Profile: The Rite of Stars

The Rite of Stars (or the Festival of Stars, the Festival of Lights, or simply the Lights) is an Asteri winter festival where all four realms illuminate the dark months with string lights, candles and lanterns to bring the revered starlight of the night sky to their home on the ground. While the Asteri realms' years are enigmatically synchronised with each other, the festivities were developed independently by the isolated human cultures prior to the Awakening. Each has additional, complex observances to the Rite, but lighting candles in public spaces after dark is universal.

In the Lucid Weave, it becomes customary in winter to carry a lantern of loomstone, a chrysolite-like crystal that glows the same bright yellow as the Skyloom's radiance that replaces sunlight in the realm. Some of this radiance accumulates as loomstone deposits on the edges of the islands during its transit through the star-ocean, and it is perilously mined for use in the Rite and other cultural practices. The lightweight material is encased in a lantern (or simply threaded with a handle, for the budget-conscious Lucida) and worn, carried, or displayed on homes after loomdusk as a corporeal homage of the Starweaver's powers of creation. At the conclusion of winter, the gradually dimming loomstones are symbolically thrown back into the star-seas (or the River of Lights, for many within the Mirror Capital), where they quickly dissolve and resume their circuit as part of the grand architecture of the celestial superstructure.

Perhaps the most unusual celebration of the Rite is in the Flooding Sands, where it is regimented around the Eclipse Months. During the winter of the Sands' 'planet', which is a moon of a low-density gas giant, its path through the sky begins regularly overlapping with the sun's, creating regular midday eclipses of up to an hour's totality near the solstice. To combat this darkness, the entirety of the Floodlands is lavishly decked in warm, phosphoric alchemical string lights, turning both the long nights and dark intervals into a cozy luminescence. The eclipses are a Pandora-sanctified rest period, a sort of anti-siesta, where Floodlanders often retreat into homes or restaurants to eat, nap, or keep warm during the temperature drop. The Rite of Stars lasts through the Eclipse Months and the following Feast of the Night Monsoon.

The Commune of Whispers makes no official observance of the Rite of Stars, due to their abject terror towards provoking the inscrutible forces of the Void Diffuse. But this is a far cry from practices in the outland city of Journey, where it is a grand fiesta of defiant vibrance. Despite having no conventional year cycle (or sun), when 'winter' arrives as tracked by chronometers, the sections of the Void's pale grey sand surrounding Journey are brushed with elaborate patterns of glowing, technicolour paint and pigment. The luminous collective mural spreads outwards from the city borders and in sporadic pockets beyond, as though to challenge the forces of the Void against irrepressible human spirit. Its strange machinations oblige; within a few days of each mural's painting, they have faded and vanished, only to be repainted in short order. The Rite lasts as long as the Journeyers can be bothered to repeatedly laugh in the Mourning Ones' faces. Mural patches sometimes crop up in the Commune, and are rarely reported by outlands scouts, though they quickly vanish - one by the irate hands of man, and the other by parties unknown.

During the harsh, smoke-dimmed winters of the Ash Wastes, the Ashen have repurposed the Rite of Stars as a sombre display of hope. Even without human intervention, the normally dark and blackened Wastes are brightened in winter by a layer of ice and snow, though it appears a gloomy grey in the low light. Throughout all the principal cities and settlements, commonly-treaded regions of the Outer Wastes, and even a few encampments in the Ring of Fire, immense light rigs and floodlights are erected, pointed at the ground to illuminate as much snow as possible for as long as it lies. Its high reflectance, and the rare unification of the warring factions in the floodlights' placement, means the whole of the populated Ash Wastes seems to glow a bright white against the ravaged world beyond, as a symbol of life and endurance; that human civilisation in the Wastes marches on, and always shall. The floodlights are expensive to power, but the Ashen place great value on morale as they rage against the bleakness of the world.

All attempts to bring Christmas to the Asterism have failed. They just love their lights over there.

Finrod laughed and lay back in the grass. “Ela!” he breathed as he looked up at the night sky and beckoned for Balan to join him. “Do you see him there?” he drew a pattern in the stars above them as Balan moved to lie beside him. “Menelmacar, the Swordsman of the Sky.”

“No, where are you pointing?”

