They also smack him and get physical. People don’t do that with weapons. There’s no point in that. And you wouldn’t wanna damage or harm a weapon. But people do smack dogs. They hit their dogs when they don’t behave or do something wrong because harm, pain, and damage will teach it. Just like it teaches him. And they’ll heal so it’s not a concern.

He was trained to obey commands. Just like dogs. He does any little thing he’s told because he’s conditioned with a rewards system. He even has specific command words that trigger compliance. Just like you teach a dog to sit or roll over with trigger words, he has em too. I mean literally, he has a Pavlovian response to said words. And what was the original Pavlov experiment done on? And yeah, he’s protective and reliant on his “owners” like most dogs would be. But like I said, not just a guard dog. A hunting dog. That’s his whole purpose, to hunt for them.

Also, think about how Hydra obtained him. It’s like if a person saw an injured dog in a ditch, brought it to a vet to heal up, then took it home to have as their own pet. Because that’s exactly what they did with him. It’s just the owner was an abusive one.

The entire episode came out while I was busy answering the ask game and I checked it out to respond to this ask properly . But, for future reference: unless it’s a show I’m liveblogging it’s open to spoil.

Okay, so the episode went just like I predicted with Marinette easily forgiven. Even before I saw the whole thing, I saw the collected clips and I could smell the upcoming Marinette validation in the final scenes. And yet, just like this show does time and time again, it's still worse than even what I prepared for. Of course the episode couldn't just be "Marinette gets forgiven without her having to do anything", of course her saying sorry and making reparations aren't just things she does after being forgiven, like she's the one rewarding her victims for their good behavior of forgiving her. No, they had to go even further and end the episode with Marinette's victim coddling her over her "friendship fears".

This episode is so manipulative in how hard it leans on the audience to pity Marinette throughout. Like, seriously, her Lucky Charm calls her the villain? The amount of self-pity there goes way beyond all the other cases of Marinette acting like this that have come before. Little miss “if I make myself miserable asking me to make up for what I did wrong would be cruel” now has her own superpowers take part in her self-flagellation just to make sure no one with the actual right to be mad at her gets there first.

Marinette always does this. She makes a mistake and rather than think of a way to make up for it, she calls herself the worst and whines. “The Lucky Charm pointed her out as the villain” is not Marinette facing consequences or the episode treating her as in the wrong. It’s once again Marinette being her own worst critic whenever she does something wrong, to make sure the audience feels bad for her first and foremost so that they can instantly forgive her even when she never actually learns. “Marinette loves to learn,” my ass. “The villain was me” is just “I’m the worst Guardian” with a new coat of paint.

The important part is that the person with the right to be mad at Marinette, Sublime, had already forgiven her before Marinette even had her little villain realization. Just because a character says something that’s right on paper doesn’t mean it’s being presented as the correct perspective in the episode. It depends on that framing I’ve been harping on about. So, while Sublimation rightfully chewed Marinette out, all the scenes before her Akumatization have her acting entitled, cold and harsh, calling Sublime’s dad a failure and getting on his case for coddling her when he merely offers her a balancing hand and not taking Sublime’s opinions on things into account. In all these scenes, her husband talks calmly while she’s snapping; the writers intend her to come across as misguided or downright unreasonable. This makes it so that her yelling at Marinette comes across as her just being unreasonable again and like we’re meant to see her as being mean, especially because Marinette also looks the saddest in the episode specifically when Sublimation is yelling at her. To further make Sublimation's points worthless, her power to make people the best version of themselves doesn't work on Marinette because she already "perfect". If she's already so perfect, then why does she keep doing this shit?

The only characters calling Marinette out are herself, in her typical “I’m the worst” fashion, and a “jerk-coded” character whose opinion we aren't supposed to respect. This was already visible in the leaked scenes and made it very clear to me that Marinette wouldn’t be suffering any real consequences for what she did, her feeling guilty is meant to be the consequence and punishment. And I was proven correct. When Sublimation is dealt with, no one is mad at Marinette anymore, because being mad at her is what villains do. It doesn’t matter that Marinette claims she was in the wrong because she does it in an overly exaggerated manner that the viewer won’t take seriously. It doesn’t matter that the other characters have a “this is going to end poorly” attitude about Marinette’s nonsense, when they’re clearly pitying Marinette and not her target. It doesn’t matter that Marinette gets called out when the character doing it is the supervillain in an altered state of mind we’re supposed to see as unreasonable.

