He stopped in the doorway, the sight of her tear-streaked face twisting something deep within him. He’d faced horrors across universes, but nothing had ever prepared him for this: seeing her so vulnerable, so broken.

Seeing her look so painfully young and scared, so achingly familiar.

Her eyes. He was sure he would never forget them, wet, wide and scared. Something inside of him broke at the sight, and he took a ragged breath, his trembling hands twitching to hold her.

None of the monsters, not the loss he’d faced, not the fear, the pain... nothing cut as deep as seeing those tears on her face, a reminder of all she had lost at such a tender age.

Her wide, tear-bright eyes pulled at memories he rarely allowed himself to touch. Her small frame, curled and trembling, reminded him of a girl he hadn’t been able to save.

Donna.

He hadn’t been able to save her. She was his first failure, and he’d carried that guilt, that ache, like a wound that refused to close.

And now here was America, this brave, remarkable girl who needed him. But he couldn’t keep himself from trembling, afraid that history might repeat itself—that, despite everything, he could lose her, too. That she would become another ghost haunting his failures.

Yet, he couldn’t keep away from her. Even knowing how much it could hurt, her presence soothed an ache so deep, so woven in him, he hadn’t realised how much it had hurt. Until her.

“Ste—Stephen...” she voiced, her voice shaken, broken.

His mind was taken from that horrible night by the lake, his eyes, almost as wild as desperate as hers, focused on her.

His feet took him to her bed, opening his arms as she collided with him, tears rolling down her cheeks as a choked sob emerged from her throat.

He pulled her in, letting her curl up against him and hide against his chest, uncontrollable sobs wracking her. She seemed so small, so much smaller than the fierce girl he knew. It broke him, how much she’d endured, and he knew he couldn’t let her carry that pain alone.

“Shhh it’s alright Scout... I’m here,” his hand gently cradled her head as she buried her face deeper into his chest.

He felt her relax against him, her breath shuddering against his collar, and he pulled her closer, fighting the fear that gnawed at him. He would do whatever it took—he would be everything she needed, even if he had to guard every moment of her life. He couldn’t afford to fail again. He’d lost Donna once. But this time… with America… he wouldn’t make the same mistake.

The cloak moved from his shoulders, wrapping itself gently around them both, cocooning her against his chest. He let his arms settle around her, a fierce promise settling in his heart, grounding him in that quiet certainty.

Peter Parker as Jason Todd but not in the way you think. Jason Todd who's less complete after his death, trying to figure out why, feeling emotions that don't completely feel like his, only to find out he's missing a chunk of his soul from his death and however he was revived (Lazarus Pit, Superboy Prime from Earth-Prime, or a third option you want to make up) forcibly regrew it. Where'd that chunk go? Nobody's fucking telling him, so he's gonna go fucking find it. How? He doesn't know just yet. He leaves Gotham, leaving Selina or Helena or some other Bat in charge of whatever he's meant to be doing (writing this with Crime Lord business in mind, because DC should have not taken that away from him <\3), and ends up in New York City looking for a magical contact (Zatanna? Constantine? Maybe a Shazam Family member's there. Dealer's choice!). He finds himself knowing exactly where everything in the entirety of the City is, but some things are different than what his brain tells him should be. Then, he ends up at Bleecker Street. There's a building that's not meant to be there, with a circular window at the top and an old look to it. Something tells him to go in. He does, and then he's hit with the feeling of everything being wrong. He looks behind him, through the glass of the door he'd just come through, and it isn't the New York City he was just in. It's smoggier, and a feel to it like Gotham City, if not worse. And then he's hit full-force by a black goop monster that towers over him. Chaotic magic bullshit ensues, Jason meets a guy named Stephen Strange. Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange, "if you're going by everything" - whatever that means. Strange drops the mental information bomb of the Omniverse onto Jason, and tries to send Jason back home. It doesn't work. All the magic does when it interacts with Jason is fizzle out. Strange decides the next best thing to do is to keep Jason in NYC while trying to get one of his own contacts (if he's «Sorcerer Supreme» why would he need help? -Jason) to respond, and gets a different contact of his to set Jason up with an apartment in any borough of his choosing. Jason's brain screams at him to choose Queens, and so he does, ignoring Strange's attempt to dissuade him (highest crime rate? Why would Queens have the highest crime rate? That was [insert other borough here].). Jason gets an apartment owned by some rich guy (Tony Stark - a big name, bigger than Bruce, according to how many fucking things have 'Stark' on them. Including cars. Who fucking built cars?) in a shadier part of Queens that, according to Strange, people moved in and out of all of the time, and he spends a bunch of time pouring over the information of this new universe, only for himself to realise he knows... quite a good few things. He knows dates of certain things (when the Avengers formed, the Battle of New York [or something else, if you're not going with MCU/Earth-199999 {or if you're not going one-to-one with} canon], etc.), and when he's reading the crime statistics for the past decade, he realises he knows that too. He doesn't know why, and decides to memorise everything as best as he can instead of wasting time wondering. When he's done memorising everything about all of the 'heroes' Strange gave him material on, his mind is stuck on one specific person. Spider-Man.

On the Priority of Information Sources

We all know that not all information sources are created equal, right? We have primary and secondary sources, for example. And before I post Part 7 of my AO3 comments review I’d like to clarify the priority of the sources.

Let’s say we have CA:CW and Audio commentaries of directors and screenwriters of the movie. What is the primary source – the movie of course. The commentaries of its creators are secondary.

When we have these 2 types of sources to deal with, and the information they give us contradicts each other – the priority should be clear – primary source is the #1. If there is no contradiction, if secondary source gives us more information – when we can use it.

I’d like to note as well, that we should not blindly trust every word from directors and screenwriters. Of any movie, not only in CA:CW. Why? Because they are real people. They forget stuff, sometimes don’t understand something, have personal opinions and make mistakes. That’s ok. Just don’t rely on them too much. Check primary sources first.

Example: Avengers: Endgame time travel situation. The movie is our primary source. Throughout the film, the concept of time travel is explained several times. When you travel in time you don’t just go to your past and stay in the same universe – you create a new branch, alternative universe. That’s how Multiverse (hi Multiverse Saga) and Yggdrasil (hi Loki series) were introduced – Universe 199999 is not the only one, Avengers created few new branches in Endgame, they did not change past in their own universe. Steve was not Peggy’s husband all this time in the main branch.

This is what the primary sources tell us. The same tell us directors – Joe and Anthony Russo. But somehow Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the screenwriters of Avengers: Endgame, didn’t get it right. The movie they wrote. Weird. This is one of their quotes: "But it was our thought that Steve lived in his own timeline and always married Peggy and those kids you see in Winter Soldier are his kids.” Completely messed up. Here’re both branch concept and traditional concept in one sentence.

So be careful with what people say guys, even if they “wrote” the primary source.
