one of these days i'm writing some kind of essay about lost media and humanity's need to solve loose ends. people only care about it because its lost. people only know its lost because somebody cared about it. it's such an achingly beautiful concept. it's such a horrifying fate. it's about mortality and the traitor that is memory and about love. its about the human spirit and a new kind of folklore. all forms of media preservation are a race against the deprecation and physical decomposition of their storage medium. i hope there's a heaven for art.

Guys just popping in to say that Beyblade fandom on tumblr >>>>>>>>>> beyblade fandom on twitter. The fact that in 2025 I still have to read "V-force the most hated season by all fans" and "Tyson is a jerk most of the time" takes on there actually gives me +100 damage 😭

Sometimes it's frustrating having worked in video game retail and knowing anything about game/console prices and deals watching people just. Say things online
"Look at this nintendo add for the SNES you could get the console and super mario world for like $100! Companies never do that anymore they're so greedy hahaha"
Yes, companies still bundle consoles with games. And yes, often this means the games come at a reduced price. (Mario Kart World for Switch 2 is $50 in the bundle versus the $80 for physical. When Gamestop was bundling games and controllers with new ps5s to keep away scalpers in like 2022, the games included often would be discounted between $10 and $20 for that bundle.)
Don't get me wrong. Of course less than $200 for a console and a first party game would be swell these days BUT. When you decided to get up in arms over prices these days, did you adjust for inflation? (Because like. It's one thing if the new console you're doing comparisons with the old one is much more expensive even when factoring in inflation. But also like some of those old consoles adjusted for inflation are worth about the same if not more than a switch 2, then it's like...okay? At that point the prices aren't the problem. The root issue is the companies not paying you in accordance with rising inflation.)
Believe it or not YES. Nintendo still does console deals where you can buy their most recent home console with a first party game added in for free! (Listen to me. Listen. In 2021 and 2022 for Christmas it was possible to walk into a video game store and buy a $300 switch bundle that included Mario Kart 8 deluxe and like 3 months free Nintendo Online. In like 2022/2023 for Christmas they also did $350 switch oled bundles that included Mario Kart 8 deluxe and 3 months nintendo online for free. The price of a console for a $60 video game and 3 months of the online service. This isn't some mythic business practice that stopped happening in like 2005 or something. I promise.)
Yes obviously the companies are greedy. They use deals to pull you in to get you to spend more than you expected. They also often have more sales than you're even aware of because they benefit more from people paying full price. They underpay people and they use whatever excuses needed oftentimes to raise prices to keep that profit rising. But it does no one any real good other than allow people to get pissed off to lie or assume things which aren't true. There are so many reasons to dislike companies (esp. Nintendo), you don't need to rely on acting like things used to be so much better in cases that they're not, or treating things that are industry wide standards/issues as something one company is the sole perpetrator of.
Moral of the story, maybe perhaps like do a bit a research instead of assuming whatever thing that pisses you off greatly is 100% true, and direct your ire in the right direction. Ground yourself emotionally and mentally, know what's going on. Be pissed at corporations. You're allowed to be fuckin pissed at corporations. Just please know what tf you're talking about and what exactly the root issue is
#Sorry sorry I've been putting off making a post like this#There are many rightful reasons for people to be angry about the things we've been finding out since the Switch 2 announcement#But it's so fucking frustrating. People literally have been lying online and on youtube as ragebait about shit#Everyone wants to believe in this idea that Nintendo is the worst video game company in the world and the root of all evil#So they just believe anyone who goes ''look what they took from you!!'' or claims Nintendo is charging more money than everyone else or#paving the way for new industry standards (often untrue)#And the reason I've put off talking about it is that people are so reactionary about this that their gut reaction to anyone wanting them to#have any sense of perspective or get facts right is to call those people bootlickers#I mean. Let's get a sense of perspective right now. Are consoles these days expensive? Yes. Is Switch 2 the most expensive console on the#market? Hell no. That would go to the ps5 pro. A $700 console that doesn't even include the $80 disc drive you need to buy to play physical#games on it. You're not even required to buy Nintendo online or any other add ons to play a switch 2 out of the box.