This episode is so disrespectful towards Sublime. No one voices concern over whether or not she would need to be protected from the downfall of Marinette’s shenanigans, all Tikki, Alya and Trixx are concerned with are that Marinette will come out of this smelling like roses with that “mistakes are an opportunity to earn and Marinette loves to learn” nonsense. Yeah, Marinette loves mistakes because no one is ever concerned with the people those mistakes hurt! Sublime should not be getting treated as a teaching aid in universe, when she’s supposed to be a person Marinette wants to befriend. Like, it’s clear she only wants to befriend Sublime for control freak reasons to make sure she isn’t talking to Adrien behind her back, considering how obsessed she is with that thought, but that is still the stated end goal.

Speaking of, Sublime should not have wanted to be friends with Marinette no matter if Adrien told her she has difficulties making friends, her reaction to Ladybug shattering her legs should not have been “I’m okay!” She should want to stay away from Marinette’s clearly unbalanced ass. She should have been pissed at Ladybug, it was her right. But, no, she couldn’t possibly be upset about any of that because being upset at Marinette is what bad people do and Sublime is a good person and good people always put Marinette’s feelings before their own. It’s a good thing Marinette’s Miraculous Ladybug can fix any damage caused by anyone on the same day a villain fight happens or otherwise she couldn’t have rewarded Sublime and her family for being such good people who forgave her before she could even apologize or make reparations.

What is Marinette teaching kids in this episode? That it’s okay if you fuck up and act like a menace as long as you say “I’m sowwy, I don’t deserve to be our friend”. Still keeping up the trend of teaching kids exactly how to manipulate people into forgiving you, I see.

Now, movie theaters, or drive ins, you will absolutely need to rein him in. James sees these areas as fair game to get a little bit more… hot ‘n heavy. You will need to capture wandering hands and trailing lips, but he’ll reel himself in if you tell him to knock it off seriously. He is a gentleman, after all.

In true private, he loves taking things slow. Treating you to dinner that he lovingly convinced his mom or sister to make because they don’t trust him in the kitchen, and then retiring to the couch to talk and hang out for a few more hours. Having your legs thrown over his so he can massage them, and he even slips you out of your little heeled Mary Jane’s so that he can massage the ache from your feet. Quality time with him is perfect.

When he joins the military, Barnes insists on you being at the train station with him before he’s shipped off each time. He loves seeing your face as the last reminder of home to hold him through till he gets back to New York. As often as he can, Bucky is sending you letters, sometimes with pressed flowers or the wrappers from candy he had. Now if you reward him with a pin up photo, or even just a glamour photo that you managed to scrape the money together for, he’s keeping that photo close to his heart and on his person at all times.

B = Best Friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)

Have you seen him with Steve? This man is a goofy goofball. But that does mean that you need to be good with Steve; they’re a package deal. And if you are good, all three of you are a package deal. He loves to take you dancing and try to set you up with another fella, meanwhile he accepts any of your attempts on getting him a lady.

Bucky would probably end up befriending you in a similar fashion that he did Steve. Neither one of them like bullies, and especially can’t tolerate rude behavior towards women, but James is the only one that could actually do something about it. If he saw some older boys picking on you for anything, he’d step in with no hesitation. Since then, you’ve always rolled with the boys, patching up Steve when he would get into fights, and helping James try to get a date that lasts longer than a night.

C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)

James Buchanan Barnes loves any form of physical affection. He especially enjoyed cuddles at the drive in. Even if he’s not trying to do anything nefarious, Bucky enjoys having you resting on his chest, with his hands tracing invisible shapes along your back. Having you against him in an enclosed space just made him want to hold you close. Besides, it allowed him to protect you against anything that might arise, even your dreams if you happen to fall asleep.

D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)

This might be an unpopular opinion, but Bucky is fantastic at cleaning, not so much cooking. Sure, he can make himself a sandwich, but he prefers when you do it. There’s just something about how you do it, all the proportions are just right for an amazing, and simple food. However, he is cleaning. Especially after he enters the military.

When James is home, he’s making the beds, folding the clothes, doing the washing and hanging it up. He’s cleaning counters and helping with the dishes. Since you’ll end up doing 99% of the cooking, he figures the least he can do is helping with the cleaning up from dinner.

