The Boring Company has been pitching potential clients on a much wider tunnel than any it has built so far, Bloomberg reported, which could be used to transport freight. Since its inception in 2016, the Elon Musk-helmed tunneling startup has been focused on tunnels that would transport passengers, with a goal to “solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic” in cities. But the new pitch deck Bloomberg obtained shows how wider tunnels could be used for transporting freight, something that would greatly expand Boring’s potential business. According to Bloomberg, the company’s new pitch includes tunnels that are 21 feet in diameter, nearly twice the size of the 12-foot tunnels the company has built so far, which could accommodate two shipping containers side by side. The company most recently completed 1.7 miles of tunnel under Las Vegas. That’s part of a larger proposal to build a massive tunnel system running under the whole city, including the Las Vegas Strip and McCarran International Airport. The Boring Company has claimed such a system could handle roughly 50,000 passengers per hour. The current tunnel under Las Vegas is meant to eventually transport some 4,400 people each hour, but a TechCrunch report suggested that company documents show it may only be able to transport 1,200 people per hour. _ Hashtags : #theboringcompany #tunnel #report #elon #musk #traffic #freight #shipping #traffic #news https://www.instagram.com/p/CQTyqDnHnOf/?utm_medium=tumblr

As a massive bubble encasing the solar system that stretches across tens of billions of miles and protects us from harmful interstellar radiation, there is a lot for us to learn about the heliosphere. Scientists have uncovered some new details around this complex patch of the universe, by producing the first ever map of its boundary, where solar winds are brought to a stop by the interstellar medium. The groundbreaking map was produced by scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), who tapped into a decade's worth of data collected over an entire solar cycle between 2009 and 2019. This intel was gathered by NASA’s Earth-orbiting Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) satellite, which was launched in 2008 with the intention of studying the interactions between the interstellar medium and solar winds that emanate outwards from the Sun at up to one million mph (1.6 million km/h). _ Hashtags : #solarsystem #interstellar #heliosphere #scientists #map #laboratory #nasa #earth #study #sun #news https://www.instagram.com/p/CQMKdp7nPRy/?utm_medium=tumblr

Niantic is expanding from cute critters to giant robots. Today, the game developer announced its next project: a location-based augmented reality game called Transformers: Heavy Metal. The game is expected to launch globally this year, with a soft launch in select countries “soon.” Niantic says that it has partnered with Seattle-based studio Very Very Spaceship, which will be leading development. You might be wondering just how towering transforming robots will translate to Pokémon Go-style gameplay. Here’s the basic description from Niantic: In Transformers: Heavy Metal, players will join the Guardian Network, a group of humans who have banded together with the Autobots in a war against the Decepticons. As a Guardian, players will uncover hidden regions across Earth to find resources and battle Decepticons in turn-based battles, either solo or with friends. _ Hashtags : #Niantic #robots #game #ar #vr #transformers #pokemongo #humans #earth #news https://www.instagram.com/p/CQJgTRxH9Yk/?utm_medium=tumblr

Starbucks Corp. has filed new trademark applications that could let it use its name on a stadium, entertainment space or sports training facility. The coffee giant is seeking to register the use of its name and familiar mermaid logo for “promoting business, sports and entertainment events of others” and “providing stadium and training facilities for sports and entertainment activities,” according to a June 2 filing. The applications were filed noting an “intent to use” the name. Starbucks wouldn’t be able to actually receive the registered trademark until it shows proof of using it in commerce. _ Hashtags : #starbucks #trademark #stadium #entertainment #space #sports #training #coffee #business #news #event #commerce https://www.instagram.com/p/CQEUWTKn41U/?utm_medium=tumblr

Netflix has been selling its subscription products direct-to-consumer since it was founded more than two decades ago. Now the streaming giant has launched Netflix.shop — the company’s first owned-and-operated retail outlet to sell products directly. Of course, Netflix already has licensing deals for hundreds of products based on its original programming, sold by Target, Walmart, Amazon, H&M, Sephora and other retailers. So what’s the point of Netflix having its own ecommerce presence? According Josh Simon, Netflix’s VP of consumer products, the website is “an exciting new destination combining curated products and rich storytelling in a uniquely Netflix shopping experience.” Netflix.shop will sell exclusive, limited editions of “carefully selected, high-quality apparel and lifestyle products tied to our shows and brand on a regular basis,” Simon, who joined Netflix last year from Nike, wrote in a blog post announcing the site. _ Hashtags : #netflix #shopify #product #license #target #amazon #walmart #h&m #retailers #consumer #nike #strangerthings https://www.instagram.com/p/CP-_q6-ndJk/?utm_medium=tumblr

