i just finished rereading lotr for the first time since i was nine and like i knew the movies did the whole steward's house dirty but The Movies Did The Whole Steward's House So Goddamn Dirty. i know this is not a revelation to you but i had to get it off my chest to someone who understands

I know it took me awhile to respond BUT NOT OUT OF DISAGREEMENT. They really, really did, and so many people are so insistent on Peter Jackson as the One True Arbiter of Tolkien's Vision that the shitty film interpretations of the House of Húrin are also completely inescapable.

I really do feel that there are understandable concessions to the medium and limitations of time etc and then there's whatever the hell that was. The point where Gandalf is calling them "lesser men" and using "steward" as a term of contempt (???????) and clobbering Denethor over the head where the devoutly Catholic Tolkien handled Denethor's despair and suicide with far more sympathy and care ... it's just so bad and there's nothing about film as a medium that requires it to be.

They had limited screen time, sure, and Faramir and Boromir and Denethor are not the most central characters, true—but there's also so much screen time wasted on indulgent bullshit like the skulls cascade and Frodo sending Sam away and so on. I don't remotely buy the justification that handling them so badly was somehow unavoidable and couldn't possibly have been done better for some reason.

I dislike certain choices made with Boromir, though there are some good points as well—there's a lack of subtlety in the foreshadowing that feels a bit like being repeatedly clubbed over the head rather than organically developing over time, but he does have some good moments as well that feel very Boromir. Movie Faramir, meanwhile, is so fundamentally dissimilar from Tolkien's in both TTT and ROTK that I feel he might as well be an OC, and one I don't find interesting or likable. I've always been deeply unconvinced by the justifications of the films' approach to him as the only workable one for the character. But then when you add to that the films' treatment of Denethor and the IMO completely unjustifiable handling of something as weighty as suicide, it just feels like there's a contempt for this family and their people built into the films' narrative that is hard to escape, either while watching it or in Tolkien fandom for the last 20 years.

New York groaned as he settled into bed, his aching sore muscles relaxing into the clean sheets as he laid back. Today was draining, so he'd been impatiently waiting for the moment that he got to crawl back into the comfort of his boyfriends and tell the world to fuck off.

"New York?" He heard a half awake mumble from next to him. He hummed as he was pulled closer to California, too tired to respond to him. He sighed contentedly as he felt the warmth of California's body heat wrap around him like a nice blanket, and felt his eyes start to droop more and more as the long day started to finally weigh on him.

"Sorry we didn't wait for you before going to sleep." He heard California's tired voice cut in again, and he swore he felt a sleeping New Jersey shift next to him. Worried that New Jersey may fall off the bed, he tugged New Jersey closer to him, wrapping an arm around his sleeping form.

"It's fine, Cal. Would've wanted youse two to be asleep right now anyways." His response was a bit slurred, the sleep refusing to relent on him. He smiled as he felt lips on his cheek, turning to give California a proper kiss on his lips in return. It was a bit of a struggle in the dark of the room, but he succeeded.

"Shhh, stop bein' sappy and go to sleep." New Jersey slurred out, draping his limbs over New York. He rolled his eyes fondly as New Jersey was practically laying on top of him, and held him tighter in his arm. Why New Jersey and California chose to sleep halfway on him every night, he wasn't sure, but he would be stupid to complain about it. Even if he jokingly acted upset about it in the morning, he'd never change it.

"You act like you don't have all of New York's preferences memorized by heart."

"Shut up Cal."

"Both of youse shut up."

California giggled before relaxing more into New York's side with a sigh. He felt as California lifted New Jersey's hand, hearing the faint sound of a kiss being pressed onto it and the sigh of a content flustered New Jersey.

New York left a light kiss on New Jersey's forehead in turn, and was happy to have the kiss returned. New Jersey and him were still working on becoming more physically affectionate with not only each other, but California too. It was still very new to them, but they were trying.

"Goodnight."

"Love you both."

"I don't know why."

"I understand me, but New York I'll never know why."

"Fuck you."

"Fuck you."

"Oh my god. Goodnight you too."

"Goodnight."

I mean, you're assuming I get all that many asks about GG these days. The show ended three years ago, and while it's still one that I love very dearly, I don't know if I have all that much left to say about it - I answered a lot of asks while the show was airing and in the year after it, and I wrote a lot of fic for it. While there are still some wips I'd like to finish one day (and it's those that I still sometimes get asks about), the truth is I haven't worked on them in a minute and don't know when inspiration will strike again (because inspiration does still sometimes strike - I even posted a new fic back in January).

I don't know. I'm allowed to be excited about other things, and sending an ask like this doesn't exactly make me want to run back to what's left of the fandom.

thinking about how in the grand scheme of things IK is like. inherently the bravest being in the devildom

Mind You it's not even to do with the massive amounts of trauma she's been through, it's solely because she is a human

Humans lives are like a second long compared to these centuries (eons even) old demons- she knows virtually nothing in the grand scheme of things compared to them

And yet despite her knowing nothing (and being aware that she knows nothing and could die at any second) she still walks forward with little hesitance, trusting and learning and growing which is the bravest thing you can really do as a human (imo)

Even just the fact that she lives knowing she could die at literally any moment makes her braver than like. half the cast. because while yes they have all been through their respective traumas, they still live for HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of years, and every like. 200 years or so they'll maybe once think 'man i've been alive a long time' and continue on with their day

IK, as a human, looks around at just. the place she's in. and registers that virtually anything there could kill her and says 'yeah I could probably survive'

I honestly feel like it awes the others, especially given their lack of knowledge on humans. If I was a demon I'd be like 'shouldn't thinking about dying break your brain or smth' and here's this baby walking around like 'hey how many ounces of fucking cyanide could I chug before things start getting serious'

And I rewatched Finding Nemo recently and pictured this scene with Lucifer and IK and I think I severely dehydrated myself with how much I cried

IK: "He says to let go! Everything is gonna be alright!!"

Lucifer: "How do you know?! How do you know something bad isn't going to happen?!"

IK: "I don't!"

for real though. it's like watching a baby bird fly for the first time. it's tiny and helpless and could be crushed in an instant in a predator's jaws, but it clambers out of the nest and jumps for the sky anyway, even if it could very well smash itself to pieces on the rocks below