And he most definitely wants to settle down. He would love more than anything to marry you, have little Barnes running around, but he doesn’t want to put you through the horrors of getting that letter with a flag and his dog tags if he doesn’t make it back. So he holds off, as much as he wants you to be his wife, he doesn’t want you to be a widow so young if he can’t make it back to you.

If he absolutely needed to break it off, Bucky is coming to your doorstep and doing it gently, but firmly. There is no way that he will leave you feeling like you are the problem. It may happen because of the rising tensions surrounding the war. As I stated above, I truly believe he wouldn’t marry you until he came back officially from the war because he wants you to be free if he dies away from home.

But he may just break up with you before deploying one last time to spare you the same pain. James lets you think and tell people that he was doing it to be a jerk, because it was easier than trying to convince you other wise. He would much rather you hate him than hate yourself over this.

F = Fiancé(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?)

The man wants to be married! He wants it all. Bucky knew by date number two that he was going to propose to you. He’s a realistic romantic, and wants to be with you for the rest of your lives. During the 30’s, he may just marry you young and throw caution to the wind. The 40’s however, he’s more hesitant to do so.

James would definitely go to his mom, and ask for a family ring to propose with. His grandmother’s or even her own. Something to bring you into the Barnes family. The entire day would be just about you two. Retracing the steps of your first date; a walk into downtown Brooklyn, going to that little diner on the corner, and a stroll through the park. A beautiful day, with just a few clouds that were brilliantly white. Later in the evening when you two are in the park, he lets you walk ahead of him before dropping down on one knee, and pulling out the ring box.

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)

Dis just a big ole teddy bear, yes he is. James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes would rather die than hurt you. He holds you as if the most delicate porcelain doll, protecting you from all the evils of the world. Not only is he a big, buff military man that is the ultimate gentleman, Bucky is just genuinely a good person. He protects those he cares about.

Only in private though, will he be emotionally gentle and vulnerable. James is, honestly, quite emotional he just doesn’t show it. But when you two are alone, that is when you can get him talking. Fears, insecurities and worries are released when Barnes is in the safety of your arms.

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)

If he doesn’t get a hug from you the second you see each other, or when you depart from each other, James will full on pout. I’m talking bottom lip stuck out, crossing his arms, and turning away from you. The only way to rectify this situation is to hug him close, for several minutes.

Bucky loves hugs anytime. Just anytime he can wrap his arms around you is a good time. In the apartment he shares with his sister and mother while you’re helping to make dinner, he’ll wrap his arms around your waist from behind, more than likely being in the way for someone. At the movies or a drive in, his arm is wrapped round your shoulder to pull you in close.

His hugs are the highlight of dating him. Even before the military beefed him up a bit, his hugs are so strong and secure. Growing up as the male of his household, he needed to be strong. Which means that years of reassuring and taking care of his sister and mom, you get to reap the rewards of.

Earliest? Second date. It’s also the same time that he realizes that he wants to marry you. Keep in mind, these were different times. People got married faster, younger, and longer. So, yeah. Second date, he knew then if he was going to put in the effort for the rest of his life.

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)

Honestly, I’m not sure which way this could go. Bucky is quite secure in his relationship with you, so there would be no reason for him to even get jealous. He probably doesn’t care if some jerk is trying to make a move on you with him nearby, but that’s on the other guy. It has nothing to do with you. He’s so confident in you and your relationship that another man can try to take you from him, but he knows you.

However, if you are really close with another man, talking constantly, and hanging out together without him, James will have a talk with you about it. Communicate with him about stuff like this. Just a simple letting him know about it, maybe let him meet the guy few times, and he’ll be okay.

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)

Bucky’s kisses feel like having a warm cup of cocoa on the coldest of winter nights. It should come as no surprise that he’s a furnace, which helps on the hugging and cuddling aspect. But he truly imparts that warmth to you when he kisses you.

While he, of course, loves to kiss you on the lips, this man’s favorite place to kiss you? It’s your hands. A little weird, but hear me out; Bucky pick’s you up for your first date, going to a dance hall and dinner. He keeps his hands in his pockets, maintaining a respectful distance between you two as you walk, with him obeying the sidewalk rule. James opens the door, takes your coat, and just genuinely is being so sweet to you. And when he asks you to that first dance, he holds his hand out for yours. When you do, Barnes is pulling you towards the floor, and kissing the tops of your hands.