Android and Windows users have a reason to celebrate: Soon, you'll be able to join your iPhone-wielding friends on FaceTime calls. Apple revealed the news at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, alongside a number of other updates to iOS, iPadOS and MacOS. FaceTime is getting several upgrades in the upcoming iOS 15 operating system that will make it look and work more like Zoom and Microsoft Teams, including a participant grid view and the ability to schedule calls. The new OS will also bring spatial audio to FaceTime, which will make people's voices sound like they're coming from their position on screen for a more natural feel. But perhaps most exciting is opening up access to non-Apple devices -- at least when using a web browser. iOS 15 will be generally released in the fall (here's how to download the developer beta version now). Once you've downloaded the new operating system, here's how you'll be able to join FaceTime calls, no matter what device you're using. _ Hashtags : #android #apple #ios #mobile #phone #video #call #facetime #ios15 #developers https://www.instagram.com/p/CP5tmmjHuIl/?utm_medium=tumblr

Jeff Bezos will be flying to space on the first crewed flight of the New Shepard, the rocket ship made by his space company, Blue Origin. The flight is scheduled for July 20th, just 15 days after he is set to resign as CEO of Amazon. Blue Origin said Bezos' younger brother, Mark Bezos, will also join the flight. "Ever since I was five years old, I've dreamed of traveling to space," Bezos, 57, said in a Monday morning Instagram post. "On July 20th, I will take that journey with my brother. The greatest adventure, with my best friend." If all goes according to plan, Bezos — the world's richest person with a net worth of $187 billion — will be the first of the billionaire space tycoons to experience a ride aboard the rocket technology that he's poured millions into developing. Not even Elon Musk, whose SpaceX builds rockets powerful enough to enter orbit around Earth, has announced plans to travel to space aboard one of his companies human-worthy crew capsules. British billionaire Richard Branson, whose own space company, Virgin Galactic, is planning on conducting flights to suborbital space for ultra-wealthy thrill seekers and competing directly with Blue Origin. Branson has long said he would be among the first passengers aboard Virgin Galactic's rocket-powered plane, but that flight is expected to take place later in 2021. _ Hashtags : #jeff #bezos #blueorigin #space #flight #billionaire #crew #rocket #ship #nasa #spacex https://www.instagram.com/p/CP06W_ZH73S/?utm_medium=tumblr

On May 27, Tesla filed applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to use its “T” logo design and two other iterations of its “Tesla” stylized logo for use in the food industry. All three applications are for “restaurant services, pop-up restaurant services, self-service restaurant services, take-out restaurant services.” They are filed under a provision of trademark law indicating that Tesla intends to use the mark but has not yet done so. If the application is approved, the registration will not take effect until it is used. #tesla #restaurant #logo #trademark #services #application #law #elon #musk #food #industry https://www.instagram.com/p/CPyYewhH24m/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Biden administration is expanding a Trump-era order that banned U.S. investment in Chinese companies that support China’s military to include those selling surveillance technology, calling the entities a threat to U.S. interests and values. A new executive order released Thursday broadens prohibitions that Donald Trump’s administration enacted and moves authority for the ban to the Treasury Department from the Defense Department, to give it stronger legal grounding, senior administration officials said. They spoke on the condition of anonymity to preview the order before its release. The new order “prevents U.S. investment from supporting the Chinese defense sector, while also expanding the U.S. government’s ability to address the threat of Chinese surveillance technology firms that contribute — both inside and outside China — to the surveillance of religious or ethnic minorities or otherwise facilitate repression and serious human rights abuses,” the administration said in a fact-sheet describing the ban, which takes effect on Aug. 2. _ Hashtags : #Biden #trump #investment #china #surveillance #company #ban #threat #interest #value #order #government https://www.instagram.com/p/CPs-cepHKE4/?utm_medium=tumblr

