For some odd reason you couldn’t fall asleep. Not that the noises of constant terrors outside and the old sounds of the hotel didn’t have you usually sleeping like a baby it’s just that tonight of all nights seemed different.

Hi, I think this maybe constitutes a Wales Question! So, I'm English originally, currently in my third year at Aber university, and its reputation for "that place you go to study and then never ever leave" is looking like it's holding true. I've been living with two very good friends of mine who are extremely Welsh for nearly 2 years now, and in that time I've been slowly picking up bits of Welsh culture and language (it started with me not wanting to mess up trying to pronounce the biology building name and looking like an idiot, but I got very interested from there, and plan on taking a class after I graduate).

I'm serious about wanting to live here, I've fallen in love with the town and the country ever since my knowledge of it evolved from "dragons and sheep and funny long names on road signs" that I thought as a kid, and I've genuinely enjoyed being brought into the fold and joining in stuff with my friends, But. my friends are very adamant that this means I can Be Welsh, and I'm not sure how to take it. On one hand, of course I would like to be, but I'm not sure how much I can claim that confidently- I didn't grow up here, have barely lived here for that long, and there's still a lot I don't get so I'm worried about making it weird. On the other, I think adamantly declaring myself English instead and turning them down is very very easy to take the wrong way!

Okay so obviously I am slapping on a HUGE caveat here that I am No One, I am just another stranger at the shouting match who sometimes has some thoughts about things I see and the ability to amusingly compare things to other things. What follows are the lukewarm takes of Just Some Person, and not to be taken as gospel in any way.

But also lol you did ask and I love giving opinions, I do, so let's gooooo

So first up, I do think you're slipping into the fallacy here of playing the Boxes Game with something that doesn't fit neatly into boxes, as indeed nothing about humans and people and humans being people actually does. The thing about national/cultural identity is that they aren't precise, immutable data points. 'Culture' is already quite a loose and ethereal beast - you're basically drawing a circle around a bunch of things and going "Everything in here is X Culture!", and you'll be largely right doing that; but, the edge of the circle isn't, in reality, a hard border. It's a gradient. The circle will overlap with other circles, too. And sometimes even the things in the centre of the circle turn out to be absent half the time, and it's all a bit messy. Really, it's a bell curve, and you're just looking to see what turns up most frequently, with the understanding that you only get the big picture from all the data points together.

Nationality is even fuzzier, tbh. It's a highly personal thing. I'm very Welsh - my Welshness, though, looks different even from other Welsh people in Swansea, and certainly from a Welsh person living in Caernarfon. There are definitely unifying elements; but ultimately, it's something you kind of carve out for yourself, both consciously and unconsciously.

And I bring that up because part of your question is, "At what point do I cross the line into the circle? How long do I have to wait and how much do I have to do before Welshness happens? When do I get to claim the label?"

And there's no answer to that. Not for anyone. This is an identity issue, not a hard scientific concept. Kind of reminds me of a lot of questioning folks in the queer community, in fact. Humans like boxes and labels because they're comforting, but ultimately, we fit in them about as well as angry cats.

Maybe you can say you're "from England originally", or that you were born there but live here now; both of those are accurate, but also give the statement of intent. Yes, spinning can be made to be very portable. I've spun on the bus myself (mostly the train, but that's just because I take it a lot more often).

Transporting the wool:

if you just have loose wool in your bag like you might have loose yarn and knitting, that's probably not going to go well. to be brief: all wool that is not still fleece has been prepared. maintaining the preparation--keeping it clean, orderly, dry, and not compressed--is very important to being able to spin it easily and neatly. i absolutely can spin a jumble of wool that used to be roving that was partially chewed by a squirrel and then run over by a skateboard. but like, it won't look very good and you probably dont want that in your project. so the key to keeping your wool in good order is usually just to keep it in its own project bag, as you might with knitting/crochet anyway, and be careful specifically when taking it out and putting it away.

Transporting the spindle:

so, this depends 100% on the spindle you use. some spindles are made to travel, and others are definitely not (a glass-whorled supported spindle is probably a bad choice to take on the bus, for instance, because if you drop it, game over). most drop spindles are pretty hardy--they don't typically taper so the shaft is thick (hah) all the way to the top which means less breakable spots. cheaper and/or beginner drop spindles especially--the nicer ones often do have tapered tips.

that said, i personally have always found drop spindling while sitting down to be very uncomfortable. i know many people will disagree, so if you try it and it's comfortable, then that would be a fine choice for you. There are a lot of different kinds of spindles out there though, so a spindle for thigh spinning might be ideal for bus riding, or even just using a drop spindle supported like a pushka.

Tbh if you can keep your knitting needles from breaking/bending in transit then you're probably fine with spindles. And a cheap beginner drop spindle isn't much more than a new pair of needles, so...