#Is the switch 2 the most expensive nintendo console to date? Run the launch prices (w/dates) for previous consoles through an inflation#calculator and see for yourself. Does it suck ass that they're pushing Nintendo online for all this shit it does? YES. I have refused to bu#Nintendo online or playstation plus because I hate it so much. I was around in the years before when you could do online Switch multiplayer#without spending money. I *praised* Nintendo pre-Nintendo online for being the only company who hadn't done a stupid online subscription.#But listen to me. They were the *last* of the big 3 to do that. And comparatively‚ it also has the least confusing subscription plans while#being then more cost effective and family friendly option than the others. I hate that these exist at all‚ but Nintendo is far from the#truest worstest and only evil here.#Anyways last example. Nintendo is not even the first company out of the 3 to break $60 with a launch title. Sony was doing that with PS5#before Totk even came out and MK World was even a blip on the horizon. Obviously shit's getting expensive and that sucks. But the idea that#Nintendo is the evil trailblazing more expensive games is untrue. 90% of Switch 2 games aren't over $60. And even if $80 games DO become th#new norm‚ may I remind you that we have had a $60 standard for over a decade now. We have been lucky for this. And the issue at the end of#the day isn't the rising price of these things. Inflation has always been a thing. The real issue is that no one can afford them because#wages aren't also adjusting with inflation. If companies would pay people properly‚ then games and consoles being more expensive wouldn't b#an issue. (also sidenote. Microsoft was the first to increase console prices with tariffs. While accessories and add ons jumped with price‚#Nintendo at least didn't increase the price of the base Switch 2 console or games when they released the tariff price adjustments)#So many things are shit right now. A lot of these things shouldn't be the norm and I don't blame anyone for hating those things. I also#don't like Nintendo as a company. But again. Do some research. Ground yourself. Get some perspective. Stop believing people who are doing#the equivalent of claiming cds and dvds are already dead and you can't buy them anymore#zessay

Epona's Resolve
Before the events of Twilight Princess, a young, still inexperienced Link grapples with a challenge closer to home: taming his spirited new horse, Epona. Despite his best efforts, the young pony refuses to cooperate.. It's only when Epona, in her own mischievous way, forces Link to learn a crucial lesson about patience, trust, and connection—a bond that will prove vital in the trials to come.
- - -
"Alright Epona", said Link cheerfully. "Today, I'm going to ride you."
Epona snorted. Link sighed.
It had only been recently, after passing into his 10th year, when he had first acquired the young pony. Link had come across her while foraging for berries (under request from Rusl), when he heard a high whine from off the trail. He was more than surprised and saddened to find a dishevelled chestnut filly ensnared in a hunter's trap. Link had freed her with no hesitation. After managing to lure her to a safer spot thanks to some fresh Ordon carrots, Rusl had suggested that Link nurse her back to health, but then would have to set her free.
"She's definitely wild", Rusl had said. "I expect she got left behind by her herd. They'll have moved on by now. But she doesn't belong here. Look, she won't accept it."
He gestured at the little filly, who had been chewing at the knot of rope Link had secured around her neck.
"I'll be kind to her", Link had promised. "I'm sure she'll warm up to us. I just want her to get better."
And that she did. Link had fed her and changed the dressings on her wounds every few hours a day, often sitting with her as close as possible to give her some company (as Link had claimed).
Eventually, the young pony was healed, but she didn't go away, even though the young pony still kept her distance.
"I think she wants to stay", Link had declared. "That means I can keep her, right?"
Rusl frowned and scratched his chin.
"She is your responsibility", he agreed. But you must give her more time. If she truly wants to go, then let her."
"I'll give her a name", Link smiled. "I'll call her...Epona."
It was the first name that had popped in Link's head at the time. And yet somehow, he knew it was right from the moment he said it.
Now Link sighed heavily again. Despite everything, Epona was refusing to co-operate with him.
And that was what confused him. He had given her chances, had even taken her off the rope that had been attached to the post outside his home to see if she would wander away. Epona had wandered a bit, choosing to go a little way past the spring, but never further. She had grazed and sat under the smaller trees outside Link's home, but always with her eyes on the young boy. Her posture was always rigid and her ears back. She snorted and danced away from anyone in the village who went near her, even Link - although the boy did try.
