He hadn't promised Yingxing back then, too afraid of the years stretching out before him. Could he promise Feixiao now, and belatedly promise Yingxing in turn? Would he?

"Hm."

He takes a sip, rolling the tea over his tongue carefully before answering. It'd steeped too long, and is much too bitter. The flavor coats the inside of his mouth even after he swallows. "I've lived many years, Feixiao, and sat on this throne consecutively for longer than anyone has a right to," he says softly. "I have enemies within and without the Alliance, as you very well know. I'm afraid my reputation as a 'good man' extends only as far as the Luofu herself, with a few exceptions. Whether I remain a good man to you and to history, I imagine, will largely depend on how I die." Legacy, again. That accursed thing, tainting the memories of men. He's long since lost his love with it, seen it dash his loved ones across the rocks like rotten fruit. He doesn't expect Feixiao to sympathize, but one look into her eyes tells him she understands his implications. Whether he succumbs to mara or to the battlefield is anyone's guess.

He nods, finishing off his tea. It's really, terribly bitter. "I can't promise you that." A devastating hand, Jingliu's voice echoes in his mind. "I've never acted on what I believed was good; only what I thought was right for the Luofu and the people under my care. If you believe that to be good -- if you believe those actions constitute me as a good man -- then I can promise you I will continue to make the decisions I believe will benefit the Luofu, and the Alliance as a whole." Jing Yuan bows his head to the other Arbiter-General, eyes lowered to his hands folded neatly in front of him.

"But I can only promise you that," he murmurs, "and not whether you, or anyone else, will continue to agree with my methods. I hope you understand, Merlin's Claw."

okay, so casper and nova, right? the casper and nova game is one big metaphor for simon and betty’s relationship. and the last thing we see in it is: nova tries to sacrifice herself so casper can get what he wants, and the choices are to either go with that, or nova lives but casper forgets her. and it’s obviously meant to parallel simon and betty’s situation in come along with me after they get swallowed by golb: either betty can sacrifice herself to keep simon safe, or she doesn’t but he goes back to being ice king. (um, that is, assuming that she was correct to think they might revert to the forms they had before getting digested after exiting golb. which is not something we have any actual evidence for. it was just a possibility that occurred to her and a risk she wasn’t willing to take.)

UM. EVERY PART OF THAT WAS BECAUSE OF DECISIONS BETTY MADE INDEPENDENTLY?

betty decides to jump through the portal when simon is trying to say goodbye to her, betty decides to fix the crown and then try to find a way to cure him even after he’s told her he’d rather die than be ice king again, betty decides to fucking summon golb, betty decides to push simon out of golb before he can react at all just in case the crown goes back to its former state once it leaves and just in case there’s no way to get rid of golb without its wish magic.

She nodded solemnly, as if talking to someone who absolutely towered over her like this was an everyday occurrence. Honestly, considering Gantu, it almost might as well have been. The surprise, if Lilo was surprised at all, was that this particular giant was generally human-looking aside from size, unlike the obviously alien captain.

But for a girl who fully believed in vampires and undead mummies? Well, she wasn't one to judge.

"Yeah, Sparky doesn't come down from the lighthouse that often. He must think you're really something special."

She watched the electrical experiment zip lightly around her new companion, not touching him but buzzing close enough to see that he was clearly fascinated. A smile was on the girl's face. As official caretaker of all Stitch's cousins, it always warmed her heart to see others accept them as readily as she herself did - and that didn't change no matter who the person in question was.

"So, where are you from?" she tried nonchalantly, as if she asked that question of giants absolutely all the time.

… Gonna tag this as the show, just my personal show tag, bc (apparently???) it's a wide spread take and I'm in no mood to be kicking any hornet nests, and it's probably based on personal experiences, but…

This 'Neal isn't Peter and El's son he's June's' take? Just completely bewilders me.

Now, as mentioned, I assume this is based on personal experiences, bc for me, June in no way acts as a mother to Neal. To me, he is one billion percent Peter and El's adopted son—they love and support him and think he's brilliant and are proud of him, but also try to challenge him and want better for him. They have expectations and all the complications and love that come w/ them. They try to help guide him and teach him things.

But June? June is Wine Grandma. And it is Wine Grandma's gods given right to spoil her grandchild as much as she damn well pleases. I never see a mother in June, at least, not what I consider a mother figure to be. She doesn't try to teach or raise or guide Neal. That's not that she never gives advice, grandma's give plenty of advice, but she's not trying to help him Be Better, that's not grandma's job. June is the Wine Grandma that will sit and play games w/ your friends, she's smart as a whip and quick as one, too. She's wealthy and cultured and she dotes on her darling boy however she wants and the parents can't stop her. Wine Grandma gives hundred dollar bills as pocket money, lets her grandchild eat and wear whatever they want. No expectations.

