🔹 We are growing all the time - it may not be in the way or direction we had once hoped for as life has a way of taking us on journeys we did not envisage or anticipate. Sometimes our growth can be actually be stifling - if we learn unhelpful coping strategies that prevent positive change, the growth in the unhelpful habit expands, stretches and forms better ways of establishing itself. Unhelpful behaviours can quickly act as a way suppressing emotions that seem overwhelming and can quickly confirm negative self beliefs like ‘I can’t do it so there’s no use trying’. If the unhelpful growth continues and isn’t challenged the unhelpful beliefs and thoughts can soon create an environment where change is really tough. Much harder than it initially may have been. 🔹 Natural growth doesn’t mean giving in to what may be easier to do. It can mean to try to follow what feels natural, right and positive. Following your interests, pursuits and interests because they make you feel grounded and fulfilled rather than doing what you think is expected of you by friends, family, society as a tick box exercise. Obviously we all have duties and responsibilities but your self care needs to be something that allows you to grow. To grow naturally and to grow freely in ways you may not have thought about. 🔹 there are many unhelpful myths about eating disorders. This one focusses on the severity being minimal because a choice to control eating is involved. There are complex biological, social and psychological components involved in the development and maintenance of an eating disorder. In most cases the eating disorder becomes the primary way of coping with intense emotions and adverse life experiences. ⠀⠀ 🔹 recovery is not an easy process and it’s certainly not a matter of simply choosing to eat more/less food. Recovery involves addressing key issues which are often highly emotive and difficult to face. Recovery is much more than simply changing eating habits. ⠀⠀ 🔹 whilst there are more females who present with eating disorders, there are a growing number of men who are also opening up about their eating disorder. Out of the 1.6 million people affected by an eating disorder in the UK, 11% are male. 🔹 The term core strength is mostly associated with exercise - strengthening your core muscles through various physical techniques. This is no doubt important. However core strength is also a term that can be borrowed to refer to psychological well-being. Building an inner resilience to guard against the stresses we all experience in life. 🔹 Exposure response prevention is a frontline treatment for OCD. It has been proven to be extremely effective in managing symptoms related to obsessions and compulsions. It involves exposure to the feared stimuli alongside a simultaneous prevention of a ritual. The person is essentially faced with their fear and refrains from ritualising. Initially it can be extremely anxiety provoking, but with time the anxiety should start to lessen. 🔹 It often surprises me when I hear comments about those in therapy being regarded as weak minded. More so when I hear comments about OCD being a desired experience, because it would be nice to like to clean (no reference to the emotional and mental pain accompanying the cleaning rituals). 🔹 Exposure response prevention is not for the weak willed. In fact it would challenge most people to be faced with their worst fear knowing that they can’t rely on what has worked for them previously. 🔹 Have you ever heard anyone say ‘I’m so OCD’ because they like things to be neat and tidy? OCD is not just about needing things to be tidy. OCD is not a pleasant experience. OCD is not a choice. It is a serious mental health difficulty that consumes a persons life through obsessions and compulsions. 🔹 Obsessions are unwanted thoughts, images or ideas that occur repeatedly and are outside of the persons control, for example the belief that counting to 50 will stop something bad from happening. 🔹 Some people feel as though they have to do something repeatedly even if they don’t want to - these are called compulsions, for example repeatedly checking that the cooker is off. 🔹 OCD is an anxiety disorder which can be debilitating and can have a huge impact on a persons family. 🔹 A person with OCD can seek help by accessing psychological therapy. 🔹Perfectionism - something to strive for or something to avoid? 🔹Perfectionism can be great in helping us to work towards goals and push ourselves further. It can be something that helps us to venture into new avenues and strive for success. Letting go can be so very hard to do, no matter what it is that you’re letting go of. At this time of year the focus of letting go mostly falls on bad habits with the emphasis being on self improvement. This week I was sharply reminded by the death of a beloved colleague to cancer, that the process of letting go sometimes starts with a forced, harsh and numbing experience. Families and friends do not chose to let go of loved ones, but are forced to start that process. It is not one of choice. A blunt reminder that life is precious and that, before our chance passes us by, it’s so important to give ourselves permission to let go of things that are holding us back now...not tomorrow...if you envisage yourself in 5 years time what is it that you see yourself having completely let go of? Welcome 2019. I’m sure that the majority of the developed world spent time last night/early morning celebrating or marking the end of 2018 and welcoming in the new year...conversations would have been had about new years resolutions, lessons learnt and experiences that would rather be left behind rather than taken forward into the new year.