“There.” He shifted so his line of sight was closer to Balan’s. “There are three stars a hand’s width over the tree-line, brighter than their sisters about them. Do you see?”

“I believe so.” Balan tried to focus as his mind still worked to grasp what he had experienced.

“Those are his belt. Now follow the furthest upwards and you’ll find his blade raised in charge.”

“Yes, I see it.”

“Then cross here and the curve of his shield wards the skies.”

“Mendelcar?”

“Menelmacar,” he corrected, “heaven’s warrior.” The finger moved further along the sky, itself luminous where it caught the moonlight, and Balan felt again the unsettling presence of a second thought within his own as the image of a dim huddle of stars rose ahead of the finger’s path to illumine what Finrod outlined. “This is Itseloktë.”

“Itselot—Itseloktë.” He turned the word over on his tongue and added it to the list of recitations. “Itseloktë. What does it mean?”

“It…how would you say it in your tongue…insects, perhaps? Gnats? Nay, flies would be nearer, I deem. The fly cluster.” He glanced over at Balan with a grin as the adan snorted despite himself. “Our Sindarin kin name it better. Remmirath they call it, the Netted Stars: a mesh of those jewels that alone are fit to crown the head of Tintallë.”

Balan recalled waking beside the embers and seeing the visions flowing out from Nóm’s song: among them was a woman measurelessly tall, strong beyond reckoning, wrapped in a mantle of twilit blue that reached beyond the horizon, that was the horizon. Light spilled out from her and he closed his eyes against the brilliance of the memory.

“Varda Elentári, our Lady of Light, who wove the stars into their celestial dance and set their steps in a sign of doom. Anarríma, Soronúmë, Telumendil, Wilwarin…”

“Butterfly.” Balan reflexively named the translation under his breath and Finrod laughed.

“Yes, the evening’s butterfly.” He pointed to a distant stretch of sky. “There he flits above the mountains: a wing here, another just there.”

“I see it.” Balan raised his hand toward the patterned stars and his finger rested lightly against the other’s. He lingered as long as he dared, then shifted their hands together toward the north. “And what of this one?” he asked as he dropped his arm back onto the grass. “Have you a name for it?”

“We do.”

“I’ve been drawn to it as long as I can remember, ever since I was a boy,” Balan continued as the other did not elaborate. “Some nights when I can’t sleep I’ll sit outside and follow it through the sky. It steadies me, I know not how.”

“It is the Valacirca,” Finrod said after a long silence, his voice quiet, “the Sickle of the Valar. It was set there in the heavens ere your people or mine awakened, as a sign of that truth which we hold in estel: it is Light that shall endure, not Darkness.” He turned his face toward the other and studied Balan’s profile outlined against the tangle of stars. “And I confess, my friend, it gladdens my heart to find this is shared between us as well: many of those nights when you watched its path, we would have kept vigil together. Ever have I looked to those same stars in times of despair to recall that all works of the Dark are for naught. That they will, as was said at the first Music, be but an instrument of things yet more wonderful than those it sought to destroy.”

“And that comforts you?”

“It does—to know we are creatures of the One who is Goodness, and from whose works must ultimately come joy, if not happiness. Lost on the ice before the sun’s first rising, when I came nearest to forsaking hope, even then I looked up through the bitter cold and behold! I saw the Seven Stars rise triumphant in the north, crowning the work of Eru to which Morgoth Bauglir shall never lay full claim, and over which he shall never triumph. In that hour I knew, as I answer you now,” he returned his finger briefly to Balan’s forehead in reminder of the question he addressed, “we are not abandoned.”

The Grand Design grinds on, and time grinds with it. The experiment of the Sun-Divers having been only partially successful, the Sky casts about for another instrument; he finds it in himself. From uncreated light, he creates it: forms dart like sparks, existence billowing from essence.

Velarië’s creations were forged from the light of stars cast upon water, but these spirits are cut from the sun itself, its plasm-essence thrust into the midst of creation. Their souls are unendurable.

These are the False-Lights (or False-Fires), fugitives from the sun in the waters and the air: omens, messengers, servants, and betrayers of the Sky.

