Tumblr media
I really debated with myself whether to post this, especially given tumblr's infamous photo quality, but oh well, I figured we're all nerds anyway, and someone will enjoy this.
Some thoughts and rambling under the cut if anyone is interested
I mainly just wanted to draw Arthur kneeling and John shielding him, to be honest.
Arthur (right hand) is clutching John's cloak; John (left hand) is clutching Arthur's shirt and trying to protect his stomach. This gave me a sense of contrast between what John could once do (a powerful king who could shield Arthur and no one would dare touch him) vs what he can do now (nothing but clutch at his shirt, no body to shield him with, only eyes wide open to see for him). I imagine this can make John feel very trapped and useless in the face of danger.
John's hand holding the cloak gave me a bit of a problem, bc the rest of his body is in black, but it wouldn't have stood out if it were dark as well. Then I got an idea, as I had already imagined he isn't actually a shadow monster, but rather, in a classical lovecraftian fashion, human minds couldn't comprehend him. But his left hand is the one he shares with Arthur, bringing it closer to humanity, and thus, making it possible to see and understand with human eyes, even in his king form.
Arthur is also kneeling on John's cloak, which gave me two ideas: First, I imagine that idling on top of a king's or a god's cloak isn't the most polite or respectful thing to do. So, this shows Arthur's general disrespect towards the supernatural. And also, while John might technically be an Eldritch God, he is Arthur's Little Eldritch God, so it doesn't matter. This is his John. Second, cushioning a kneeling person's knees feels kinda intimate, you know? Obviously, there is the sexual angle, which isn't what I'm getting at (my interpretation of their relationship is a very intense something), but our minds make connections. But in general, imagine how many people have knelt in direct worship of John, and how he didn't spare a thought towards them. And now here's this random human who would laugh at the idea of worshipping John, and he is the one who gets his god-damn knees cushioned. If I were a cultist, I would definitely detest Arthur for that.
I had lots of thoughts about John, and not so many about Arthur when drawing this, so he is mostly there to look pretty. This is actually the second version I made, bc in the 1st one I made a mistake I couldn't fix and had to start over. I'm kinda glad I did, bc in the 1st version, Arthur looked a bit too beaten down and helpless for my tastes. In this one, he looks up at the danger and is more ready to fight if the need arises. Bc he is the one who has to be ready. John might want to be all mighty and shield him as he once could have, but in reality, all he can do now is wrinkle Arthur's shirt and warn him of danger with the eyes he is the reason Arthur doesn't have any more :)

I always swing so much between his height. I know he is canonically tall, but as you said it's just the funniest thing on Earth to imagine him as short. I already find it endlessly amusing that Vicky decided to make him look like a 17yo and "rosy as a young girl" (yeah, yeah, he made him be an ideal and also emphasized how they were all very young), but him in addition being short? Giggling and rolling on the floor, top-tier comedy potential
I love tall Enjolras but theres somthing so funny and charming about the leader of a group of revolutionaries being like 5 feet tall

I actually love the fact that they are not. You would kinda expect it, right? Especially from a modern media point of view. I remember when I went to see the stage musical with my mom, and on the drive, I gave her a synopsis/some deeper explanation/things to look out for (she knew the basics of the story). And when I got to Valjean and Fantine, she said nonchalantly, "Oh, yes. They were in love, right?" as if it was oblivious and the delight with which I said, "No, actually–"
Do you ship...

Why have I not seen anyone toy with the idea of Grantaire doing satire political cartoons?
I don't believe he would do it as a form of activism or propaganda. It just seems something he would humor himself with, pass the time at meetings, or doodle as a fun joke when bored. I mean, he does share the other's ideas, he just doesn't believe that they have any hope of bringing change. He definitely won't do them in hopes of them somehow helping The Cause (but maybe his friends would want to publish some, and Grantaire would decide to amuse them and allow it).
He seems like the kind of guy who would enjoy that sort of humor, and you can actually hide a lot of symbolism into these. I have included some examples from the French Revolution period (yes, I'm aware the book is about June Rebellion; it's just examples), and tell me it's not something you can imagine Grantaire doing simply for his amusement

"by OUR standards but not by the majority of the people of the time" is the sentence that was really thought-provoking to me.
He was raised in a society that said he is part of the Bad people, and they are the Good ones (maybe some even meant well by it! Trying to guide this doomed boy to the right path). And he believed them. Maybe he saw how Bad people suffered and Good people (the ones we now see as the oppressors) lived well. Perhaps he saw how some of the Bad people were truly bad (let's say Thénardier type).
Classically, people who have been told by everybody that they are Bad will see it as injustice, or some will believe it and become as bad as everyone expects them to be (for example, Valjean in jail). Javert seems to believe it but tried to become one of the Good people (which was probably the harder path to take as well). Good as the standards of the time said, Good as he was always told is right.
Then he finds out that the Good was wrong ("infallibility is not infallible, there may exist error in the dogma, all has not been said when a code speaks, society is not perfect, authority is complicated with vacillation, a crack is possible in the immutable, judges are but men, the law may err, tribunals may make a mistake!"). In short– his world falls apart, everything is confusing and contradictory, and he does what he can to "escape now from that world." Ending his story in a tragedy (tragedy- a story which's end has been written long before and yet, every action you take is what brings the ruin)
I also want to say that I think a big part of valvert working is Javert's backstory being revealed. How can Jean Valjean look at Javert with judgement in his heart when he, an adult, almost committed murder due to the trauma of being in prison? How can any of us have compassion for Jean Valjean on the basis of his suffering in prison and NOT reflect on that fact that Javert experienced, no doubt, all of that as a young child: the most vulnerable time in his life and during his earliest development.
We talk all the time about mental health and unpacking traumas garnered from childhood but that is a modern benefit we have from being educated on our own well-being. I doubt that the majority of us could begin to comprehend the trauma of literally being born and raised in a prison during a time period where you are considered almost subhuman by nature of your birth.
Javert stood no chance in life, there was no opportunity for him, he did the best he could to survive psychologically and physically in an intolerable existence of poverty, self-loathing, political and social oppression, and an utter absence of faith. Did he do bad things? Yes, by OUR standards but not by the majority of the people of the time which is why Hugo had him do them so he could put across his point of view on the general consensus.
Javert is a tragic figure, a man genuinely trying to do the right thing, despite being pathetic and wretched in every fashion, and in the end being told it was all for nothing.

