I feel like i am unable to express into words how important the HTTYD books are for me and what an fantastical experience it was to grow up with the characters, so instead i will express my feelings by talking about my first time reading the last books, How to Fight a Dragon's Fury.
For context, i read book 11 before book 12 was published and i didn't knew when book 12 would come out, i didn't look in the internet or anything. I only found out the publication of book 12 when i saw it in the shopping mall bookstore. Me and my dad where about to exit the mall when i decided to visit the bookstore, i went straight to the children's and youth section i saw a big display in a table to a new book with a turquoise cover. Surrounded by other children, I approached the table so I could see the cover of the book, the first thing that caught my attention was the gigantic reptilian eye, then i noticed the name right above : Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III.
Recognizing that this was the long-awaited conclusion to my favorite series, I nearly screamed in the middle of the bookstore before picking up the book and begging my dad to buy it. He bought it and I was so excited to find out what happened that I started reading it in the car, even though I have severe motion sickness when i am in a vehicle and not looking directly at the windows. When I got home I just read, non-stop, because I needed to know what was going to happen to Hiccup and Toothless. I started reading in the middle of the afternoon and when it was 2 in the morning my mother came back from a Carnaval party and noticed the lights of my room were still on, she opened the door and found me lying on my bed in the fetal position crying desperately. I had finished the book, but I felt like my childhood had ended with it and I felt so much pain saying goodbye to the characters I had followed for so long. These feelings, along with the grief I felt for Furious and that beautifully written epilogue made me burst into tears, but I didn't feel bitterness or frustration, the ending was perfect, the message was perfect.
To this day i say that How to Fight a Dragon's Fury is one of if not my favorite book, because even though I've grown up and read many wonderful works since then, nothing will ever stay with me more than the story of a little Viking who had to become a hero the hard way.

More dragon rider disability headcanons for disability pride month!
(Ones specifically abt Hiccup are here)
Ruffnut has hypermobile EDS (when the twins were doing some bit that was basically Guinness book of world records she said smth abt 'worlds stretchiest skin' and my mom made a joke and said 'ruff has eds!' And it stuck)
A joke Ruffnut loves to make is saying Tuff is so insufferable she should just run away to join a circus and become a contortionist. She thinks it's the funniest thing ever
Hiccup also has some weird hypermobility stuff going on, when Ruff learns this she calls him a fellow circus freak (affectionate) and offers to let him come with her when she runs away. The response she got was "I'd rather stick my hand in Fenrir's mouth."
Tuff is visually impaired in his right eye from a childhood injury (another joke taken seriously)
All the riders are neurodivergent!
Snotlout has a frequently irregular heartbeat as well as memory issues due to how many times he's been struck by lightning. His whole book he wrote in that one episode isn't the only writing he does, he keeps a notebook to help keep track of minor things he might forget.
Astrid tries to make Hiccup breakfast in bed when he's having bad pain days and is too tired to do it himself. She almost burns the house down every time, so Toothless will go and get the other riders to help out while Astrid is kicked out of the kitchen and sent back to bed
Hiccup can be really fucking mean sometimes! Usually it's intentional bc he's in a bad mood and wants to be left alone. If it's seemingly unprovoked though, the others know it as a sign he's likely in pain and needs to be left alone (he still insists on getting work done but usually Toothless annoys him into resting)
Astrid has aches in her leg from when she got shot with that arrow, it being poisoned with dragon root did something to mess up the healing process so its worse than other old injuries (Dragon root isn't poisonous to humans but still having it in your blood stream isn't a good idea). She's also very mean when she's in pain, especially because it ruins her schedule since she can't train. Eventually her and Hiccup come to an agreement when they're having bad pain days they'll meet up in one of their huts and just. Sit together enjoying the others comforting presence but rarely talking
This is because Hiccup and Astrid both hate being in pain in front of people, they both share that almost extreme fear of vulnerability and the best they can do is take comfort in each other
Hiccup and Fishlegs are hyperfixation buddies! Fishlegs is the only one who doesn't get mad (it's just fond exasperation) when Hiccup wakes him up in the middle of the night to infodump, they just bounce off each other talking about dragons until woah suddenly the sun is rising and that is when Fishlegs gets upset because he values his sleep
All the riders have burn scars of varying severity. They literally work with dragons there's no way they wouldn't. And they all deal with their pain in different ways, but are unwavering supportive of each other when they can be
I've said it before and I'll say it again, a lot of characters should be disabled.
I know, cartoon logic and all, but the things that happen to these guys are things that should affect them for the rest of their lives. And watching characters struggle with permanent change like that, the realization you can never go back to how things were, and eventually healing and learning that's okay! You can still find happiness and be happy and it doesn't make your pain any less valid! It's so important to me and that's obviously reflected in my interpretations of my favorite characters lmao