Comfort food: My mother used to make this wonderfully rich stew with braised short ribs in bone broth! This stew also was packed with veegtables and spices - it was one of my favorite things growing up. We'd usually have it with a toasted baguette too for dipping! CASSIEL is a doppelgänger type alternate, you can see how he takes appearance as a cemetery angel but at the same time, a similar appearance to his creator and father; Gabriel. He usually blends in with the other statues in the cemetery. But what does he do exactly? Well we all know the real Archangel Cassiel, responsible for comforting to those in grief or in great sorrow. Well, this one does the exact opposite! He feeds off from people’s grief and will encourage the victim into more dread— leading themselves to M.A.D.

And i shit you not this guy doesn’t really do anything as much, thats because his residence is only and i mean ONLY in the cemetery because well apparently he blends better there, and when ofc they see an alternate roaming the streets they will immediately go apeshit.

He has yet nothing to do except just roam around the cemetery doing completely random things. Like blowing off candles from a grave, decaying lil flower bouquets, or just stay there intact like a natural statue. So yeah its..quite oddly boring for him. Although he's definitely fine in the night, he loves to just lay and watch the stars. It fascinates him that they burn eternally until they die out, nonetheless they're still beautiful. And his personality? He's more of a timid little fella but he's got a lil bit of burning sass laying inside somewhere. I mentioned that he’s kiiiind of made outta stone right? If he were to crack or loose a limb it’ll regenerate and reconstruct back to normal, you dont wanna see what horrid shit lays beneath those stone cracks. Sometimes it takes a while for him to reconstruct a limb lol.

But if its the end for him, he'll willingly accept his fate he's got nothing else to live for anyway FOR NOW— He still does rely a little on the humans to resolve it but he knows how atrociously dumb some humans can be /j /hj Oh AND he's irrationally a lil afraid of the other alternates because he knows it would be the death of him if he would do something maybe stupid or go after Alt!Gabe and they'd kill him on sight Imao so he just does about anything to avoid that from happening.

Nope he doesn’t fascinate himself in having a partner, so i guess he might be aromatic asexual 👀. Although he’a got a couple human friends! Surprisingly. It all started when Mika (another TMC OC of mine!) was visiting a dead friend's grave in the cemetery, so in connection with Cassiel, the grave where her dead friend is happens to be the graveyard where Cassiel is. so Cassiel got real curious about her cuz "wow why does she visit that grave so much?? lemme try and mess with her lol."

and so he did. but Mika realized what the hell was happening way too soon and there they met. He was left baffled and confused on why it didnt work, yes Mika was in grief for a couple moments— but hey that story wont be told on this one just yet 👀. But for context she's in a small organization in which her role is being a little expert on Alternates so she KNOWS stuff. But ye they went on a little truce that IF he doesnt kill her, she'll at least show him around outside of the cemetery like a lil guy seeing the world for the first time! So TIME SKIP TO THE PRESENT! a little while after, he’s now a part in the said organization and he now lives with Mika as a roommate and a friend, buddies!

I feel like the double episode format just... Really messed up the pacing. Way too much happened in way too little time, so there was nothing satisfying and the stakes didn't feel very high. I think there were also some big missed opportunities.

"New Ava" gets resolved in like the first 10 min with 0 impact on the overall story or the characters... like why. This should have been dragged out for the whole episode IMO, it would have been so fun. But they just wanted to get it out of the way to race to the Janine-leaving-Abbott story. Also Janelle looked fucking amazing and pretty much stole the episode, so they should have just let her run away with it instead of confining the humor and drama to the very beginning.

"Oh no Janine went to work for the district, oh no Teddie isn't going to happen maybe, omg Janine is working with a new cute guy" doesn't generate any emotional tension because it all gets talked through by the characters in a short time span and Janine and Gregory are friends again by the end of the episode thanks to the timeskip. The will they/won't they was timed really well throughout the first 2 seasons so where is that sense of timing now yk...

Barbara like... did not do much to be honest... She resolved the New Ava problem, but after that mostly stood around and was a sounding board and complained about the district/changed her tune after ONE conversation where Manny said what could reasonably be, pardon me, just bullshit, bc we don't know him well as a character yet, and somehow Barb was like yay :) I like the district now :). She felt really underutilized. She deserves a PLOTLINE this season. I feel like Sheryl gets a lot of praise and attention, but the show doesn't always give her opportunities to match what she really contributes.

The Gary/Melissa situation ground my gears a lot, like it's super great that Melissa stands her ground and rejects him with everyone's support, but tbh "Gary does a massive misogyny using the Philly Eagles and the whole school as a prop" seemed like a moment for Melissa to be angry, not just sad. Like why did she end up comforting HIM? I feel like every time the show brushes up against misogyny something dumb like this happens

Jacob is Jacob and does Jacob things which is fine.

I'm also wondering: where is the charter school storyline??? Have they not been able to get Leslie Odom Jr back? They set him up as a Big Bad and the threat of Abbott being forcibly turned charter as a serious concern and then that completely vanished. Does ABC have some charter school people on its board...? Lol. I would love to find out if maybe Manny and his weirdos could play into this and turn out to be charter school villains but rn this just feels like a major loose end.

It's hard bc I have such a sentimental attachment to the characters and seeing them all back again was so nice. But this felt like a super clumsy start to the season. I'm sure there was a lot of pressure on the writers as well, not just in terms of the double episode format, but because the show has gotten so many awards and so much press, they may have felt they HAD to throw absolutely everything out there to build up the premiere as huge and explosive.

