Trans*portation
Here is how I go through security at the airport in 10 easy steps...
Having had the privilege of being able to travel to many places (and being from Hawai’i), I have flown on many airplanes in my lifetime.
My father was (and is) a stickler for efficiency in life, but especially in an airport. He travels frequently for his job and because of this he knows the protocol and I have learned from him. I have developed my own variation on the system he has taught me, but…

My (r)Evolution of "My Person"
I spent most of my life without "my person". I had people who loved me and people I trusted (and still trust), but I didn't find "my person" until my junior year of high school.
Read this: What It Is Like To Have Met “Your Person,” As Told By “Grey’s Anatomy”
The BuzzFeed article above got me thinking about who “my person” was and who “my person” is now, and I want to share my personal experience of the “my person” phenomenon in my life.

Advice for Allies
One of the students in the theatre class I am a TA for came up to me after class today because their friend had recently come out as trans* and they wanted to know how they could best support their friend and their friend’s new identity. However, this is where things can get a little more complex on top of all the other complexities if you identify as queer. Everyone is different and everyone…

Small Talk. Big Steps.
http://wp.me/p4Ubya-2f
I recently watched the film Kinky Boots and, I must say, it was pretty great.
For those of you who haven’t watched the film, seen the Tony Award-Winning Musical, or listened to the Original Broadway Cast recording, let me fill you in on the story in four sentences:
Charlie Price suddenly finds himself the new proprietor of his father’s shoe factory that is losing it’s foothold (pun intended) in…

I thought that my first celebrity crush was the boy from Free Willy, Jesse, played by Jason James Richter. He was a rebel, but really loved Willy and wanted to save him. He was a smart ass, but he knew to follow his heart, even if it meant doing what some people considered to be wrong. Jesse was perfect and although I couldn't find the words to say it, I wanted to be him. This was a question that I subconsciously asked myself for many, many years, but never quite understood how to articulate it out loud.

Social Jaywalking (Part 1)
Social Jaywalking (Part 1) "Social jaywalking prevents a person from taking the time to think past an individual experience and allowing the possibility of that individual experience being the exception instead of the rule."
It’s just another day with my friends downtown. I’m happy to be hanging with all of them, but I also know that I will inevitably have to do something I really, very strongly, almost-hate to do — jaywalk.
“But you always jaywalk,” they joke, “’cause you’re J.! [insert laughter].” It was (kinda) funny the first time. Now it’s just…old, but I digress.
In Hawai‘i, jaywalking is illegal and police…

Why I Never Want to Be a "Straight Man" (Part 1)
I distinctly remember a conversation I had with some friends a few months after coming out a Transgender.
They were all working on a homework assignment and I was overseeing their tasks from the bed. I’m not quite sure how the subject came about, but I remember saying something to the effect of, “Yeah. It’s kinda weird, but I’m ‘straight’ now.” The silence and look of “Wait…what? Ooooh yeah.” on…

My One Year Trans*versary
My One Year Trans*versary
My one year anniversary of coming out as Trans* Man came and went with little to do out of the ordinary.
In fact, I’d need to look at a calendar in order to give a specific date, but that’s where it gets complicated. I was first referred to with male pronouns (in my presence) at the Allied Media Conference (AMC), but I didn’t “officially” come out while at the conference. I then came out to the…

To Save and Be Saved
I thought for the longest time that I was indebted to you.
You saved me.
Stayed with me.
Encouraged me.
Anchored me through the roughest of storms.
But now I see, oh so clearly, that this
savior complex/free pass/only exception privilege I have given you is:
false
pointless
dumb
and a blatant waste of my time.
So please
just
go.
I don't need to save you anymore
and most importantly
I do not need to be saved
especially by
you.
Goodbye.

Life Lessons
Letting go and holding on are equally painful.
Walking away and waiting patiently are equally dangerous.
Saying goodbye and saying hello are equally heartbreaking.
Trying to live and living to try are equally important.
