i would say its the pressure of the future and destiny. both merlin and arthur second-guessed every decision they made in fear of not bringing a better future for their people, they were confused and scared of the influence they held and were easly manipulated by someone who promised to guide them.

merlin and morgana had the same goal, bring back magic on camelot, both trying to achieve this by manipulating the king of camelot while keeping their "innocent, couldn't hurt a fly" bullshit, BOTH GETTING DISTRACTED BY SAID GOAL BECAUSE OF PERSONAL FEELINGS !!

morgana lost herself on her madness and rage and soon without realizing (even though she was confronted for it several times) her number one priority wasn't bringing back magic, it was revenge.

merlin lost himself on his love and selfishness and without realizing (even though he was confronted for it several times) he stayed on denial and made his number one priority keeping arthur safe, not making him bring back magic.

they both had the same goals, but their personal issues got in the way. hatred and love. revenge and loyalty. two sides of the same coin.

they both knew how it felt to lie to survive and to know with one single fact you couldn't change about yourself everything would change for the worse, they both got it. they both lost themselvs on the pain of it all and that was their doom.

they were eachother's reflecting and dark desires of who the other one wanted to be if they could just "let go." but they both refused to move on.

look, i haven't seen the doctor who "impossible girl" arc BUT i saw an edit without much context so what if i say dreamling AU where Death wasn't with Dream when she granteed Hob's wish and instead of the only rule being "coming back every 100 years and tell your experience" thing, the condition was that at least every 100 years Hob has to find Dream and protect him of whatever is happening or just help him in whatever he can (*cuff* make him feel like he is not alone *cuff*). Now, Dream has no idea his sister has done such thing, so when a human helps him out while he is in the waking world he doesn't think much about it, but then 100 years later is raining and Dream is visiting again and he doesn't have an umbrella until a man gives him his and they walk together, the other man (who's face Dream swears he's seen before, maybe in the dreaming) starts talking about his life and Dream actually listens. And then 100 years again he sees that face again and something is wrong. But he doesn't dare to say anything beacuse the other man is talking and Dream is secretly dying for a friend. Years later Dream is captured and as part of the deal, Hob has to go save him (and also maybe just maybe because he is grown of the celestial being) and Hob "dies" saving him until he is just alive again and finally Dream confronts him and Hob's just go "It's my duty to make sure you're safe, to protect you. It's the whole reason Im still alive, I was chosen for this."