I'm hoping the return to the half hr format will help smooth out a lot of the wrinkles and help bring back some of the structure, because IMO there were definitely hiccups and missteps in past seasons, but you could really feel an underlying story structure for many parts of the show (Teddie, Barb and Janine's relationship, Ava's growth, Melissa and her personal life). horrible, terrible, rancid, not worth mentioning. he has no trust for family and no love of it (aloe is a VERY heavy exception but aloe is an angel, how could you hate him?). realistically he distrusts family more than he distrusts a stranger because family, in most cases, knows you AND has something to gain from fucking you over, and it’s been illustrated to him time and time again that family doesn’t mean shit :))) (there is mostly tagetes to blame for this however, he doesn’t get along with iberis, narci and laven for a REASON—tho laven he does become more amiable towards by the time her book ends). ALSO parents???? sham. mix authority and entitlement AND family?? he’s not about it like at all. has zero faith in it whatsoever.

edit;; i forgot to talk about home. he has a very… lackluster concept of home tbh, which all relates to above. he’s never truly felt safe in anything but his own skin which is why how he dresses is in part expression, but also in part defense mechanism for him. being able to buy his own home later in life (aka after paramour) definitely helps him feel more comfortable in it, but he sort of forces himself to be a modicum of relaxed anywhere—or he essentially just bullies his way into people leaving him and the space he’s in alone.

hya’s a bruiser i’ll tell you that. he Really doesn’t prefer to physically fight because he thinks it’s brutish, a waste of time, and if someone fucks up his appearance he’s going to be whatever level is Beyond Infuriated. but… he is a man that very much talks with his fists. in another life where he wasn’t so pompous (looking at you slum aus), he would absolutely be a force to reckon with. even in canon, he can lay someone out with one good hook because he’s not really about finesse or torture—it’s all the skill points in power baby and he will Lay You Out.

but i have to reiterate, esp in canon, he’s Really not in the vibe to put his hands on people unless he’s positive they won’t reciprocate (amon is a good example lol. he’s punched amon confirmed once and as i write who knows? maybe more).

for hawk, i've put him in literally everything at this point- he's a very versatile character but my favorite setting to put him in is definitely as a security guard for the pizzaplex. he'd just fit so well imo.

for springtrap and monty- i actually keep imagining them in the pokemon universe? they would not fit at all, but i just love assigning pokemon teams for my favorite characters. my main thing i keep crossing them over into is my oc universe with lore so deep i'd genuinely need several hours just to explain it-

for hawk? yes. we'd both be incredibly anxious and weird around each other but we could bond easily over our love of rabbits and insane ramblings. though knowing me we'd probably end up sitting in silence together for an hour or making out tbh

springtrap? my interpretation of him- yes. absolutely, i would take him home in an instant. he'd have to get used to my autism flaring up constantly around him because he's so cute but i feel like he'd be endeared by it, personally-

monty? honestly uh, it depends! i don't do well around prickly people because of my anxiety and due to my interpretation of him being prickly with a soft interior... depends on exactly what he says, really. man's absolutely a big softy though so i feel like we could be friends.

ooohohooho. hawk's fashion aesthetic is definitely mid-2000s emo boy, 100%, unapologetically. but i also imagine him liking soft pastels and dresses, so really he's a huge mixed bag. get you a man who can do both (and everything in between)

for springtrap- i imagine him wearing anything hawk makes for him, but he's incredibly attached to cute little vests. i imagine him being emotionally attached to spring bonnie- and with hawk repairing him to look more like him, he'd lean more into the fashion he dressed them in. vests, ties, little hats- though i feel like he would prefer wearing loose, flowing clothing such as dresses or skirts. imagining springtrap wearing a cute purple sparkling vest that hangs open with a soft yellow skirt is living rent free in my mind-

monty definitely loves wearing anything with scales on it. i imagine him wearing incredibly flamboyant glamrock clothing (though that seems a bit obvious-) but also having a HUGE soft spot for punk rock fashion. he definitely wears a black denim jacket with the sleeves cut off and patches all over it, belts and chains- the works. he would look so good in a spiked collar

I know this is like, WAY too early to ask since you have other projects to work on, but have you thought about making a sequel? Now that Touya's out of there, it would be him FINALLY being able to heal, though the guy has a hell of a way to go. Would the LOV take him back to the facility with them, or would they all go on the run again?

I'm not sure about a sequel tbh. It would be kinda a mess to work through since Dabi really isn't in the headspace to work through any of that or really accept comfort, and no offense to the League but they're not really able to properly support him with that stuff neither. They'd probably remain on the run since while the program wasn't terrible, it would be difficult for them to get back into after breaking out and Dabi probably wouldn't end up there regardless because of the whole endeavor situation. It's all kinda a mess, and as implied there at the end, Touyas more stuck thinking it'll turn into another thing he's gonna ruin.

Id definitely consider a sequel one day especially since there's a lot of loose ends that are left very much in the open, but it would be a whole other project so idk