For himself, he loves when you kiss him on his chest, specifically over his left pec. It’s one of the reasons he keeps your photo there, because that is where you kiss him. James likes to think it’s because you are trying to kiss his heart. But it could very well be because that’s where it’s convenient to kiss him given his size.

James helped raise Rebecca, his little sister; he loves children. He would love to be an uncle, and he’d love to be a father. Bucky just screams “fun uncle” energy.

Now, if he had a son, oh that is going to be an interesting childhood. Teaching him how to be a gentleman, how to properly treat the women in his life, starting with his mother. Showing him how men are suppose to act. He is teaching all things that he wished someone had taught him, which includes what not to do.

If he had a daughter…? You best believe that girl is going to grow up strong and confident. If his son is growing up knowing how to treat others like a man, his daughter is growing up knowing what it’s like to be treated correctly by a man. Don’t mistake it though, she’s gonna be the toughest little girl on the playground, who will beat any boy at the monkey bars, in the prettiest dress.

M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)

A couple of possibilities come to mind. If you’re still in the early stages of dating, i.e. not married, and he’s got the day off, he’ll call the night before to ask if he can take you out for the morning. Brings you flowers and takes you for pancakes at the diner down the way.

If you’re not married and he’s got work, chances are James is dropping something by your place of residence so that you know he’s thinking about you. A flower he found on the way, or a letter that he hand delivers. It’s very similar to what happens when he’s away in the army. Even though you aren’t with each other physically, you both hold close the momentos and letters you have given.

But if you’re married, and he’s not away at a barrack, he likes to wake up a little earlier than he needs to just to watch you sleep a bit. Sometimes he can avoid waking you up, until he’s kissing you goodbye, and telling you he loves you. Other times, James isn’t that lucky and he wakes you up. But that just means that, if you’re feeling up to it, you two can have breakfast together before he heads in for work.

N = Nights (How are nights spent with them?)

Same parameters as before. If you two aren’t married but dating, he’s politely walking you to your door, kissing you goodnight, and going back home.

If you guys are married, Bucky is enjoying a quiet night in with you. Coming home to a nice dinner just waiting for him, and his beautiful wife who made it for him. He doesn’t even care about the fact that he’s doing the dishes later, he’s just glad to be home. And James loves relaxing on the couch with a glass of wine or a finger of whiskey with you on his lap. If you’re not best friends to begin with, maybe you got introduced by a mutual friend who wants to play matchmaker, he’d be pretty forthcoming. There is no way that Bucky would hide his current best girls, his mother and sister, from hopefully the one that will take the number one spot. Things like his home life and family, Steve, and easy things like this are reveled pretty quickly.

However, stuff like his fears, that waits till later, like fourth or fifth date when you two are going steady.

P = Patience (How easily angered are they?)

Barnes is quite patient. He very rarely ever gets angry, but he does get frustrated. Like if someone just wont stop messing with either of you while you’re out trying to have a date, Bucky will bark at the fellow to leave you both alone. If someone actually touches you, he’s scraping.

That’s with the outside world, with you, he is ever so patient. This man will never raise his voice towards you in anger, nor put his hands on you. Not to say that Bucky won’t go for a walk or be alone for a bit so he can calm down before doing anything he might regret, but he vowed to protect you the second you agreed to that first date.

In the beginning, James kept a pocket notebook that he would write in sneakily every time you mentioned liking something. Jewelry styles you liked, or flowers. If you didn’t like a certain smell or flavor, it was written. As time passed, this would all be committed to memory. But he made sure to try and remember everything. Occasionally, even heroes fall. Bucky would forget that you preferred pancakes to waffles, or that you couldn’t stand the smell of lavender. But anything important, anniversaries, birthdays, allergies; there is no way Bucky is forgetting those.

R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)

Your first date, when he took you dancing. That night will forever be magical. The way you dressed, how you did your hair. When he got you on the floor, a slow song had just started up, which meant that he could just sway with you. His hands on your waist and yours on his shoulders. And then when a swing tune played, Bucky could dance with you a bit more lively. That would remain a memory he revisited often, especially when he was behind enemy lines.

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)

Fiercely. James is willing to do anything and everything for you. Nothing is off the table if it means defending your honor and safety.