[heavy sigghhhhhhhhh]
Okay, it's 9:30 in the morning, but I don't want to go out in the cold yet so we're addressing THIS instead.
First and foremost, turning Emmrich into the victim (and then whining about the lack of Solas) is what's cringe here. Not only is some of this wrong (Harding only brings up the age issue because Emmrich expresses his own concerns and she then acts as a sounding board for him), but it's getting tiresome to act as if the other companions don't have reasons to voice their opinions (I'm getting particularly tired of people not listening to the exchange with Taash and considering how they might feel). You can apparently consider things from Emmrich's perspective, but you refuse to consider things from everyone else's.
I'll put this under the cut - I hope no one has plans because we're going to be here a while.
A lot of the complaints in the post neatly latch onto individual ones I've run across in the past, so I'm just going to make one big response.
Emmrich is my favorite character in Veilguard, and second only to Varric for the whole series.
But he can be stuffy, snobbish, overly pedantic, he gets into other people's business and loses emotional perspective when the academic focus takes over, is possibly attempting to make a major life change based on barely-addressed trauma, and is prone to bouts of melancholy where he has to be drawn out by his friends and/or lover about whatever is actually bothering him, rather than him communicating his issues. He is not perfect,
That's why it's very interesting in that post to see someone claiming that "no one's bullshit is called out." When the companions "dunk" on Emmrich, it's a two-way street. Sometimes the companion is wrong, sometimes Emmrich is wrong.
Neve and Emmrich resolve their issues peaceably - it's not toothless, it's just that they're both mature adults and neither of them get actively hostile with others if they don't have to. They talk it through over several conversations, and decide the other is fine - good company even! - and move on to sharing Manfred, sharing poetry (you have to read the codex), sharing spell books, joking with each other, they're my favorite to bring out together despite not having interlocking talents.
Davrin and Emmrich start somewhat peacably - Emmrich tries to encourage him that he will find Assan's siblings, and I've gotten dialogue about the books the lighthouse has to offer early on - and then they begin their magic and child-rearing arguments. And Davrin ISN'T IN THE WRONG.
1) while it seems silly to us for Davrin to be a Fade denier, what's more interesting to me is that he points out that in a group of mages arguing about the Fade, there's never a cohesive answer. It's like listening to philosophers or religious experts never coming up with one clear answer about their favorite topics to mentally masturbate over. Davrin likes "science". He's writing a monster manual, ffs. He wants solid answers. One thing I love about Davrin is he's never afraid to call something that's bullshit, bullshit. Weird magical things happening in Arlathan? Bullshit. (and they are) Living in the lighthouse and feeling like it's ooky spooky? Bullshit. (and it kinda is) Questioning the boss about the god stuck in their head feeding them bullshit? 100% should be doing that. You should be listening to Davrin more - he's the voice telling you not to go into the haunted house, y'all, it might save your life.
2) He's also not wrong about Emmrich helicopter parenting Manfred, and almost none of how Davrin handles Assan is any of Emmrich's business, or area of expertise.
We need to stop getting upset at Harding for talking Emmrich through his worries about an age difference (this is something I think Bioware handled badly in that not everyone headcanons their Rook at a younger age, but also, Emmrich clearly has an issue with aging due to his thanatophobia). He shows signs of distress, and she talks him through it and offers advice. For some reason, a large part of the fandom has decided to take his issues out on HER, which is *wild* but not unexpected given the deeply internalized misogyny I've seen displayed. Not only that, but Sylvia herself has come out on Harding's side, because she wrote Emmrich that way.
Getting irritated at Taash is honestly wrong on so many levels at this point. I don't diagnose other people or characters, so I won't get into the ND aspect (it's fine if you relate to it, I'm not stopping you), but I will say this: Taash comes from a completely different culture than Emmrich, which finds using dead bodies so "callously" to be abhorrent, and their particularly sensitive sense of smell makes anything having to do with death even more disgusting to them (have you ever smelled a corpse, or dead animals? My migraines enhance my sense of smell, and make normal things smell awful sometimes) and finally, they are IN THEIR EARLY 20'S AND FULLY ACT LIKE IT. That means not everything they do is going to be as mature as the rest of the party, who are in their early to mid 30's, (and Emmrich was listed as 50-52). You can outright tell Emmrich to cut the shit, and he reels himself back with zero disapproval because he realizes ALL of this in a single second. *He's* the grown-ass man and professor here and shouldn't be escalating their argument. He values Taash, and changes his entire behavior toward them IMMEDIATELY, because *he was in the wrong*. And Taash responds to it, in a positive manner. You do not need to protect Emmrich from Taash.
Even Lucanis refuses to talk to Emmrich about Spite in some dialogue, because he feels more like a academic project than a person.
No companion is explicitly "called out" because sometimes these characters are calling *Emmrich* out. You're just refusing to see that he might be acting badly in his very quiet, stuffy way.
**put a pin in the Davrin/Lucanis bit**
Now.
After seeing a series of screenshots ending with this:

I got a little fixated with finding out which route unlocked this dialogue. It turns out you, as Rook, can romance Emmrich while expressing distaste for death, necromancy, and the undead the entire time - effectively dissing his profession and life's work, to paraphrase the post I linked - and Emmrich doesn't actually disapprove. Any time you can express disaste without missing a flirt option, if you do that, he takes it in stride. And then you can flirt as normal. He is *used* to people feeling this way. I think all Nevarrans are. I rather suspect he doesn't give a shit what the companions think about his job, at his age - he's written books, he's given lectures, he's a senior Watcher. Their opinions don't matter. He's at the top of his game, he has nothing to prove to them. Rook hired him, not them. And Rook? If you romance him, and take this route, his answer to you is: "There's no shame in a little attraction to the forbidden, my darling."
This man is a fucking menace. He doesn't need defending - you need defense against his rizz.
Now, Solas.
Yes, Solas taunts him for being a lich. Solas also taunts Davrin for being Dalish and what he must have heard about Solas from his people. Solas also tries to flatter Emmrich if he remains human. Solas tries to butter up Lace by apologizing to her. It's almost as if Solas is the "god" of deceit and trickery and presents as many different faces as their are people or even aspects of those people. He will present whatever face he thinks he needs to in order to get under their skin, or throw them off their game. Solas doesn't care about Emmrich becoming a lich. He doesn't actually care about any of the companions. He cares about tearing down the Veil. What choices you've made do not matter to him on a personal level except inasfar as he can use you. That's who he is. I hate it for you if you haven't realized and accepted this by now.
There are a lot of people who think Solas and Emmrich "nerd out" in their dialogue, and I just don't see it. I've held back from this descriptor in this lengthy response, but Emmrich constantly displays a very "British" politeness - and he does it when Solas attempts to flatter him in the end game. Emmrich doesn't express a *personal* wish to have a conversation with Solas. He says there are things the Watchers wish to have answered. It's professional for him. Solas kidnapped Rook, someone who, romanced or not, Emmrich spent weeks making a damn good facsimile of the lyrium dagger in order to save. Emmrich isn't going to outright tell Solas to go fuck himself, because he's too well-mannered, and he's got an affinity about spirits. But he's not inviting him over for tea and crumpets.
I don't understand where the idea that Emmrich holds off from flirting back because of the age gap comes from. "I must be sure to live up to expectation" - do you...do you not see that as him flirting back? TBH I think this guy flirts first and then kicks himself because "that's the boss" (and probably gets told about what's happened with Varric) and only REALLY gets serious when he thinks "No, there actually is something here" when Rook has flirted a few more times after that, plus helped him in his personal quest. Age gap be damned. A lot of us did not play Rooks with an age gap, or that much of one - mine was my age, well within Earth "norms" these days.
Okay, back to the Davrin and Lucanis bit.
Saying that Lucanis is "okay because he's an assassin that only kills bad people" is missing the point. Lucanis fully admits that he has only killed people who are guilty by his own yardstick. I'm sure all the companions could agree there are some standards (children) but even in D'Meta's crossing you're faced with a moral choice where not everyone agrees what to do (free the mayor or don't) and it's very clear that not everyone has the same standards about what makes a "killer". So why should you assume that Lucanis is a guilt-free assassin? We know that he frees slaves, we know that he earned a reputation killing Venatori mages. But he demures from Emmrich's excited statements that he "empathizes" with all his victims. There's absolutely no way he was able to vet all his kills, and who decides who "deserves" to be killed? You're meant to contrast this with Davrin's warm empathy for the criminals who join the wardens and become "something better" - the kinds of people who start bad and change into something good, who get a second chance to help and contribute to Thedas society in a meaningful way. But the Wardens have their own dark history, they're often corrupt. Lucanis and Davrin are two *good people* propping up their own suspect organizations, both of which are doing the best they can in imperfect situations. It's like watching a gang member and a cop slowly understand each other.
Please for the love of Andraste. Go read widely and expose yourself to other things and other people. It will help you gain perspective. This is a GOOD game, and not thinking critically about the conversations and choices, or trying to see things from each character's perspective, is what's holding people back from enjoying the richness and replayability it has to offer.