I'm probably yelling into the void, but anyway. I have been slightly obsessed with Les Mis for a little over a year, and I was reading it in my native language (Estonian). Obviously, I had read before how Grantaire "admired, loved, and venerated Enjolras," but you know how things are more personal in your native language?
English is my 2nd/3rd language, so I didn't know what "venerated" meant at first, I googled it and got my answer, but oh boy, it's something else to read "Grantaire imetles, armastas ja jumaldas teda." Obliviously, the word "love" is more powerful because "love" in English has somehow become just a word, so reading "armastas" on its own was a wow. But reading a word that means worship? As in, Grantaired worshiped Enjolras as if he were a God? That's something else. Like "jumaldama" comes from the word "jumal," which means God.
Was it probably translated like that because there simply isn't a better word in Estonian? Probably. But I do have to go and scream into my pillow now

"Always put in more garlic than the recipe says", my great-grandma used to say. Her daughter listened. My great-grandma died. Her daughter used her old recipes and added more garlic than the recipe said. She wrote her own recipes.

I was bored so I put Batfam into a random incorrect quote generator and I have never had this much fun
Duke, not yet familiar with the family lore: Duke: Live fast, die young, leave behind a pretty corpse! That’s what I always say! jason: You should say something else. Bruce to his friends (aka his children, exes and coworkers): bruce : I am not a lunatic. I have the psychiatric report to prove it. A slender majority of the panel decided in my favour.
Don't have to even say anything about this one: dick as a child: I can’t wait to grow up and have cool adventures! dick now: I can’t wait to go to bed.
Bruce- the first time father: dick: I just drank a lego piece. bruce : …what the hell?! You melted plastic and drank the liquid? dick: Yes. bruce : Why did you even melt a lego in the first place?! dick: Because it looked like chocolate! So I drank it! You know, like a chocolate shake?
Bruce- father of 10+ kids: duke: What do you want for breakfast? damian: I WISH TO DEVOUR THE UNBORN. bruce : bruce : They want eggs.
Classic Tim: tim: I am not an early bird or a night owl. I am some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.
This one hurt: jason: Do you always have to attack me with your words? bruce : Would you prefer me to use a brick?
Tim would answer hazardous waste or something: the Squad cleaning up alfred: Pick up the nearest piece of trash and throw it away. jason, to tim: Aight, which bin do you wanna go in—
This seems right: The gang's thoughts on stabbing bruce : Would never stab anyone. dick: Would stab someone in retaliation. tim: Yells "I won't hesitate, bitch!" first. jason: Would stab without warning. damian: Would stab as a warning.
Tim gets flashbacks: duke: Why would you think any of this was a good idea?! jason: Probably because I’m a dangerous sociopath with a long history of violence. duke: Oh… tim, from across the room: I don’t understand how you keep forgetting that.
Jason the babysitter: tim: jason, I want a bedtime story! jason: I’m busy, tim. I’ll tell you one tomorrow. tim: If you don’t tell me a story, I won’t go to bed! jason: Once upon a time, there was a person named tim, who always wanted things their way. One day, their friends got sick of it and locked them in the basement for the rest of their life. Everyone else lived happily ever after. The end. tim: I don’t like these stories with morals.
Giving advice to the younger ones: jason: Any advice before bruce and I fight? dick: Don’t wet yourself in public. jason: Not the kind of advice I was looking for!
Two professionals speaking: damian: We need a plan to beat them. cass: Okay, listen up. First, we fill their shoes with wet cat food. damian: cass: Judge me all you want, I get results.
Stephanie- one of the Bruce's not kids: stephane : (Talking to Damian) Oh, hi. I didn't see you there. Welcome to my abode. I'm glad you could join me. damian: But this is my abode. stephane : … stephane : Welcome to my abode, I'm so happy to have you, guest.
Ouch: bruce : You’re alive. damian: No need to sound so disappointed.
Little brothers, the sweetest of them all: cass: Ayo, what the FUCK is this?!? jason, sitting down, surrounded by corpses: I won Mafia, that’s what.
The meta joke here: bruce: Dracula had it right, sleep all day, live alone in a castle, and explode into bats to get out of all social situations.

I don't know if I find it funny or devastating, but I'm writing batfam fanfiction, and I was thinking of what would Joker, who knows Hood was Robin mockingly call him. I had a brilliant idea, I was so proud of myself. "Punarind" (translates to "red breast") it fits with the red theme, and it just felt perfect for some reason. I googled what the bird is called in English, praying it's something as fitting. ... it's robin. "Punarind" means robin in English. At least I now know what kind of bird Robin actually is. Just... disappointed, it would have been ✨perfect✨

Humans sometimes say that people with mental health issues “survive but don’t live”, and I really want my language to have some similar saying to express myself.
I feel like only thing I’m doing for the past year is keeping myself upright and somewhat sane and it’s taking all my energy.
I’m hoping that things get better turning summer because they sometimes do but I’m afraid to hope because, what if I’m wrong?
Idk, just wanted to get this off my chest