He’s protecting you physically most of the time. Making sure that you don’t walk home alone in the dark. Obeying the sidewalk rule. Protecting you when you are with him and Steve getting drinks.

Bucky just needs someone to protect him emotionally. Reassure him. And hug him close after a long day away. He’s a big man that doesn’t have those muscles for no reason. But everyone needs protection, no matter how different.

Every day tasks, he’s constantly doing little things to make sure that you know you’re appreciated. Fresh picked flowers, small little notes, a new book. You can tell him not to waste his money, but he tells you the same thing every time. “It’s not wasted if it’s being used for my doll. Only the best for my best girl.”

Dates and anniversaries? Bucky is planning, and you have no say. Okay, you may have some say. But he loves being able to tell you what time to be ready, and what style to wear, while he takes care of the rest. He always makes sure you are treated like a princess, and never feels like he takes you for granted.

Gifts are personalized. James loves to get you something that he has heard you talking about for a while, sometimes waiting till a date or anniversary. Other times he gives it to you that day when he gets home. His other favorite gift is to pay Steve to make a portrait of you, one that takes him days to finish, but it’s worth it all the same.

U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)

Bucky has more than once, gotten so lost in a book, that he has completely ignored you for a while. It doesn’t happen often, but it has happened. Notably, this typically happens when you guys go out on a picnic date and he brings a book to read to you. He legit has trailed off in the middle of the sentence when he’s reading aloud to you, because he’s getting so invested in the story.

V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)

Just a tad. James really focuses on his hair but that’s about it. He washes his face everyday. The muscles he attainted are just maintained through regular labor throughout the day. All in all, unless he’s in a suit, military or civilian, he doesn’t care what he looks like.

W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)

Absolutely, this man is counting down the minutes till he can see you again. Bucky doesn’t care if he looks desperate, he loves staring at your picture if he can’t get the real deal.

Bucky loves when you volunteer to hang out with him and Steve. Having both of his favorite people in the same place, it’s perfect. Going to the movies, or going to the dance hall where you do make sure to squeeze in a dance with Steve.

Bucky couldn’t stand people who read books out loud, loudly when in public. He would much rather read the books himself. Not hear about it from someone else. Except you. He’s okay with that.

I see him as a white T-shirt and boxers type man. In the wintertime, you might convince him to wear a pair of pants, but if you two are married, he’s using that warmth he naturally exudes to his advantage. Curling around you, bringing you in close. I think part of it may have to do with a.) a lack of distinction in recent fandom culture between "Fandom" and "Audience" (alongside other recent fandom culture attitudes as well) and b.) so much of Rick's brand is built up exactly on parasocial behavior that a lot of fans get caught up in it. Re: The first, more recent fandom culture tends to treat "Fandom" and "General audience" as wholly equivocal. Because of this, the concepts tend to bleed into each other in a way we haven't quite seen before fandom became mainstream, and as a result we get a kind of Worst Of Both Worlds situation - a bunch of very passionate fans who have no community, create little to no fanworks themselves (only consume), and only engage at a surface level with the source material. Their only "fandom" community hub is the source material and official social media and they don't have a concept of how to exist outside it, unlike folks who are more used to older fandom culture and are self-sufficient. They have the passion and identity of classic fandom, but none of the depth, and so threats to the source material feel like threats to their community as a whole. They also just don't seem to understand that different subsections of the deeper fandom community are engaging with the material on an entirely different level, or they don't understand why they're doing that. They see no need to because they're never actually engaging with the community or source material beyond a surface level. Functionally they don't have a community. And mainstream media is actively encouraging this because it's profitable for them - they're reaping all of the rewards of fandom, minus the fact that because of the lack of actually community and support structures the entire "fandom" will only have a shelf life the same length of the source material. But at the same time this means they don't have to worry about quality or etc, because this extremely passionate side of their audience will just take anything thrown at them and it'll phase out almost immediately. It doesn't need to be good, it just needs to elicit some kind of reaction on social media. Any publicity is good publicity type stuff.

