Rueben Sondern is a knight from the former kingdom of Asphodelia. He lived and served his kingdom until its sudden and violent demise. His life began quite normally—nicely, even, but gradually went downhill until it got him to the point where he is now.

Rueben's family consisted of a lineage of highly respected royal knights who assisted in the kingdom's militaristic affairs and keeping up morale. Having a lot to live up to, Rueben similarly tried to become a beacon of hope and encouragement (and overall succeeded), but secretly found himself worried if his efforts would be enough. Growing up, he usually excelled in his training to become a knight and made friends easily, but also was a bit of a doormat in trying to keep everyone happy and liking him. He was genuinely nice, friendly, charismatic, and considerate of others, but was often afraid to reveal a deeper side of himself. His insecurities, the worries, the pressure...

Generally, his family had a kind of "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" mentality, where moments of sadness were acknowledged, but not very respected. If not for others, then at least for himself. Sadness makes you less productive, and more self-pitying, and you can't do your best in a state like that! Rueben probably would've fallen apart sooner if he didn't have a close group of friends. In particular, he grew especially close and fond of the princess (Dolores), who had confided her own uglier feelings to him. Nonetheless, they all (in some way) gave him a space to be able to voice these feelings with less fear, and receive comfort instead of dismissal.

...but then the friend group fell apart, sooooo...

Rueben slowly started spiralling, but he kept up doing the good knight stuff in spite of his dwindling mental health. As his relationship with the princess had stayed alive, they still talked often and kept each other afloat. They started considering themselves a couple.

and then he got murdered 👍

and then he didn't because the princess revived him (magic wow)

If you guessed that this affected him badly, then you'd be right. He revived and now had regeneration, meaning that he COULDN'T permanently die anymore and would recover from anything. This is... a blessing and a curse. (The princess gave herself regen, too, so now they both wouldn't die and could stay together no matter what.) While he didn't have to worry about death anymore, he did have to worry about how someone hated him enough to attempt murdering him. His best friend got implicated for the crime, but while the perpetrator LOOKED like him, Rueben was sure it couldn't have been. So... who? And why?

and then the kingdom fell like 2-4 years later. oops

he doesn't have to worry about errant murderers anymore at least??????? ...maybe. uhhh

Fast forward to the present (~6-8 years later) and Rueben is hardly recognizable. His hair's a mess, his eyes have lost their color, and he's... very outwardly sad. He's too tired to hide the depression anymore, completely lacking in the enthusiasm and vivacity of his younger years. Nonetheless, he stays a very compassionate person, who will (literally) put his life on the line for those who need it. Very... very much at his expense. Dolores encourages him to take better care of himself, but he still often ends up getting himself hurt. He doesn't care as much anymore... but he will care about his friends.

(Part of why he doesn't care as much about himself is because that way he can feed his hero complex and self sacrifice himself to a ridiculous degree just to help others. His life is very devoid of meaning he has to do SOMETHING, and his inability to die makes him perfect for a savior type role. someone help him)

hi rune! i come to you & your followers with top surgery (mastectomy, nipple reconstruction, no drains) in just a couple days. i have been given the general gist of what to do, what not to do, what its like. i was wondering if people just have any advice for surgery in general? or top surgery. its my first major surgery and im slightly afraid even if it is positive for me. i am really excited <3 so this doubles as good news!

hey congratulations!! and thanks for letting me know I was able to help last time!

the main thing about surgery is that it is about waking up. I usually get nervous pre-op and then wake up having enjoyed a little fucked up nap. most people having most surgeries do not wake up screaming in pain, top surgery included. I find waking up from surgery to be weird and pleasant most of the time. for me the worst parts of surgery are usually fasting and waking up early! the rest is usually way easier than I expect.

you will wake up and everyone will walk you through what to do next and give you paperwork just in case you forget. you might say some wild shit on the way out though. ask as many questions to your team as you need to before and after the surgery, it is way better than winding up injured!

for top surgery specifically, just a few ideas:

make sure everything you need is waist height, and that you have some kind of grabber claw. your arm movement will be really limited, so make your environment as 'lazy' as possible, even if it is messy by your own standards.

meal prepping ahead of time if you are alone is a good idea.

good time to invest in really good pillows or a mattress cover. you want that to be as comfortable as possible. your sleeping positions are going to be limited.

when it comes to not disturbing the incisions, safer is ALWAYS better than sorry. if you drop something on the ground that is not about to rot or explode, it is better to kick it out of the way or wait until you can grab it safely than even risk slightly over extending your arms and stretching the surgical sites.

get used to showering with your back facing the water now if you can.

a bidet might be helpful as well. try to eat in a way that helps you go to the bathroom easier and more quickly, especially for the first few days post-op. eat to shit, so to speak. opioids are prone to causing constipation! miralax is your friend.

mask whenever you go out. you do NOT want to be coughing right after surgery!

shirts that are a few sizes up are going to be good for not having your clothes rub against your incisions, especially if you can get a ton of snap clasp button down shirts.

you can get a seatbelt pillow to help make seatbelts be less painful. they strap onto the seatbelt.

pain medicine should be taken preventatively, before you are in agony. lot of people think they can 'tough it out' (which is a mindset for losers) and not take pain pills because they wake up numb and think it will not be that bad, and then they scream in pain like they are trying to win a contest rather than do anything their surgeon said to for pain management. in my experience (so this might be different in other people), the first 24 hours or so are OK. but a day or two later that numbness is going to wear off, and if you do a good job with taking your medicine, that transition (ha) out of numbness is going to be much easier! and make sure you keep up with communicating with the surgical team. if you need more pain medicine, let them know as soon as possible.

being blasted on painkillers is a great time to engage with your media backlog.

MOST IMPORTANT: practice saying "sure am glad I got that off my chest!" in front of a mirror for at least five minutes before surgery so you can nail it when you wake up

anyone else with tips or weirdly good pizza orders, throw them this way!
