The first song in this episode is a cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”.
How your leaves turn into compost: Organic Recycling Center
How your leaves turn into compost: Organic Recycling Center
Did you know you can get FREE compost in Philadelphia? Ever wonder what happens with your leaves when you drop them off for recycling? They get shuttled to Fairmount Park’s Organic recycling center. We took a field trip to see the center in full operation. Located at 3850 Ford Road, the Recycling Center is open year-round Monday-Friday from 7:30 AM – 3 PM, and Saturdays from April-October (only…
Unfortunately, that loser is us. Public Access TV just does not seem to be a priority for those who can afford a private or college tech education, increasingly expensive video production equipment, and a premium cable channel package. Perhaps the Digital Age of YouTube and camera phones has changed the tide.
A new Comcast Cable Franchise agreement is going to be presented soon and we are fighting alongside other community media activists to help get funding in the right places.
If you support free speech, media democracy, net neutrality, media literacy education, and nurturing your community, stand beside us.

Today in our “Pizza Rolls Not Gender Roles” workshop PCAM teens learned that society’s concept of how men and women are expected to act and behave doesn’t have to dictate how they live their lives.
PhillyCAM internet radio is here! On October 23, 2015, PhillyCAM celebrates our six year anniversary with the launch of our internet radio station.
The launch of the internet radio stream will feature select shows like: Keith Brand Variety Show, Turning Life's Corners with Daryl Lloyd, Selby Signature Show with Derwood Selby, and Cindy Ortiz Live! It is truly an exciting time for community media.
Such events are relevant in this day and age, as Philadelphia was the last major city to get public access media. After a 27 year long struggle led by community advocates and leaders, PhillyCAM successfully opened its doors in 2009, now cablecasts thousands of hours of programming from the community, and has trained hundreds in media production. Fast forward to 2015, PhillyCAM was awarded a construction permit to broadcast on 106.5 FM in Philadelphia. Currently, we have been working to train radio producers and build a community of volunteers who can help maintain radio standards, work as content producers, increase radio members, and create radio programming. In the next 8 months, we’ll continue growing our radio station and working to be on the FM airwaves by summer of 2016!
In the meantime, we will hear from the following PhillyCAM members who have created content for the launch of our internet radio station:
KEITH BRAND
Keith Brand is currently the Chair of the Radio Television and Film Program at Rowan University in Glassboro NJ and is currently writing a book about community radio in America. He is also the Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for PhillyCAM.
CINDY ORTIZ
Cindy Ortiz is the President of La Placita Wellness and Education Center, Inc. Cindy recently published: What's Eating You Kid? She is producing a radio show at PhillyCAM called “Cindy Ortiz Live” to promote unsung Latino musicians and artists in Philadelphia. The show features Latino artists and musicians from Philly, cover community events, social issues and a health and wellness segment under Fitadelphia.
RICKY PAUL
Ricky Paul aka DJ K-Tell is also a board member of DP Arts Consortium, and Vice Chair on the Board of Directors for PhillyCAM, where ”Dumpsta Players Presents” airs on television each week.
DERWOOD SELBY
With his combined interest in television and film production along with radio, the Philadelphia native now hosts “The Selby Signature”, a food and travel television series. On his radio show, he takes to the streets of Philadelphia and Camden with his co-host Jen-Mosa where he talks food, nutrition and wellness while getting the “Culinary-Cultural Pulse of the People.”
DARYL LLOYD
Daryl is president of The Underground Railroad Museum of Burlington County, NJ.; and president and CEO of Turning Life Corners Internet TV Network.
Philadelphia is making vacant lots, parks, and rain gardens a part of its system to deal with rainwater and runoff during storms. It’s also rethinking parking lot design, and aiming to minimize the amount of impervious pavement used in developed areas. Very cool, with lots of resources.

DeRay will discuss his experiences teaching in the classroom, leading in two urban districts, and protesting nationwide while documenting the movement on Twitter.
DeRay was named by the Los Angeles Times as one of the “new civil rights leaders” for the 21st century and has been featured on CNN with Wolf Blitzer, the Melissa Harris Perry Show, and also writes for the Huffington Post.
The event will be held in Huntsman Hall Room F85.

Last week, we teamed up with Keep Philadelphia Beautiful, the School District of Philadelphia, and some wonderful students at the Julia Reynolds Masterman School to create a PSA to help illustrate the fundamentals of the District’s new recycling program, a part of their 2015-16 sustainability plan, “GreenFutures”.