This lack of true community plus the parasocial emphasis the RR company has tends to make these types of fans double-down. Rick and co. are explicitly advertised as being both part of the "community" and integral to it. And when they've built Rick (and co) up as this moral paragon critical to both part of their identity they're very passionate about and what little of a community they have, any attack on him feels like an attack on themself. Particularly when so much of the publicity and marketing surrounding Rick right now is about his alleged activism when a lot of the criticism about him and the series is actively calling that into question with his unaddressed internalized bigotries. Acknowledging that what Rick is saying and promoting himself as versus his writing and actions don't always line up and pointing out the bigotry present in his work forces people to acknowledge and think about performative activism, which can make a lot of people very uncomfortable! It's forcing them to acknowledge "Oh, even if I'm saying all the right words and calling myself an ally, I am not immune to being bigoted if I don't address my internalized biases. My actual behavior matters." and that especially can feel like a personal attack. Especially in today's western landscape of media consumption being viewed as a moral act in itself.

I suspect this is why a lot of the retaliation against criticism of Rick and the franchise right now is "Why can't you just have FUN? You're just trying to hate for views. Don't take it so seriously! It's not that deep!" - they not only have no interest in engaging deeper in the material, but don't understand why others would, and doing so jeopardizes the foundations of what they consider the fandom. They can't fathom anybody legitimately having these criticisms (particularly not anybody who would ACTUALLY consider themself a "fan" - because their perception of "fan" is themself) because they're so resistant to digging deeper into the media/source material or the concept that anyone would for any legitimate reason (because as long as they keep it as "it's not that deep!!! it's just fun! just enjoy it you wet blanket!!!!" and take things at their word, they can feel secure in that performative aspect and not have to unpack it), and acknowledging that those criticisms exist and are valid means they have to acknowledge the franchise is flawed and imperfect, so they presume the claims are entirely superficial and the individual has ulterior motives rather than, yknow, doing what fandom does: diving deeper.

on punishment. tw: dom-shaming

so this post is going around on some blogs i follow and i kind of want to discuss it, without adding to a post that has some fair and reasonable points:

in context, the bulk of this post is about training a submissive partner to take on some behaviors, or cease others, and how the author believes praise/rewards are the most effective + ethical way to do this. buuuut this doesn't sit right with me.

there's definitely a need 4 discussion with some subs about how their desires are not punishment-worthy or guilt-worthy. + much to be said about the psychological efficacy of behavioral change methods. i think it's probable that many subs have a negative relationship with punishment for good reasons, and in particular i think the OP here may have personal issues with the topic, which they are fully entitled to.

however, acting as if this is the best practice is, imo, harmful and unacceptable. i'll be addressing the issues i have with it under the cut; if you don't want to see discourse/philosophy, don't click :)

your sub is not your child: "training" is an entirely conscious and mutual decision. the post does mention this, but it also shames doms who are inclined to use punishment as a training method. let me be clear on how i feel here: the efficacy does not matter. you are adults. if you mutually decide punishment is an acceptable way to train, it's your brain.

you know what motivates me the most to change my behavior? being treated like someone who knows what they are doing.

"an adult punished for stealing will learn to steal more effectively." consider that the adult is making the choice to steal regardless, whether out of necessity or due to personal motivation. a sub who wants to be trained is not an adult who doesn't want to be stopped from stealing. both of these points are needlessly infantilizing to the submissive.

"Your submissive is no different from any of those examples." yes the fuck they are. your examples are a dog, a child, and a person the state views as a criminal. if your submissive is "no different" from those examples, you need to examine your shit as an adult and remand yourself to some form of personal growth.

"why would you want to rule through fear." because the fear is fun. lol. alternatively, doms who want to rule through pure, earnest, and unwilling fear are not doms, they're abusers. no matter the level or relationship involved in behavioral training for subs, the end goal is mutual fulfillment. if you don't like what others do in their bedrooms, or their 24/7 dynamics...simply don't participate.