HTTYD Tag Game
I was tagged by @blueorchid1707 and @knight-says-oioioi ! Thank you!! :D
What is your favorite…
Character design: Valka probably. Her armour is SO fucking cool. HTTYD2 VALKA. NOT HTTYD3 VALKA SHE ISNT REAL.
Character: Hiccup. My dude my guy my little prisoner.
Dragon from the main 5: Toothless!!! Pancake head mf
Dragon species overall: Night fury
Ship: Hiccstrid!! (With buffstrid ofc)
Character dynamic: Hiccup and Stoick. Emotionally repressed guys that only have each other as family 🙏
Villain: Viggo. But if the scrapped Villain Valka from httyd2 counts then her.
Episode: Midnight scrum. Has to be🙏
Joke: OUGH THIS IS A DIFFICULT ONE. It's kinda hard to think about off the top of my head cuz the whole franchise has SO many good jokes, but the 'Hiccup Haddock is a magical creature,' joke from the twins where they say 'He's always got a terrible terror, or a new tailfin, or a dragonblade,' is what i'd go for. I fucking love it when shows are self aware.
OH AND!! In riders/defenders that one episode where Astrid and Snotlout bickering is the whole plot, and Snotlout shows up at Hiccup's door to complain about Astrid but Hiccup is trying to convince his dad that everything is running smoothly, so before snotlout can say anything bad Hiccup shoves him out of the door and yells 'OH LOOK A FULL MOON!' followed by 'You are killing me!'. That one is fucking brilliant.

My opinions on how to train your dragon: the hidden world (if you liked the 3rd movie, look away):
while there are definitely things I enjoyed about the 3rd film, there are also a lot of problems with it that make me view the 2nd film as the end of the canon content.
First I don’t hate the ending, in fact I like the emotional ending of the dragons leaving (I wish it didn’t end that way but thats a whole different thing). What I hate is why toothless left in the first place. He left for a female dragon he knew for like a day. I’m sorry you’re throwing away a SIX YEAR friendship for a girl you met in A DAY. (Also mind you he literally became the alpha in the last movie to protect Hiccup so…) I don’t buy it. The ending would be so much better if there was no light fury and toothless and hiccup realize the dragons need to leave to be safe. Toothless leaving for the safety of his species is a good ending. What makes it not work for me is the light fury. I would have preferred if the light fury didn’t exist (besides just hating the concept her design is also lazy). If she needs to be in the movie, they should have limited her impact. Too much time was spent on this light fury that overall didn’t add much to the story for me.
Secondly, grimmel. UGH I did not like him. He just was not a good villain by any means. He was set up to be this brilliant and calculated villain but he fell extremely flat. Most of his calculated “genius” moves only paid off because the gang made mistake after mistake. (Truthfully hiccup made so many unhiccup like decisions in this film). Also, I did not like the rehashed “dragons working for the bad guy” trope. Grimmel is supposed to be this masterclass dragon hunter, so why does he need dragons to help him? It makes no sense (and quite frankly having a villain who didn’t need dragons to take down other dragons would be way more scary than what we got).
My favorite villain is Viggo Grimborn because they set him up as the strategic game player and actually back it up. I stand by the fact that Viggo is what they wanted Grimmel to be. Viggo is actually the smart villain they wanted grimmel to be because his wins don’t come about because hiccup or the gang make a stupid mistake. He wins because he is out thinking hiccup. Like hiccup is playing an amazing game and is making good moves, Viggo just makes better ones. Viggo also benefits from being a tv show villain since they have more time to build up his character. In that same vein, I think Grimmel would have been a better tv show villain because for his type of character you need more build up.
Lastly, leaving Berk/the hidden world. First off you could just tell it was such a forced in plot point. Like how was grimmel so much more of threat than Drago and a colossal sized alpha dragon that they needed to leave berk (again in part to the lack of development of Grimmel). I just didn’t feel that there were enough stakes for them to leave Berk.
Don’t even get my started on the characters. Everyone was pushed aside except for hiccup, Astrid and toothless. Let’s not even get into snotlout’s weird obsession with Valka (why couldn’t they have just made her a mother figure for the gang idk). Toothless losing everything that made him a terrifying dragon that was called the offspring of lighting and death itself. Like I get he is supposed to be like tamed and all that but the 2nd movie was a good balance between the two. Why did they have to push it even farther?
Anyway, that’s my rant on the third movie.

