So... What's Up With Betas?

Most verses I've seen have betas as the sort of "normal" or "default" dynamic. Alphas experience ruts, omegas experience heats, and betas are essentially just normal humans. There's nothing wrong with that, but I like to make betas "equal" to alphas and omegas in "non-humanness"

Quick biology background for my verse: most commonly, if someone is born with a just a penis, they are either going to be an alpha male or a beta male; if someone is born with just a vagina, they are either going to be an omega female or a beta female; if someone is born with some variety of both sets of external genitalia, they could become an alpha female, and omega male, or are an intersex beta. This is what is considered most typical or common. Within each combination of gender and dynamic, there are "intersex" spectrums (intersex in quotes because it isn't exactly the same as our worlds intersex). Gender is what's assumed/"assigned" at birth based on genitalia; because of the vast variety of possibilities, being transgender is fairly common and completely accepted. Dynamics are determined later in life as hormones develop (sex is determined by the same hormones we have, but dynamics are controlled/influenced by a separate set of hormones. I'm not a scientist so I probably will never exactly pin down specifics on that, but there's essentially and alpha hormone and an omega hormone). At some point I'm going to make a post going into more depth about all of this.

Anyway! Onto the point of this post! Alphas still have ruts and omegas still have heats. Knots are probably mostly hormonal (haven't entirely pinned it down as, again, not a scientist), but alpha penises tend to have extra skin near the base of the penis and the scrotum, so when a knot forms it has room and is not painful. Slick is produced by glands. Betas don't tend to have that extra skin and don't tend to have those glands, but since it is far more common to be "intersex" due to all the "options" available, it can happen. Regardless of whether a beta has either of these, betas can experience what I'm currently calling "pseudo-ruts", "pseudo-heats", and "pseudo-knots". The "pseudo" is tacked on because they aren't the norm and, even in betas that experience them, not super common. The pseudo-knots tend to be smaller and last for less time (although they can form and act exactly like an alphas would), and very rarely happen for a reason other than pseudo-rut or helping someone with heat. Pseudo-heats and pseudo-ruts most commonly occur due to a trigger; usually this trigger is a partner experiencing a heat or rut (the beta would experience the opposite), sometimes even just a crush being in heat or rut, and sometimes due to some other external stimuli (like pheromones or something). Sometimes a pseudo-heat or pseudo-rut is triggered by some internal hormonal shift. Essentially, there are many things that can cause them.

Now to get a little more specific. Any beta of any sex can experience a pseudo-rut or pseudo-heat. For pseudo heats in betas with vaginas, the hormones can cause an increase in discharge. If a beta happens to have the glands that secrete slick, the pseudo-heat will activate those. For pseudo-ruts in betas with penises, they will very often form pseudo-knots. A beta without a penis can also experience a pseudo-rut, although it is essentially all hormonal/physiological, as they can't form a knot. Aside from potential physical differences, pseudo-heats and pseudo-ruts are just like regular heats and ruts. The ones that are triggered by external stimuli tend to last only as long as "needed," whereas the ones caused by internal triggers can last just as long as a typical heat or rut.

I really like this russian edition of classic books. Letting famous artists do the covers in YA style was such a simple but clever decision. According to the recent study the number of teenage readers increased, possibly thanks to these covers. I own traditional classics with blank covers but if I ever see one of these in the wild, it’ll probably make me go feral.