"kill the cop in your head." okay. i already did that--i killed the part of my brain that moralized the things i wanted in my dynamic. i killed the part of my brain that designated punishers as violent, cruel, and unstable and the people who want to be punished as naive, weak, and child-like.

listen. my goal is not to say this person is wrong, or that their feelings towards punishment in a power dynamic or a training dynamic are invalid. they are very much not!! my issue is the dom-shaming and sub-infantilizing rhetorics behind what should be a personal exploration, not a sweeping, moralistic generalization about what consenting adults should do in their relationships.

if punishment in a training dynamic makes you feel unsafe, that's okay. don't do it.

if punishment in a training dynamic makes you feel safe, that's great. do it.

if your partner disrespects your position on either side, or intentionally trains you in a way they know you dislike, they are a bad partner and that is a separate issue.

punishment, for those who choose to utilize it in a training situation, is:

a morally neutral action. it would be immoral if it was done without consent. that is an issue with consent, not punishment.

agreed upon by both parties. see above.

sometimes pleasant: in this case, it may be sexually fulfilling, which makes it more of a soft punishment/"funishment." it becomes either a safe, predictable outcome for bratting, which can promote feelings of trust in the dynamic, or just unpleasant enough that the partner being "trained" prefers not to do it most of the time.

sometimes unpleasant: not sexually gratifying, perhaps, but still a reinforcement of the dynamic. again, a way to promote safety and predictability. your dom isn't slacking. your dom cares about your behavior. your dom's attention is on what you do, good or bad, because they're invested in you.

a way to reclaim feelings of guilt, make them safe, and deconstruct them. i cannot stress this enough. guilt over "bad" behavior (that i as an adult know i am allowed to do, but want to be controlled in) is not always a safe emotion for me to be alone with. as someone with religious trauma, as someone who grew up in a religious, corporal-punishment household, being punished for "bad behavior" is vital to my mental health in a dynamic. it lets me process guilt and shame, however "undeserved," in a safe way with a clear ending. it gives me closure. whether that makes me damaged or not, it also gets me the fuck off, so idc. there's a reason i prefer RACK over SSC these days, and it's because moralized definitions of the word "sane" are rampant.

not your business.

please, please make an effort to stop moralizing over what adults get up to in the bedroom. your dynamic is a personal choice that does not reflect on your moral value. i would normally have no issue with this except that OP is phrasing their opinion as a "guide" or "how-to." here is a list of true things, or affirmations, if you felt as unsettled by this as i did:

what goes on in your head is more important than psych articles.

you are allowed to choose how to motivate yourself to change your behavior.

doms are not controlling, abusive, or bootlickers for enjoying using punishment as a motivator.

subs are not damaged, oppressed, or naive for being motivated by punishment.

it does not mean you need to grow as a person if you want to balance punishment and reward in your dynamic.

mental safety is more important than psychological efficacy.

guilt and shame are things you are allowed to process however you want.

i just really need people to stop pushing dom-shaming narratives under the guise of pop psychology + holistic wellness language, pls and thanks. everyone thinks they're an expert nowadays, but the only expert on your mental and sexual wellbeing is you--and hopefully your partner(s) are willing to develop the same expertise :)

Your life with Fyodor had been good, as good as a life with a kidnapper could be, but you would never admit that out loud, it would be too hard a blow to your dignity.

At first everything was hell, Fyodor was the definition of cruel, it took you months to be able to get out of the 4 walls where he locked you up, in complete darkness. It screwed up your eyesight, your sleep and your overall health, physical and mental. He at least fixed those problems, paid for your eye surgery, gave you vitamin D supplements, helped you by fixing your sleep schedule, etc.

It wasn't so bad, except that not all the issues could be fixed, your mental health was horrible, it still is, you doubted he could fix that.

Before you had all that help Fyodor gave you, you had to change your behavior, you were always a fighter and with Fyodor it would be no exception. The turning point of your behavior was the night you tried to escape. He caught you, as punishment he broke both your legs and your fingers, he also left you in complete isolation, you don't know for how long. Since that punishment, you never disobeyed Fyodor again, not intentionally at least.

As time went by, and when he saw that your meek behavior was not a lie, he began to give you more liberties. One of the most important for you was the freedom to go outside, obviously accompanied by Fyodor.

Also, with that freedom to go out, you realized that Fyodor liked to treat you like a doll. Every time he allowed you to go out he was the one who dressed you, you had no voice or vote in that.

On those outings, you realized that the place you were in was Russia, you didn't know specifically which part. Before arriving in Russia, you had never seen snow in person, so it was beautiful the first time.

Today was one of those days that Fyodor allowed you to go out.

He dressed you in warm clothes and took you to a coffee shop. It was nicer than you thought it would be, not only because you went outside, but because your talks with Fyodor were pleasant.