Some dive the oceans; the seas hiss boiling complaints, but cannot wholly quench them. The falling stars pierce the freezing depths far deeper than the rays of the sun. Some keep the faith and bear the light in the waters; some, safely out of sight, build their own world-kingdoms, for they who brand themselves onto reality cast life like shadows.

Here are the Aphotics--shapes of men and fish and spider-crabs, joined in a million unique forms for the strange purposes of luminous masters. Here, they breed strains of drone-larvae to serve as bioluminescent lamps; here, they breed tortured leviathans to ruminate the seabed ore into incalculable wealth; here, priests with human faces and a thousand fins interpret the instructions of fallen angels.

Here are the kingdoms of the sea-mounts and cold seeps, the bright-eyed riders of the seagrass steppes, the dwellings carved from continental cliffs illumed by the light of traitor suns.

Here is the light-deeper-than-light, the song ringing from yawning depths where the Music of the Spheres cannot reach, the empires teeming in the billowing gulfs of night. Here, below the tides, in trenches that would swallow nations, lie a million slowly blinking eyes.

Here are prophets in the boiling vents and gardeners in seabeds of fertile corpse-flesh. Here, they keep the shipwrecks and the whale-falls and all which glimmers eternal out of the sight and reach of those who dwell in air.

Here, the stars are armoured in pearl and crowned in coral and cruel as death by drowning. Here, they are encrusted with lies and tube-worms. Here, they wait, scheming.

But the Sky may still command them, erratically, for even the smallest atom of the Sun’s essence contains an indelible Purpose, and the politics and covenants of immortals are luminous and strange, and the Grand Design contains many apparent contradictions which resolve themselves only from a Grand Perspective.

And not all the False-Lights chose the seas; some chose air, dancing around masts and mountain-tops, cooled by the winds, mitigating the True Light by maintaining only a flickering and contingent existence—and these are still quite loyal to the Lord of Vision; and some in the depths were eaten, for there are things in the deep to swallow any natural or unnatural thing; and some bore the light to the underworld; and at least one bathed itself in the River of Salvation; and many chose the endless ice that encloses and dissolves all things.

Webb captures a prominent protostar in Perseus

This new Picture of the Month from the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope reveals intricate details of the Herbig Haro object 797 (HH 797). Herbig-Haro objects are luminous regions surrounding newborn stars (known as protostars), and are formed when stellar winds or jets of gas spewing from these newborn stars form shockwaves colliding with nearby gas and dust at high speeds.

HH 797, which dominates the lower half of this image, is located close to the young open star cluster IC 348, which is located near the eastern edge of the Perseus dark cloud complex. The bright infrared objects in the upper portion of the image are thought to host two further protostars.

This image was captured with Webb's Near-InfraRed Camera (NIRCam). Infrared imaging is powerful in studying newborn stars and their outflows, because the youngest stars are invariably still embedded within the gas and dust from which they are formed. The infrared emission of the star's outflows penetrates the obscuring gas and dust, making Herbig-Haro objects ideal for observation with Webb's sensitive infrared instruments.

Molecules excited by the turbulent conditions, including molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide, emit infrared light that Webb can collect to visualize the structure of the outflows. NIRCam is particularly good at observing the hot (thousands of degrees Celsius) molecules that are excited as a result of shocks.

Using ground-based observations, researchers have previously found that for the cold molecular gas associated with HH 797, most of the red-shifted gas (moving away from us) is found to the south (bottom right), while the blue-shifted gas (moving towards us) is to the north (bottom left). A gradient was also found across the outflow, such that at a given distance from the young central star, the velocity of the gas near the eastern edge of the jet is more red-shifted than that of the gas on the western edge.

Astronomers in the past thought this was due to the outflow's rotation. In this higher-resolution Webb image, however, we can see that what was thought to be one outflow is in fact made up of two almost parallel outflows with their own separate series of shocks (which explains the velocity asymmetries). The source, located in the small dark region (bottom right of center), and already known from previous observations, is therefore not a single but a double star. Each star is producing its own dramatic outflow. Other outflows are also seen in this image, including one from the protostar in the top right of center along with its illuminated cavity walls.