Just watched the httyd live action, and honestly, I came in with such low hopes and it completely blew me away.
It had so much of the originals feel, it felt like they completely understood the movie.
My favorite is definitely stoick. I know the voice actor came for the role, but he understood stoick and was so amazing at it.
The cgi was great too, the fight between the nightmare and stoick was flawless. There were a few points that toothless looked really weird, but a lot of the time it just looked like toothless was there with the characters. They all worked with the cgi so beautifully.
If you are a snotlout fan, you will love this movie. He gets so much character especially with spitelout. He gets so many great moments that are so true to his character.
The only parts I can say wernt as good were some of the cut scenes (I really missed the terrible terror scene). Gobber felt off in the beginning parts of the movie, it didn't feel like he got the right tone for a lot of his lines, but by the second dragon training scene, he had it a lot better.
And finally, astrid. Astrids actor was amazing she so completely got Astrid. She had her anger, her quiet moments, just everything about her performance was amazing. It was just the lines. The lines were really weird to me. Every line that she was given from the original, flawless. Every line that wasn't, felt weird and not by any fault of the actor. It was honestly like that for a few of the characters.
Now for a small spoiler part
Im really curious to how they're going to do the second and third movie with how much they're building up Astrid being chief.
Because Astrid is the one who leads the teens in this movie, even at the end where they're splitting up to distract the queen while hiccup gets toothless, shes the one directing the teens instead of hiccup. While makes me curious to how hiccups arc of becoming his own person and own chief in the second movie. Cuz it seems like Astrid is just gonna become chief and hiccup won't have to worry about it.
I dont think its bad persay, just looking forward to see how it turns out in this direction.
Overall, the movie was great, i had points where I went, eh the animation is better, and others where I was I thought the live action was better. Not a bad live action.

*bodily shoves the hivemind to the side with great difficulty* forget about that, there's more important issues. give me a random headcanon you have about hookfang 🤲
A HOOKFANG ASK!! My favorite, how did you know!? *shoves my blog theme, repeated posts, and tag game where I said so behind me*
Ohh the silly guy, which headcanon to pick,,,
I fully believe Snotlout’s name was miscommunicated when Hookfang was still fine tuning his comprehension of Norse. The sounds are close enough to other human words, n dragon naming conventions are more reasonable so he didn’t question it, and then it caught on with the others and, well-
Hookfang has been calling him SmallLoud.
Toothless was aware his actual name is Snotlout, meaning the other dragons were in the loop the whole time that it’s Snotlout, but they call him SmallLoud anyway. Because Hookfang fucked up. He will never admit this and continues to use the name anyway, because it is more appropriate for the guy.
In his defense, character traits are very common name aspects for dragons! And human naming conventions are bullshit! What in maker’s sky is an Astrid. What is a lout. Fishlegs is a valid name but it’s still a dumb one. Hookfang will maintain that the twins and Hiccup are the only appropriately titled Vikings in the group.

How to Train Your Dragon (2025) is…
A faithful, epic live-action remake! For my money, it’s the best one ever made. Has something most of the Disney remakes don’t: passion. Even if this remake wasn’t “necessary,” good movies are good movies, and Dean Deblois’s involvement ensures that this live-action adaptation of Dreamworks’ animated modern classic is as respectful and soaring as it’s predecessor. It comes damn close to matching the original’s quality.
The dragons and overall presentation are pretty much flawless. Berk is brought to life thanks to massive sets and tons of viking extras, while the dragons - from Toothless to Stormfly to the countless dragons we see outside of them - are remarkably faithful and expressive despite being photo-realistic. This world feels lived-in and chaotic, with details in the costumes and production design that hints at a larger history not as present in the original film. This remake is mostly shot-for-shot, but small touches - including new minor characters - sets this live-action world apart from the animated franchise just enough.
Cast rises to the occasion, with Mason Thames offering his own, more mature take on Hiccup that’s a little less grating and helpless than his animated counterpart. Nico Parker, likewise, makes this version of Astrid her own. Gerard Butler’s return as Stoick is just as steadfast and strong as his original voiceover performance - nobody feels like they’re phoning it in. The proper story beats are still impactful, the music by John Powell makes me want to have a dragon of my own, and the final battle honestly has my favorite rendition of the Red Death. It’s a great time!
Grade: B+

Hi since it's aro-spec week I'd like to just highlight one of my absolute favorite things about httyd, from the viewpoint of an aromantic:
The importance it puts on platonic relationships.
The whole franchise is of course, centered around Hiccup and Toothless' bond. They're friendship is from the beginning built on unconditional trust. They care for each other so much. They are best friends, hey mean everything to each other and have a bond nothing else (even romantic relationships) could ever rival.
(I could say so much more about them honestly but it's all probably been said before by someone better at articulating their thoughts so whatever)
Another aspect I love is while there are romantic relationships and plots, they're not shoved in the audience's faces. Other than certain episodes dedicated to Hiccstrid's development, it's mostly just, there. Neither the story nor the characters' lives revolve around it and it's honestly a bit refreshing.
Hiccup and Astrid very clearly value they're friendship. In the episode they got together, what Hiccup said to her very clearly implied how important to him she is, and he'd be fine even if they weren't romantic partners, as long as they can still be with each other.
And that's so special to me.
Like, it is not something you often see in media. And even when they do start dating, they primarily put their friendship first—and not just with each other, like there's a whole rtte episode basically dedicated to why they need to value their friendships just as much as they value each other.
And of course, the friendship between the dragon riders as a whole. As much as they fight, and despite their actions towards Hiccup in the past, they all clearly care for each other immensely and unconditionally. It's so unfortunate that they're just side characters in the movies, I really wish they're friendships got more of a spotlight but at least we have Rob and Rtte.
(Imo it does a very good job making these characters relatable whether you feel romantic attraction or not.)