By the time you left the coffee shop, it was getting dark, but you convinced Fyodor to go to a local bookstore and buy some books. It wasn't for you to read it (you didn't understand Russian and Fyodor had never tried to teach you so you couldn't communicate with others), it was for Fyodor to read it to you, it was an activity that, surprisingly, you enjoyed very much. You left the bookstore with a book of poems whose cover caught your attention.

Walking on your way home you heard high-pitched meowing coming from an alley, you stopped your steps and, consequently, to Fyodor, who was holding your hand.

"What is it, милый?"

"I heard meowing." Your gaze did not move from the alley.

You let go of Fyodor's hand and headed down the alley, Fyodor followed you closely until you reached a cardboard box lying on the ground.

You bent down and opened the box to find an orange furred cat, it was about the size of your hand and very thin. You wondered what kind of horrible person had abandoned such a cat.

You petted it and the cat reacted affectionately, rubbing its head against your hand. You laughed at the action and turned your head to see Fyodor standing behind you, still standing. "Please, Fedya, let's keep him."

Fyodor wasn't a big fan of cats, or animals in general, it wasn't that he hated them, but he preferred not to have pets. But there you were, begging him for an abandoned cat, and, well, you were being on excellent behavior, so he needed to give you a reward, right?

"Okay, but you'll be the one to take care of it." You nodded quickly as you grabbed the cat, pulled him against your chest, and covered him up as best you could with your coat.

The two of you walked out of the alley, you were petting the cat's little head as you smiled. Fyodor just looked at you, appreciating how cute you looked when you were happy. He thought that, perhaps, he could do more things to see that smile of yours more often.

Fandom Problem #8356:

As I started to rewatch shows, I came to realize that a good chunk of them actually have the flimsiest redemptions for characters ever, and people just accept it and eat it up like it’s Zuko-level redemption…just because it’s with their favorite character. Now, I’m not saying that you can't like problematic characters, but it gets tiresome to watch people just flaunt the true meaning of an actual good redemption all the time just because it’s personally about their favorite character. It gives me the impression that people don’t want actual good redemptions, they just want redemption benefits.

What do I mean by this? I mean that it doesn’t really matter to them if the character changes or goes on a path of growth or not. They want them to be “redeemed”, just so their favorite character can get the perks of “being a good person”. They want them to gain brownie points so they can have said character be handed everything to them on a silver platter, without having to actually WORK for anything (even in some cases, they want “a redemption” for their character out of pity).

Here are some examples: OMG! Character A was a dick to everyone who crossed their path, even when it wasn’t the other characters’ fault? That’s ok, because Character A has “redemption”, so their victims HAVE to put up with them and forgive all of their bull because they’re at least “trying”. Said characters even HAVE to befriend them.

OMG! Character A has done terrible things to their LI (the person that they’re supposed to love and care about) and treated them like garbage even before they were in the endgame? That’s ok, because Character A has “redemption”, so their LIs feelings don’t matter at all because Character A is “trying”. The LI doesn’t deserve to be acknowledged as their own person nor as their own character. They’re just a shiny trophy for Character A to have for “good behavior”. Extra points if said LI is the same gender!

OMG! This character committed many crimes that they would in real life be arrested for? Aw that’s alright, because Character A has “redemption”, so they can get away with things like assault, neglect, abuse, harassment, stealing, attempted murder, and all that good stuff without any consequence or callouts at all. You have to forgive and forget!

OMG! This character tried to destroy the world for the pettiest reason(s) and didn’t even CARE? That’s perfectly fine, because they have “REDEMPTION”. They’re “TRYING” to correct their wrongdoings! No one is perfect! Not to mention it’s just a show! It doesn’t matter if the redemption feels earned or not, the whole fictional world revolves solely around them just because “they’re trying!”. Everyone needs to hold Character A’s hand through this, and if you don’t you're suddenly the bad guy who’s being petty.

People need to know the difference between “redemption” and “redemption acts”. If people like problematic and chaotic characters, that’s your right. My issue with this though is the misuse of redemption arcs as a whole and the point of them. They’re meant to better a character, not be used as a “reward” for being a tragic/likable character. You can’t have both ways, even Character A’s a chaotic/problematic/terrible person and you love them that way anyways, or they’re a chaotic/problematic/terrible person and they need to change. You can’t deny by wanting both, you want a morally bad character to get good things just because you like said character.

And stop being dicks to people just because they don’t like your problematic characters.