HH 797 resides directly north of HH 211 (separated by approximately 30 arcseconds), which was the feature of a Webb image release in September 2023.

a/n: i chose quite literally the worst weeks to do this event i didn’t expect to be so busy irl oml, it’s fine it’s all good enjoy childe! this is one of my worst works fr i’m so sorry

“Hush! Somebody’s going to hear you. Step lightly. Where are you taking me anyways?”

“Will you loosen up? Nobody’s gonna catch us, chillax.”

You shivered from the chilly night air. The only source of warmth near was the hand that gripped tightly into your wrist as its owner pulled you through the dark corridor. He led you out of the door that lead to the gardens, making his way through the twists and turns of the hedge maze.

Finally, he came to a stop in front of a large fountain. Lanterns lit up the area, illuminating the picnic he had set up along with your captor’s face in a warm light that contrasted against the moon’s white rays.

“Childe...”

“Cool, right? While Zhongli was flaunting his empty wallet around the market with you today, I spent my time in the kitchen with your cooks. They helped me prepare a big basket of all the things you like!”

You smiled at the redhead. “That’s... really sweet of you. Pretty original, too.”

“Heh, yeah.” He scratched the back of his head, “I got the idea when you didn’t come down for breakfast. Your dad was pretty angry, y’know. Made for a real awkward meal.”

Scoffing and rolling your eyes, you made your way to the picnic blanket in front of you. Childe followed. “Don’t even get me started on him.”

Childe began unpacking the large picnic basket. With every food item he pulled out, the further down your jaw dropped. Your chefs really had told him everything you enjoyed. Your mouth watered at the sight. Then, he pulled a bottle out of a tin bucket of ice, pouring it into his glass and motioning an offer to you. You raised your hand slightly.

“No thank you. Father says it’s ‘unbecoming’ of a princess to drink alcohol.”

Childe rolled his eyes and poured your drink anyways. “Tonight you’re not a princess. You’re just Y/N, and I’m just Childe. And we’re just having a nice little picnic”

“Well, if you put it that way...” You giggled and picked up the glass, taking a small sip of the chilled champagne. It wasn’t the best flavor ever, but it certainly added to the romantic aspect of the picnic.

You spent the night simply laughing and joking with Childe and for the first time, you were able to forget the looming responsibilities of being the heir to an entire kingdom. He distracted you so much that you didn’t even hear the large clock tower chime, signaling 10pm, 11, 12, 1...

“By the way you talk about Zhongli, it seems as though you know him pretty well. Are you friends?”

You were bubblier than the champagne at half-past 1am, listening to Childe tell story after story and chiming in with your own little adventures. Childe was similar, but definitely a little less hyper.

“I do know him, yes.” The prince fiddled with the gloves on his hands, “I wouldn’t say we’re friends though. Barely even acquaintances.”

“Really now?” You cocked your head to the side, “And why is that?”

“Uh- we just, we’ve just got different things going on. Different ideals and morals and whatnot. He’s a cool man, but definitely not in my life for the long run I suppose.”

“Morals as in...?”

“...You were rather snappy when I mentioned your dad earlier in the night. Why’s that?”

He was avoiding the question. Not a good thing to do when you’re talking to the princess you’re trying to marry. But, maybe he’s just a more closed off person. You had only known him for a day, after all.

“He’s just demanding and strict. I never got the childhood all the other kids in the kingdom got. I spent every day studying and learning what to do as a princess, and now it feels like he’s just selling me off to some random guy who doesn’t even care about me. But at this point, I’d be fine with it. Anything to get me out of this castle and living a more interesting life.”

You didn’t necessarily want to badmouth your father, but Childe was the first person to ever ask about it. You’d spent so long keeping it all bottled up that it finally spilled over.

The prince nodded. “I understand that. Once you become queen, it’s gonna get harder. Even if you don’t necessarily want a husband, I think it would be good to have someone to just be there to support and help you. Ruling a kingdom isn’t easy.”

“Yeah,” You laid down on your bacm looked up at the stars. Childe laid next to you. “I’d like to be fall for the person I’m going to marry naturally. This arranged thing isn’t really my style. I want to be friends with them, and then court, and then marry.”

Childe stayed quiet for a moment. You were still looking up at the stars, not noticing when he turned his head to gaze at you.

