood gel.....because I forgot my good make up for comic con....
And we got to meet Max brooks....author of World War Z and Zombie Survival Guide :)
Good luck and have fun!
I will be posting a tutorial on using theatrical make up and latex basics in future posts :)