Rusl had only said to give her time. But how long would that be? How many days would Epona be so stubborn? That was what Link wanted to know.
And here he was now, with a blanket over one arm and a bridle in his hand, approaching the young pony cautiously.
"It's alright girl", Link said gently. "I just need to put these on you, and you'll be ready!"
Epona snorted and stamped her foot.
"Here!", Link reached into his back pocket. "I got some carrots for you!"
Epona tossed her head. Snorting again, but this time in an unusual way.
Is she laughing at me?!, thought Link.
He dropped his hand with the carrot to his side, exasperated.
"What is it that you want?"
He knew this was foolish. As if Epona was going to open her mouth and start telling him what she wanted. She was just being self-willed.
"Just like someone I know", Rusl had told him with a wink.
Link was getting frustrated.
"You'll do as I say!", he snapped.
He grabbed the rope hanging from the post outside his home, and then, with quick succession, lassoed it around Epona's neck.
Epona reared up, clearly taken aback by this action.
Link held the rope firm.
"It's ok! Just calm down and we'll -"
He was cut off as Epona reared again and and charged at him. But Link was ready. He danced to the side, letting the rope slack so as to give him space.
"There!", Link said proudly, "You're not getting out of it that easily!"
Epona whinnied again and charged once more around Link's other side. Again, Link danced around her, waiting for the young pony to do a full circle before returning to her previous stance.
"Come on!", the young boy scowled. "What are you playing at?!"
He then noticed a weight around his leg. Link looked down, and saw that the lose part of the rope had become entangled around it as he was avoiding Epona.
"Alright, very funny", Link said, half amused.
And then all of a sudden, the ground disappeared from underneath him.
Link was knocked with all the force out of him, and it only took a moment to realise that he was lying on his back, staring at the vast forest canopy above him.
And then, only a second after before Link could get his bearings, he was being dragged across the ground, Epona going into a full gallop at high speed.
"Stop! Epona!", Link cried.
Link made a grab for the rope, but it had become so far out of his reach that his hands flailed in despair.
"Please just stop!", Link cried again. He was cut off mid-shout from dirt and grass getting kicked up and landing in mouth.
Epona swiftly turned to where she had never gone before, to the entrance of Ordon Village. As Link screamed helplessly, the young pony galloped past the village shop and the houses, and then headed along the dirt path that was painful on Link's back.
"Rusl! Uli!", Link yelled for his surrogate guardians. He flipped himself over, desperately clawing at the ground for any root or rock to grab onto. But his hands slipped uselessly through rotting leaves and mud.
Hearing Link's cries, Rusl burst out from his front door, with Uli holding their newborn baby, Colin, close behind.
"Link?!", Rusl cried in disbelief. He stood there for a moment, stunned, as he took in the absurd scene of Link, battered and frightened, being dragged behind the young chestnut filly.
"Hang on!", Rusl yelled.
The Mayor, Bo, and his young daughter, Ilia, had also come out to see the commotion.
"What in the -", Bo stammered, as he took in the sight for himself.
Ilia gasped as she could only stare at Link in peril.
By now all the villagers had come out to stare at this spectacle. Link barely noticed them. Just as he was beginning to think Epona wouldn't stop, she slowed down at the worn jetty on the edge of the lake, and reared on her hind legs.
Then, in a tremendous display of strength, she spun her whole body, causing Link to be flung out towards the water. The rope unravelled, and Link plunged into the icy lake.
"Link!!", Rusl shrieked in horror, as he ran up to the water's edge.
Only moments after, Link surfaced, coughing and spluttering.
He glared at Epona from across the water. She tossed her head and whinnied a neigh that sounded like laughter.
Link stared at her. And then, he did something he did not expect to do in this situation. He started laughing too.
Rusl looked at him, bemused. The other villagers looked concerned.
"All this time," Link said, when he composed himself enough. "You just wanted to play!"
Epona seemed to answer with another toss of her head.
"Here, Link!", his friend Fado called out, reaching out a hand, "I got you!"
Link swam over, and in seconds he was hurled out of the water. He sat there on the jetty, dazed and still slightly coughing.