It’s truly a tragedy how much Toothless’s design has devolved throughout the HTTYD franchise
How to Train Your Dragon

The og. The king. The man, the myth, the legend. One of the greatest character designs in character design history, possibly the most unique and creative dragon design in all fiction with his beautiful markings based on the spots of a black panther and his ear nubs like an axolotl. The attention to detail on him in the film is perfection, such as giving him scars after being shot down by Hiccup and even adding specks of dirt on his skin.
He’s also very expressive while still feeling animalistic, a perfect blend of both a frightening and dangerous predator and a playful, adorable friend.
How to Train Your Dragon 2

Clearly a whole new model, there’s several negatives but overall pretty good. My favorite thing is that they added subtle changes to show that he’s aged, such as his nose spikes (sorry I’m tired and can think of the proper anatomy term lol) being longer and new little nubs on his chin.
Now the negatives…his beautiful markings are less visible, his head is taller, more smushed in, there’s a dip in his lips, his eyes are rounder and closer together and he has large brow bones. The brow bones are expressive, sure, but was perfectly expressive in the first film without them. They make his expressions seem more human-like when he previously was able to still feel like an animal no matter how expressive he got. Aging doesn’t smush your skull in and magically make your eyes move closer together, so it’s clear the changes here were done to make him cuter and more marketable.
He’s also noticeably bulked up and as a result seems less aerodynamic than in the first film. Sure, you could argue this is another sign of aging, and I understand that argument, but Night Furies just feel like they’re meant to have that sleek aerodynamic build throughout their lives so idk what to think about this change.
How to Train Your Dragon 3: The Hidden World

MY EYES
Dreamworks really said “What if we took all the negatives from his first sequel redesign and dialed them up to a billion”.
His head is now even taller and has been mutilated into a bulky square, his eyes are now completely round with permanently dilated pupils even when angry or frightened (can’t forget to keep him cute for marketing!) and are now even closer together and forward facing with even more massive eyebrows to help make him look like the braindead, slobbering dog he’s become.
Also by this point his body language and expressions no longer feel like a real animal, his expressions and movements are either too human or animal-like but in an exaggerated, comedic way. Like I said above, he’s also become a “derpy no thoughts head empty” meme in both his mannerisms, personality and facial expressions. Seeing him devolve into the “animal that isn’t a dog acts like a dog” trope is especially sad since him having mannerisms inspired by felines and bats feels just felt so creative.
His aerodynamic build has been replaced by a bulky square beast and his beautiful markings have basically vanished. His velvety black color palette is gray now, his skin looks less textured and oddly smooth and he weirdly seems shiny (especially his face scales). A majority of his scars have also vanished as well.
The artists also clearly gave up on showing visible signs of aging. Spikes haven’t grown, the new nubs from the last film haven’t grown, he hasn’t grown any new nubs (true we don’t know how many nubs a fully mature night fury would have but it’s fun to speculate lol)…
Well, the positive side is that it can’t possibly get any worse, right?
How to Train Your Dragon: The Cashgrab
Mom can you pick me up I’m scared.
HTTYD 3 Toothless looks like peak character design compared to this thing. Hell, the friggin LIGHT FURY looks like peak character design compared to this thing.
This is uncanny valley Toothless. You can tell it’s meant to be Toothless, but something is way, WAY off.
From what we’ve seen so far, he’s no longer a brainless slobbering dog but he’s seen to devolve into the other extreme by being emotionless and soulless (which I guess is fitting considering this is a soulless movie lmao). He seems brainless again but in a different way; while HTTYD 3 Toothless was “DERP, NO THOUGHTS, HEAD EMPTY 🤪” brainless, live-action Toothless is “😐” brainless.
His skin texture also looks…slimy? The scales on his face are also gone. And yes, once again his beautiful markings are gone.
His anatomy is also fucked up once again. The awful head shape from HTTYD 3 is back, he has digitigrade legs now, his bat-inspired wings now look generic, his eyes are once again front-facing, his head is massive now and those damn brow bones are back. Weirdly enough he also has extra nubs.
His skin is once again dark gray instead of velvety black and his eyes are a VERY saturated shade of green which funny enough makes him look faker than the original Toothless. Overall the original animated Toothless looks more like a realistic animal than the new Toothless that’s meant to be the “realistic” one c
I’m sure there’s more to analyze about live-action Toothless but I’ve been typing this too long that my brain is begging me to end this post lmao.
Let me end this by saying that I’ve seen some people theorize that the reason Toothless’s markings disappeared over time is because night furies lost their markings as they get older (like lion cubs). Yes that would make sense but me personally I refuse to believe night furies ever lose their markings. The movies can’t tell me otherwise and neither can you.

ik no one asked me, but i said i was going to do it regardless. so, behold:
more reasons why i think the httyd live action shouldn’t exist!
first of all, the dragon designs. i don’t get them. i definitely don’t like them. they look like bland, generic dragons that have nothing to do with their animated counterparts. the dragons in the animated films are full of life, they look appealing, they catch your eye, because that is their purpose! to be appealing to the public! they are meant to look nice, their designs are supposed to have personality, which the live action remakes notably lack. they look bad, they’re ugly, even. and i don’t get it, because recently we’ve seen how easy it is to have good representation while still honouring the original design, with the universal epic universe. they did it how it was supposed to be done! toothless still looks like toothless, the guy who plays hiccup acts and talks like hiccup, stormfly looks like stormfly, and so do every other character and dragon. hookfang has nothing left of his intelligence, his agility, his charm. he’s a generic red dragon that holds nothing left of the grace a monstrous nightmare should have. he looks dumb, he looks soulless, he isn’t hookfang.

stormfly is a whole other thing. i just don’t like her. her design is bad, she looks atrocious. i don’t like what they’ve done to her head, to the way it’s distributed. she doesn’t look menacing, she looks dumb. she’s boring and stormfly shouldn’t be boring, and that’s one of the worst ways in which they’ve fucked up.

meatlug, i’m not even going to talk about her. she looks like a deformed hippo, and she’s probably my least favorite. she went from a charming dragon to a fat pug with breathing issues. and her color palette is just so, so bland. i hate her in the la.

barf and belch, meh. i do not like them, but i guess that’s because by the time they announced their design, i had already lost all hope. same as with hookfang, they lost their appeal. they are another generic two headed green dragon. they lost the sly look a zippleback should have, their playful look, everything. and i also hate they way their head is distributed. also, why don’t they have their zipple neck anymore??? what was the point of taking that away???? (tf is wrong w him in this pic😭)

terrible terror?? stupid. they took a chameleon and put wings on it. looks nothing like a terrible terror and has become a winged lizard. nothing more.