He thought about himself. His future, his past. Would you accept him if you knew the truth? That his kingdom was a bit more... vicious than what you were used to? He would push for the joining of your two kingdoms, would you be supportive of that?

His hand reached out, gently resting his pinky finger on top of yours. You glanced at him, but didn’t move.

“I don’t know what the future holds. My life is a lot different from yours. But I do know that if you were to marry me, I’d vow to always support you. To be your friend. Not even lovers if you weren’t okay with it. We’d work through it all.”

You smiled at him. “Thank you, Childe.”

🕊He guides you away from home and instead to take a trip to the human world, Decides to take you on a picnic in a field filled with daisys (innocence & purity).

🕊Enjoying the calmness of the picnic, he teaches you about magic and how he learned it though he never specifys how old he truly is he has many tales to tell.

The sun shone brightly, a clear sky above as there was only a simple breeze accompanying the both of you. This was a huge undertaking of an ask. You have no idea.

Actually, I'm about to give you an idea.

This is now the first official map of the Alliair Region, and it is all thanks to this askblog! A lot of the towns on this map were invented because of user questions like yours, and it made this process possible. Using the free version of Inkarnate, a few name generators, and 12 hours of real time, I can now give you a rundown of some points of interest of the places (that I currently know of) in the region of The Stars Shine Bright. This map is entirely made without considering, in depth, any highway systems or any other methods of travel. For more information on towns where gyms reside, visit this post.

First thing's first as a point of interest and general disclaimer. This zoomed in area of the map is where the entirety of the main comic takes place, and everything else is, well, more or less set dressing. Still, surprises are still possible.

Callaiaster Town

This is where the main group of protagonists and supporting characters currently live. Callaiaster is a small town, but a pitstop for travelers on foot, mostly pokemon. It is built through a small valley and makes a cozy, tight-knit community who can keep up on current events through the daily word-of-mouth from passersthrough.

Traveler's Pass

This cave pass, illuminated by magic crystals, leads directly out of Callaiaster. Shown in Chapters 2 and 4. Opal made her escape through this cave and was unsuccessfully pursued by Caroline. This is the same path Matt took to run his errand to Cascadia City.

Mirror Forest

Considered a minor dungeon, and also called a magical environment. The layouts of minor dungeons do not change, but their dense magic lends to effects unique to their environment. Highly reflective crystals form in Mirror Forest... so reflective, even, that one may be able to gain inner truth...

Wandering Woods

A large expanse of forest. Myu was born here. The extra story, All Roads Lead to Home takes place here.

Dynamene City

This is where the other main group of protagonists and supporting characters are located. Atticus was born here in the Dynamene City Research Facility. It is a bustling metropolitan city where the capable and the business-savvy go to their 9-to-5 and live fast-paced lives. The extra stories, Cats On A Hot Tin Roof, and Steven, Roxanne, & the Baby Blues take place here. The water-type gym is located here.

Amphic City

The most prestigious bar in Alliair, doubling as the poison-type gym, is located here.

Frostridge Town

A snowy resort town. Derek Pole lives here in the summer months. The ice-type gym is located here.

Rockchester

A small, secluded town near a cave system. Opal was born here in a litter of three to a liepard mother and gigalith father. The TSSB Bit: True Love takes place in or around here.

Hollowfaire

A huge underground cave system that is itself a large city where many fairy-type pokemon live. Dr. Steele was born here. It's the region's largest resource for magical crystals, exporting all around Alliair. Despite its large size, the culture in this city emphasizes the sharing of wealth with others, an ideal Dr. Steele seems to hold true to. The fairy-type gym is located here.

Altair City

One of Alliair's oldest formal settlements. The psychic-type gym is located here. Buildings old and new rise and become one.

Lost Dragon Bluff

Winding, unforgiving hills where old legends warned of a dragon who lived there. This legend was probably exacerbated by Clara's father, a salamence who terrorized Radiance and the surrounding small villages 200 years ago. Clara was born around here, and her parents were last seen here.

Chloria City

Settlements are built in and around a huge tree that grew one with magical energy. The grass-type gym is located here.

Lochset

Set within Luminous Lake, Lochset is an underwater city in the center of a Mystery Dungeon. The TSSB Bit: Tradition takes place here.

Mosaic City