Married Chinese couples may have up to three children, China announced on Monday, in a major shift from the existing limit of two after recent data showed a dramatic decline in births in the world’s most populous country. Beijing scrapped its decades-old one-child policy in 2016, replacing it with a two-child limit to try and stave off risks to its economy from a rapidly aging population. But that failed to result in a sustained surge in births given the high cost of raising children in Chinese cities, a challenge that persiststo this day. The policy change will come with "supportive measures, which will be conducive to improving our country's population structure, fulfilling the country's strategy of actively coping with an ageing population", the official Xinhua news agency said following a politburo meeting chaired by President Xi Jinping. Among those measures, China will lower educational costs for families, step up tax and housing support, guarantee the legal interests of working women and clamp down on "sky-high" dowries, it said, without giving specifics. It would also look to educate young people "on marriage and love". _ Hashtags : #married #china #couple #children #limit #shift #data #birthrate #economy #surge #birth https://www.instagram.com/p/CPn_4QAnCeJ/?utm_medium=tumblr

Troops on US bases in Europe housing nuclear weapons have been using publicly accessible online flashcard apps to remember long and complex security protocols, the investigative website Bellingcat revealed on Friday. The military personnel turned to sites such as Quizlet, Chegg Prep and Cram to memorize codes, jargon and even the status of nuclear vaults, according to the report. While European governments generally refuse to confirm or deny the specific locations of US nuclear weapons being stored within their borders, leaked documents, photos and comments by retired officials often confirm the presence of the weapons. The latest leaks, however, have gone so far as to identify the exact number and location of the weapons within the bases, including whether the vaults they are stored in are "hot" — with live weapons — or "cold." _ Hashtags : #unitedstates #army #europe #nuclear #weapons #flashcard #online #security #bellingcat #vaults #government #report https://www.instagram.com/p/CPfn8fTHpc4/?utm_medium=tumblr

Alphabet Inc.’s Google failed to persuade a judge to block class-action status for a gender-pay disparity lawsuit brought on behalf of almost 11,000 women. A San Francisco state judge certified the class action Thursday, allowing the four lead plaintiffs to represent 10,800 women over claims that Google pays men more for doing the same job. A previously disclosed analysis showed that the case seeks more than $600 million in damages. The women allege violations of California’s Equal Pay Act, one of the strongest measures of its kind nationwide. “This is a significant day for women at Google and in the technology sector, and we are so proud of our brave clients for leading the way,” Kelly Dermody, a lawyer representing the women, said in an email. “This order shows that it is critical that companies prioritize paying women equitably over spending money fighting them in litigation.” _ Hashtags : #alphabetinc #google #judge #status #genderequity #women #equalpay #analysis #job #technology https://www.instagram.com/p/CPdmYs8nSLV/?utm_medium=tumblr

For those starting new jobs during the pandemic, welcome drinks and informal chats by the coffee machine have been replaced by formal meetings over Zoom. That lack of bonding time with other colleagues poses a problem for employers, who are less likely to retain those new hires than if they’d joined back when people worked primarily out of offices, according to a new study. The differences are modest but meaningful. Of more than 1,000 employees surveyed in March, 73% of those who joined in the past year reported feeling like part of the team, vs. 78% among those hired in the previous two years, according to the study released on May 26 by Perceptyx Inc. of Temecula, Calif., a specialist in what it calls employee listening. Sixty-four percent felt their employers cared about their health and well-being, vs. 71% in the pre-Covid cohort. _ Hashtags : #people #hire #pandemic #quit #jobs #healthcare #team #wellbeing #survey https://www.instagram.com/p/CPbJdShHHXV/?utm_medium=tumblr

Roblox was accused in a federal lawsuit of ripping off users - mostly children - of its popular gaming platform by selling them in-game items and later deleting them without reimbursement. Users of the virtual world platform purchase extra items for their characters in the company's Avatar Shop. Those items include digital clothes and accessories. The objects are created by both Roblox and outside developers, with the company earning a 30 per cent commission on third-party sales. The company doesn't immediately vet products put on sale but will later delete them citing violations of the game's moderation policies. The policies ban items deemed inappropriate, such as those that include pornographic images or reproductions of copyrighted logos. "The company's decision to sell first and 'moderate' later has obvious monetary benefit for Roblox," according to the lawsuit. "By the time defendant has deleted items from the Avatar Shop and users' inventories, it has already taken its 30 per cent commission from the sale." _ Hashtags : #roblox #federal #lawsuite #popular #gaming #character #avatar #company #products #policy #cheating #children https://www.instagram.com/p/CPYi0K1nfhe/?utm_medium=tumblr