it’s just so amazing how they’ve managed to suck all the life out of the original desings and leave us with nothing more than poorly done cgi and horrible designs. the red death and the rumblehorn are just so bad i’m not even going to say anything about it. (she's so ugly, i can't)

define glowdown. i'll start:

now i wanted to dedicate another section of this post to talk about toothless. because he makes me genuinely mad. he is not a night fury. he is not the menacing dragon he’s supposed to be. he isn’t the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself. he’s a bulky, drooling puppy who has nothing left of his original personality. i already talked about his design in my other post, but i wanted to point out that, aside from fucking up his design, they have made him as dumb as a rock. in all the scenes in which he’s supposed to look menacing. the downed dragon, where he should look like the most dangerous dragon hiccup has never encountered, he looks like a wet puppy. instead of “i’m going to kill you” it seems like he’s thinking “please, don’t kill me!” wth????

i also saw this and i have to add it because he looks awful

when they’re inside the nest, with the red death, instead of alert and threatening, ready to attack if anything bad happens, he’s looking around like “i'm not experiencing a single emotion right now”

doesn't look scared when fighting the red death, either??? stupid.

i hate it. i hate it with all my might. that’s not toothless. that’s not the night fury. that’s a newly tamed dragon, not a puppy! also, why does he have drogon type wings? why would they feel like they needed to change that???

last image to prove my point:

and i get that they wanted to make them look more realistic, but they should know that, in a live action, that’s basically impossible. which leads me to my next point. dragons don’t belong in reality. they’re fictional. that’s why the animation was such a nice way of representing them, because within the animation universe, anything is possible,. dragons, magic, anything. but when you take that into a live action, things don’t work out anymore. because dragons don’t belong in the real world. they look completely out of place. and that’s why i’ll never get tired of saying that we should stop treating animation as a lesser way to tell a story. animation is valid, animation is beautiful and animation gives you a lot more range to do whatever you want. anything can happen in animation. it is a valid way of portraying media and we’re basically ignoring it to favor shitty live actions that no one asked for.
next, and i think last, are the scenes they changed. and not only the scenes, but the music. take test drive, for example (because i’ve already talked a lot about the downed dragon). all the tension is gone. everything that made it a good scene is gone. it’s an absurdity and the end???????? i’m actually so mad. they took out everything important about it.

the scene in which hiccup is testing out toothless’ prosthetic is also stupid. he just puts it on and the next second he’s flying. none of that doubt he shows in the original scene, none of the wondering he does, as if he’s thinking “wait, i can fly again”, he just knows. hate it. (why's his head so biggg😭)

next, the dragon nip. why the hell would they change the dragon nip to an allergy to dandelions? how stupid is that? and for what? what was the purpose? i don’t get it. it isn’t necessarily a bad change, but it is a stupid one. in the series, they state that blue oleanders are poisonous to dragons, but adding an allergy that every species of dragon shares is just dumb. at least to me.

now, the fight that hiccup and stoick have when he tells his father about the nest. why the fuck would they feel the need to add valka to that scene???? valka isn’t mentioned by name in the original film, she’s almost never mentioned. and now they felt like having stoick say: “why would your mother think about you?” was a good idea. and it isn’t because we know that valka is the same as hiccup. she sees dragons as more than vicious beasts, and that makes the fight, or at least that line delivery, stupid (thanks to @bdragonspam on insta for the info, she has a nice reel pinned on her page that explains how she lived the live action, go check her out!). now, someone tell me if this is true because i have no idea, but is it true that now they have made astrid to have a conflict with the society she lives in?? like, a feminist issue? (because i think i saw someone saying something like that but i’m not sure) this leads me to my next point, the scene in which the red death starts suctioning air to try and trap stormfly and astrid, WHY WOULD THEY MAKE ASTRID JUMP OUT OF HER DRAGON.

like, girlie pop, not even stormfly is able to fight against the red death and suddenly you’re inside her mouth fighting her teeth?????? make that make sense, please. plot armor, i suppose, but stupid nevertheless. i guess they made it so that she doesn’t need to depend on hiccup but again, WHY????? (also, please someone confirm if she truly wants to become chief in the movies?)because that is dumb. astrid has never shown interest in becoming chief in the original movies. i don’t get why they have to add things like this to her character, this coming from nothing issue that she never had in the og films, more so issues she didn’t need. because, and this is just my personal opinion, astrid isn’t a character i enjoy. this is just a personal bias, but if i have something good to say about her character is that she has always been a strong woman, who did what she wanted. she didn’t ask for permission, she just did it. and she was great representation of a strong character, who could also be thoughtful (at times). what they’ve turned her into is just stupid. they’ve taken away her power and her strength and turned her into a feminist plot device just to add more social issues within the film. (in case this is true, but honestly, i can believe it is, knowing what they've done to the rest of the movie)
i think that’s all i had to say just about the film itself. i am mad about this whole thing. i am truly mad. i don’t like that they’re destroying the original films just for money. because if they were made out of affection towards the originals, they would have put a lot more thought into it. a lot more care. and i overall hate how it’s the people that have never watched the originals saying that it is “the best live action they’ve ever seen” because it is objectively not. it’s the casual fans, the influencers the ones that are ruining this for the people that truly like the films. and they don’t care, because they don’t care about the franchise. they just care about the brand deals and their five minutes of fame. and i really hope it pays off for them. because for the people that enjoy these films as more of an entertainment, the people that have grown with these films, this is just a monstrosity.
anyways, so so sorry for the long post and i hope everyone that doesn’t like the live action has a great day!!!
and to the live action fans that commented on my last post, if you like it, good for you. you're not going to change my mind, and to me, you're the one in the wrong. you're giving them more reasons to keep ruining a franchise that yeah, maybe wasn't perfect, but it was good. people enjoyed it the way it was. and please, please, if you are going to see it in theaters, if you're going to give them the money they're so desperately wanting, do not interact with my page. this is obviously not for you. this is for the people that care about this franchise. and you're clearly not one of them.
to the rest, thanks for reading, and i hope this isn't too long or too boring.