And both those familial aspects are just as important. This is not to in anyway diminish June and Neal's relationship, bc it's still familial to me and it's still a part of what shapes him. He loves her and looks after her and he reminds her of Byron (I've seen that cited as why she's a mom and I just… Again, for me, that whole thing was framed in a much more 'grandparent' fashion, like when something skips a generation). She pulls out pictures and tells stories of a time long gone and he listens and is interested. At most, she's Wine Aunt, but I prefer Wine Grandma (and he's the only grandchild).

That, to me, is the beauty of WC, is that they form this whole family network. Neal lost his parents at a young age and there's no mention of grandparents, or aunts and uncles beyond Ellen. But now he has something like that, he has a network, he has multiple people who love him just as much in different ways and fulfil different, equally important roles. And that's why it's such an interesting study.

Dark clouds filled the sky, accompanied by a near-constant rumbling. It was only the occasional flash of lightning that illuminated the area, silhouetting the shadowy Swordsman where they hovered. One would think they were in their element. Such an assumption wouldn't be too far off from the truth, if it weren't for the blasted downpour.

The Dark Matter currently took shelter underneath a sturdy tree, observing the rain with a baleful gaze. Their hair, normally spiky and flowing (whether wind was present or not), appeared as though it were melting. Small black blobs dripped down from it at a rather consistent rate, hitting the ground before seemingly fading from existence. Swordsman's cloak, meanwhile, was completely drenched from the rain.

Waterlogged would be an appropriate way of describing the warrior right now. Admittedly, Swordsman had been caught off-guard earlier. All they had intended was for a short nap... Suddenly being battered by rain was certainly a discomforting awakening.

Could they simply leave this planet right now? Yes. Did they want to fly through the clouds, where the weather was most certainly worse? Not particularly. So there the Dark Matter would remain, waiting out the storm as it raged on...

Releases his anxiety by extension his touch to her shoulder. Looking forward, all he saw was a memory strangled by the weight of life changing ultimatums. Are you free, V? No one chooses to be like this. While not the better choice if he could ( he could never decide what's best for him if without her and the others ), he couldn't allow this to be a one drone task. Reaching out to V would never be a mistake.

((Yeah, I could see that! Headcanon accepted. Their mindset is along the lines of: they know that Giving Gifts is a Good Thing that People Like. But they don't know what actually constitutes a good gift. They know that many people like receiving flowers and that Ze'mer's flowers are especially precious, but they don't know why that is. They also know that most bugs like Geo, which are basically shiny fossils and rocks. So maybe this other rock is also a Good Gift? Here you go, Friend!))

((I think that'd fit them really well actually, yeah! Not a verbal question, of course, but just a silent wondering! But over time they eventually come to understand or at least accept that That's How Things Work.))

in my hc the noble houses of menzoberranzan operate similarly to the houses in ice and fire where they’re constantly feuding with each other but instead of trying to take the throne/control of the whole realm they’re all fighting for lolth’s favour instead. and because they can’t outright declare war on each other (forgot the reason for why they can’t exactly do that but iirc lolth doesn’t like it?? she loves the drama I guess) and if they rise too quickly lolth casts them down so they have to be cunning about it. not to mention if they stay too long in power and do nothing about it that also displeases the spider queen so the nobility’s game of intrigue is constantly moving and working both for self gain and for self preservation.

shri’iia also plays the game but more of a pawn than a player. she’s not born from any noble house (she’s actually a commoner). the only reason why she has any foot in the game is that she’s taken in by the matriarch of faen tlabbar - one of the houses who fervently worships lolth to the point of zealotry - when they’ve heard word that she—a commoner—have managed to succeed lolth’s trials and gained her blessing. lolth blessings are rare to come and making someone a paladin is even more rare so for a zealot house, that’s a a sign they can’t pass up. so, the house matriarch takes her in and keeps in a tower where she’s supposed to pray and train to lolth day and night. the paladin oath that shri’iia swears is both for lolth and her matriarch; she swears to punish the enemies of her mistresses and forever keep her loyalty to them. her matriarch’s word is an extension to lolth’s will, so to disobey her will be disobeying lolth herself.

and ofc shri’iia being born poor with everything to give and nothing to lose, who thought that there is more to her life than a merchant’s daughter, to be known by the goddess she worship and noticed by one of the most influential houses in the city, swears herself to that oath. she never regretted that choice not even when she’s kept in that tower in complete isolation with her matriarch being the only person she could interact with.