"Are you alright, Link?!", Rusl asked.
Link could only nod as Ilia hovered nearby while Fado was trying to rein in Epona.
"Oh my goodness!", Uli gasped as she finally reached the jetty. She passed Colin over to Rusl and knelt down beside the young boy.
"Oh Link! Are you hurt?!", Uli asked frantically, as she cupped his face and looked him all over.
"I'm alright Uli", said Link, his reply getting cut off by a short cough.
"I told you he was too young!", Uli flared at Rusl. "Now look at what's happened!"
"It's not Rusl's fault, Uli!", said Link. "It was mine. Epona was -"
"Epona?", Uli cut in. She frowned. "Where is that horse?"
All present turned to look at Fado, who was still trying to wrangle Epona to his side. The young man was not having much luck. Epona was playing nearly the same game, tossing her head and dancing around Fado when he tried to get close.
Link went to stand.
"No, Link, stay down", said Rusl firmly. "You've had quite a shock."
"I'm fine", Link rebutted. He shook his head a little to clear the slight fog before standing up.
Then he turned and offered out his hand.
"Epona", he called softly.
The little filly stopped prancing around Fado and stood straight, ears pricked up. Her nostrils caught the lake water scent of the young boy.
And then she slowly trotted over, and pressed her nose against his hand.
Link could barely take a breath. And then Epona was nuzzling and licking at his knuckles. The others gasped.
"Link!", Ilia exclaimed. "I think she likes you now!"
"I think she does", Rusl agreed, unable to keep the grin from his face.
"But...how?", asked Fado.
Link raised his other hand, and very slowly and carefully cupped Epona's cheek. She leaned into the touch, snorting faintly.
"You just wanted me to play, instead of trying to train all the time", explained Link, holding the young pony's face very gently.
Epona stared up at him, her eyes warm and soft.
"I promise", said Link. "We'll play all the time if you like. We can even herd the goats together!"
"Not until you have learnt to properly ride her first!", Rusl said quickly.
The others laughed at this. Link didn't join in. He was too busy smiling back into the eyes of his newest friend.
- - -
Some time after, Link was putting away Epona's riding gear, when Rusl walked up.
"Well Link", the smithy said with a warm smile. "You and Epona have been making fine progress!"
"Yes, she has", said Link smiling back. "She's getting more used to the saddle now."
"So she has", replied Rusl. "I've also seen you and Fado attempting to use her with the goats."
"She's a bit scared of them, I think", said Link. "Or maybe she just thinks they're boring."
"Maybe", said Rusl nodding.
There was a small silence after that. The day was already giving way to the dusk of twilight.
"Oh, there's something else!", said Link excitedly.
He reached down and plucked up a strip of grass, put it between his fingers and up to lips, and blew a short tune.
The sound echoed in the quiet of the forest. Then it was broken by a joyous neigh, and Epona came barrelling round the corner.
Link greeted her with open arms and the young pony nuzzled her cheek against his.
"She likes this song I made for her", explained Link. "She gets so happy when she hears it."
"It seems you two are really beginning to understand each other", said Rusl, coming over to stroke her.
Epona glanced up at him, but then all too quickly lost interest and her eyes darted back to Link.
"She's starting to like this village too", said Link quietly.
He patted her cheek and stepped away, returning to the abandoned riding gear.
Epona was clearly not having it, and nipped playfully at the back of his shirt. Link laughed and pretended to swat her.
"Do you know what I think, Link?", said Rusl, leaning against the house post.
Link turned to him, puzzled.
"I think you two were meant to find each other, because you both have similar beginnings", said Rusl softly.
Link turned away, but he knew that he was right. Two young souls. Abandoned in the forest. No known past to speak of...
"But you found a family here", continued Rusl. "In this village, and in each other."
Link smiled at that.
Home was here. And here was family.
This is an idea I have had for ages. I love the bond between Link and Epona, and especially the one in Twilight Princess. Whilst not stated in game, it seems pretty obvious that the two have been together for a long time. One of my favourite Twilight Princess fanfics briefly mentions their past, and I always thought "But what did happen in those years?".
So here is a quick fic of one instance in their past that could have happened. Hope you all like 🙂