I finally watched the wild robot and it was beautiful just like the httyd trilogy
This is definitely my favorite movie of the year. There is so much in it that reminds of the httyd trilogy and everything why I love it so much. Roz, Brightbill and Fink are an extraordinary family but they love each other so much it’s heartwarming. But if I am honest Fink is the best fox character we ever got, he’s fun, shows emotions and has his own character development and personality. He’s the best character in the entire movie. But I can’t forget about Brightbill and Rozs Mother-Son Releationship, which was really beautiful and meaningful just like Hiccup and Toothless‘ Friendship, but it is still something different because Roz and Brightbill are mother and child to each other. Also Brightbill was as duckling just adorable. All the wild animals were also really entertaining but I think my favorite of them was Pinktail with her babys, which’s jokes were the funniest. Especially when one of them was predicted death. Also I really loved the art style, it’s like Puss in Boots2 but expanded. In my opinion the wild robot, the httyd-trilogy and Puss in Boots the last wish are DreamWorks greatest movies. Seeing Toothless, Alex, Marty, Puss in Boots, Shrek, Donkey and Fiona again in the Intro was like meeting old friends.
Little spoiler: In the end it reminds me a bit of the httyd3 ending but it the end comes a bit random. Still good but not better than the ending to dreamworks greatest trilogy, which was made by the same guys.

Alternate Ideas For Wish Granted 📝
The story is inching closer to the end, and after 1 year of writing and planning this AU, not exactly everything I thought of was put into this. So, I'd like to share some concepts that ended up getting changed or left out altogether!
✨The original idea for this AU was going for a more serious/classic Disney feel like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, ect. But the more I wrote, it ended up not feeling it. So instead I chose to base it off my favorite Disney era, the Renaissance era!
✨The tone was supposed to be more dramatic, but I like to give people fun ideas and stories, so I ended up making it a huge comedy! 😂 That's part of why I consider it to be the more goofy version out of all the AUs, lol.
✨Flazino was never meant to be a major character. In fact, he was supposed to be sent into the dungeon really early on after Sabor rats him out. Leaving it to be a mystery on why he hadn't returned in a few days. But he got so popular that he ended up being way more important. Glad he has a lot of fans! (Now there's so many Flazinos, lol)
✨Flazi was also going to have a pet messenger owl named Archimedes to complete the reference to The Sword in the Stone, but.....there really wasn't a point to have him in here, so I left him out. Maybe I can design him for you though!
✨Sabino was originally going to pass on, but since Asha had already lost her father, it didn't feel right to add a second death. So he's just fallen ill due to losing his wish.
✨ Cosmic!Star originally looked a lot more animalistic. He kind of looked like Toothless, but with big claws and fangs. There was even a point where grew wings and was a reference to Chernabog more than Dark!Genie.
✨Asha was going to be more upbeat at the start like the canon movie, but after seeing the deleted scenes, I liked the idea of her being a bit more serious to balance out Star, so I went with it. She's got a bit of attitude, but I didn't want to make her a jerk, so she opens up more as the story goes on.
✨Plushie!Star was going to be an actual toy at first.
✨One sequence of Star that didn't get used was when Amaya had Asha and the teens fall to their deaths in the sea, and Star transformed into a giant whale to catch them in his mouth before they hit the water. Unfortunately, nothing ever lead to that...😅
✨Star's personality wasn't upbeat at first. He was actually more timid about the world and Asha helps him to become more confident. But I LOVED the goofy and fun concept from the art book! And honestly, that fit way more to me. And now he's a big ball of energy everyone loves! 😂
✨Also, the other idea was to have Star flirt with Asha from the start for comedy. He was gonna more like Naveen! But I thought it would be part of his character arc to learn what love is instead and he slowly realizes it.
He also fell for Asha first in this version, but I ended up reversing it cause I think it's funny that Asha has fallen so hard for Star that she's internally crashing out. 😂
✨ Flazino x Dahlia (Dahlzino) was just gonna be a background ship, and I hadn't given it that much thought at the time I began. But the more I wrote them together, the more I loved their dynamic, and their moments and AAAAAAA!!! 😍 Now they're my second favorite ship to write in here! (Tired x Energetic just fits so well for them!)
✨The crush was going to be one-sided on Dahlia's side.
✨Dahlia also had more uh....suggestive dialogue when it came to flirting with Flazino. It was funny, but I don't think it works in the story anymore. Its a more family friendly story. Besides, its funnier that Flazino just doesn't pay attention when he's getting hit on most of the time. 😂
✨I did consider using Magnifico's canon backstory as the reason he's evil in this AU. But instead I chose to just let him be a power hungry king since its more fun to write. He's CHOSEN this path himself
✨Alongside Monster!Magnifico, I've heavily considered having Dragon!Amaya in here as a double trouble final boss. I'm having second thoughts though. It might be a bit too much...
✨ Charo was going to remain unchanged, until I got inspired @annymation's lynx idea with Bravo, so I wanted to spice mine up too. And I went with an African lynx so it wouldn't look too similar to other versions. That's how we got Sabor!
✨ The 7 Teens were going to be removed until I started coming up with ways to put twists on their personalities. Then I decided to bring them in one by one so they get developed more. That way they actually mattered to the story!
✨ The Julia Michaels version A Wish Worth Making was going to play during the credits, just like the movie. But now the Sabino version will be played in the final chapter. Just before we get our book closing ending. I'm actually going to use "Something That I Want" from Tangled, since its more upbeat.
✨ Lastly, Star originally had no family. But since there are countless stars in the sky, I figured SOME of them had to be relatives. Plus I hadn't seen anyone give Starboy a family at the time. Now he's got a big family he can no longer see often...
And that's all cut content! Feel free to use some of these ideas if you have a rewrite of your own in mind! 😉

HAPPY DRAGON AGE DAY
Conniving Crows, Wicked Watchers, Lustful Lords, Vivacious Veil Jumpers, Wild Wardens, and Shrewd Shadow Dragons!
Me: THANK YOU SO MUCH EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU FOR FILLING OUT MY SURVEY! You: Lady, what are you talking about? Me: A couple weeks ago you filled out my survey! You: Oh yeah, whatever happened with that?
Well, let me tell you, good internet people!
Dragon Age: The Veilguard in “One Word”:
If I had a nickel for every "Fun, but..." or "Pretty, but..." responses, I would have a lot of nickels. "Fun but not Dragon Age" was my personal favorite.
If you don't see your verbatim response here, that's because there was 650 of you. And I had to take some liberties with verbiage here.
What were your Overall Impressions of Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
What did you like the MOST about Veilguard?
What did you HATE about Veilguard?
Ho, nelly, you guys.
186 (>28%!) of you used the “Other” box to expand on your ideas (which is part of why this graph is so uhgly) but I appreciate every single one of you sharing your thoughts with me.
19 (2.9%) of you said something pertaining to “The Writing” even though that wasn’t an option
112 (17%!) of you mentioned (at least one of) the words: shallow, pale, child-locked, darkness, nuance, choice, conflict, empty, sanitized, or (my personal favourite) toothless.
Some “Hated” Honorable Mentions:
“Neve’s Hat”
Fuck off her fascinator is fascinating
“Not Being able to Swim”
I read it before and I still laughed; this one is the real MVP
The Death of Varric
☹
The one person who said “Harding”
I will fight you
The TWO People who said “Too many puzzles”
Bitch is this Taash? How did you get access to this???
**Shout out to the people who pointed out I spelled DIALOGE wrong, yeah I know sorry I’m an idiot
If Veilguard were to have a DLC, which Companion Characters would you want to see return the most?
I find it SO interesting that I asked for 5, and there were 5 VERY CLEAR winners...
(Cole, Dorian, Fenris, Merrill, Zevran, by a veritable landslide; there’s over 100 votes between the lowest – Merrill (284), and the next highest – Cassandra (177))
To those of you who can’t read: the HoF, Hawke, and the Inquisitor are NOT Companion Characters.
Also, to the one person who responded: “No one deserves to be dragged through that” I see you.
*I did not have time to collate the data supplied in “Other” but I think there’s a pretty obvious winner here
And now, if a “Keep” DLC were to be made, which choices do YOU think are the most important to have?
Before we jump into that, I would just like to say how little these answers differ; despite my open ended question a LOT of people wrote the same things.
Some of you, bless your little hearts, explained your choices like im a dumb bitch who hasn’t been living in the wiki and played each game 2/3/5 times. Like I would be doing this and not know what Orzammar or the Architect is. Bless your little worm spirits you’re so adorable.
Every person who said “Inquisitors Class” followed it up with (weird I know sorry uwu im so weird im sorry) like… guys. You know…. You are ALLOWED to have OPINIONS. And you’re not weird there was like 6 of you. You're not alone.
To the EVERYTHING/ALL OF IT people; I see you.
Four people were brave enough to admit they couldn’t remember anything, and 55 people didn’t write ANYTHING.
Behold, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat:
Circle Fate: Fate of the Chantry Circles after DAI
DAI Wardens: Wardens exiled/accepted in DAI
Divine: Who you chose for the Divine (DAI)
Fade Fate: The Fate of the person you left in the fade in DAI
Mage/Templar: The outcome of the Mage/Templar conflict (not differentiated between Inquisition/2)
Southern Rulers: All three Rulers of Southern Thedas; Ferelden, Orlais, & Orzammar
The Well: Who Drank Mythal's Bathwater (dont kink shame me)
Any answer with less than 5 responses got taken out for brevity and are listed below:
(2) Nothing Cuz they destroyed the South, (1) ANYTHING!!!!!, (1) fuck you (bioware) for disregarding the entire lore of the first few games, (1) I think the most interesting things are the smaller stuff you don't expect to carry over.
(2) Andraste's Urn, (2) Avernus (research), (1) Awakening companions fates, (2) Calpernia's Fate, (3) Cass/Tranquility, (2) Clan Lavellan Status, (1) Cullen/Lyrium, (2) DA:O Dalish Clan, (1) DA2 Isabela, (2) DA2 Qunari Plot outcome, (1) Dagna (Magic School), (1) Danarius, (1) Disband/Keep Inquisition, (2) Faded for Her Result, (3) Hawke Siblings Fate, (2) Inquisition disbanded actual consequences, (1) Inquisition Support of Nevarra or Tevintrer (josephine war table quest), (4) Inquisitors Class, (1) Iron Bull, (1) Isabela, (1) Paragon of her Kind (Golems), (1) Prisoner at Ostagar, (1) Rule of 3, (1) Save/Stop Solas, (1) Sha-Brytol dwarves, (1) Shale, (4) Solas/Inky Approval, (1) Solassan Implications, (1) Solavellan Vallaslin, (1) Soldier's Peak, (2) Sten, (2) Zevran/Darker Crows.
To the one person, who commented: “I think the most interesting things are the smaller stuff you don't expect to carry over.” I see you. And I am percolating.
If the Devs/Anyone at BioWare happens to see this, the last question I asked was this:
If you could ask the Devs/Writers of Veliguard one thing, what would it be?
A lot of responses are focused on the lore. More are questioning the narrative & lore decisions & implications of VG. Some are begging for DLC. Some are flat out rude. One is a proposition. But there are a fair amount of people who want to ask you;
‘hope you're okay’
‘How are you holding up?’
‘I hope despite everything you know that your creation is loved and adored.’
‘THANK YOU!!!’
Intelligent fans know the development Hell VG went through to be born. They know corporate culture. They understand there's often more than meets the eye. Fans of Dragon Age know what heavenly good delicious golden content BioWare can make. And they're hungry for it. Take some well deserved rest, and then come back to the table with us, because we cannot wait for more.
A Sappy Little Note:
I have Zero online presence and really expected to get about 100 responses total, and I got 650 (*mind blown emoji*), I wasn’t even able to share it to reddit main (bc of the fvbjvks mods). Most of these responses are from YOU GUYS on good ol’ tumblr.com and Im so weepy about how you all got involved and shared your thoughts with me Thank You SO MUCH.
For those of you who messaged me about the DLC, you are not forgotten. Believe it or not, I have a plan. Watch your inboxes over the next couple days, because I’m going to be prickling your creative brains over the Holidays.
Once more, Thank You All, so so so much for participating. Bare your blade, remain vigilant, and keep an Eye out for The Agents.
